Who needs to be a walking tank when you're roleplaying as a Clint Eastwood style gunslinger?
>>
>>159285868
If Clint Eastwood was alive in 2281, he probably wouldn't wear a fucking poncho, that would be equivalent to him using sharp sticks and rocks instead of modern (for his time) revolvers and lever-action rifles. Dress-up based roleplay is stupid, IMO, though if you enjoy it - more power to you.

>power armor isn't impervious to bullets or laser/plasma based weapons
>can be slowed down by EMP based explosives

I'll stick to simple attire rather than strapping hunks of metal to myself. This is why plate armor became obsolete once muskets became a thing. No point turning myself into a big, slow target if a simple projectile is going to do as much damage to me as the guy wearing fuck all.

Maybe I'll throw on a protective vest or combat helmet to protect the valuables, but that's about it.

My problem with ghosts was that for zombies caught in rusty suits with visors flashing the vision out of them, the fuckers are perceptive to the point of being near impossible to sneak up on without a stealth boy, and that's in a place where you spend most of the time without armour or any good damaging weapon. There is a number of solutions for dealing efficiently with them, and they aren't that dangerous in any case, but until I figured those out, I walked away from every encounter with crippled limbs and short on stimpaks.

Or of a slave, since who cares about that in New Reno, especially considering that the Bishops winning is canon, which could add an additional layer of his feelings about the Legion…

The Enclave were literal Nazis who wanted to exterminate all mutated life in North America, and the BoS have, since the events of F2, repeatedly proven themselves to be unwilling to cooperate with anyone at all: remember that the BoS is barely a concern in the NCR's questline, while the BoS itself is wholly concerned with how the NCR is doing is whether they can be pushed back from the Mojave.

They're a bit of both.
Still, Vree specifically states that taking down their history isn't as important as her research and production of tech, so it's probably dependent upon the head Scribe as to what's focused on more.
Then you've got Paladins out doing their stuff which is mostly capture-control, so again, it's down to who's calling the shots.

Elijah was all about getting new tech to make better tech, but McNamara was all about hiding and waiting until they could go out and learn new things.
Leadership is important.
>>
>>159303515
It does appear that what happens is dependent on the leader and the general idea can be interpreted differently from leader to leader. That give some leeway in how the faction can be used.
I suppose some leaders could use the actions of past leaders to justify things if they really needed to. Kinda like a court.
>>
>>159304218
>I suppose some leaders could use the actions of past leaders to justify things if they really needed to. Kinda like a court.
Exactly, yes.
That's called 'precedent'.
It's actually what you can use to McNamara removed from his position of Elder.

>>159304272
I would prefer a set structure of their beliefs, however the pliability is useful and is just another means of developing ideals.

I don't mean the Codex I mean the military origin and ranking system adopted because of said origin. Though it could be more of a twin dictator thing like with the scribes kinda separate from the paladins though still of the same faction.
>>
>>159309251
They're all still lead by the Elder and, in some cases, a council of Elders.
Elders retire and transfer their positions to other members and, while you can't break the chain of command and they are a military, many Brothers do have a say in what's going on instead of one person calling all the shots, so I wouldn't call them a dictatorship.
Honestly, they're closer to a democracy than a dictatorship.
>>
>>159309341
Fairly worded.
Military is a form of governance so it is a military (government).
To say they have a say in what happens is to say they can give suggestions. They can make suggestions to the High Elder or Elder council, however in the end they have the final word. If someone disobeys orders they are outcasts and deserters.
>>
>>159309914
>They can make suggestions to the High Elder or Elder council, however in the end they have the final word
Yes, but the High Elder confers with the Elders or the single Elder confers with his trusted associates, it's not just a one man show.
A dictatorship requires a dictator.

>If someone disobeys orders they are outcasts and deserters.
The same could be said for most governing bodies.
And higher-ups having the final say is present in every system.
It's just how things work.
>>
>>159310041
I should have clarified that I dropped the "dictator" part.

The level of freedom is in question it seems. Though I more freedoms in a democracy than I would if I joined the military. I would have freedom to come and go as I please, were as troops are ordered off base.

Now that I look back, I see you did drop it.
My bad, but it's still nice to discuss the good Brotherhood.

>The level of freedom is in question it seems
Oh, of course you'd have very little freedom, but there's many reasons as to why it's not such a bad thing.

The wasteland is a fucking shithole.
Not being able to run out into a desert filled with things trying to kill doesn't seem to bad.
Essentially every aspect of your life is taken care of down there, you've got food, water, entertainment, firing ranges, etc.
Hell, drugs aren't banned either. Although I assume there'd be issues with Jet.
This ties into the wasteland being dangerous, but if you die out there, you're not easily replaced.
They can't just fill some fatigues with a conscript and call it a day, they have to wait for someone else to grow up.
Then there's losing your PA, Energy Weapons and whatever tech you have.

The only time I've ever done a Legion run, I did so by being a sneaky "frumentarii" and avoided front confrontation as much as I could.

However, is a full blown Legion run interesting to play? I've been thinking about doing a melee/explosives character, using no chems whatsoever (including stimpaks and radaway) and removing degeneracy whenever possible.

Still wondering if I should play vanilla or at least bring in Jsawyer and Alternative starts. I've never actually played this game full vanilla.

Instigating internet arguments is no way to spend your time.
>>
>>159316421
I've done several Legion-type characters. For the most part, it's pretty boring. There isn't much content for them outside of their main quests. Anything else you would do would literally be playing like any other type of character in the game, and it doesn't really make sense if you look at it from a Legion perspective. It's pretty well known that a lot of Legion content got cut for time, so they are not nearly as fleshed out as they should have been.

>I've never actually played this game full vanilla.
This is the only way I play this game. Not a big fan of huge game changing mods. Sawyer's mod is interesting, but can be quite annoying with the carry weight changes and tendencies to one shot you unless you're wearing heavy armor... though, I suppose that gives heavy armor a reason to be used, unlike the original game.

I'm role-playing as an NCR born and bred citizen, who obviously attacks the Legion on sight and helps the NCR whenever possible. When you play like that though, going from camp to camp and settlement to settlement, you see a lot of huge issues with the NCR. So my Courier is going to turn when he meets Caesar (who is charismatic as fuck and has a stronger postnuclear ideology), and will independently (because Legion has lmaonoquests) go and assault NCR camps and undo all the other good work they previously did for the NCR (and probably their companions along the way).

Basically your typical badass Guns / Speech charismatic soldier or cowboy build.

It's really fun aggroing settlements you've built up for some reason, I might have a God complex or something
>>
>>159317673
Yeah, in New Vegas.

I was thinking about speccing into Eye for an Eye (+10% damage per crippled limb) and run around with two crippled arms, possibly a torso for +20/30% damage.

Accuracy would be pointless to me since I'd run around throwing bombs and hacking people with a chainsaw, held by with my mouth. But if crippled arms reduce melee damage, there isn't any point of doing this.
>>
>>159317979
My first run (and the one I've enjoyed the most) was played similarly to yours. First I sided and helped the NCR up until I was liked, then disheartened by their several flaws I gave the Legion a chance since I admired their effectiveness.

But I ended up flipping sides one more time to House, since he was the best player in the field. I'll proceed and do my full Legion run now, and I can tell the hardest part will be killing House.
>>
>>159318331
You could just use a shotgun.

"A crippled right arm also reduces base melee damage done by 10% if wielding a one-handed weapon. If wielding a two-handed weapon (or unarmed), one crippled arm reduces base damage done by 5%, two crippled arms reduce base damage done by 10%."
>>
>>159318620
Well damn, I think I'll do an explosives/energy weapon run. Explosives for long range, and a flamethrower for whatever gets too close.

Eye for an eye would be neato for this build, running around with 2 broken arms and a torso as well. Accuracy is pointless and the damage penalties won't apply.

I've done a straight Yes Man run and this one, although I've got hundreds of hours I always restart before I finish. I'm not letting it happen this time; I've planned the trajectory of my whole quest from start to finish so I won't burn out. Dead Money is getting on my nerves though, the Ghost Harvesters take a full clip to put down, spot me from miles away and deal bulk damage. Once this is done, I'm doing Lonesome Road, nuking both factions (because I've never seen those new locations before) and then entering the strip to meet House and get my reputation wiped clean before the great NCR purge.

Ive never felt bad killing House, he's so fucking arrogant that I'm fine with taking him out. I think his body loses heaps of limbs no matter how you do it though; it's quite excessive. I went for a tasteful kill in my last incomplete playthrough and he fucking exploded all over the place, it was jarring.

I know about that, but I would argue that he doesn't actually join the Brotherhood, only that they gave him the quest, he succeeded and then received some aid and information on two occasions; the initial meeting and before the assault on the Military Base. That is far and away from being a member of the Brotherhood, not to mention that instead of returning to them after being exiled, he wanders off like an idiot into the wastes for no good reason whatsoever. If it weren't for Fallout 2 being released and expanding the story, it could easily be safe to assume he just wandered off to die because he had nowhere to go. It really makes zero sense that, after being forced to leave a life of post apocalyptic luxury, that he would choose to start a tribe instead of being welcomed as a hero to the brotherhood. That part of his story always bothered me, and could definitely be used as an easy excuse to start some coherent plot mechanic for the sequel that wasn't even considered a possibility during the development of Fallout (anyone, even developers, who say different are just hedging - Fallout was never a for-sure thing, especially after the fiasco involving GURPS).

There is (or rather, was), a donkey in Fallout 1. I suspect there maybe the odd surviving creature out there, but for the most part, we really should accept the established canon of horses and cats being extinct.

No idea about wild, big cats. If coyotes and wolves and survive in some unaltered state, I suspect cougars, bobcats and lynxes are probably around somewhere.

The differences between horses and cats is that the devs explicitly confirmed horses, along with similar animals like donkeys, were 100% extinct, while cats were never confirmed by the devs to be extinct.

Indeed, both Avellone and Saywer have said at one point or another they don't understand why cats were stated to be extinct.

Given that no dev has confirmed it, and multiple devs have questioned it, and that the only sources for cats being extinct are one idiot wastlander, and a man who hasn't left his tower for 200 years, both of whom live in the deserts of the American west, were cats aren't common in the first place, i am pretty certain cats are still around in large numbers in more friendly environments like the Midwest, east, and south

The only issue I have with domestic cats surviving is that they have no known food source. All smaller vermin have either died out or mutated into being bigger than the cats themselves e.g giant rats and molerats.

Dogs are fine as pack animals because collectively they can bring down a brahmin or a bighorner, and, when times are tough, dogs are technically omnivores so they can get sustenance from basic vegetation. Cats, domestic or wild, are carnivorous.

Like I said wild cats I'm sure have survived somewhere. I hope so at least otherwise the next Fallout games, unless set on the west coast, are going to have nothing but ravens and wild dogs, considering everything else needs rads and FEV in order to mutate.

As it stands

FEV
-Super Mutants
-Floaters
-Centaurs
-Intelligent Deathclaws
-Mutant Hounds
-The Master
-Harold

Genetic experiments
-Cazadors
-Mole Rats
-Deathclaws
-NightStalkers
-Wannamingos

Radiation only
-Ghouls
-Radroaches
-Mirelurks
-Brahmin
-Bighorners
-Geckos

>>
>>159327578
>But hasn't the Bible been dismissed as non canon at this point?
No, Avellone said the bible was non-canon because he felt like Bethesda shouldn't feel obligated to follow it.

BEthesda have said they used the bible when making Fallout 3.

And Fergus Urquhart, Obsidian's CEO, listed it alongside other source docs they gave to Bethesda.

Both companies consider large parts of it canon.

Also, both Fallout 3 and 4 take place in areas where it would have been impossible for FEV from West-Tek t have reached, even if it was thrown up into the air, and yet still feature mutated animals.

Wehats more is that Fallout 3, NV, and 4 all treat ghoulifcation as the result of radiation + a genetic X factor(as stated by the Fallout bibles after Avellone said FEV wasn't involved), and not radiation + FEV

I'd say that's more a fault of Bethesda getting things wrong more than being allowed to pick and choose what is and what isn't canon. I would say I agree with you, but considering the other things Bethesda have gotten wrong, I'm sticking to my guns.

>>
>>159328482
>I'd say that's more a fault of Bethesda getting things wrong
While its fun to shitpost about everything Bethesda supposedly got wrong, the FEV theory simply never made sense in the first place.

FEV makes everything it mutates that doesn't reproduce asexually, sterile.

We can clearly see that post-war mutant animals can in fact reproduce, meaning, FEV could not have been a factor in their mutation, even back during Fallout 1/2.

>>159328550
>Geckos and squirrels still exist, but that's engine limitations are work again.
That has nothing to do with engine limitations, as both could easily be shown.

Them not appear is the result of budgetary limitations if anything.

They are too small to be worth modeling/animating, like normal sized ants.
>>
>>159328550
>>Geckos and squirrels still exist, but that's engine limitations are work again.
Actually forgotten about squirrels. Geckos you can dismiss though because those things could easily rip apart a cat.
>Birds are all over the place and they're largely unchanged.
You say "all over the place" when really you mean "we've seen some ravens". Again it's probably down to engine limitations as to why we don't see anything else.

I feel like cats if they survived the initial blast, fallout and nuclear winter, would have probably become basic fodder. Dogs have uses outside of just being reared for food; cats, not so much.

Nigger, cats are predators just like dogs. They can survive just as well, and in fact are much more annoying than a feral dog.

What helps with roleplaying in New Vegas? I always think of a basic background for my character and try to pick perks and skills relevant to that but end up min/maxing or doing the same things over and over again. I usually end playing by the time I get to New Vegas because the story starts to branch and I can't make a decision which faction to choose.
>>
>>159328849
I guess you could be right. Radiation doesn't work AT ALL like our current understanding of it, to the point where you can buy over the counter "rad-away and rad resistance" drugs. You could make the case that airborne FEV, e.g. smaller, overtime doses, could help retain fertility to some degree. Super Mutants after all were dipped in the stuff, as were Centaurs.

>>
>>159327957
>both Fallout 3 and 4 take place in areas where it would have been impossible for FEV from West-Tek t have reached
Why do you all believe that Mariposa/West-Tek has to be the only possible source of FEV?

The Enclave owns the Vaults, and if anything creating a supermutant factory on the east coast to establish a supersoldier army sounds fairly logical, you'd have one on each side of the United States.
>>
>>159329145
>I guess you could be right.
According to Tim Cain, the original intention, as he designed, was that it was radiation only, as per 1950's scifi tropes.

It was Chris Taylor who inserted the idea of FEV being involved in Fallout 1 because he wanted a "logical" explanation to where the mutations came from.

Avellone was originally on Taylor's side, then switched to Cain's, and Bethesda has gone with Cain/Avellone, and Fallout: New Vegas goes with Cain/Avellone also.

I have said in like four posts or whatever "what vermin?" but okay. I know cats have a usefulness now, to some extent, as clearing out mice for farmers, but when all the things they hunt suddenly become 3 times bigger than the cat that hunts them, it renders their usage redundant.

I know a lot of domestic dogs are retarded, but dogs are going to be infinitely more useful in a post apocalyptic environment than a cat. Two of the media which inspired Fallout features dogs as the aid of the main character, namely "Mad Max" and "A boy and his dog"

Thanks, anon. I'm currently redownloading New Vegas so I can't start just yet.

I've finally figured out how to do this run, I'll run around with crippled arms/torso (eye for an eye bonus) and using a flamethrower for close/medium range + whatever explosive weapons I have for long range. Probably will spec hard into Luck for criticals as well, gotta boost flamethrowers damage somehow.

I'll also turn my character into a socially inept autist, my intention is to fail every speech challenge and deal with the consequences, whatever they might be. The only speech challenges I'm allowed to pass are science/medicine related because these are the only subjects my Courier can talk about without dropping his spaghetti.

For the crippled arm/torso thing, I'll roleplay it as if I was a weakling nerd with osteoporosis or some shit who chose weaponry that requires no aiming simply because he lacks the strength to hold them for long periods.

Its eplxcitly stated in Fallout 1, and every other Fallout game.

The only FEV mutant that has been shown to reproduce were the intelligent deathclaws in Fallout 2, which even Avellone admitted were a mistake.

Don't know what to do here, it wouldn't make sense for the Courier to just exterminate BoS, after doing majority of their quests.
NCR or Legion isn't really tempting, and as my last playthrough was Independent Vegas killing Not-at-home isn't really an option either.

Let´s discuss the Enclave and why they were the only right option for America.

>>
>>159345853

House is the best option for America. He's the only one who isn't motivated by greed; greed for money, land, power, normalcy, etc. He is the only one with vision and truly wants to see human race succeed as a whole.

>isn't motivated by greed
>is the kingpin of the gambling capital of the world
>>
>>159348559
Anon, please.

>>159348860
House has everything he needs. Being in charge of New Vegas is inconsequential and was ultimately just a stepping stone to accumulate the resources and power necessary to achieve his vision, no different than any other faction vying for power. Shit can't be done with your bare hands, especially if you're practically a vegetable only being kept alive by your brilliant advances in science, and also dealing with the entirety of humanity fighting for their own ideas.

Examine all the factions and tell me which one has a better plan for the future;

Brotherhood of Steel: Nigger, please. They only care about hoarding and, for the most part, are lead by racist old men.

NCR/Enclave: Fighting to recreate the old world system that brought down civilization to begin with. Absolutely retarded. What the fuck makes them think they could do any better? They are lead by the same type of incompetent people that started the war, and are actually just as warlike.

Legion: I don't buy the idea that once Caesar is dead the Legion would collapse, but I do believe that it would fall in to the hands of people that don't share his ultimate vision and would just take power for their own ends. In theory, his idea is actually pretty similar to House, it's just more violent, but ultimately lacks the resources, and intelligence, that House possesses.

Even The Master's plan was overall better thought out than most of the factions you have to deal with. His goal of uniting everyone under one ideology (or, in this case, one race) would actually eliminate a lot of the problems the wasteland faces, maybe even for the better. His one major flaw was somehow being convinced that super mutants were sterile, which apparently wasn't true if you listen to Marcus in Fallout 2.

In short, the only one, alive, that has a solid plan for the future other than just winging it as time goes by is House.
>>
>>159350247
>Anon, please.
>House claims he want to help humanity
>Literally spent over 100+ years after waking up form his coma doing literally nothing to better the people of Vegas
>Only did something because the NCR showed up
>Had they not, the people of Vegas would still be nothing but tribals throwing rocks at each other like before House uplifted them.
>>
>>159350247
Wasn't enough room, but seriously, anyone who thinks an independent Vegas lead by (you) is the best possible scenario is just another greedy cunt.

>>159350482
Did you even listen to House explain his plan? Did you go through his dialogue trees? He has everything mapped out. The NCR showing up just forced him to accelerate his plans, and he still needed the platinum chip to establish himself in an area overrun with violent tribals. Not only did he manage to get them to stop fighting and raiding, he civilized them and the surrounding area. All the problems you see in New Vegas were because the NCR showed up and brought that with them, and all of them throw a bitch fit when you mention the NCR.
>>
>>159350247
I wasn't debating that House isn't the best, because he is.

But to say he isn't motivated by greed, or at the very least, that is one of his reasons for doing what he does, is absurd.
>>
>>159350247
>if you listen to Marcus in Fallout 2.
how people can not realise that's a joke is beyond me
>>
>>159350832
What exactly about him gives you the idea that he is motivated by greed? I already pointed out that you can't do jack shit with out money, and that Vegas was merely a means to an end. Tips? According to Josh, he balanced it for Normal difficulty. That's his actual personality too; not manipulation by House. You can ask him to help in Ghost Town Gunfight and he'll solemnly agree to help, talking about how it's necessary to run off troublemakers. He won't be active for the gunfight, and a Science check will show you he was remotely shut down.

He genuinely wants to help; House turns him into your stalker and stops him endangering himself even though he'd do it otherwise.

The Old World System means the entirety of the Old World: the East-West dichotomy, the neocon/lib (pick your fucking poison, they mean the same thing) obsession with having an opponent or enemy, the aggressive expansionism and internationalist intentions of both communism and global capitalism, the arms race, the relentless race to find new and intricate methods of control.

Even if they're not explicitly at fault the Enclave still fights to bring back a notion and ideology with its roots deep in the blind aggression and single-mindedness of the Old World. They have nothing to offer in the New World other than pretty tchotchkes for would-be fascists to fawn over.

In a post apocalyptic environment, an animal like a cat would serve a lesser purpose, same as most pets which serve a purely companionship purpose. Not to say they aren't useful, but pest control is the least of your worries when most pests have grown to be the size of dogs and cattle.

Sure somewhere they could, in theory, be alive, but before people start rearing them as pets again, they'd have to survive, and frankly, a solitary animal which has little to no food source would be very unlikely to live.

And as I have said time and time again during this thread, wild cats, like cougars and bob cats, would do well, as they are more inclined to be pack animals.

I just finished all the DLCs for the first time.

>Honest Hearts
Honestly (no pun intended) I didn't like the DLC at all. Joshua Graham is fucking great, Desert Ranger set is my favorite armor in the game and the whole DLC might have been more fun for me if I put some points into Survival, Melee and Unarmed.

>Dead Money
I really enjoyed it, even though I can't imagine playing it on the Hardcore mode and/or without investing points in the Science and Repair skills. Atmosphere, characters and the story are great.

>Old World Blues
Not quite what I expected. I thought that it's going to be a 2deep4u science themed DLC with cliche philosophical questions about what makes us a human bean. I got campy comedy with an interesting "twist" at the end and some really repetitive missions involving searching for dumb upgrades, running the same test five times and sneaking around a ruined building.

>Lonesome Road
It was fucking terrible. I finished it a couple of minutes ago, the DLC took me 2 hours and 4 minutes. Ulysses was just a whiny baby, giving the Courier a pre-9mminthehead backstory wasn't really a good idea and the whole confrontation was shit. Also I couldn't care less about E-DE.

DM > OWB > HH > LR

I'm getting sick of the petty, pedantic arguments occurring in this general over minor elements of the lore. It's not anons trying to understand developer intent, it's anons fighting over their headcanon and reaching an impasse more often than not, which drags the discussion into stupid semantics. it's detrimental to the general, because you won't find a clear answer and you'll autistically turn a simple musing into a fucking argument that nobody cares about and have a two person back-and-forth that nobody else wants to read.

Ideological discussion generates discussion, but it seems a lot of anons think that because there's no real clear answer to which faction is best, they should bicker over everything.

This cat argument is only the newest one, however. Every time I check this general there's some new pointless squabble, and it's severely reduced my participation, because I heave to browse through retards to find actual enjoyable, community centred discussion.
>>
>>159389818
I mean, you're not exactly countering the arguments by intensifying it with this little speech.

This sort of discussion wouldn't exist if weren't interested in the world the developers have created. Is it our fault that there are inconsistencies? Of course not; we are just trying to figure out what is what. Yeah there is some headcanon involved, but without anything set in stone, there is going to have to be. Do you mean to say we are not allowed to speculate beyond what is presented to us?

>>159388796
You are very nearly spot on. E-DE's extra story in Lonesome Road isn't that bad and I'd argue it's what saves it. LR is still the worst of the bunch though by some considerable margin, even more so in retrospect giving Avellone's latest escapades.
>>
>>159388796
I've replayed all of them for the first time in ages (except LR, which is up next) over the past week, on hardcore with jsawyer and a few other mods. I entered all of them with the Explorer perk, if you care how I gauge how much exploration I did.

>HH
Nice exploration, some cool loot and characters. I like the isolated atmosphere, where you speak to about 3 people outside of the actual tribal villages. Exploration is good, and the quests aren't obnoxious. Ended up uncovering every location.

>OWB
Coming in at a high level, I cheated somewhat and bought two companions into this one (I've got Unlimited Followers, which only sent two of my four away for the DLC, so it was unintentional but really helped in my opinion). The wacky science atmosphere felt a bit off, but at the same time the map design was cool and it felt foreboding. Enemies were a serious threat, which made the back-and-forth travelling alternate between constantly engaging and aggravating. I liked the side story in here with Christine and Elijah, and the loot was great. LAER, Stealth Suit, cool perks, and a cool player home. I originally disliked it because of the wall of text you face at the start, but I can see it being enjoyable again when I next play and know I won't be talking to anyone until the end of the DLC. Found almost all the marked locations, mostly because I got sent everywhere bit I did check a few of the other non-compulsory locations.

>Dead Money
I posted last night about how I TGM'd through it. Missed the stimpak pick-up and auto-docs. In hindsight, the lack of resources and the rate at which I was getting fucked up reduced my willingness to explore, which made everything harder. Working around the security holograms was tedious, and the amount of hazards (reduced sight, the cloud, the cocktail recipe taking your health, and traps) led to too much frustration. I just raced from checkpoint to checkpoint. I suspect DM will be better on a replay, when I know how to play.
>>
>>159391789
And, the highlight of all the DLCs is the ending slides. They all give me the chills. Something about leaving these isolated locations to a rather empty future, and hearing about your effects on people. Parts of the main ending do the same for me but that's a big world, so it feels less impactful.

Luke (is it Luke? The guy that asks you to go to Navarro) says the chosen one could pose as a new recruit, or maybe a new arrival. At any rate, they probably do recruit on some level, it's just not mentioned how. I have a hard time believing that everyone at the Oil Rig and beyond is all part of one vault bred over generations. There's just too many of them to let that fly.
>>
>>159397758
My guess is they pull recruits from the vaults they visit. Children maybe, or adults that are willing to throw their vault under the rug for their own ends. Perhaps the security forces had some sort of underhanded indoctrination when serving their vault in that position. Technically, they're still government employees. There also weren't very many Vault 13 prisoners on the Oil Rig. Maybe they killed them or used them in experiments, but it's never said, so I think it's just as likely to suggest some were recruited.

It's never mentioned. If an iguana could mutate into a deathclaw, and a bear could mutate into a yao guai, mountain lions or pumas should definitely be more than capable mutated killers. If rats are mutating to a larger version, you have to believe that cats could also do the same. Strangely, a lot of the dogs are still fairly normal in size and appearance, which would suggest that the developers weren't exactly consistent with their designs when considering the environment all of these creatures grew up in.

Strangely, a lot of the dogs are still fairly normal in size and appearance, which would suggest that the developers weren't exactly consistent with their designs when considering the environment all of these creatures grew up in.
Where do I even start. The giant animals are drawn from 1950's pop culture, and are culturally considered pests (insects and rodents). The normal sized dogs are taken from 70's and 80's post-apocalyptic fiction, so there's an aesthetic decision to keep some animals (namely pets and livestock) relatively normal. In terms of lore it can be anything from humans keeping dogs as pets, and breeding out mutations, to the simple concept that the radroaches and giant rats replaced their original species because they developed beneficial mutations - maybe dogs didn't develop any beneficial mutations. You could even argue that the rough size of the animals is considered the survivable average - roaches and rats are the size of small dogs or cats, and at that size they are big enough to defend from certain enemies, and simultaneously are small enough to keep themselves fed.

We can combine all this information to determine that cats, from the same lore and aesthetic angle as dogs, would not get mutated. We could argue in favour of them developing beneficial mutations that would overtake the base species, but that is never discussed, and so we'll take a Schrodinger's Cat approach to that, and say that we can't know until we were shown in Fallout 4 what was implied in Fallout 2

Some games do this now. Battlefield does it, too. It's just a flat price for all the expansions that come out in the future, versus paying whatever they cost when they are released. The deal is better, but you're still paying for shit that may not happen, so...
>>
>>159431637
This is also assuming you even like the game you buy and play, which is up in the air for most people when talking about Fallout 4.
>>
>>159431637
i meant about it being twise as expensive with half the content of most others. steam reviews slated the fuck out of it.
>>
>>159432265
>half the content of most others
Arguable, most people giving this game poor reviews are just rimstung that it isn't 100% like previous Fallouts.

There are only two main expansions to the game that add story content. The others are mostly just fluff with items and base building mechanics. Buy Far Harbor and Nuka World for $45, or all of it for $70, or get the season pass for $49 and hope they release more story content. It's still a better deal, though.
>>
>>159432897
fuck man it's £40 in bong land, the same as the game
>>
>>159433128
There is a point somewhere in there, but I can't find it. $24.99, $19.99, those are pretty reasonable for expansion content released recently. If you want a deal, wait a year.

OBLIGATORY DLC RANKINGS POST
>GOD TIER
Dead Money, Old World Blues
>GOOD TIER
Point Lookout
>OKAY TIER
The Pitt, Honest Hearts, Gun Runner's arsenal
>BAD TIER
Broken Steel, Lonesome Road, Courier's stash
>SHIT TIER
Operation: Anchorage
>AYYLMAO TIER
Mothership Zeta

GRA is a nice little stuff pack; adds plenty but it isn't a necessity.Courier's has good intentions, but without mods that integrate the weapons into loot tables/remove them from the start, it's just going to encourage laziness. They are too OP for level 1, off the bat weapons.
>>
>>159438327
>The Pitt and Honest Hearts only in OKAY tier
>>
>>159438409
They are flawed as fuck, but they aren't awful. It would be unfair on the other DLC to rank them higher.

Personally, I really like the story/setting of The Pitt more than the DLC itself. It's far too rushed gameplay wise.
>>
>>159438327
>Lonesome Road

>>
>>159439386
Putting it in shit tier would give too much credit to Anchorage. It's by far the weakest of the NV main DLC, but it's no where near as bad as Broken Steel, Anchorage or Mothership.

At least OA had worthy loot. What did LR have beside the Riot Gears and the ED-E perks? The forced Courier background is a stupid idea, Ulysses is a Bethesda-tier character, and the world design is trash. I really don't know what happened to Avellone then.
>>
>>159375882
Vault 13 Canteen is in the trunk of a crashed Highwayman (wink wink) somewhere past Novac on the way to Searchlight.

I did the DLC's in the order that would make the most sense for the story and for it to intertwine with the main story:

>Honest Hearts when you're doing work for the 2000 caps to get into the Strip (regardless of how many caps you actually have)

>Old World Blues whenever, I did it when I was meeting all of the factions but as long as you do it before Dead Money it doesn't really matter. Level 15 is recommended, but you'd probably want to be a bit higher than that.

>Dead Money before doing the final quest for each faction that prepares for Hoover Dam (redirecting the El Dorado substation, saving/killing the President, etc.) Level 20 is a good minimum but if you do it right it doesnt really matter what level you are

>Lonesome Road before you go to Hoover Dam. Level 25 is recommended and I'd say that's a good choice.

>>
>>159442698
HH it doesn't matter when you play it. Everything else should be release order.

OWB tells you at the end that LR has to follow it, so that blows the whole "OWB then DM" theory out of the water.

I currently use NVCE because
>I don't like FCO because of how artificially dark it makes everyones face, as well as giving everyone the same face
>NVCE changes some of the faces to look more like their in game descriptions or playing card variants e.g. Vulpes now has long, blond hair
>smooths out some of the "uglier" faces
>widens the amount of NPCs with character preset faces

Only downsides is that it doesn't work with NVR (because that requires FCO), but what with the current "decisions" the NVR team are making, it's more of a god send to not have that mod.

There is also some weird bug with neck seams, where black NPCs can end up with white faces. There are lots of easy fixes online though which requires changing a few lines in your config files.

OWB has notes from DM characters in it as a "here's how we got here" detail. So if you want to know who those people are and have that backstory going in, doing OWB before DM makes sense.

Meanwhile, some say you should OWB second to last because the ending slideshow literally tells you LR is next, it's release order, and it works better to learn the backstory later. This also makes sense.

Other than that, the DLCs are enough of standalone stories that you can do them in whatever order, just so long as LR is last.

I like OWB then DM but do not feel strongly about either order

So am i the only one who noticed that the Brotherhood is the only faction which never gives you a reason to attack them at sight outside of you being told by your "masters" to blow up their base. Nearly ever place in the Wasteland gives you a reason to shoot somebody be it self defense or just not liking the way they price their ammunition. It`s probably just the Power Armor though, so lesson of the day: Power armor makes the man.

Why do people even like Brotherhood of Steel in New Vegas?

They're a bunch of retards slowing down progress without offering a better option.

Literally NINGEN CAN'T INTO /g/, ONLY WE CAN. They try to stop humanity from using any technology because they "misuse it" and continue to raid random travelers while wearing power armors and robbing them of technology.

The only reason why someone might like them is that PA looks cool, but Ranger/Riot/Desert sets look better.

For people who want to have a muh technology run there's Mr. House, a much better option.

Why?

If Chosen One didn't blow up the Enclave, Enclave would use modified FEV to wipe out life in the Wasteland, completely, at the very least in East Coast. So no, he was pretty fucking important.

Courier didn't save the world (or what's left of it), unlike VD and CO, but I actually like that. Saving the world gets old after a while.

>Chosen One
Probably impacted the development of the NCR a fair amount. Their presence in New Vegas could be considered am element of his legacy.

>Lone Wanderer
Bethesda didn't establish any need for water (besides like 5 people that are thirsty), so having water caravans boom or the Capital Wasteland becoming a central hub in the east couldn't really be done.

>Courier
The ending slides and multiple playthroughs do actually quite clearly highlight the impact the Courier has on the region, and in the DLCs.

The real issue is that Fallout 1 was the only game to get a relatively close sequel in both time frame and location. 3 shot off to the east coast - can't really see the NCR growing there without basically establishing that the US is on the verge of being rebuilt.

3 and onwards also had engine limitations - people couldn't be observed to be healthier due to Project Purity, the Enclave from memory only emerged because they wanted the Project too.

New Vegas, I felt, nailed the follow on from Fallout 2 without spending the whole game on it, while giving it's own protagonist a decently impactful ending. One of the potential dominant factions of 2 has expanded, so you can assume the Chosen One had a hand in helping them out. Enclave Remnants are scattered and have been hunted down to about 5 people.

The amount of change and detail discussed in the ending slides gives the Courier's actions enough weight too, I don't think that needs explaining.

All 3 DLCs are interesting in that you can absolutely kill the fun by not setting your resources up. I missed the stimpak pick up in Dead Money and it was almost unplayable; Old World Blues only gives you an Auto-Doc once you go and unlock the sink component. Honest Hearts has tribals that'll heal you I think, and I've never had a problem in Zion with my health or limbs, but it's still quite possible to be under-equipped in there as well. Its not a 4chan thing, the split between 3 and NV is present even for casual normalfags. If you liked 3 you didnt really like NV and vice versa. Its a good way to know if someone has shit taste or not too.
>>
>>159551270
I mean, I like 3, and things in 4 but NV has a great balance of options and consequences. And by extension the most replay value.
I've been playing NV on and off for 3+ years and am still finding new ways to complete a lot of the quests.

You just dont have that in a lot of games these days.

The reason why most people find it meh or just ok is because most of the media they come across is very black and white and when something comes along and challenges that view people aren't going to like it. They like knowing that the choice they made is the right one. Most of the decisions in this game have an uncertain outcome

That being said I like both 3 and NV
>>
>>159551270
NV feels like an actual Fallout game.

F3 felt like just another RPG
>>
>>159552284
>Its a good way to know if someone has shit taste or not too

This sounds really pretentious but i have to say it's completely true. If a see New Vegas in any list or ranking i always think "who did this knows his shit". The same happens with other games like Mask of Betrayer.
>>
>>159552284
It's not about a split between what people like what, but that NV has warranted discussion of itself for such a long time.
>>
>>159552601
Another good indicator is if someone prefers Kotor 2 to Kotor 1. However preferring 1 to 2 is a bit more understandable than fallout 3 to new vegas, if you like the classic star wars good vs evil theme.
>>
>>159552897
plus 2 had sizable chunks missing from it.
>>
>>159552375
The fact people still argue and discuss which faction is best for the Mojave and the future of the West Coast should tell you how good the replayability is.

With that said, House is best.
>>
>>159552897

Feudal marriage ethics were largely confined to the nobility. For the most part, people in the wider world got married at about when we would in the Baby Boomer era - early-mid twenties, earlier if we were adventurous or it was an urgent matter.

New Vegas did everything Fallout 3 did, better, with a more compelling narrative and themes, as well as one of the best senses of Place in any video game.

That about sums it up.

How so? You barely know anything of him in the base game nor do you know where the fuck he went, whether it is MT or the casino.
The current chain of events is logical:
>Courier is lured to Sierra Madre
>coincidentally find Elijah there
>have a convo with Elijah about his track
>Big MT is namedropped
>Courier is interested
>decides to go there
>trapped by the brainbots
>break free
>hear of Ulysses
>track down Ulysses to the Divide

I blame the voice actors. You could have easily have had some new dialogue options with Veronica and the Brotherhood after Dead Money, and you could have easily had new dialogue with the Legion after Honest Hearts.

Although with HH being as horribly one sided as it is, it's no real loss.

That mod has developed notoriety on this general and for very good reasons.

>I've always hated how rushed HH feels, so I gave it a whirl
>No Dead Horses, Sorrows or White Legs
>Salt Upon Wounds is a woman
>Joshua has a new voice actor
>Joshua doesn't wear his bandages, instead, he has an army of tribals called "Burned Men" which for some reason all where his unique bandage mask
>Legion option is non existent; the plot revolves around you "working" for the Legion at the start, then you turn on the renegade centurion leading them
>he also happens to have a really bad voice actor and bright green hair
>>
>>159569405
Wait

Bright green hair? What the FUCK?

Like, I don't mind Salts being a woman, unneeded change but whatever.
Joshua doesn't have his bandages, but is he still burned? And is the voice actor average at least?
>>
>>159562917
Except you (as in you the courier) don't actually go to Big MT willingly, you get abducted when you go to investigate the drive-in broadcast. By that logic, this is also a logical chain of events:
>Courier is fucking around in drive-in, gets teleported and lobotomized
>Work for the brainbots to escape
>While exploring, discover the notes/leftover weapons of Elijah and Ulysses
>Courier hears that Elijah went to Sierra Madre after he fucked shit up in Big MT, and Ulysses is waiting at the Divide
>Escape with badass cyborg parts
>While investigating SM, get kidnapped (again)
>Forced to do Elijah's bidding
>Break into casino, deal with him
>Escape with gold and/or a life lesson
>Track down Ulysses to the Divide and tell him to let go
>>
>>159569660
That's the biggest issue with the mod, everything is an uneeded change. The problems with HH wasn't that the story was poor (although Daniel's arguments are totally flawed), it was that it was rushed, and it felt it.

See for yourself with Joshua.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAQyGS1AssQ

>>
>>159569750
>you get abducted when you go to investigate the drive-in broadcast
Was that transportation even explained?
>>
>>159570934
Nah, plenty of playertesters went with NCR and Yes Man because they liked the idea of a new world government or taking everything for themselves.

If that was the case you'd think they'd throw the Legion a bone or two, seeing as they're the least joined faction by far.

Unlimited Companions let me bring everyone except the first two I recruited into OWB
It did actually make me dismiss everyone for LR though, and I didn't try for DM because everyone went on about muh survival horror atmosphere, which wouldn't stand if Lily and her minigun tagged along

For what it's worth, I'm enjoying Lonesome Road. Great apocalyptic atmosphere, solid tweaks to gameplay (some enemies are easier to frenzy and run away from, others are more manageable when drawn away from radiation, mines and tank enemies encourage a slower approach to exploration without actively punishing it like I felt Dead Money did, and Red Glare and no weight restrictions so you can play at max ability)

Ulysses is obtuse and le ambiguous Courier backstory is annoying as shit, I'm gonna kill him just for being such a faggot, but ED-E's story so far is really nice.

If http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/38844/? is what you are talking about, then take a look at the excerpt from Fallout 1 manual:
"The RobCo PIPBoy 2000 (hereafter called the PIPBoy), is a handy device that you wear on your wrist."
And Fallout 2 manual as well:
"The PIPBoy (as it is commonly called) is a handy device that you wear on your wrist."

Tale of Two Wastelands
Effectively it treats Fallout 3 and it's DLC as mods for New Vegas, and you can traverse between both places via a large (and well made) trade station.

It allows for many of the good features of NV to be implemented into Fallout 3's world, such as the companion wheel, recipes, ironsights, experience challenges etc

It really is the only way to play Fallout 3 imo.

It has to work with an official e.g not pirate copy of F3 and New Vegas. Also it needs to be the Ultimate edition and GOTY editions of both games, so if you have no DLC, tough luck.

>>159649194
You don't need clean water to survive in hardcore though. Its definitely harder to survive in CW than the Mojave. There are plants and recipes added to Fallout 3's world and all the outdoor barbeque's in CW now work the same way campfires work.

1.The obvious route isn't necessarily the best one.
2.Exhaust all dialogue options; you could find hidden quests or skill checks.
3.Charisma is mostly useless unless you want some specific perks, which frankly aren't that great.
4.When you get the prompt to start a DLC, and it says "we recommend level X", go at that level.
5.There is very minor level scaling, meaning you can find bullshit difficult enemies from the start of the game. Although you can also find bullshit OP weapons and armor at the start too.

Go purely vanilla for your first playthrough; maybe through in some essential bugfixing/anti crash mods, but that's it.

For a first playthrough of anything you should play without mods, just to see what everything is like as shipped.

Vanilla + for the next playthrough though.
Quite frankly it's the only way to play. Tacticool/lore breaking mods ruin my immersion
>>

It's a """mod""" made by a Lead Designer. He admitted that he tuned New Vegas to be welcoming for Fallout 3 fans. JSawyer is closer to what New Vegas would be as its own FPS/RPG.

Also makes plasma fly twice as fast and prevent killing Fiends from giving you a ton of good karma.

This is why you should support the Enclave.
>>

I know saying it's bad, but it's still a mod, whether or not it was made by one of the design team, or in this case, the lead designer himself.

Like I said, Vanilla+ for me is the ONLY way I can play RPGs, and one mod I always run with NV is JSawyer for the reasons you specified.

This or YUP?
Or both? Im confused as neither talks about how to run both mods.

the only sex mods i'd use for nv would be something like the defeat mod for skyrim, ie raiders rape your character, and maybe a prostitution mod
>>
>>159740225
Not much. I believe he refers to PoE 2. What a tease!

What about all those balance updates they did for New Vegas. Do you consider those Vanilla but not jsawyer even though its just a patch? Maybe your definition of Vanilla should be the first release version. Enjoy your bugs m8.

Not a cuck

It's like you're going to conveniently forget about the other 203 sex mods on LL.
>>
>>159742920
I think you may actually be retarded.

FOR THE FIRST PLAYTHROUGH, VANILLA ONLY.
AFTER THAT, MODS ARE FINE.
I don't know what is hard about that. I'm not "enjoying my bugs xD" because I seldom have them because of all the fixes I've had.
>bu but you said
For a first playthrough sure, but I'm on my 7th now.
>>
>>159741332
Not for Fallout there isn't.
Skyrim on the other hand...
