Slime will make your life 100% easier in general in 3U. It isn't hyperbole to say it was overpowered. In particular, the Kelbi bow, awakened into slime, is just the "game is over, I win" weapon. Runners up are definitely Urugaan Hammer and Brachy DS.

But, by the time you're that overpowered, you won't really need the HR Jhen set for anything. It's a catch-22. I feel your pain, solo'd 3U myself, all the way.

I don't believe that damages the ship. I can't be sure, but I've certainly never lost to a sweep.

astalos is good for long fights due to high sharpness, and all around decent raw, affinity, and element.

kirin is really good for monsters super weak to thunder.

In all seriousness, I didn't mind too much. My best tali out of 300 hours was like Awakening +3 O or OO. But i've never been a super minmaxer. Plus that was the first MH I played all the way through, so I was bad at knowing what skills were worthwhile. I also solo'd with a hammer. No sub weapon. That was a weird choice.

I would really like the next reset gen to take a few steps back and re-ground the series in its roots.

Mind you, there's a thin line between slowing the game down to a crawl and better establishing the atmosphere.

But like, when I pick up the flag in the one Kirin mission in Gen, and bring it to the top of the mountain, it reminds me that the series used to be a lot more .. tactile, and less silly and cute. It felt a bit more gritty, like the monsters were actually dangerous and worthy of respect.

Then we have the cat idol ending to Gen.
I'm not saying MH didn't start off silly and cute, it had those aspects. But it wasn't so pronounced.

But yeah, one of the big things that attracted me to MH was how """realistic""" it seemed; Big weapons were slow as fuck, hits from giant monsters send you flying, you really struggle to stand up afterwards, even the vidya-standard of "drink potion to heal" becomes a laboriously accurate act. It wasn't like most games where a twink twirls a table-sized sword like a straw and leaps all over the place, you had to really plan even the most simple actions and that was so new and cool to me.
And, like all good fantasy, even though it had crazy shit like weather controlling dragons or elemental weapons, the world its set in still played by rules and felt like somewhere feasible. Biology and weapon mechanics are explained as plausibly as possible.
MH games now are still great fun but I'm not digging the amount of flash its gaining I still find CB to be an affront to MH

Switch axe was even pretty questionable, but I sort of grinned and bore it through 3U. CB is just flat-out stupid, and deep down everyone knows it. It doesn't make any sense for it to be in a game where other weapons are a rock on a stick. IG was pretty good though, stylistically, since communion with nature is intrinsic to the series' aesthetic. I don't need magical explosions shitting out of my weapon all the time, it's just unnecessary, since elemental effects are already flashy enough.

There are so many ways they could have advanced the technology of hunting weapons without fucking Transformers.

I have had a hippo chase me on a tour boat. It was incredibly obvious how shitpissingly scared the crew & driver were, even though they were trying to play it off. I'll never forget it.

The weapons are getting crazier because they're supposedly uncovering the lost civilization's dragon-hunting tech with each generation, reason why the guild SA/CB are branded "prototypes". I agree that the IG made a much better job of looking like a weapon a hunter would use, but I can suspend my disbelief enough with the new weapons.

Also, animation-wise, they make a good job of conveying the right amount of weight and momentum with all those crazy weapons at least. That's one thing I don't like about Frontier and one thing I'm worried about XX, since I could see some of those Brave Style animations going to Retard Land and look all snappy and goofy. They are already threading a thin line with all that adept bullshit, I'm only willing to accept it because they made it look sweet in the opening FMV.

IG answered my desire for a "natural communion" weapon pretty well, so I dug it. And it wasn't wholly farfetched either; insects follow pheromones, have a pressurised container of pheromone on the back end of your glaive with a trigger, shoot monsters, throw bug at them.
It would be like having blood-bullets for Bowgun that mark a monster, causing a domesticated hawk to attack that bloodied monster.

The mechanical piston pump inside the folding blade ALONG with the pheromone gun made it feel cramped but only the bone glaive visually indicates any sort of piston so its not so bad.

Switch Axe wasn't so bad, NPCs try to make it out to be far more mechanically impressive than it is but people have made SAs in real life that can actually transform. Its just two blades attached by rope and they both act as pulleys/counterweights.
The phial is probably just an aerosol of element that sprays the sword.

See, this is one of my biggest gripes about it; its conceptually bloated.
There's too much visually and mechanically (gameplay-wise and visually again) going on with it.

A shield that stores "power" by having air-pressure canisters inside it get filled by impacts from monster attacks, like a pump, would make sense and be a nice weapon by itself. Each "phial" of compressed air could have similar effects to what CB phial-based moves already do. A shield that focuses on counters/revenge damage as a solo weapon would be the ultimate "patience pays off" class.

And then a heavy SnS but with a blunt Mace and shield, where the shield simply attaches to the mace end to go from quick-evasive-blunt mode to heavy-power-cutting mode would be the first Blunt-Cut weapon in MH, as well as truly be the first to offer two distinct play styles in a simple weapon without complex mechanical fuckery.

CB just tries to do too much.

I could understand the seemingly-magical essences/juices from slain monsters being used to coat a weapon to temporarily imbue it with an effect, much like coatings and SnS oils. That makes sense, its a limited substance you have to top your weapon up with.

But blocking a monster's attack and that creating infinite crag shots inside your shield just doesnt make any sense. Nor does the in-built coating phials for your transforming sword refilling from nothing when you're not using it.

Those are the kind of "even in dragon world, thats bullshit" feelings I get with this series.
Actually, if SA's gimmick was being able to load different limited use phials in battle like Bow coatings so you could have a Fire(natural)+Para(phial) sword or something, that'd be infinitely cooler
