How the fuck am I supposed to start a rebellion and start my own Kingdom? By nearly everyone I know who plays this game's advice, they said join a faction then rebel later on. I have more fiefs than every other vassal in the kingdom combined and King Ragnar only has 3 more fiefs than I do. Yet every castle or town I conquer he gives me. I even conquered a castle, he was going to give me a different random castle and I declined it, and he STILL gave me the castle I conquered. I played the DLC back when it had just been released and I just rolled over everything with the viking bandits (northmandr vikingr or whatever). Apparently they've been nerfed since then. I imagine the same is possible if you manage to get decent numbers of any high tier infantry, since AI armies are so diluted with trash, but what was so great about northman viking was that they were so easy to mass recruit.

Ye, Danish / Swedish Elite Vikingr are probably the best single type of infantry in the game. Even Nord Huscarls in VK can't really fight them without losing numbers. They're like Sea Raiders that have drunk out of 1,000 skulls.

Well i'd say you can make use of what mountain blade engine is good at: melee fights.

I think you can make boarding action more fun and engaging by adding various ways to board enemy ship, and make the objects aboard the ship (gunpowder barrels, rope etc) exploitable to fight the enemies

also this is just me but imo you don't have to put too much details in ship to ship battle. Sailing mechanics is just too complicated to program in m&b engine for a "realistic naval combat" and i think it doesn't really matter anyway, since from what i can conclude, when people think about naval battle the first thing that pop in their minds is boarding action, swinging on ropes, swashbuckling and all that jazz

You can hold fire. Unless you are modding reinforcement waves running out of ammo shouldn't be a major factor. I frequently max out reinforcement waves just to make combat faster IRL terms and it is still tolerable.

You desperately need to play more mods and expand your approaches towards combat if you can't handle not having reliable shields. Especially when you are playing the faction with the best archers in the game.

Playing Royal Sandbox on VC. I really like the formations (even though I only ever use shield wall). That, and having infantry/spearmen/skirmishers allows for actual troop management and tactics on the field that aren't 'stand closer together' and 'advance ten paces' ad infinitum

I disagree, actually. Spearmen make for great defensive formations against cavalry and skirmishers, and are really useful for guarding your soft, soft archers (which, though not as useful in native, can still drop some hurt on your enemy if you make them hold fire until they get close). Infantry steam rolls over anything, though- but having spearmen separated allows for cursory hammer-and-anvil tactics without cavalry, which is way more damn fun than native.

Skirmishers should be separate from archers, though, because they fulfill different rolls.

I think battle sizes are just an extension of engine problems- let's be honest, managing more than 300+ NPC's and all their projectiles/attacks/etc across a 4 acre battlefield is going to be engine intensive, no matter what you do.

I've seen horsemen still come up fairly often, playing against anglos.

I agree with what you have to say about skirmishers, though- VC has a setting where heavy gear nerfs skills, but I haven't used it. Supposedly, it makes light troops more viable, but I suspect I'll just be punished for being able to afford a hauberk.

Also, I'd probably lose even more Huskarls. No fucking idea why but I lose those fuckers faster than I do Veterans or Companions. It's like jumping from Veteran to Huskarl makes them magnetic.

You don't AFK and expect them to kill everything. You kill as many defending archers as you can to weaken their initial positioning.

Defender AI can be surprisingly incompetent at getting back at ideal positioning due to spawn locations and allied troops blocking path. Furthermore defender archers tend to already be obstructed by the very fortifications that are supposedly helping them.

I just finished the siege (it went by extremely quickly) but there were two entry points, meaning that it would be impossible for a player to cover both.

If there was a secondary interior gate (Likely Gekokujo) that would be THEORETICALLY more effective. The reality though is that it usually just locks the player in a death zone after the outer gate is breached.

The problem with defender ranged are the castle walls obstructing defending archer's LOS, effectively lowering the amount of total archers that can fire at once. Put simply archers are usually actively outnumbered in sieges due to all invading archers having LOS of exposed defending archers.

There are some cases of cases that obstruct invader LOS in favor of the defenders; usually they are placed along a hill and/or do now allow LOS of defender archers until you have scaled the ladder, but they are in the minority.

1257AD actually makes this worse for defending archers due to these massive gates giving full archer protection while both parties are fighting within them. If the siege is reduced to a sloppy brawl the AI invader will almost always win due to simply coming with much higher numbers as they are programmed to only engage a siege if they have a significant numbers advantage.

The 500 troops is only really significant for players who try to invade solo. 1257AD has enough lords such that they can easily overwhelm these garrisons once they have map advantage.

Exactly. I was pretty surprised of this after reading all the praise for how Gekokujo handled sieges. I can't imagine anyone praising them from a defender's PoV. While it is easier for attackers the invasions tend to be unnecessarily drawn out as well.

The archer LOS issue between defenders and invaders is a common issue that goes back to Native. Its the entire reason why opening with high archers (AKA Rhodok Sharpshooters particularly) is so effective.

I haven't experienced the gate DoT being that significant actually. One way or another your non-knight soldier are going to die in 1-3 hits either way. The gate actively defending the invaders from defender archer fire is a far bigger boon than the gate tickling them with 1 damage.

Aside from both gates forcing the most brutish melee possible thanks to covering the invaders from archer fire it quickly leads to the primary gate defenders getting flanked. No, the game will place them based on categorization. In fact sometimes you can place archers in better positions by taking them off the archer category due to weird placement AI nuances. I typically abuse this with companions. Especially notable when archer groups are weirdly hugging the wall and refuse to hold position in the courtyard.

The gate DoT is completely irrelevant compared to a competent defensive fortification exposing invaders to defender missile fire at all times. Especially when the layout is designed with that being the only effective bottleneck for invaders.

Well, the point of that image was two-fold really. Note that my archers are placed in the front in that image. You will still get a positive K:D ratio in many sieges even without using shield units.

The other part; me tricking the AI to do a charge command outside the castle walls, is an illustration of real AI exploitation.

While more intelligent AI would be ideal I believe the real problem I think is castle layout. If the castle is aligned such that both defenders and invaders are basically parallel then the invader will typically have the advantage. If the castle is designed such that defenders are giving flanking positions due to the castle layout then they will have the advantage and will negate the shields due to superior positioning.

The AI will frequently give a charge command once the invading army passes a certain threshold with the charge command overriding the "invisible wall" of the defensive positioning they are attempting to hold.

Some castles continue to be hellish due to archer positioning after breaching the initial defensive point and you can exploit the AI by simply recognizing this and telling your troops to back off.

Sometimes you can force this behavior by basically sneaking in your character shield raised between reinforcement waves. This tends to be tricky however as you need to note where reinforcements come and make certain to either kill the defenders on the side opposite of the reinforcements or make make certain that you kill them as you take that positioning.

I am not a fan of Companions as melee units as they will spawn at <100% health if you engaged in heavy combat. Note that this isn't only between different lords but if you have normal reinforcements and the battle is divided into multiple fights.

As ranged however -- Companions are the only way you can attain power draw 10 on a unit, they can equip two quivers unlike soldiers, they can protect your archer line from flanking Cavalry with 2Hander/Polearms by OHKOing both knight and horse with a single attack. They are absolutely godly ranged units. Even if they spawn at <100% HP you can just position them intelligently and they will get plenty of utility shooting up your foes.

Trying to keep the weak nations alive in 1257AD is tough. It also seems that if a Crusade is declared against a nation that they are simply fucked.

Its pretty retarded that the pope is prioritizing Lithuania while the Crusader States are getting their assed kicked by the Il-Khanate and Mamluk Sultanate. Considering that I have had to fight off Portugese invasions in Russian territory twice it is clear that they would be a big help to the Crusaders.

I wish they were still working on the Red Wars mod. It's way too vanilla in regards to mechanic right now. The best way to be persuasive is have high RTR and beat their shit in (and lose some so they can save face) anyways.

If you are trying to establish a trade pact, alliance, or defensive pact in the recent Diplomacies mods I wouldn't bother. I had 99 RTR, over half of Calradia, a 10 persuasion companion, and even got 100 faction relations via giving away fiefs and I still could not establish any of these agreements.

In fact I find that the recent Diplomacy just makes the factions irrationally warlike due to constantly getting into shallow wars due to defense pacts. This can allow you to gain RTR stupidly fast as a mercenary due to both factions generally being eager to declare peace however.

The only element of Diplomacy that I found particularly interesting; when it comes to faction interaction specifically, is the ability to give fiefs to other factions to raise relations. It lets you completely swap the map in silly ways and more importantly instigate wars between factions.

Taking a 1200 man strong Swadian campaign against a 2000 man strong Khergit campaign as the marshal of Swadia. I had a personal retinue of 100 knights in the battle as well, and it took place where the eastern Swadian plains start to turn into steppe. The ground was hard, dry dirt kicked up into huge clouds by the sheer volume of cavalry on the field; the Khergits obviously had nearly no infantry. You could barely see 20m ahead of you through all the dust, and while I tried to keep my lines marshalled at first, the fight quickly devolved. At one point I came across a large block of archers with little melee support that were set upon by around 10 lancers. With my companions we killed the lancers and I tried to guide the archers to a good position. Ended up leading them to a small hill. From the top the field looked incredible. All you could see was this monumental dust cloud with occasional gaps, and those gaps were almost all filled with men either fighting for their lives, fleeing, or chasing. Ended up winning the battle with heavy casualties, around half of the Swadians were killed or wounded. Worth it though. the Khergits were wiped out almost to the man, and I gained a ridiculous amount of renown. Marched on and took Halmar and Narra essentially for free. Still the most aesthetic battle I've ever seen in any game.

Its a bit silly that Kherjits is so unpopular despite being the theoretic mass cavalry faction. I think that the lack of synergy of Cavalry and Mounted Archers is evident in the Kherjits actually.

You give your Lancers the charge command and the fatass horses and general chaos make it difficult to use archers competently. You circle strafe the enemy formations and you cannot competently micro the Lancers to function as... Lancers.

And of course them being "Lancers" is a disadvantage in itself since the reality of mass cavalry play is players just F1+F3 and banking on horse tankiness to overcome the clumsiness of their riders. Aside from the initial charge the Lance is a liability with this playstyle.

There really should be some elite Lord armies with specialized compositions to challenge the player. Try to mass Cavalry against PoP's Mettenheim two handers for example (especially the super mobs with the initial wave being almost 100% Mettenheim Forlorn Hope) and you will get slaughtered after the initial charge. Utilize your mounted archers well and they literally cannot fight back.

Bannerlord desperately needs lord variety and not just faction variety. Drawing more inspiration from Empire Sim games like RoTK would be a good thing for this.

Mounted Archer AI shouldn't be a problem as the player should always be microing them (follow me) if their army heavily relies on mounted archers anyways.

The problem is that it really is one or the other. The different types of Cavalry lack synergy with M&B mechanics. Furthermore the game doesn't really give you incentive to specialize in one or the other for different kinds of engagements. In contrast to my Mattenheld example with the two-hander heavy infantry. Suicide for Cavalry, but trivial for mounted archers.

Cavalry outside of mass really just excels at flanking archers (even if they don't kill them engagement will completely stop fire) and pursuing fleeing troops. Formation mods which force archers to flee when engaged allow Cavalry to basically rout them unopposed.

Mounted Archers tend to compliment skirmishers and archers better simply because they put the AI in a no win-scenario of turning their back to either ranged force. It also tends to slow enemy advance while doing so, giving you more time to pepper them with ranged fire unopposed.

Oddly enough Mounted Archery when used by the player is so powerful if used well that the player becomes a one person unit. Very easy to completely dismantle the AI's mounted force by simply head shotting pursuing cavalry with parthian shots. Once you dismount the entire enemy force it should be pretty simple to rout factions that rely on mounted troops to round out their force.

Cavalry player? Aside from not being dumb enough to accidentally get engaged in the melee blob there isn't much new there. In fact I find the risks can easily outweigh the pros, especially with aggressive play.

I should comment on mounted archer AI since I do find it interesting --

The more intelligent Mounted Archer AI definitely makes them more formidable. Still if you smash into their main force aggressively all they do is circle around and annoy you long after the battle is done.

That said I should probably see what a pure Cavalry force (like the Kherjits) are like with this AI tweak. In theory it should make Cavalry + mounted archer F1+F3 a little more viable... Although I still find mounted archers getting caught in my infantry. Or by me in my attempts at intercepting their circling by myself.

I actually converted to infantry play due to it being oddly faster IRL terms, especially when enemy cavalry is involved. While the initial F1+F3 tends to wrap things up rather quickly the later cops and robbers game that goes on afterwards can get obnoxious.


In Native this reliably worked against enemy cavalry due to mounted archers being retarded. In 1257AD not so much.

After reviewing the factions in 1257AD to verify I stand corrected. There are so many I forgot that "Principality of Wales" is not a default faction.

On a tangential note, I don't think that Lord management will be that difficult in 1257AD. I suspect I have another 1000 renown before I am comfortable as a sovereign and I am already meeting honorable/gracious lords with +70 default relations.

The scale of 1257AD's map in contrast to every other mod makes the prospect of conquest very exciting.

i tried doing a world conquest as my own faction years ago but it just got annoying, since it was better to never accept lord invitations, just leave them in castles waiting for them to talk to you, as it effectively removes them from the game since they can't do anything till you accept or deny their requests
problem was i didn't have all those lords to help, but if i did they'd just defect all the time and take fiefs from me or join enemy factions
course the good thing was since i got all the fiefs i'd get shitloads of manor armies to help

downstab is a modified floris one from AZW that holds the shield out while stabbing which is pretty neat
upstab is from FOW, which aesthetically it's the best upstab available but it has so few frames that it just doesn't work well

If you're leading a charge with your men on follow you should be able to count on them being right behind you as you lead them over the smoothest piece of terrain, into the enemy's most vulnerable part. Didn't reply since I fell asleep but thats why I mentioned lord relations in this case. What the 132 friends implies is that I have 132 Lords that I should be able to lock at 100 relations, trivializing Lord management going forward. The real problem with the 100 relations locked lords is that they frequently tend to be 100 relations locked with their starting faction as well -- Making it near impossible to recruit them until their faction is destroyed. With 132 however I am a little optimistic. All I need is one such lord per town/castle I conquer and I have no qualms about being patient.

For the other Lords -- Just give them villages and don't be overly concerned if they rebel. So long as you don't assign them a castle or town it isn't a big deal if they defect and its a waste if you don't utilize them.

Bannerlord really needs to improve their kingdom management though. They should at least emulate Koei empire sim games and at the very least allow this:

1) When doing any kingdom management such as assigning fiefs let the player see all relevant attributes of the Lords (like LOYALTY) with an visual map of that ALSO illustrates it's relevant attributes. Even basic tasks like assigning Lords to specific fiefs requires me to write it down what I plan to do before talking to the minister.

2) Allow Kings to assign multiple Marshalls with player specified regions of control and allow us to set the Marshal's overall policy. Even in Native only allowing one Marshal becomes wildly inefficient as your Kingdom gets large. It would be pretty neat if a Marshal's rebellion could potentially cause their entire region to betray you as well.
