To be fair, Bloodborne is also guilty of this, but far less overtly. While Bamco shits out rehashed areas as a selling point, Bloodborne does so in a classy way that leaves them feeling original (eg. Cainhurst/Painted World).

Also Dark Souls 1 was literally just a remake of Demon's Souls.

The majority of references to DaS1 throughout the maingame serve a tonal purpose. You find Dusk's set in Farron Keep in order to conclude in the player's mind the fact that "this is definitely Darkroot Garden" and you impress on you how things have changed while you're away. This is the correct way of handling things and Anor Londo is the centerpiece of that style, presenting a pristine outer surface only so it can sucker punch you with just how putrid and corrupted the inside has become, culminating in the desecration of Gwyndolin.

One of the most immediate references is Andre though, for which there is still some amount of argument for his inclusion, serving as the strongest sign they can give to players that, yes, "Firelink Shrine" means you are back in Lordran this time. The usage of Andre beyond selling that point is the weakness though, as they fail to build on his presence.

There are other, less compelling references, such as the wildly inappropriate placement of Kirk, who could instead have been placed in the demon ruins alongside the petrified corpse of his Fair Lady. That isn't limited to DaS1 content though, as it does much the same with what little DaS2 content was included. There's very little reason for the placement of the Shield of Want, if any at all.

However, the relevant point here being, the parts of the game where DaS1 is "shoved" in the player's face do serve a narrative function in firmly anchoring the game and it's tone of "this is the degradation of greatness". The only real fault lies in being overly liberal with the less significant references, with subpar integrations of many randomly recurrent tidbits in unusual places like Lautrec's set, Solaire's, or Artorias'.

Overall, I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be, but there's a sharp negative gut reaction to DaS1 references among the community, partially because of their having been less than stellar in Dark Souls 2.

He says that rather than allowing the Painting to rot, they've chosen to sacrifice it, burning it for the sake of the next world, unlike "those fools on the outside". Father Ariandel is, in his own right, functionally the same as the Lords of Cinder, choosing to restore the Painting with his blood in repeated act of self-flagellation. One of the big issues is that DaS2, and in fact DaS1 itself to some extent, kind of warped player expectations for how From "should" handle sequels. The series developing through DeS, DaS1, DaS2, and Bloodborne accustomed players to largely throwaway lore, settings, and plotlines, with succeeding titles always going off on their own. DaS3 is the only truly direct sequel in the series, making it as much a black sheep as DaS2 in its own way. Rather than being treated how a sequel would be treated in most series, with a certain allowance for bringing up old names and winding back through old locations, there's a fundamental aversion in many people's minds because it's simply not how things had been being done thus far.

I personally believe the School of Mensis had a very fluid relationship with the remnants of the Pthumerian race, and as a result it wouldn't be uncommon for Snatchers in the Labyrinth to possess Archibald's tech

Furthermore bolt paper can be found on random corpses in Chalices, who likely obtained this from Yahar'gul as well, and there are hunter corpses in the Nightmare Frontier who probably originally hailed from Yahar'gul but were spirited away

I was thinking that when the Church Workshop dissolved(presumably in the aftermath of Old Yharnam being burned) was when Mensis was founded, with many of it's founding members being former Church Workshop weapon crafters(possibly including some surviving Powder Keg members as well), which is why the NPC Hunters associated with Mensis/Yahar'gul often use some of the more exotic Trick Weapons(this in my opinion includes the Tonitrus and Rifle Spear Hunters to the right of the Great Cathedral as they basically guard the path to Yahar'gul)

plus the way you describe Archibald's methods would line up perfectly with Mensis' methods

also I agree about Mensis and the Pthumerians having a close relationship, as they both had a common goal in making contact with Mergo, albeit for different reasons(Mensis wants to use Mergo to ascend to Great One status, the Pthumerians want to reunite Mergo with Queen Yharnam, and possibly have Mergo become their new leader if they can manifest a body for it, which is what I believe is what The One Reborn was meant to be, although after it's failure they left it to rot until the Chime Maidens summon and animate it in a last ditch effort to stop the Good Hunter from reaching Micolash)

-Don't fight him near the flagstones. If he scores a knockdown on one of the taller flagstones, your character will go through the entire falling-from-a-great-height animation, and be stuck vulnerable on their back and have to go through the entire wake-up animation, during which you are almost certainly going to get hit again.

That's Lumpy the Watcher.

He does drop Ritual Blood 4, but it's kind of rare. The main reason you'd want to farm him is 20.3% Physical Gems you can acsess straight after Blood Starved Beast if you rush the Chalice's. Farming Bagmen on another layer is much quicker for Ritual Blood.

But if you fully explore the dungeon there should be enough, you just have to know where the hidden walls are.

A big hammer with a simple smashy moveset. Transforms into two flails which you dual weild, huge arcing swings and overhead slams.

Sweet spot damage for the spiky ball and entire moveset is Blunt except for if you hit an enemy with the chains (which DO count as serrated). Huge base damage and Requires 20 STR to weild and has mediocre STR scaling (0.5) in normal mode as well as shitty modifiers. but when tricked it's scaling doubles to compensate for significantly lowered base damage.

Can be buffed and converted.

I am using pic related to clear the dungeons. But yes, it is after the bsb dungeon. The dungeons themselves aren't hard either, it's just that the bosses are now one shotting you with every single thing they do. Watcher of the Old Lord was no sweat, but the Watchdog with his DS2 tier hitboxes and over 90.000hp is the cheapest boss I have ever come across in a FromSoft game.

Those are chalice materials you'll need to access the FRC (Fetid, Rotted, Cursed) dungeons later on. You'll have HP penalties in those dungeons, but the gems from there will be higher in quality, bar the curses.

You'll also need things like Sage's Hair, Pearl Slug, Arcane Haze, etc, and the haze is pretty easy to get, so don't worry about it. As long as you picked up the Haze Extractor in Lower Pthumeru, you'll be fine.
