Of the NV factions, only House and the Legion offer feasible long-term plans for humanity.

Reminder that being a citizen in Legion territory is a comfy af life, the enslavement of tribals and those directly opposing the Legion is a necessary means to an end.

I'm beginning a game of New Vegas. It's the second time I start one, and I didn't finish the first one.
I've wanted to make my character have above-average Charisma and Perception, but later heard they are useless. Should I do it anyway for roleplay, or would I just cripple myself for no benefit like that?

>>158885424
>inb4 "y-you have arguments so you just call us betas, m-muh ad hominem!"
>>
>>158884560
True. But from his dialogue it's obvious that Caesar has no intention of actually letting Lanius be his successor. I agree that it's stupid for Caesar not to have appointed a successor even if it's pre-synthesis, but then again the only way for Caesar to die is by player intervention, and the player can do almost anything so that says nothing. I think he simply hasn't truly considered the possibility of dying before the synthesis is complete.

>>158885123
There's no reason to assume he'll die pre-synthesis without player intervention. If the Courier doesn't side with the Legion he gets his TOOMAH fixed without him, after all.

Again, it's far from perfect, but it's better than NCR/Yes Man.

>literally arguing that a faction is bad because bad things happen after the player fucks it up

>>
>>158886252
Caesar is not immortal. Even if he lives at the end of the game he will die of old age one day or may be assassinated as well.

The point is, Caesar is the only one capable of holding the Legion together and the faction will inevitably collapse once he's gone.
>>
Why does every thread have to turn into this? Just pick the faction that suits your character, not what YOU think is the best.
>>
>>158885861
Assmptions don't matter, what matters is that Lanius is even remotely considered for the position despite Caesars own opinion on him (hell, he outright says he doesn't care about the army he is leading)

But even that aside, Caesar can talk about "m-muh synthesis" all he wants, it doesn't change the fact that he is a manchild who throws temper tantrums anytime someone even mentions his failures, seriously considers the guy/girl who can constantly throw a spanner in his plans an ally, doesn't uphold his own rules in regards to advanced medicine AND genocides entire neutral communities because the previous Legate screwed up.

Does that sound like a guy with a decent future plan to you?

>>158886252
It is a serious concern since it regards the future of the Legion. And honestly, if you are so arrogant to think that you don't need to spend time for a potential replacement in case of your untimely (if unlikely) death on the fucking FRONT of a war, that doesn't sound exactly very much like forward-thinking

>>158886809

>Caesar is the only one capable of holding the Legion together and the faction will inevitably collapse once he's gone.
Why? I really don't get this ''everything will collapse when he dies'' argument you keep hearing.
99.99% of Legionaries have never met Sallow. Most have likely never even seen him; it's considered rare for him to be walking among the troops. They worship the Caesar, not Sallow. There's no real reason to assume everything will disintegrate just because a new Caesar is selected, assuming he isn't completely incompetent (read: Lanius).
Autocratic regimes don't collapse just because the leader is succeeded.

Anyway, I'm fairly certain people supporting the legion think they'll end up as one of the non-slave citizens in legion territory, not necessarily at the top of the legion food chain. the top of the legion food chain still means being a legionary, you know
citizen in legion territory > ncr citizen, tbqhwyf
>>
>>158885579
Stats don't matter. You can distribute your SPECIAL points any way you like, change your mind mid-game and still come out on top with no difficulty whatsoever. NV isn't the kind of game where you gameplay decisions made at the start of the game hold, nor was this the case for the Fallout franchise as a whole. I myself did several melee runs on jsawyer very hard with 1 STR, END and AGI characters, and had no problem clearing the game. Just stop listening to anything others say and enjoy the game.

Stop projecting anytime.
The majority of historical regimes have concentrated power in one person or a very small group of people, from the Roman Empire and Chinese dynasties to European monarchies. They did not all collapse when the emperor/king was succeeded. It's kind of sad I actually have to tell you this.

Because there is no such thing as institutions. You've just failed junior high history.
> Roman Empire
In which the Senate had always played a big role and which no emperor could just ignore.
> Chinese dynasties
Which are famous for relying on extensive bureaucratic systems which chained rulers with responsibilities as much as they enabled them to rule effectively.
> European monarchies
Which always relied on not always loyal nobility which had at many, many, many occasions had succeeded at overthrowing said monarchies.
> They did not all collapse when the emperor/king was succeeded
Because they were never as centralised as the Legion was, and when they were, it ended at the very least in years of turmoil, if not outright civil war and/or total collapse of the state.

If you can stop being an overly triggered fuckwit for a second you may realize I'm not at all making the argument that the Legion would be a good idea in the current year IRL. I only think the Legion is better than the NCR precisely because of the state of the world in FNV. It's obviously a terrible fucking idea in real life, as is really any form of fascism.
If you think democracy would've worked 1000 years ago, you're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>158880221
You don't have to really worry about full accuracy on Halloween versus a cosplay event or whatever, because as long as you get the basic shapes (bandages/vest/pants/boots) people who know the character have enough visual cues to know whay you were going for. Blue pants are fine, but you can always a buy a cheap pair of black pants from a Wal-Mart type shop no problem.
>>
>>158894656
> I'm not a /pol/tard
1. That's what every single /pol/tard has been saying outside of /pol/ for two years now, and everyone outside of /pol/ knows that /pol/tards do this, and it's also known that /pol/tards keep pretending that they can keep claiming that they aren't from /pol/ like this brilliant plan hasn't been cracked the first time it was put into action, so you've done nothing but make me even more skeptical of your claims.
2. That you reason that literal fucking fascism is better at not plunging the world into apocalypse than bourgeois democracy shows you to at the very least share the exact same thinking patterns as /pol/tards, at which point it's really irrelevant whether or not you visit the board.
3. That you resort to arguments that are cut off by Hume's guillotine shows you to be… Ah, fuck it, I've made my point already. Go masturbate to vikings or something.

Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great were both extremely accomplished conquerors whose regimes imploded after their deaths.

The Legion is especially likely to succumb to this because of its rigid power structures, all of which top out at Caesar himself, and the dehumanization of everyone within its boundaries. Everyone from the slaves to the citizens to the Centurions is pretty much explicitly a tool of the state rather than a person in their own right.

When Caesar dies, the only people who will step up to fill his place will be his highest-ranking generals, but they're all going to try to emulate Caesar's policies, and they're all going to have their own opinions of what those are (especially since Caesar's goals, a post-synthesis Empire, did not actually align with the rigid culture that he's handed down to his Legion, so any general that is loyal to the Legion is not in fact loyal to the goal Caesar was working towards).

Most likely, post-Caesar's death, his empire will fracture into several fairly similar states, each of which think they are the true inheritors of Caesar's legacy and hate all of the others with a venomous passion. That's pre-synthesis, anyway; we have no way of knowing what the post-synthesis Legion will look like because even Caesar seems to have only a vague idea of what sort of society it will be.

What I mean is, if you converted the story as told in New Vegas into a different medium, like a film or comic book, Yesman wouldn't need to exist. The Courier get can a fulfilling story arch from siding with any of the other three factions, which is really all what Yesman endings offer.

Yesman is a gameplay only copout because, even if the player is a complete retard and has never played an RPG before, they still have the option to complete the game. In an ideal world, RPGs would still punish you for being stupid e.g Fallout 1.

And you know, a story of a guy who gets shot in the head, gets revenge and hijacks a plan that allows him to become the top dog of the last surviving city of the old world seems like a more interesting story than "a guy helps a bunch of corrupt politicians/a really old guy/murdering cosplayers accomplish their goals and then fucks off". I just wrote an essay for >tumblr analyzing Fallout's bloody mess ending, transcribing it here. Since Fallout was not intended to have sequels, lore details related to Jacoren and Vault 13 from the Fallout Bible and Fallout 2 are not mentioned here.

>“The details are trivial and pointless. The reasons, as always, purely human ones.” - Ron Perlman, Fallout 2 intro

The main quest of Fallout has only two endings (though there is an “alternate” game-ending cutscene in which the player is captured by the super mutants, it isn’t relevant here). However, uniquely for a sandbox RPG, these endings are not dependent on a climactic decision at the end of the story–or even the player’s actions throughout the course of the game. Believe it or not, the ending of Fallout is decided on the character sheet before the game begins.

In the “normal” ending, the player returns to their home, Vault 13, with the water chip that will save their people from certain extinction. The vault overseer, who personally saw you off in the game’s opening scene (and is available to talk with throughout the game), comes out of the vault to meet you and accept the chip.

After he congratulates you and thanks you profusely for enduring against overwhelming odds and saving your people (going as far to speculate that you may have even saved the human race, for all they know), he sadly explains that he believes your triumphant return will inspire the smartest and fittest of the vault’s youth to leave the vault in search of glory, knowledge, or adventure.

He apologizes to you and commends you as a hero, but tells you that he can not permit you inside.

He turns away from you. He opens the vault door, enters, and closes it behind him.

The Vault Dweller walks off into the wasteland, their head hung low, as the Ink Spots song “Maybe” plays solemnly in the background. The game ends.

There is only one factor that can change this scene, a single trait on the character sheet. A trait called Bloody Mess.

Unlike later games, Bloody Mess is a trait chosen before the game begins, not a perk acquired later. Bloody Mess replaces all death animations with longer and much gorier ones with unique sound effects.

Upon completing the main quest with Bloody Mess, Overseer Jacoren comes out to meet you and retrieve the water chip, as normal.

He thanks you and explains why he has decided to exile you, as normal. He apologizes and commends you as a hero, as normal. He turns to leave and steps towards the vault door, as normal.

Then, the player produces a small gun, and shoots him in the back.

The left half of Jacoren’s body is horribly mutilated (The narrator describes his body as “shattered”). The player stares down at their leader as he uses his remaining limbs to crawl to the vault door in desperation, trailing blood and intestinal tract behind him. Though he manages to pull himself to the cold, flat metal of the vault entrance, he obviously cannot open it in his condition. Overseer Jacoren convulses violently before falling still, a second powerful gush of blood signifying his expiration, as well as the certain death of your people.

The Vault Dweller walks off into the wasteland, their head hung low, as the Ink Spots song “Maybe” plays solemnly in the background. The game ends.

The point of the Bloody Mess ending, and arguably, the entire game, is to demonstrate how the desire to see one’s enemies suffer can become an obsession that clouds judgment, twists morality, and drives people to commit violent atrocities in the name of nothing but their own runaway emotions.

Wasn't she an NCR citizen? I mean she was married to a former NCR sniper, I guess that makes her count as an enemy, although she clearly didn't deserve what happened and her thoughts on the Legion probably didn't amount to much more than "stay the fuck away from those psychos", for good reason. Her unborn child also didn't do shit to them but fuck it, enslave them anyway. Legionfags always say the Legion only targets its enemies and tribals, but clearly many of these enemies are completely innocent people that probably weren't even really actively opposing them. Though I guess that wasn't really in question.

The Bloody Mess ending renders the journey of the Vault Dweller ultimately pointless. Sure, you killed Richard Grey along the way and that’s a big fucking deal, but that wasn’t the point of your odyssey. You set out to save your people, and you came extremely close, but you failed for no other reason than your own sadism and selfishness. Your impulsive urge to punish Jacoren for robbing you of your reward was, in the moment, greater than your desire to save hundreds of men, women and children, your friends and family, your way of life, and your home from a slow, meaningless death.

Why does a player choose the bloody mess trait on their first playthrough? Sure, to make the game more visually exciting, but on a deeper level, it’s motivated by a need to see all those who oppose you die in humiliating and extremely painful ways.

The Vault Dweller is mentally unwell by the time the game ends. They have seen everyone and everything who ever stood in their way horrifically killed and reduced to nothing, not even a corpse worth burying. To feel such power and see such vivid, consistent affirmation of their violent urges caused them to make this genocidal decision. When Jacoren is murdered by your character without your control, you are, for the first time in the game, disturbed by the way your character stands unmoving and emotionless as your opponent dies a messy, panicked death at your feet, even though he shared this fate with dozens of others.

So overwhelming was the Vault Dweller’s rage at the perceived injustice of being denied their reward, that they rendered their entire journey meaningless and doomed everyone they had ever known. All for the satisfaction of seeing an opponent– a mentor and leader who has known the vault dweller their whole life, acting to preserve the very society you worked so hard to save, but an opponent nonetheless–utterly ruined and destroyed.

The Vault Dweller was so drunk on rage and hatred that they wanted nothing more than to stand over Jacoren as he spent his final moments in unimaginable agony, desperately crawling through his own gore, both to escape the maniacal traitor who had doomed his people, but also in a futile attempt to deliver the water chip and save his people. Your people.

This isn’t to say Jacoren was right. Only that whatever justice can be found in his death does not outweigh the lives of hundreds of people and the survival of your culture. But because of the trauma you put the Vault Dweller through, for a few pivotal seconds, they were in such an extreme mental state of bloodlust and self-idolization that they couldn’t see this.

This ties into Fallout’s central themes of nuclear holocaust and eternal war. In Fallout, the world ends because people got used to living in hedonistic excess and fought each-other for the right to do so, quarreling for many decades, culminating with every nuclear-armed country deciding that they have been so wronged by other nations that a complete genocide is somehow justifiable.

Online discussion of the Bloody Mess ending often amounts to people simply saying Jacoren deserved to die, or treating it as a funny easter egg (because this is Fallout, and gore is funny, right?). People who respond this way do not understand the game they played. The Bloody Mess ending is the most important scene in Fallout, and the whole game is nothing short of an explicit, somber condemnation of self-righteous violence.

But people didn’t remember the message, they remembered the gore, and they wanted more.

Now the series is driven by shallow “black comedy” and justified acts of mass murder. Why does “war never change”? No longer because of conflicting emotions and ideologies, but because of pointless orcish hordes and convenient “bad guys” (contrast with the organized and ideology-driven super mutant army of the Master in Fallout 1). These are not human reasons, they are inhuman ones.

Every modern Fallout game has ended with a lengthy scene of slaughter, in which the player is intended to participate, and find satisfaction, glory, and delight. The Bloody Mess perk is now picked by almost every player, for the damage boost it now grants and the cinematic spectacles of gore that come with it.

When you choose to begin Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game with Bloody Mess as one of the two traits you are allowed, you are telling the game, “I really want to see people suffer.” And at the end of your adventure, the game solemnly replies, “Okay.”

The fact that simply being a 100% civilian citizen of the NCR is enough to qualify you for slavery puts to lie the entire claim that the Legion won't completely fuck up the NCR territory/civilians it's supposed to absorb/be absorbed and changed by, though.

Not to mention, it's a display of just how 'flexible' the Legion's standards for who can and can't be enslaved actually are, casting doubt on every claim of 'oh, we wouldn't enslave/kill/raid that random farmer, just tribals'. It suggests that the Legion would find some loophole, a very creative one, if need be, to justify enslaving/murdering anyone and everyone they want to. It destroys any pretense of Legion 'justice' or their supposed role of bringing law and order to the wasteland, because, ultimately, they're just a very well organized band of raiders. Nothing more.

I'm writing about Fallout 1, which is a different game, with a different narrative structure and different themes. Your initial motivation, to save your vault, is still your motivation up to the game's final cutscene, unlike killing Benny, which is resolved quickly, with the game immediately giving you new motives.

Aside from that, killing the Master still directly serves the purpose of saving your vault. I don't think the fact that you were of benefit to the surface humans renders the vault plot irrelevant, especially because it bookends the entire story.

Yeah, I commented on how the later games treated the bloody mess perk, vs. its relevance in the original game. What, specifically, are you upset about?

Like I said in the original post, Fallout was not intended to be a big lore-driven franchise, it was a relatively small narrative mostly centered on a vault in a wasteland. Most of the game's content, including the killing of the Master, are directly motivated by your goal of saving the vault. NV is all about worldbuilding and sandbox gameplay, and demonstrates its themes in different ways. It has a very different plot structure that reflects this.

I don't feel like anything you said undermines my post at all. If the bloody mess ending isn't intended to have some kind of meaning, why is it the only alternate ending to the main quest, and why was so much effort put into the animation of Jacoren dying? Nothing you're talking about has anything to do with the vault plot that the entire game is centered around, which is what I'm analyzing.

I don't think they'd even need a loophole, Caesar isn't held accountable to anyone. He's ruthless and pragmatic. If he thinks he stands to gain more from enslaving some random town than from letting them live in peace provided they follow the laws, he'll do it.
I don't think anyone will give a shit that it violates the Legion's general slavery policy, from the way the Legionnaires address others in New Vegas, they've probably dehumanised everyone outside the Legion to the point of not really caring what happens to them anyway.

>Supposedly you can trigger the bloody ending by having negative karma, being a childkiller, or just hitting the start combat button quickly enough as well.

Sorry I didn't address this. Childkiller and Berserker perks still demonstrate extreme trauma and self-righteousness, so even if I got the details wrong, all the analysis is in-tact. If you play the game as a serial killer or a child murderer, you're still telling the game that you are a desensitized maniac. I also think they might only trigger properly in patched versions of the game but I'm not sure.

Split-second VATS kill is either a bug or deliberately extremely hard to the point of being an easter egg. A secret one-frame window in which you can switch to the bad ending and undermine your quest still doesn't significantly affect how I view the game's plot structure.
>>
Fuck me, yeah, apparently having really low karma can actually trigger the ending.

I still think this is a discussion that Fallout fans should talk about more, and I do think it's a deliberate statement about how your character's trauma and the player's violent power-fantasy gaming affect the narrative, but clearly my information on the amount of triggers for the ending were wrong, so yeah, my name is mud and I'm a fool and a lout

I still wish people talked about the ending and I think my central point still stands even if I was wrong about Bloody Mess being the only trigger

I'm not saying your interpretation is invalid but I kinda doubt it's what was going through the heads of the developers when they decided to add that ending. Also, how does it doom the Vault exactly? The water chip still gets delivered, at least in a "normal" playthrough. You could theoretically complete all objectives before delivering the chip, but I don't think you even know what your final objectives are before you do. Or not get the chip at all and still somehow win, which is just an oversight I guess.
Jacoren's survival doesn't stop some of the vault dwellers from following you into the wasteland either, as I think it's canon he survived, and was then executed. Of course, that's not a part of the original game's story.

Man I just like Fallout and wanted to get people thinking about the ending more, because it really seems like people never talk about what it implies about the message of the game. Fallout 1 has strong writing and it has 1 alternate main quest ending and I've never seen discussion about it outside of "Jacoren deserved it" or gore celebration.

My essay is bad, I'm admitting this in so many words, I hope you find peace in this. I think the trauma/powergaming/violence connection is really worth discussing, but I based my interpretation on incorrect info about the ending triggers and, as >>158925352 said, my groundless assumption that the chip is not salvageable, which would simply make this an issue of the value of Jacoren's life and the vault's leadership, rather than the Vault Dweller's sacrifices and the vault's population.

I posted what I wrote here to see if it had glaring issues and it totally did. My understanding of Fallout is stronger for having done so, and if I've made people consider the ending from angles they hadn't previously, then I don't think my post was completely without merit.

You do know that there are several stealthy ways to kill people without anyone noticing in the game, with several becoming available very early, right? Like, if you can't one hit kill her with a melee weapon with a sneak critical from VATS after taking a doze of psycho and buffout, then you can shoot her first to get her health down, which, if you do it right, won't make her hostile. That, and she's actually at a great position to take the whole camp out. You can set mines on the path leading to the roof and then just pick off everyone who comes running at you one by one.

Dude some of what I said was inaccurate, that doesn't mean every single one of my points was completely worthless. Bloody Mess is still by far the simplest and most common way of achieving the ending, which consists of an impulsive act of violence against the overseer. Most of my important analysis rests on these simple facts. And I'm happy to discard the analysis that was based on incorrect/unprovable assumptions, because I don't need those points to support my main argument, which is that the game's ending is a statement about violence, trauma, and desensitization, which I fully believe to be the conscious intention of the writers.

You seem to like moving the goalposts and nitpicking the fuck out of everything. So here's my interpretation boiled down for you, without any grand presentation:
>The game punishes you for picking bloody mess by making you murder your overseer in the ending. This can be seen as a condemnation of those who would choose such a function when starting the game. It can also be seen as the result of trauma the main character endures, which is actually supported by the fact that Berserker (killed 25+ humans, over 2/3 of them good characters) and Childkiller (as well as extremely low karma, still unsure of that) also trigger the ending. Any possible way to trigger the ending outside of the 1-frame VATS window (which is probably unintentional) consists of playing your character in a way that exposes them to traumatic death through choices typically made by people desensitized to violence, and Bloody Mess is by far the easiest way to get the ending.
>The later games are at odds with this message.

That's all I really wanted to say. I tried to present it in a big interesting way and my point suffered for it. I know that. I just wanted it to be interesting to read.

I'm deadass just here because I want to talk about the Fallout 1 ending. I appreciate you correcting you where I was objectively wrong but can you like. Calm down lol

>Bloody Mess replaces all death animations with longer and much gorier ones with unique sound effects.
I'm pretty sure it just makes the game always choose the goriest animation of several ones. You can still see those animations and sounds in a normal game, they just don't play on literally every death.

>>158922420
>You set out to save your people
And how does killing the Overseer stops it in any way? It's not like he's the only source of knowledge in the vault. He's old, he would die relatively soon anyway. Besides, people can just leave the vault, it's not exactly "safe" out there, but it's a living.

And so did every older one, really.
>grants and the cinematic spectacles of gore that come with it
It's ugly as fuck, actually. I mean, the first time you shoot a molerat and every limb of it explodes as it's kind of funny, but it gets tiresome very fast.

I actually appreciate the thought, but I think you are misguided.
>>
Why the fuck do all the gun merchants have so little ammo for sale?

You'd think the gun runners would have more than 20 .44 bullets for sale at any given moment.

>>
>>158933651
I did. It still pisses me off though.
>>
>>158933651
You still need a lot of ammo for it.
>>
>>158934695
I dunno, for me traders like Vendortron and the nuisance guy sell pistol bullets in hundreds. You can buy 100-200 hundreds of lol9mm, 10mm, .45 from them easily. I never noticed the .44 amounts because I don't use .44, but I imagine it not being that much less. And even then, you can buy 500-800 rounds of pistol ammo, also buy all the 12ga and 20ga ammo because it yields you pistol powder, break it all down and then you can assemble as much .44 SWC as you have shells. And you don't even need so much .44 unless you're using FIDO.
>>
>>158934941
Usually lead and powder are not the issue, primer is. For .44 it's not a problem, but for large rifles .308 and .45-70 i'm having constant lack of primers.
>>
>>158935262
Look for primer boxes, then. And I dunno, I feel like .308 is similarly common. Definitely bought it in hundreds to grind it into rifle powder for my 5mm addiction.

If you haven't dealt with Contreras yet, the guy in McCarran, he sells those almost in thousands. On the trade outpost, the arms dealer women above, the one next to a truck, occasionally sells those too.
>>
>>158933591
I once had that Khans grill on the Armory sell me hundreds of ammo.

Do merchants pile up ammo when you leave them be for a long time? Or just reset?
>>
>>158935417
Yeah, I dealt with him a while ago. I just wanted to say that handloading is not a panacea and you still have to visit vendors.
>>
>>158938992
Works on my machine ;^)

The only problem I have is stuff like AP rounds, 5.56 specifically. You really need that AP to make Bozar effective vs. anything that isn't a cazador, but getting enough to feed that gun is not easy.
>>
>>158939103
>to make Bozar effective vs. anything that isn't a cazador

>>
>>158886252
That's actually a great argument for the NCR, desu

>Kill House
>faction falls apart since he's literally one guy controlling it all

>Kill Caesar
>At best, the Legion disintegrates in a few years, at worst, Lanius murders everyone eastword

>Kill every important NCR official in Nevada
>The Republic is disrupted for a few months at worst, as the politics get sorted out, people get promoted/demoted, and the VP is sworn in.
>And chances are pretty good that Kimball becomes a JFK figure and a martyr, which makes him more useful dead than he ever was alive.
>>
>>158942217
Oh, and Caesar dies regardless of the player's help, since the Legion's culture is unlikely to raise any brain surgeons anytime soon.
>>
>>158939940
To be fair, Tommy-gun has huge spread, even when modded. Bozar is kind of okay with AP ammo, kills a charging Deathclaw in one mag, it's just that you need to hoard that AP ammo and there are more effective weapons.

I find it more funny that it does less damage per bullet than a regular LMG and is less accurate than Avenger.

But yeah, it's a shadow of what it was in FO2.

One of these days...one of these days, I'll actually finish my first legion-centric run.

I just always get near Nipton, then I remember how ham-handed their introduction is, and how you have to go all the way to Vegas before you can go the Fort, but you have no real good reason to stop along the way and interact with the Legion content on the western side of the Colorado besides being a huge fan of seemingly random torture and murder and mutilation, and I don't tend to play randomly evil characters, because that's stupid...and the vast majority of my characters are female on top of it all...

I actually quite like their introduction and how you meet them. For me, Caesar himself was the tipping point for finding the Legion to be anything but irredeemable, and I feel like that was deliberate (hence the faction reputations being wiped after you leave the Lucky 38)

You can spend tens of hours doing NCR quests, seeing all their flaws and how they're upsetting many of the established communities, but there basically "the good guys" trying their best in a postnuclear world. The Legion seems like a bunch of barbarians that just want to destroy, and appear as a generic threat, until Caesar puts an ideology behind it that gives it as much merit as the faction you've presumably supported so far

It's just a shame that it all boils down to telling and not showing with the Legion, which worked so well for the NCR in my opinion, because you could experience their shortcomings and their strengths.

Typical Russians, never learning to not try to make a universe simulator out of everything. They'll run out of juice in two years, tops, when the mod is finished by a fifth, and the project will then drag on for five more years until it's quietly abandoned. I bet they intend to completely finish Arroyo before they even begin working on Klamath. Fucking amateurs.

Anyway, it's a completely pointless mod, but they're doing it for fun so whatever.

They'd be an amazing villain. From a small, tightly knit community in 1, to a generally decent city in 2, to a crumbling democracy in NV, they'd be a perfect invading force in some will-never-happen future game. Or maybe the game would be set in a crumbling NCR, and you could support rebels or the old NCR, I dunno. Something like that. Beats Enclave for sure.

Well, you've got the mojave, but more specifically vegas as your tokyo. When the game starts, Parts of it are still in the control of the original people, but bits are being taken over, with the original people in the middle. The NCR follows their generals and on up because they were appointed or elected, wheras the legion follows their superiors because they earned their position through their power. On the NCR side, all your orders come down through the chain of command, never from YHVH the big man himself. On the legion side, you are working directly with lucifer Caesar to further his ambitions, even going so far as to be directly ordered to kill the head figure.
House and Yes Man are the figures from tokyo itself. House wants to secure vegas from outside influences to preserve it. Yes Man is you choosing to tell both the big powers to fuck off, and claiming vegas's future for yourself.
I'm not really good at explaining this, am I.
>>
>>159075335
It's a bit of a tricky situation with Veronica. Depending on how you passed her and the Brotherhood's quests, if you did at all, her behaviour changes… But I'm not too sure of that. You definitely can keep Veronica if you blow up the bunker *and* have a positive reputation with the Brotherhood to the point where at maximum infamy you'd still have a "Soft-Hearted Devil" reaction (i.e. you should do their quests and/or prevent the launching of nukes in LR), so that's the safest bet in case you do decide to go against the Brotherhood.
As for whether you should… Yes. Yes, you should. No doubt about it. Wipe them out and don't look back. Look up their ending on the wiki after you finish the playthrough to understand why that is.

>>159083973
It's explicitly spelt out that bombing the Legion won't do much for the Mojave in the short term: Caesar will still have enough resources to attack the dam, especially since after the bombing he wouldn't be able to turn back anyway, and once you deal with Caesar, the Legion's done one way or another, so all you'd be doing is bombing people of the Midwest for just happening to be assimilated into the Legion. If you think that they're all better off dead (and it makes sense — the Legion will fall apart, but it's not like life will really get better for the tribals for decades if not centuries afterwards), then go ahead, just know that it won't influence the Mojave in any big way.
>>
>>159084584
By "good" I don't mean being a goody two-shoes, I mean making Vegas a good place to live in and helping humanity in returning to pre-great war glory.

>>159084767
I think I'll nuke them then and leave NCR alone. Legionaries would become bandits anyway and form into smaller tribes, it's not like they behave like animals only because they're in the Legion.

Ideally how would you guys want to see power armor in the future?
I feel like 3/NV had it too snug, and in 4 it reminds me too much of a mech suit and looks kinda oddly proportioned.

For me pic related to be the best representation of how I'd like to see it, tailored the body but at the same time fairly bulky in keeping with that retro futuristic look.
>>
>>159108842
Frankly, I'd rather not see any more power armour. It was cool the first time, it was okay the second, but now it's only there to fill the quota. I like how Vegas treated armour: defining the best as not the heaviest, but having the highest weight-to-DT ratio, where ranger black armour at the very least matches Brotherhood power armour in practical utility while looking much cooler. F4 took a step in the right direction, making PA explicitly branch off from normal armours instead of simply being considered the best.
>>
>>159109684
From a gameplay perspective I can agree about it needing to be balanced, Power Armor shouldn't just be obviously better than other top tier armors.
It should be able to protect you from the most damage out of any other armor but have certain drawbacks to make it fit more in line with a certain play style.

I'm not sure why, but I just can't step on a final path, I'm just hunting geckos and raiders while listening mojave music radio at this point.
Have you felt like that? It's my first run if it does matter.

I'm currently doing a maximum quests run, on the process of completing all the NCR quests and exploring the entirety of the map, about to do Dead Money after I find myself three more triggers and do Boone's quest

I'm gonna turn Legion when I meet Caesar, because I'm edgy, but I'm really enjoying doing all these "look how fucked the NCR is" quests. I've never even done some of them before. There's a lot of them.

I would ask in the FO4 General, but I trust you guys more.

I've never played FO4, should I even bother? I've played and beaten NV 10 times over and am itching for another Fallout game.

Depends on what you're expecting.

If you're expecting a RPG, then don't bother. You're going to be utterly disappointed, or disgusted.

If you want a post-apoc open world shooter with minimalistic RPG elements, then why not. It may be fun for a while, especially with mods.

Man Bethesda sucks dick. Have they ever made a good game? Ever? On top of that, what happened that lets them get away with this every year?
>Fallout 3 drops

>>159120016
Well, there is ain't much of an interesting stuff in Fallout 4.This game is a jack of all trades, but master of none.
It tries to be a shooter - but it is repetitive, boring and the weapons are awful. You might want to play some Borderlands instead.
It tries to be a sandbox - you can build your own house, make your own settlement and shit. But it doesn't really feel rewarding and the system itself is pretty bare bones. You might want to play Rust or any other sandbox game.

I've wasted 60 hours on this game trying to find anything good about it. I didn't even pay for this piece of shit but I feel scammed anyway.

Probably. But in general, critics suck all AAA devs' dick. See Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.

I like Bethesda's Fallout for open-world shooters (even though they're quite generic), but they're forcing this to a series that is foremost a RPG series and this shit is unacceptable.
>>
>>159108641
>just trying to understand how it came to be
Probably because most people bought Fallout 3 after it had already been out for a while or even after all the DLC was out, so they didn't experience how buggy it was, whereas NV had 3's reputations, so more people bought it at launch.

At least from what I've seen and read.

The average joe has no standards and started gaming kinda recently. Since they've never experienced complex games from back then, games like Skyrim and FO3 actually feel pretty deep and complex.

And most of these average joes refuse to play the good gems from the past, mostly due to graphics and gameplay.

For instance, I have one friend who was really into Oblivion and Fallout 3, said he loved playing first person RPGs and wanted some ideas from me on what to play next. I recommend him Deus Ex, and the next day he berates me for recommending such a shit game.

>"But why? Why did you think that Deus Ex is shit?"
>"The graphics were terrible, my bullets never hit my targets and I had no idea what to do."

>He wanted to use pistols but didn't tagged the pistol skill
>He got angry because the initial area was "too wide" and there were no pointers on where to go
>He also got mad because of the ancient keybinds (which can be easily remapped in 10seconds if you bother to open the options menu)

This is your average joe today. Keep in mind he also disliked New Vegas, for bullshit reasons as well.
>>
>>159120958
The only thing that kept me going on Fallout 4 was going around with my power armor, because they nailed them.

However, I ended up dropping it because I just wanted to fuck around raiding cities with my power armor and energy weaponry, but literally everyone is an essential NPC and there were like 2 settlements (lmao because you can build them yorself)
>>
>>159127587
>Keep in mind he also disliked New Vegas, for bullshit reasons as well
But they are quite similar with fo3.
>>
>>159128214
You're in for a wild ride, he disliked New Vegas because:

>There was too much talking
>He couldn't deviate from the main course and explore the deathclaw/cazador riddled areas
>He had little ammo to begin with
>Everything was expensive and the stuff he sold was worthless
>No "cool places" like Megaton, even though he only played up to Novac
>No fun places to explore, and again, he only reached Novac and stopped playing
>It was orange
>>
>>159127587
I love reading shit like this becuase it speaks of how little people understand why 90% of the changes in RPGs in the last decade have happened, and the ramp conspiracy theory bullshit people make up when they don't understand something.
>>
>>159128883
>No fun places to explore, and again, he only reached Novac and stopped playing
Not him but, to be perfectly fair, thats something even many people who liked NV have admitted too.

Getting to Novac, depending on how well you explore, can take like 10 hours, and covers 90% of the bottom half of the map.

And there really isn't anything interesting in the entire bottom half of the map

the first time anything visually unique appears is when you reach Vegas, and even then, only applies to Vegas, nellis, and maybe jacobstown
>>
>>159113775
If he would have reduced her mouth and boobs, she could be decent.
>>
>>159128883
>>No fun places to explore
As much as I love NV, this is pretty on point. The map and the locations were overall pretty lame IMO.

Fallout 3 was set in Washington DC and had several iconic locations all across the map. There was indeed a fuckload of annoying subway tunnels, but I found it interesting to explore the ruins of the Capitol, the Museum, the Washington Monument, etc.

New Vegas is a barren desert. This is part of the series' thematic, but it only worked fine when Fallout was a isometric game. For a 3D open-world game, it doesn't really work out well. There are a couple of interesting sites like Vegas, Nellis, Jacosbtown, but that's about it really.

To be honest the whole trek from Goodsprings to Novac, Boulder City and Freeside was the most annoying part of the game to me. It's just walking, walking, walking, following empty roads and doing nothing.
>>
>>159130251
>Novac, Boulder City and Freeside
It's probably my favorite part of the game. It just feels so atmospheric, trekking along the road with some random traders passing buy, buying some water at Grub and Gulp, seeing the walls of Vegas up close for the first time.
>>
>>159129646
The bottom half of the map could use more interesting places to explore, true, but claiming that the entire game lacks fun places to explore when you haven't even left the bottom half of it is retarded.

>>159130251
Funny, exploration in FO3 was bad for me as well. While in NV it was random shacks, in FO3 it was random buildings filled with raiders or mutants.

The only fun place to explore in FO3 was the capitol, and getting to there was even more annoying than the trek from Goodsprings to Vegas (lmao metro tunnels)
>>
>>159130251
The trek from Goodsprings to Freeside was atmospheric and cozy as fuck, and I enjoyed the places I found in my path, namely Vault 11, Matthew's farm, Crashed Vertibird, REPCONN facility, etc.

And 188 Trading Post is literally the coziest place in the entire game.
>>
>>159130568
>but claiming that the entire game lacks fun places to explore when you haven't even left the bottom half of it is retarded.
That I agree with, but you still have to admit, the bottom half of the map was garbage
>>
>>159131013
Not garbage because there were some fun places to explore and some challenging content as well, namely that Deathclaw cavern and the Crashed vertibird.

But yeah, upper half was much more fun than bottom half.
>>
>>159131089
>and the Crashed vertibird.
That wasn't that hard

> namely that Deathclaw cavern
That wasn't very interesting to explore, it was just a typical monster tunnel.
>>
>>159130568
>in FO3 it was random buildings filled with raiders or mutants
Is that really like this? I wanted to give a try after vegas.
>>
>>159132718
Being fair, the game did have some fun places to explore, with the Capitol itself being the coolest.

It only sucks if you value lore and proper writing, but if all you want is new locations to shoot things and acquire loot, FO3 is pretty good at it.
>>
>>159130371

i don't really know whats a "cool" location in new vegas. i guess the boomer field, fortification hill, and jacobstown are all pretty neat, but again, theyre in the north. camp searchlight is cool but that's not on the main questline.
>>
>>159132718
a lot of them are

theres a small, relatively unmarked quest involving slootwear that you have to complete by reading notes until you find the item in question. I wish more of the quests were like that.
>>
>>159135871
Repconn testing area is cool because ghouls-in-rockets, though it's too corny for me.

Repconn HQ is cool because it's a place with history and cool stuff and has a great reward in the end.

I guess V34 is cool because it's a tough little gauntlet.

But overall NV is less about "wow, cool place" and more about quests, people, factions etc.

So it's confirmed that Avellone works for Bethesda now then yeah?

Fallout 2 was a step in the right direction imo. Fallout 1 is great, but has far too generic as a post apocaltypic game. Everyone tries to emulate either Mad Max or A Boy and his dog.

What Fallout 2 did was show a timeframe seldom used in post apocalyptic media, namely what happens AFTER the post apocalyptic struggle. This for me, more than the 1950s/early 60s feel, stood out as what makes Fallout unique from every other game of its type.

For Avellone to dismiss it is retarded, and you clearly see he is just sucking up his new employers Bethesda by praising their "interpretation".

Long story short, his religiosity makes him sound incredibly passive-aggressive, to the point where every single line he says sounds like a stealth insult — when it's not an open insult —, even when you have been nothing but graceful with him. We all know F:NV 2 will probably never happen. But if it does then Obsidian can go balls to the wall since they should try to avoid telling what happened to the Mojave at all cost to not piss off Legion/NCR/House/Yes-Man fans. A lot of the things he says are informed by his religion, so if you really find talking about religion uncomfortable, that's one thing. But he's also designed to be a very proud and wrathful person, albeit one who's trying to be better about it. So even if you take away the religious lines, he comes off as kind of didactic and rude (if you find preachy people to be rude in general), and especially so if you aren't immediately willing to throw yourself into their problems.

Personally I found his non-aggressive religiousness refreshing (t. murican), but I can see where his other traits might be annoying.

Want to mod Bozar to actually be the best automatic rifle in the game without making it stupidly overpowered. Thinking of giving it base damage of 36 while decreasing its rate of fire down to 8 shots per second, keeping its DPS at the same value it has in vanilla (285), and can't decide if increasing its rate of fire to 9 per second, making it the same as 12.7mm SMG in this regard, or even 10, bringing it close to Avenger, is stupidly overpowered. Also want to adjust its spread to 0.45 (from 0.75 in vanilla), seeing as Avenger has 0.55 despite being a minigun. Any advice?

NCR, my name is Ken Smith.

I'm a 25 year old Shi ?? ??? (Cowboy fan for you Communists), and I spend my days drinking Sunset Sarsaparilla and Nuka-Cola and listening to superior American Music (Big Iron, Lonestar, Johnny Guitar, In The Shadow of The Valley)

I train with my .357 Revolver every day, this superior weapon can shoot straight through steel because it kicks ass, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gun license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak English fluently, both the NCR and the New Vegas accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about NCR history and their Constitution, which I follow 100%

When I get my NCR citizenship, I am moving to New Vegas to attend a prestigious King's School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a lynch-pin for a faction vying for the Mojave Wasteland.

I own several cowboy outfits, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to New Vegas, so I can fit in easier. I tip my cowboy hat to the Veteran Rangers and Troopers and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in the Mojave Wasteland

A ranger would know how Latin sounds, if only specifically to know if he's dealing with the Legion. Remember that there are dozens of tribal languages that developed in two centuries after the apocalypse, and rangers are all well-travelled to have heard at least a couple of them spoken.

No fucking wonder the Sorrows don't want to retrieve them. They probably tried several times until too many people died in the caves and they decided it's just not worth it.
And what's the lore reason for available supplies put in non-taboo places not having been taken long before the Courier was even born, again?

Small frame raises it to 7 and implant to 8.

Luck 7 with the implant is more than enough unless you're going for a crit build.

As I was saying, that's too low. You can take away points from either or both STR and LCK.
> Luck 7 with the implant is more than enough unless you're going for a crit build.
If you aren't going for a crit build, then you can safely lower it to 4. It's not like a minmax build won't be using the lucky shades and Boone's beret, anyway.

The point of Bozar is shooting a lot of bullets really accurate, IMO. My problem with it in NV is that is fails at "really accurate" part, at least unless you use VATS, maybe. I'd probably raise its DAM, but not by much, above the default LMG, but below or equal to the marksman carbine. Then I'd just make it really, really accurate - if that even possible for an automatic weapon within the engine. Rate of fire feels good enough to me.
>>
>>159173101
It has had 15 rounds burst, you probably should decrease damage even more and increase rate of fire for matching it, but with fnv damage threshold mechanic it would kill the gun even more.

What mods should I get for a lightly modded playthrough ?
>>
>>159225591
NVEC seems to do plenty, and it's only "1" mod.

>>
>>159224526
To reiterate, a high int lets you get the best skills to 100 when they're actually useful, not at 50 when the game is practically over. There are only a handful of skills that need to be raised quickly to get the most out of them anyway, like lockpick, science, repair, etc.

I always choose Skilled and Good Natured with 10 int. You should only be using 1 type of weapons, so those don't need to be 100. Good Natured takes those useless points and distributes them to better skills. Skilled is a negligible tradeoff with lower exp gain, so it should be picked too. You will have damn near 50 in the good skills at the start of the game.

If you're not going melee, strength is almost worthless. The strength requirement on weapons is a joke, so it only really affects character weight and melee damage. Endurance only matters to get the most out of implants, and that can be raised with intensive training. Perception isn't that great. Charisma is mostly worthless. Luck, at most, only needs to be 8. Agility can be raised with training, too, if needed... but then again, if you're not a shitter and can actually shoot properly with vats, much like gun skills, can be totally ignored unless you want certain perks.

In the end, there's no good way to minmax a character. There are too many variables. The best way is to simply have 9 or 10 int with educated.

Also speech and barter are surprisingly useful and are often used throughout the game with skill checks. Explosives is also the exception to the weapon rule, but only to about 45 to disarm all the traps. You can use skill magazines for any dialogue checks, except maybe end game unless you want to raise it.

>>

Maybe a mod, but keys are usually near the door they are used for, so just don't pick it up. It's not a big deal anyway, the exp gain is so small. You'd get the same exp for killing a bighorner, which aren't normally hostile and easy to kill.

All the dufflebags/caches don't have handprints. The named Automatic .45 doesn't either. Most of the locations that do have the hand print are quest spots, and actually the few that I do remember having one didn't really have shit in them.
>>
>>159244746
Lore-wise the place is BIG, the tribals didn't search every nook and cranny. It's like asking why Mojave still has loot.
>The named Automatic .45
Graham's gun? You get it from a footlocker which is a ~gameplay element~.
>>
>>159244873
>Graham's gun?
No, it's the automatic named. Found in some dufflebag near some dead ranger. Pretty hard to miss. I didn't even know it was there until I looked at the wiki for the uniques.
>>
>>159245343
>No, it's the automatic named
Survivalist's Rifle? It's semi-auto and .50 caliber. There's no unique .45 automatic gun in HH.

What's a great Tool I can use with Mod Organizer 1/2 or stand-alone where I can merge mods? Specifically esm, esp, bsa, etc. Want to combine a lot of weapons mods together. Same for wearables and etc.
For Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls V: Morrowind.
I'll search for merge on Nexus.

Probably to set them apart from regular wastelanders.
That could be why Vree has a ponytail.
It sure doesn't seem like a regular wastelanders hair and the BoS are anything but regular.
>>
>>159264161
>>159264632
I'd imagine a lot of the hair thing has to do with wearing power armor easier. You're going up her sweaty as fuck in that PA, and wearing that helmet with more comfortability is probably pretty important. Also is argue it's an old army think they may have never dropped.
>>
>>159265020
Oh, of course.
I wouldn't want my hair getting caught in the helmets innards while in combat, that's liable to get people killed.

> I saw the Emperor "twist" coming
Was there anyone who didn't see it? I'd have thought that it was deliberate if the game didn't act like you weren't supposed to get it instantly. With the Silent King at least everyone goes out of their way to convince you that he's there; the Shi practically go all "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" on you.
>>
>>159266415
>Was there anyone who didn't see it?
That probably depends upon the age people first played it at.
If you're playing it for the first time as a kid, you might not.
Still, it's pretty damn obvious.
>>
>>159266682
I was thirteen when I played F2 for the first time, and I'd still get it if I were ten. Seriously, who wouldn't?
>>
>>159266952
That's my point, I meant a literal child.
Think maybe 8 and under.
>>
>>159267071
Why the fuck would anyone allow a child to play Fallout? That's a ruined experience if there ever was one. I remember playing Torment at thirteen, barely understanding anything, giving up, and then finding out just how much I've missed when I returned to the game three years later.
>>
>>159262893
> gender swap of Salt-Upon-Wounds

>>
>>159267283
I played 1 when I was 7 or 8 and every time I replayed it, I found more and more things I'd missed and it only improved each subsequent playthrough.
I had a similar experience with 2 as well.

As to who would let their child play Fallout, I think my mother was just happy I wasn't playing Diablo as often.
>>
>>159267550

Well, I can't say for certain, but I'm glad it turned out that way.
I had a great time when I first played it and it only got better every time.

My first was Tactics
I was 14. My uncle gave me a punch of old strategy games he had, and Tactics was amongst then

I discovered 1 and 2 around the time 3 was announced. I was more into RPGs at this point so I bought F2, played it and loved it.
>>
>>159268773

Eh I wasn't blown away by it, which is why the series went to the back of mind.
I started getting into RPGs around the time Morrowind came out. So when I saw "Fallout 3, done by Bethesda" I was like shit I remember that Fallout thing, which is what got me looking for Fallout 1 and 2.

Still have my Fallout 2 disc, and it still works, which is surprising. 1 I bought on GOG ages ago, before it got migrated over to Steam and had Bethesda's watermark thrown all over it.

BoS are basically a holy order that praises technology instead of religion. The Scribes are basically Monks, so they shave their heads.

I don't think so. They just don't trust anyone else with power. They don't "praise" technology. How are scribes similar to Monks besides their haircut anyway?
