recently bought DS3, first souls game ever with 72 hours on this character. what do I do now for stats? I love using my fume ultra greatsword and have a well balanced set of armor with the "best" rings (steel protection +2, favor +2, knights ring, havel's ring). the fume is a beast, I one shot nearly every mob in +2 and when I go to pvp its just one lucky catch and I can stunlock somebody long enough to get a second hit in which is the finishing move.

Yes, but they aren't easy to use. You need really good spacing if you want to play with them without a shield. The L1s will disappoint you at first because the first one is rather bad and doesn't combo, but R1 L1 is a true combo that does really high damage and if you hit L1 again after that it's an excellent roll catch.

The WA is okay, the knives don't do much damage but if you press R2 you do a lunge poke that combos into an R1 if you manage to land it.

Crits with it are insane, so going for roll backstabs and such things with it are encouraged.

The best way to build them is Sharp infusion on a 60 dex build, and with that you can also grab a Chaos Blade for the weapon matchups that are bad for the Quills, like long greatswords.

If you do that you're just using them as a boring copy paste thrusting sword with more crit damage and less range, you may as well go with Estoc then. The real way to play them is on dual mode like other dual weapons. It's more fun that way, and still very good.

You use it in dual mode. It just gives you the ability to hyper armor through something and have an attack that's unparryable. The only times I ever use the machete is if I see a WP or someone commits to a running attack and I can kill them with the trade.

If you're going to dump into a single damage stat like that, the best thing to do will always be to go all out in terms of weapon selection and the scaling that comes with it rather than trying to make a weapon that isn't made for your stats work for you through infusions

The point is that, for example, I can send the Crow quills from B dex scaling to S with a sharp infusion, and the extra damage I gain from the scaling outweighs the loss in base damage because of my build. It's still a dex weapon regardless.

Invaders have the advantage in these situations since the host has only a single phantom and if they actually wait they'll get buddies due to fingers.

66 STR plus the additional VIT requirements means 66STR takes as much points as quality, so can we just remove refined gem already
I mean, 90% of weapons are better refined even on STR or DEX builds, that defeats the entire purpose of quality being the "can do everything", now it's "best at everything"

if an invader were to invade in high wall with appropriate gear for their level they'd only have like 1-2 estus charges while you'd have 5 and your phantom has 1-2. there's no situation where being the invader is advantageous.

you can argue that since you're using dried finger the invaders could have backup too, but they all spawn in different areas at different times while you and your buttbuddy are right with each other and can hunt invader spawns down right as they spawn in so they can't wait for their backup to come

You seem to have never tried to dried fingers run so let me clear some things up.

You pop the fingers at the start before any mobs are dead, and you start to try to clear the level while invaders drop in.

You cannot "hunt down invader spawns" because there are entire levels of mobs between you and the spawns,

This isn't "pop fingers and sit at the bonfire and gank" this is "try to beat the game while getting constantly invaded"

Which was fine when invaders were on even footing, with their slight estus handicap but equal stats and damage they were able to ware us down, catch us with mobs or otherwise gang up with other invaders.

As it stands a single twink can grind us to a halt, which was the point I was making, it's just plain unfun now, invader get's an easy win and we have to reset.

No, we aren't fuckwads, we are adding challenge by trying to clear with invaders on our dicks. We keep trying to clear while invaders are on us, and if the invader isn't a fuckwad himself can ambush us with mobs and can royally fuck us up.
This was fun, it added tension, because as you say, the pve is a joke.
And even if the summon died we'd usually keep fighting on unless it suddenly became 3v1, then we'd consider retreating and resummoning, but it wasn't a dedicated tactic.

If he's doing what we were doing, it was just two dudes smashing the levels with whatever casual gear/upgrades since with two people it was easy, and since that's easy we were actively inviting invasions.

Not so we could have any kind of upper hand, but because we spent a lot of time as forestbros and invading in DeS and BB so we're experienced PvPers and adding that to PvE makes building new characters on console bearable.

Just for COOP helping and midlevel invasions since I'm not fond of endgame DS3 near as much as any of the others.

So looking to have relatively good armor, high stability (maybe heavy shield) with a spear type weapon and 1-2 miracles (a heal and something else utility) what kind of recommendations would you have or feedback before I start building in Mugen?

Fire turret or flame surge? I don't have the attunement for both and can't really be bothered to get through to NG+ to reassign.

Last time it took us literally 3-4 hours to get up to anor londo, fingers with the fucking faithful is just instant 3 hostiles, and they all camp the rafters with the knights.

Satisfying when you finally get one through though.

Also if you are going miracles and spears consider the Dragonslayer, the weaponart on that fucker on the rafters is a pain in the rectum. Honourable mention to the nameless kings swordspear.

We're clearing the level. If people come in, we back off from clearing when we see them and if they're not charging we bow or something.

If another person comes the only thing changing is now we're fighting two people or three people.

I'll be summoned and the invader is trying to be polite, so I'll sit down and let the invader 1v1 the host if they're not interested in me. I get thank you messages.

If I have a summon and he rushes the invader, I chill out, and if he loses then I wait for the invader to heal, emote and challenge him myself. If we all die we all die. It's a fucking game and we're here to have fun. If you're not having fun turn the console off and go get help.

If I'm dying fast because he's whooping my ass, I don't heal. I'm outclassed and 4 fucking chugs won't stop that.

If we're evenly paced and he's chugged, I'll chug.

Everyone has their own magical rules, and who cares what theirs are? You can't control them, so just ask yourself what makes you feel happy and what conditions feel like winning vs desperately trying to put a guy down so you can feel justified in mentally jizzing.

What satisfaction do people get killing new players at the highwall using the hornet ring and boss weapons?

I think it's because the twinking was born out of something different.

You twinked in DS1 because you were bored as shit, once you did an SL1 run of dark souls...where the fuck else do you go, may as well invade low and fuck with people, or help them by dropping resources.

In DS3 people felt the need to twink because every other invasion is against 1 host and 3 passworded phantoms who two shot you.

That being said, I don't think twinks would be half the trouble they are in DS3 if the estus charge system wasn't so fucktarded this time round.

I think I'm going to make a fun invader. Here's a few things it needs:

#1 Nonserious/meta/threatening weapon. I think dual caestus because I'm pretty boss with them and no one's really afraid of them.

#2 A way to deal with gank squads. You don't have to beat them and some non-combat way of dealing with them is preferred, perhaps suicide, but maybe a better way like camo somewhere in the level and just idle while you eat and shit so they get slower/fewer invasions or something to make them waste their estus so the next serious nofun invader gets a good chance to kill them.

3 has no variety, bad PvE, and most people are familiar with the series already.

DeS and DaS (before the dlc) were great because there were still things people didn't know. doing DaS invasions back in 2011 was fucking cool because you could find players that were just as confused about things as you were. then as you learned and progressed you could gain advantages over people by knowing the areas and mechanics more in depth. that and the game was certainly more punishing than it is now, where dying actually held consequences and enemies could actually be threats. things like toxin or poison troll builds could still be effective. also I feel people weren't as actively hostile back then

I feel like DaS3 has become a very "sterile" game because they only paid attention to any negative criticisms from people that weren't even their genuine playerbase
