You can argue waiting times are a lame form of balance, but it is a form of balance and torcherino completely destroys that, and is typically the least interesting solution to whatever problem it is used to fix. I used this as a stress test.
From left to right.
Vampire bat, Catoblepas (with petrifying cloud), Cocktarice king, Death (with flying scythes and a deadly melee attack), Necromancer (with some skeleton "summoning"), zombie officer, Guardian Golem, Medusa (with slowness per hit) and Hyppogryph (which will make you rage hard even though it's fairly weak)
The thing is that even though they look samey they have different strategies, and you'll be fighting them in different places that make them harder to beat. I made a harpy that stands still and shoots feathers at you. It works kinda like the dickass archers from Dark souls.

If you install both Custom npcs and Grimoire of Gaia you can choose a GoG model.

Also you can't edit monsters, mobs or villagers save for the skin. BUT you can edit the standard "Steve" model. (make his legs longer, naga legs, spider legs, breasts and skin among other things)
Use that. The toughest task I have is adding a decent magic system that doesn't break the game.

Maybe I should clarify, I don't care about shady stuff, the people making them, or the politics of it. I am just talking about the packs themselves; yes, they need some work out of the box, but all-in-all I find them easy to run and preforming well. My computer handles them fine and I understand that won't be the case for everyone but if you can handle them they are fine.

well you have the root, right, that's where everything is sorted/stored under.

Then you have the next level, which I'm going to address as the character level. this is where all the different dialogue you can have with a character are stored.

then the actual parts of the conversation, which I've helpfully labelled the starting point for my shit as Intro. This contains the actual dialogue options, but are the NPC responses to your choices--topics of conversation--which have their ID (" : 6") appended to them.

I have no idea what the 'Talk' option is supposed to do, I just add it and set its id to -1 and it gets the actual option to click other stuff to work.
To get from one topic to another, within each dialogue option there's an ID listed after the Position number. Just put in the topic ID you want to move to when you select that option and it will automagically happen in conversation.

I'll write up a more detailed guide with what I understand so far and include labelled diagrams because this is already pretty confusing.

You're using it for a ceremony or what?
By itself, it doesn't do anything. When used for ceremonies, it's used in conjunction with other instruments to create certain effects.

Right now, I assume that you're just starting out, so your first task is mutating cows into Buffalo, whose drops will help you make more instruments, through a ceremony.

Make the in-game guidebook (which is still barebones), two flutes, two drums, and two wind chimes. You will have to play the two drums and flutes yourself. Eventually, you'd be able to get those Buffalo.

Metallurgy might be cool if it was heavily configured to delete the utterly useless bloat and make the recognizable mythical ores into something great. Most people are going to know that Mythril, Orichalcum and others like that are excellent metals for making weapons and armour.

But usually its thrown without enough effort put in to make it a good addition. It's just inventory bloat, that may or may not make something worth a damn.
Even worse if its in parallel with TiCon because it already has Manyullen tools which blow anything from Metallurgy out of the water.

Botania is fine. It has memes, but you can also opt to not care about them.

Nether Ores, though kind of pointless once quarries are involved, gives the Nether a purpose once you've found a Blaze spawner or made one yourself. Or a Wither skelly spawner if you need Nether Stars for some reason.
And that purpose is to be quarried, so, YMMV.

Thaumcraft probably won't make it in because I've overused it in the past. The pack has a lot of biome specific ore gen though, so I'd love to put infused stone under corresponding biomes.

Garedenstuff and Decocraft look nice, I'll make many sacrifices for the pedestal of aesthetics.

I've tried spawning one in, spawning the infused one in, crafting the normal one (can't craft the infused one because i can't get the ceremony to start), nothing.
Even read the fucking source code, from what little I understand I think it's supposed to be activated on a right-click (and a shift-right click on the totem base would start a ceremony) but nothing is happening, there is no feedback whatsoever that i'm doing anything right, or even anything wrong. It's just plain not doing anything.

Notice how almost no new content has come from the community, prefering to recycle the same tired concepts revolving around the same old mod staples. i got it mainly for early game, which my personal modpack is seriously lacking. the tipi seems like a comfy alternative to building a fully fleshed out house for the first few days, and the totem buffs could be useful later in the game, shame the totems just look like tinner logs rather than actual carved totems

i'm also planning on getting some buffalos roaming around the local biome ASAP so i can hunt and forage before i move on to husbandry and farming, giving my progression a more "natural flow". shame there isn't a proper mod for that (other than starting off in the twilight forest dimension to hunt venison and boar)

I want to have it curved in an arc with a courtyard in the middle. It might come all the way around to make a full circle but I'm not sure yet. Right now I'm just laying foundation and following the terrain with some small adjustments, just flattened the courtyard area.

Yes, but there are plenty of substitutes.
I believe that Thaumic bases, for example, has stabilizers that are simply solid blocks.

Well fuck, I regret not having remembered it earlier, now I really don't feel like making a new world for it alone. The only issue I had was how slow it seemed to make world generation on my toaster, but that might have been because I decided to try exploring a redwood forest biome out of the gate.

I think I'll just ask you guys for recommendations to individual mods.
I want a thirst and food mod that has benefits other than allowing the player to run. I have found lots of more food and the thirst mod but they don't do anything meaningful in terms of survival, usually stuff like temporary potion effects.

More sea content, ships. I have found Aquatic abyss for underwater life but nothing for on water.

I have not found mods that extend tiers well other than Tinkers Construct. I'm not a fan of going to other dimensions. Anything fit that criteria?

Is there a mod that allows me to disable cow/pig/sheep spawning in the overworld and replace them with untameable wild animals so I have to spend some time hunting before I can "discover" husbandry? Animals that fight back would be nice.

At this point I'd even be willing to accept a mod that just allows me to tune mob spawning so I can replace overworld animals with deer/boar/rams from Twilight Forest and then just set an arbitrary point during my progression where I'm allowed to use TF's dust of transformation to turn them into their overworld equivalent.

If I'm not mistaken it's because the log blocks aren't connected adjacently, sometimes they're only diagonally "connected" and that makes more work for the veinminer/treecapitator algorithm. If people's tree schematics were fixed wthis would be less of an issue, plus optimizing the veinminer/treecapitator mods would be much, much easier.

Villagers remember their village but don't remember their houses.
Require villagers to poll the village for houses, then assign them to said house. If no house is available they start to build a new house. Do the same for their profession, so they'll actively own or take care of a field, animal pen, library etc. So during the day they chill at their assigned job location and night they go to bed at their own designated home. A village keeps track of it's jobs and what positions it needs to fulfill. So in case they have no farmers the next generation of children will fill that position, or if they have no guards to keep them safe they become militia, the balance of jobs change proportionate to the size of the village. So a small village might not need figure heads like a priest, librarians, smiths and will try to recruit farmers so they don't starve but as it expands and becomes larger they shift over to a larger pool of jobs.

I totally reccomend using TC armors, they are more aesthethic, oh and you can always use TiCon with Tinkers Defense and Mine and Blade, TiDef lets you make different materials armor and shields in the tool forge of ticon but theres only three type of armor and materials doesnt affect protection, but they are comfy and cool looking. For Mine and Blade for dual wielding and TiDef needed for those shields, and TiCon for avoiding mawpc weapons and using instead wood crossbow and iron/steel swords or something not too powerful.

The cool thing about TiDef is that you can make any kind of armor of different and lets more customization for armor and tools/weapons in the finishing anvil. I've added a fuckton of uniques and hopefully it will be balanced as long as you don't fuck up and miss them.

Now should I go for the classicvania feel, where you can pretty much finish the game with the initial skills you got, or the metroidvania one, where you earn different skills which allow you to progress and blah blah.

Both are already implemented. So far you can beat the game with double jump and all sorts of tricks, but you can also go human mode and clear it.
