>>
>>159083249
I think scourges made from heavy metals are still lightsabers. I haven't seen whips work nearly as well. Pickaxes are still the secretly OP weapon.
Force translation mechanics make combat a lot more brutal than before and really moved things up in complexity.

Also, armor deterioration is new to me and it's killing me. I went with the whole "wooden shields work perfectly fine" and now my dwarves shields are falling apart and being destroyed in the middle of combat and I'm very worried.

>>159084628
You've got scourges and whips backwards. Scourges do edge damage, so heavier metals aren't typically the better choice. Steel is good, but adamantine is better. They basically behave like swords with only one attack and lower penetration. Whips are the weapons that have always been referred to as lightsabers. They do blunt damage and concentrate it to a very small contact area, making dense metal whips devestating. Steel is good, copper is better and silver whips are amazing. If you mod or get a ridiculously lucky roll on a strange mood, the platinum whips are even better.

So you gotta add a couple of tags to make it workable at a bare minimum.

I suggest stance climber where relevant, can open doors of course, and go into the teeth entry, then add grasp to the back teeth.

Normally you would just add this stuff and have the animal available when making an adventurer, but I went in to gm-editor and took a giant lion I bumped into, find the nemesis entry, change the flags to retired adventurer/adventurer, then go retire my current character and take control.

So now I'm running around as a giant lion now eating stuff.

It's a little silly that I knapped stones held in my teeth and made a basalt axe which I strap to my chest somehow, but you gotta be able to butcher kills and I don't know how to let claws work for that.

> Thanks to everybody that helped out in October! The beginning of the month is going to see the editing of a textbook I've been working on with Tanya Short of Kitfox Games arrive at the deadline with a completed manuscript

So, what's the deal with Tarn and this cunt? She parades him around in some random convention, and now she's making him work for her. Innocent friendship or are we going to see Toady getting his autistic heart broken soon?
>>
>>159101216
Technically, yes, but in practice... they'll favor one or the other, and they won't reload properly if dual wielding, you can do it as an adventurer but it's not ideal.

With their armor skill high enough they don't get encumbered by it, so that's nice.

Also, I'm loving this lion thing, I think I'm going to have to add the grasp teeth to all the big cats because I just snuck up on a dwarf out in the middle of a town with nobody nearby, clamped down on their throat and choked them out, then cut them up and ate them.

>>
>>159104010
I was thinking about doing that with an interaction, yeah.

I must say it is a lot more fun just surviving by running around biting stuff in the head than I expected it to be.
>>
>>159105297
Yeah, I spent some time playing as a Giant Jumping Spider, shit was fun as hell.

It does get kind of tiresome only biting things, but you've got claws too. Do Giant Lions have [CAN_LEARN] by default?
>>
>>159105445
Nah, should add that too, I'll probably toss in a couple tweaks so they can be used as outsiders. I felt like I would miss being able to talk but it's too amusing stumbling around drunk eating people to care.

Totally going to keep the "predators can grasp with their molars" change though.

ikr
>>
>>159096579
This spurred a long investigation, checking, arena testing, etc.

My conclusion is that BOTH whips and scourges are significantly nerfed from what they used to be. Even adamantine scourges would only succeed by causing death by 1000 papercuts, and denser materials made them no better. Whips perform significantly better with weight but never ever good enough to replace the warhammer as the blunt weapon choice. Force translation on the warhammer is giving it a lot more power.

The best multi-purpose combat tool is the steel pick(uses mining skill). The pick is incredibly strong overall, capable of severing and killing unarmored limbs and necks quickly like a shortsword(or the slightly inferior battle axe), delivering force like a warhammer against highly armored opponents, or penetrating moderately armored and damaging brains and hearts and livers like a spear (although the spear in particular has the potential to pierce tougher materials while picks are much more reliant on the material they're made from).

Edged weapons of very large size and dense materials have incredible potential to penetrate armor and cause dismemberment. Most of these are impossible to equip in fortress mode, such as the Greataxe and Halberd. An actual cut-anything lightsaber, slicing through layers of steel, silk, skin, flesh, and bone for severing of limbs is possible-- with artifact weapons made of very dense material (ie. platinum) and large weapon size (ie. Halberd) if the dwarf wielding is sufficiently large, strong, and skilled. Basically, if the force behind the edge weapon is strong enough to get through the steel on the outside, it has excessive amounts of the force required to go all the way through.
>>
>>159093762
Engravings don't give passing dwarves happy thoughts, so engraving just raises abstract room/fort value. It's useful for rooms, but if you engrave your hallways you're just inviting invaders, and if you can't engrave, walls/floors made of bars/blocks I think can have the same value as exceptional engravings. This can go pretty far with things like silver- you get 4 bars per native silver ore you mine and melt(and if you have some silver you usually have a lot of it), which is 4 smooth silver walls. Then a masterful silver cabinet/throne/table studded with and decorated in high quality cut gems can have so many times the magnitude of value in a single square you can easily absorb the loss of engraved walls. And also give passing dwarves a happy thought.
>>
I went to a necromancer tower in adventure mode to prep me for tomb raiding. I can 1 shot most zombies with a blow to the head or neck, but I'm wondering if there is a faster way to do this. What's the most efficient way to kill a few thousand undead?
>>
>>159114134
A->a->head->a(or whatever your weapons strongest attack is) until they're all dead.

Alternatively just sprint past them, grab the slab, become undead (no exertion so you can fight forever), equip all the shield you have, plant a weight on your . key and go afk for a few minutes. Assuming you have the [MORE] text set to the highest value you can, this ensures completely safe, completely AFK shield user, armour user, endurance and observer training.

Or you could just run past them all again.

So those knife eared hippies finaly bought me a breeding pair of giant tigers.

I have been mass slaugthering puppies and kept ~10+ wardogs at the depo so they buy time till dorfs get in, and i can safley close the gate, diverting the enemy to the killlanes.
Now when those kitties get frisky, i can delegate that duty as i assume they are much more effective, so how do i honorably retire those doggies (its bad enough i keep slaugthering their puppies)
Also, i want one for each military dorfs, but i fear they will like them as pets so when they inevitably die they get bad thoughts. SO does manually assigning animals coutnt as pet or no?

>>

Assigning work animals doesn't count as giving a pet no, but it can still give a negative thought on death especially if you dorf is afraid of death.
>>
>>159112548
You seem to be working off of some flawed premeses.

Whips weren't nerfed, and scourges were never good. Whips still work exactly the same as they did when they got the reputation they currently enjoy. Since then skulls have thickened, pain threshholds have increased, and force translation mechanics went in. Whips are exactly the same, and still do what they have always been good at. Chipping bones and causing pain.

Your conclusion on picks is a known thing, that they do a battle axe's job better than a battle axe and are a poor man's spear. But a throwaway line in there is all kinds of wrong: "the slightly inferior battle axe" suggests that you think battle axes are a lesser weapon than short swords, which are hands down the worst native edged weapon for dwarves. All of their attacks are a worse version of another weapon's attack.

The last bit is where you really go off the rails, though. You seem to be missing a basic premise of weapons material science. Heavy/dense is good for blunt weapons, and hard/sharp is good for edged weapons. Platinum is one of the worst, if not the absolute worst, materials for an edged weapon (such as a halberd). When hitting a harder material, such as steel, they won't penetrate at all. Any unstopped force from the edged damage will be converted to a lesser amount of blunt damage which may break bones in the case of a very strong fighter using an artifact, but is more likely to just bruise and cause some incidental joint damage. Furthermore, because of the vast material superiority of steel, the weapon will likely be damaged or broken of it isn't an artifact. Nothing platinum is going to be severing the limbs of any armored opponents, for that you want bronze<iron<steel<adamantine. You didn't specify what kind of tests you did, but I hope you didn't base them on that fundamentally flawed understanding of material science.

The whole artifact update is gonna make adventure mode way more fun. At the moment, if you're roleplaying a servant of a kingdom instead of the typical murderhobo, you tend to run out of things to do once you clear out the local bandits, outlaws, and troubling wildlife/monsters. But with artifacts being stolen and traded all the time, things suddenly become much more dynamic as you travel the world seeking magical treasure to increase your homeland's reputation.

Red lines don't mean war. If you're at war it says WAR in red. The red lines indicate a hostile diplomatic relationship, which goblin civs always have with every other civ on account of being snatchers. It's kind of a pedantic distinction, though, as the only possible interactions with a goblin civ are violent and automatically start a war with them unless you mod the game to play a snatcher civ yourself.

Adamantine, especially if you have high quality levels on the adamantine, but mostly both are so high end differences between artifacts and adamantine become irrelevant, but successful parrying is a factor that SEEMS to happen more with the adamantine weapon, but more science is required for conclusive results.

>>159131642
Whips gained something of a ~33% speed penalty(longer recovery time), lowered weapon weight, and more. They're significantly nerfed.

Battle axes ARE worse than short swords, both by maths and by performance. Short swords outperform battle axes against soft targets slightly, both do significantly more poorly against armored targets unless they exceed the material, but short swords offer a stab attack, which offer significantly increased likelyhood of disarming/disabling a well-armored opponent. I'd avoid both short swords and battle axes, however.

hard/sharp, heavy/dense thumbrules yes yes yes yes yes. What you're not getting is that under extremes of heavy/dense it can make up for the lack of hard/sharp, and when hitting a harder material hard enough, it can penetrate anyway. Platinum is better than silver and copper on edge weapons, too. The take away here is that Toady did a very very awesome job at modelling these things.

As a side note, edge weapons actually use weapon quality factor very significantly, where blunt weapons do not seem to take weapon quality in as a factor at all.

The game seems determined to kill my fort off with invasions.
I lost several early caravans due to some x-files shit
Migrants stopped arriving in year 2
And I've had ~100 unit strong goblin invasions twice a year for two years.
I'm going to die to simple attrition. Dwarf numbers are slowly shrinking, dwarf activity is beginning to be limited to making steel armor and weapons and training, and I'm losing the dwarfpower needed to accomplish any major fortress-saving project.

Yeah, but depending on the circumstances that certain point moves a bit or a lot further away.
Big embarks, for example work a lot better.
But if you already use small embarks with little stuff and few things, it won't be that noticeable.

Game performance getting increasingly bad in DF is inherent to its design. The more things you keep track of in a more and more detailed fashion, the lower your performance is gonna be. There is no way around that. Late game performance will ALWAYS be shit.
The only thing that will change is with improved performance people will play bigger embarks do more stuff and the game will allow you to keep track of more things.

to be fair, there are a number of optimizations that Toady refuses to implement, among them standardized materials.

The only reason MasterWork DF runs at all is because of standardized material templates. (I kind of hate that MW takes out all the different types of sand and a bunch of stone types. >-''I don't fuck with no trees''-You tell yourself, and try to talk your friends out of it
>Of course, when you turn to advice them, they have already start sprinting towards the nymphs in the green hills
>But not Verliko, Verliko is just standing there, with a grave look, sitting in the ground, indiferent, aparently, to the previous wishes that seemed to consume his soul
>Before you realize whats gonna happen, Verliko tells you
>''You should tell them goodbye, Lembuk, you are not gonna see them again alive''

They are good for chopping off limbs. For normal-sized humanoid creatures pick axes are a little better for that, but the bigger the creature gets the less that advantage becomes. Once you get to the size of larger domestic livestock battle axes are better at dismemberment. Despite anon's claims, short swords aren't better. Battle axes have more force, larger contact area, deeper penetration. Short swords do have a stab attack, although it's objectively worse than its slash, which is objectively worse than a battle axe's chop. There are some niche cases where it's useful.
All told, having axedwarves is a good thing, but they shouldn't be your only units. No military ever suffered from rolling in some miners, and in many cases miners will outperform axedwarves of equal skill.

I've had a tavern going for years now. Masterwork clear glass windows overlooking the lake, two artifact tables, several royal bedrooms for staying at, all furniture is made out of silver and encrusted with gems.

Far exceeds value for the "royal" classification, but since your post I've removed all overlapping rooms and added a few touches.

Nobody visits.

BUT! A caravan arrived successfully now on the 5th year. Things might be turning around. From the news it sounds like a lot of the other settlements are being lost to "The Enlightening Seductions"

What are the notable "villains" of the world you're playing in right now? I'm currently playing Masterwork (yes yes muh bloat muh Meph's a shithead) and the most notable evils in my world are:

>A goblin kingdom of 20000 people and ruled by a powerful demon prince, located in the farthest reaches of the world and protected by hundred of miles of evil mountain biome, making them virtually inaccessible.

>A human kingdom ruled by vampire lords who swear fealty to an old and terrible Giant.

>A black dragon who laid with a werewolf and somehow produced an unholy brood of 8 more dragons, all of whom nest in an abandoned fortress, slowly growing until they are strong enough to bring terror to the world.

there is never any reason to use a dormitory.

Even if you have all the beds set up right next to each other, you can make each bed its own room and assign it a size of 1 tile.

Also, you don't have to assign beds to dorfs, you can just make the room and they will automatically claim a bed.

>You find yourself conscious after what feels like days of floating through a void of rest.
>You are immediately aware of a pain pumping through your head, and an oozing feeling in your right arm.
>As your vision clears you take account of upturned barrels and the strong odor of alcohol wafting around the tiny stone room.
>'Ah shite,' you think to yourself, 'Ahve, up and pissed myself."
>You look down at your lap to see how bad it is and instead if alcohol you are propped against the wall in a three inche deep pool of blood.
>Adrenaline hits your system as you now realize the overturned barrels are a barricade against the door.
>"This must be the private alcohol storage of the mayor, that greedy elf fucking bastard."

>A. Check self for wounds
>B. Attempt to start digging your way out of the room

Well, good luck, DF is hard as fuck and you have to be slightly autistic to enjoy it.

My advice:

1) Download Lazy Newb Pack. (For real)
2) Learn how to use Dwarf Therapist (It comes with Lazy Newb Pack)
3) To get anywhere, you need to learn how to dig. To dig, you need a pick and a dwarf with the mining labor enabled. Press d, then hit d again for mining, or h to build a channel in the floor.
4) To grow food, you need to grow on soil. Underground plants only grow underground, above ground plants only grow above ground. Press b to go to the build menu, and P to build a plot. The seeds you start with only let you plant them underground.
5) Eventually you are going to need to build a well and possibly a resevoire. Once you've got the basics down, remember: if you are building a resevoire, build a hatch where you're well is going to be, then close the floodgate to your resevoire, otherwise the water will come up through your well and flood your fortress.

Also, because making military dorfs are so complicated, its best to bring somebody with the hunting labor enabled and make them plenty of bolts at the crafting workshop.

They will suffice against early threats, but eventually you will need to learn how to use the military.

>You are capable of moving your fingers, but the bone is visible through the abrased skin and it will need some doctoring soon.
>Running your fingers along your bald head you do not feel any cuts and it does not seem tender from bruising. The pain in your head is likely due from blood loss, or a hangover.

You can walk right up to any bandit camp/city/dark fortress and slaughter pretty much everyone there before anyone reacts, because they're all too busy pissing their pants. Plus, since each bandit camp is its own separate entity, even after you fuck up one the next one you go to will be totally docile towards you.

And then, when you go to report that you effortlessly decapitated the bandit leader while he commented on the weather, you have to manually scroll through 15 pages of "i killed a crow in the fields of bumblefucking two weeks ago" before you can find the dude you actually want to talk about

The whole system is currently hell

In retrospect this explains a lot, but I've had plenty of tense duels with people that it isn't a problem for me.

You know you can type in the name of the guy you want to talk about so you don't scroll through everything right?

There's a workaround kinda.

Claim the site, recruit hearthpeople, get them all into the keep with you, then give one of them the position of lord/lady, they'll inherit the hearthpeople and a strong claim. You can then hearth for them.
>>
>>159197431
How badly will that mess up the city? Will people leave or will criminals increase? My goal for this playthrough is to basically do everything I can to ensure the town I've adopted survives and prospers, and I'd rather not have it torn apart in a coup.
>>
>>159197876
If you max out on hearthpeople and have them in the keep when you transfer leadership it works fine, they'll keep serving and you can become a hearthperson and serve as well to do quests.

I can understand why it's cool to have some structures on the surface (it's kinda lame to imagine your fort just appearing to be a small hole in the ground from an outside perspective), but why would you want to build your entire fort up there? Especially in the form of something that you would refer to as a town?

>surface
>limited room for expansion without use of towers
>vulnerable to outside attacks

>underground
>enemies have to pass through your death halls to reach anything of value
>explore, build, and gather materials all at once
>easier expansion

The game's pretty clearly built around the assumption that you're going straight underground. A traditional town seems more like challenge run material.

I mean yeah probably but I've been doing pretty well for myself. Haven't been besieged or anything, although that's probably because I'm dirt poor. Oh and I forgot to mention, I'm playing as humans. They seem to work just like dwarves though, only without the booze addiction, so its actually kinda easy-mode. Not that I'm complaining. Managing the farm was hard enough until I figured out how to use workshops, so the idea of setting up a brewing industry as well seems a little intimidating, although I'll get around to it eventually.

put it in game folder/data/art and call it vector.png
go to game folder/data/init and open init.txt
change GRAPHICS to YES, GRAPHICS_FONT and GRAPHICS_FULLSCREEN to vector.png like this:

if you're using DFHack, change PRINT_MODE to TWBT (makes text look better)
here's an example:

>>
>>159223369
I'm not sure if you're just memeing or serious. It's not multithreaded. A powerful single-core P4 will do just as well as an average contemporary multicore CPU.
>>
>>159223634
it absolutely won't. not only does a modern cpu have VASTLY superior single-thread performance, it has a much larger cache, and it is also far more capable to adequately supply larger and faster ram for other reasons. and single-thread performance barely matters in DF, it's all about cache misses slowing down your system and optimizing for that with a large CPU cache and fast ram. a single core pentium completely sucks compares to a modern cpu in every single aspect.
>>
>>159223846
this isn't a 4channy superiority hate response, a single-core pentium will just completely suck compared to a modern cpu. additionally, you can always turn off cores to get a higher overclock, but again, even single-thread performance won't matter (but the power to sature RAM does)
>>
>>159223634
why the fuck did this guy start talking about multithreading, anyway?
>>
>>159223846
You're not wrong about cpus, obviously, but this shiny new "fps death is caused by cache misses" meme is horseshit.
>>
Will the i7-7700k be good for DF?
>>
>>159224668
is it? it seems to scale pretty hard with created items. pathable tiles or pathing units aren't as bad in comparison (unless you're adding a loto f new units at once), and they're the real overblown issue. there are a lot of things hogging fps, like fluids, but the whole "inevitable decline towards 0 fps" slowdown seems to be caused by the growing number of created and never-deleted items (items that are traded away are still kept in memory apparently, and i'm not sure about autodump-destroy anymore).

also, fps seem to correspond much more to ram speed. i put a minor overclock on my ddr3 ram, 1333mhz to 1600mz, and went from 10 to 13 fps. i guess i wouldn't know if i'm missing something, but why do you think it's horseshit?
>>
>>159225154
no, tiny cache. you could get one of those l4 cache cpus, but it's all just conjecture. maybe you ram latency is ultimately more important, maybe quad-channel is worth it, nobody has any real data on this. but that cpu seems unideal.
>>
>>159224668
Uh, cache misses are a bad thing unless you have like gigabytes of on die cache, mr. quantum processor.
>>
>>159225245
Yes, fps loss does scale with created items, but it also scales with plenty other factors, chiefest among them being the number creatures on the map and the number of pathable tiles. If you want to see instant fps death just embark on a really big map. If you want to avoid fps death forever and ever embark on a tiny map and keep below than 30 pop. This is a known thing; people have been doing it to perpetually stave off fps death for years.
I'm not saying df doesn't have any overhead in cache misses. But going from the obviously correct "DF sometimes has cache misses" to "cache misses occupy most of the resources DF consumes" is absurd. And that IS the conclusion that you have to draw if you're going to claim that cache misses are causing fps death. Realistically, a cache miss shouldn't be dramatically more resource intensive than a cache hit anyway. Another squirt in a bucket that's already full of things demanding resources.
Also, unless you have some original research you aren't sharing with the class, I see no reason expect that large item counts would be a more significant source of cache misses than any other potential cause; I might even hazard the guess that pathfinding, or the literal dozens of variables being tracked for every creature loaded on your map, would be more likely to cause them.
>>
>>159228062
Are you talking about CPU cache misses, where instead of working on data in the superfast CPU cache(s) it pulls from RAM, which is slower, or the godawful RAM version, more commonly known as a page swap?

ps: you can buy entire caravans with a single masterwork steel item
>>
>>159229717
Yeah, 200% profit is the common ballpark for good appraisers.
Considering how much goods you can produce you have no real reason to be stingy.
In fact, giving them more profit will make your site more attractive, and they'll bring more goods next time. So, always give as much as you can. If you're not purposely working against it, it shouldn't be a problem to buy the entire caravan several times over every time.
>>
>>159229717
You're giving them a very small profit. That's less than 50%, which is pretty much the lowest you're going to get away with from an ecstatic trader and legendary negotiator. Stop trying to jew him.
Also, appraisal doesn't affect trading success, and broker isn't a skill.

My adventurer was a rabbit woman spearman, who set out from her cosy underground dwarven fortress to clear the area of dangerous beasts. Her finest hour was her last. Having participated in a number of hare-raising battles, she (and a few drunks) had largely rid the province of Giant Alligators, Bandits, and a small camp of Kobolds.

However, upon her return journey, the small group passed through a haunted forest. All perished to packs of undead dingoes, except for Ingish. She managed to escape, but not without having one of her arms rendered suffering severe nerve damage.

On her way back to the fortress, to deliver the grim news, she stumbled across a hidden bandit camp. This one was no rag-tag group of flea-ridden humans, nor of weak kobolds. These were armed and armoured Goblin warriors.

Nevertheless, Ingish knew she could not pass by. Who knew what havoc these fiends could wreak upon the nearby hamlets? Determined to drive out these interlopers, she snuck into the camp, as stealthily ass possible.

Her first few kills were a perfect success. Using an iron spear, 3 goblins were slain before they even knew what killed them. However, the 4th goblin had a thick skull, and resisted the blow. Immediately, he turned and trained his crossbow on the rabbit woman. Before he could fire, the spear thrust once more, and the goblin was killed. The others had been alerted though, and now a wrestler was barrelling down upon her.

The fight was bloody, and at some point, the spear was lodged deep in the goblin's lower body, yet still he fought on. The brawl was ended when Ingish, using only her powerful legs, bodyslammed the wrestler into the dirt, where he gave into the pain.

At this point, only a crossbowman and the chief was left. The crossbowman, having apparently fallen asleep while mounting guard, had not reacted at all during the killings, and sat sound asleep not far away.

The goblin leader approached the tired and wounded rabbit woman, cracking his whip menacingly, and speaking in his native tongue under his copper mask. The sound grated on the long ears of Ingish, and she stood, filled with renewed determination.

She charged at the chief, dodging the whip as it slashed the air. With no weapon, she used her native abilities, and leapt into the air, hurtling with the speed of a canonball into the chest of the goblin. Sent falling backwards, the bandit leader was scraped along the hard-packed earth. Something snapped. Landing heavily Ingish ran over to him, and savagely kicked him in the ribs. The goblin pushed himself up with a snarl, and a flick ofthe whip. It was the turn of Ingish to be sent reeling in pain, as the whip connected with her arm.

There came the grim realisation that both of her arms were unusable. With a snarl as menacing as a rabbit can manage, She dove back into the fray. The fight was even more savage than all her others. The goblin was evidently a seasoned veteran, and wielded his whip with deadly speed. Nevertheless, Ingish evaded his attacks and slowly wore him down with powerful kicks, and using her teeth when required.

Eventually, both combatants were on the brink of unconciousness. They seemed to be evenly matched, and there was no telling who would survive. Staggering, Ingish started to back away, at the speed of someone who has gone beyond their limit. The goblin, equally slowly, plodded after her, his whip dragging in the dirt, and his lips flecked with blood. Suddenly, Ingish plumbed the deepest depths of her willpower, and turned. The goblin halted. With only one goal, the rabbit ran at him. Her speed increased, until she was sprinting, sprinting as only a rabbit can.

The Goblin lashed at her, but it mattered not. She slammed into the fiend with the strength of Armok himself. The whip was dropped, and they landed heavily. The goblin was driven into the ground, and his body went limp. His breath came in ragged gasps, and it seemed as if his spine was broken. Ingish herself was breathing raggedly. It hurt. Her breath came in short, sharp, painful bursts.

She knelt next to the unconcious goblin, and seeing his breath, she kicked at his head. Her strength, however, was depleted, and the mere act of it, sent her tumbling to the earth. her vision flickered, and she fell unconcious.

She awoke, hacking and wheezing. Blood clung to her filthy fur, and her throat burned. The goblin was crawling. Slowly, slowly, he laboriously pulled himself east, as far as he could get from the mad rabbit. Ingish stood, and, each step an exercise in agony, stumbled over to the goblin. He turned his head, and wept at her approach.

She kneeled next to him, again, and he weakly pawed the air. Her jaws opened, and she struck. Tearing, tearing at the meat of his throat, like a wild dog snarling over his kill. The goblin, perhaps mercifully, fell into darkness once more. Finally, Ingish opened his throat, and blood ran out. A minute, and the goblin stopped breathing.

Ingish attempted to stand, but realised that she had stopped being able to breathe. The whip had broken something in her chest. She lay down, and found the earth had become surprisingly soft. There would be no titles, no rewards for her heroism. Just a windy field and a goblin corpse for company. Ingish decided there were worse ways to die. As the darkness claimed her, she felt as if someone was smiling at her. No one was near however. And then she died.

>>
>>159228062
that's explicitly what i'm saying, pathing being such a huge loss is the real meme, not cache misses. people way overblow the fps loss from pathing to the point where they impose absurd population limits on themselves - you can save a lot of fps with fewer dwarves, but each additional unit doesn't add that much pathing calculations to be a concern, and playing with 30 dwarves is just bizarre. this pathing loss thing is just information that gets repeated over and over - the real issue is each additional migrant inherently both having and creating a whole ton of items, which is a much bigger issue than the bit of pathing (which could always be mitigated anyway). i have 538 dwarves and i've recently finished walling up hell, and i definitely haven't had that experience. i'm on a 4x4 embark with open caverns and so many fully mined out levels, really quite a lot of pathable tiles, and the thousands of stone and crafts and clothes and creature and map stuff were always a far bigger toll on fps then an additional ten migrants. sure i have extremely low fps now (10fps), but over the time it took to get there, i've definitely noticed an additional 100 dwarves being a drop in the bucket compared to never once having atomsmashed any used clothes or unused stone. the only real concern with pathing is designated areas - i don't know why, but large designations shred fps, probably because of how the job system acquires dwarves. just having dwarves (or pathing animals) really isn't that big a deal, it's definitely the actual meme. nobody even mentions cache misses, they all talk about multicore cpus and crazy high fps while paused.
>>
How do I stop fps death? I have so many dead goblins around my fort that it's killing my fps. I'm at 9 zoomed in and not looking at anything. I put the bodies in a refuse pile but they don't go away.

if graphically displaying things is having an fps impact in dwarf fortress for you, you need to change your PRINT_MODE to something like VBO in your init.txt. also, you need to either atomsmash the bodies or autodump destroy them with dfhack, or look up the dfhack plugin that makes corpses rot away. but it's probably being caused by something else than corpses. check out the wiki page on maximizing framerate and just go through all your shit, probably a waterfall or a locked pet mostly.

don't produce plate until you have mail for everyone.

also, don't produce leggings, on dwarves high boots and mail shirts will give full leg and body protection.

so basically, you only need helms, mail shirts, gauntlets and high boots.

2d, GRAPHIX. Altough it's getting there in systems complexity it still doesn't feels like DF. (There are organs and shit that behave similarly). What kills it for me it's the fact that it isn't 3D. (And the shit storytellers). Surprisingly it can still be very easy when you get the hang of it, like DF.

Well I have 2D and 3D graphics on my DF. I guess I'm gonna pirate it and see how much I like it before buying it

>>159240804
>only need mail shirts
noooo this will get your dwarves killed. Steel Mail will stop an edged weapon but it gives almost no protection against blunt. The dwarf will get punched in the body and their heart will explode.

Stick with the breastplate with mail shirt underneath and greaves.

Avoid stacking mail shirts- it does reduce the chance an edged weapon will get through but it'll be overkill and that much armor will slow a dwarf down which is a much bigger disadvantage.

It eats up FUEL like crazy yeah. Full armor steel armor dwarf costs 11 steel bars, 12 if you include a steel weapon. You save 4 bars if you cheap out on the breastplate and greaves.

It takes a total of 3 units of fuel total to make 1 steel bar from start to finish. (Of course, you make steel bars 2 at a time so it takes 6 units of fuel for the whole reaction.) So 12 bars requires 36 units of fuel. It then takes another 8 units of fuel to actually forge the items, costing 44 units of fuel per outfitted dwarf.

You can save a lot of fuel if you with a magma smelter and magma forge. The 12 bars would cost you 24 fuel, and that's all. You also get a larger net gain of fuel from turning bituminous coal and lignite into coke with a magma smelter.

So when you're looking at putting 10 dwarves into a full suit, 440 units of fuel.

I just wanted to point out how much a magma smelter/forge provides. I don't recommend cheating, you'll just cheat yourself.

A really big help is finding rich sedimentary layers on the embark screen. I've found consistent success targeting split biome embarks, where one half has an aquifer and is heavily forested(especially near freshwater lakes, some savannas will work too but less trees sucks), and the other is not and is typically mountainous with some height(and not the super tall mountains), especially if the mountain has some kind of soil or sand layer listed. Both should say shallow metals, and one of them needs to have flux stone listed. Even if you can't find the flux stone in the upper layers you're probably sitting on a metamorphic layer with lots of marble, and the mountain biome is often metamorphic.

You'll almost always have an abundance of lignite/bituminous coal in addition to lots of trees, the non-aquifer biome lets you dig around the aquifer, and you'll find all three types of iron ores, and usually can find gypsum. The metamorphic layer will usually yield silver as a valuable metal.

What you want to avoid is volcanoes. Volcanoes and other near-surface magma means you're further from the kinds of metamorphic and thick sedimentary layers you want. It's nearly impossible to get iron, flux, and coke at those sites. Every embark always has the magma sea for magma.

I built a danger room of training spears on levers. You know the abortionator setup. Trouble is I didn't realise all the training spears are master quality. My military were immediately hospitalised when the lever was pulled. I let them recover and sent them back in. I'm on my fourth round of this now. Weeding out the weak who die from spears to the head. The length of time it's taking is kind of defeating the purpose of it but I think it's funny.
>>
>>159250740
There are other methods of getting magma up to your fort. Minecarts are much easier than pump stacks. Magma pistons are definitely less labor intensive, but require more knowledge of the game mechanics.
>I feel like the game kind of rewards you for cheating.

unless you didn't equip armor, those spears are are doing blunt attacks after being blocked by the armor

weapon quality has zero impact on blunt attacks

it's the force translation that's crippling the dwarves. most likely a chain of events: hits the head or leg, damages nerves, knocks unconscious, or damages a joint required to stand
dwarf falls prone as result
training spear now hits with twice the momentum on the prone dwarf
dwarf takes a yakety sax hit

don't worry about danger rooms. Just train your dwarves normally. It works just fine.

Nope, the only way to kill it with water is to drown it or to use water as ammo in a minecart shotgun. And I'm not certain that inorganic FBs can drown. It might cool the surrounding tiles long enough for you to get a few dwarves beside it, though. If they can path through the steam.

Anything that's made of fire like that won't be put out by water- they'll steam off all the water. You could drop that guy in the ocean and it wouldn't put him out.

You'll need to trap him in a pit or kill him with a cave-in or something you can launch. He MIGHT drown, I don't know. Crossbows might work if you fire enough at him for long enough.

While I'm thinking about it, I think intentionally causing a cave-in and dropping him into a pit is the best idea. Then I would experiment on him- channel water to fall into his pit, use him as a target for a firing range, and eventually see what shooting him with a ballista would do.

>pathing being such a huge loss is the real meme
Some memes are true.
Here's the thing about pathing, that is probably preventing you from being able to recognize its cost. As your fps drops (from anything), additional pathing strain shows diminishing loss. So you might find, for example, that your climb to 100 dwarves has corresponded with a drop to 70 fps, and then going up to 200 dwarves you only dropped to 50, and infer from that the number of creatures you have isn't a significant factor in the drop. Then you notice that adding 10 dwarves to 400 when you were at 15 fps didn't affect your fps at all, and you're sure you're right. However, fps is deterministically related to the passage of time in the game. So losing 30% of your fps at 100fps and 30% at 70fps are going to result in different visible fps losses, but both will extend the time it takes for any given thing to happen by the same proportion.
When you get to 500+ dwarves adding 10 dwarves is going to have the same proportional fps cost as it would at 150 dwarves. That cost won't even be visible to you at 10 fps because it's so small as a proportion to your fps anyway.
I can't fault you for having come to that conclusion about pathing, considering that this is your first fort and the way you've played it. I am curious as to why you're hung up on cache misses as being the culprit, though. Why do you think cache misses are eating such enormous amounts of fps? And why do you think it's large item counts causing them instead of some other factor? You keep saying this, but you aren't showing your work.

Playing Fortress Defense mod, tail end of first year after coming back from retirement. Still no sieges. At war with 2 of the races I think, and the rest are innately hostile like goblins. I feel like I should have been attacked by now, though my civ is dying...

Still sorta learning how to play here.
Will I be attacked by goblins in a serene starting spot?

How do I deal with aquifers?
>>
>>159289514
1) You can. It depends on whether their civ can reach yours, your fortress population and created wealth, but not on the embark site "mood". That only affects wildlife. For a goblin-free easymode embark, find a nice island with no other inhabitants.

2) Short answer, avoid them. Find an embark spot with at least one biome that doesn't have an aquifer. Any mountain works. As long as you can go around the aquifer, it won't be a problem.
There are several ways to dig through them, of course. If the water freezes, you can mine it out and build walls to keep it out when it thaws in the spring. This usually results in frozen miners for me, though. Another way is dropping a solid block of earth on top of the aquifer. The cave-in mechanics are pretty crude and simple, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get a hang of. You can also just build a line of water pumps, and then use them to drain the aquifer so you can build walls, but I've never had the patience for that. If you have a convenient volcano right next to the aquifer, pouring lava on the water will result in solid obsidian you can mine.
Also you can just turn them off in the raws if you want. It's cheating, but you're only cheating yourself.
>>
>>159289514
You can check what races will be interacting with you while looking for an embark spot. Press tab til you see it.

Check the wiki for an aquifer guide.
>>
>>159259004

I made some child graphics for my comfyset. I don't like it, for several reasons:
>the size difference between the adults and children for dwarves, goblins and kobolds is marginal
This, couldn't be helped though, since that's as small as I could make them without losing too much detail. I tried to change some other traits to make them easier to tell apart.

>humans and dwarves look exactly the same
I wanted to have a small beard on the dwarven kiddos, but I wasn't able to draw a satisfying one, so I removed it altogether. It doesn't really matter whether they look the same or not, because they'd probably do so if you saw them IRL, too.

I already know that. I started using MW just recently because FPS reasons and I've been told that's best - also these new buildings and creatures are interesting. I'm just trying to also watch Stargate SG1 on the side so I'd love if less space was wasted. Sadly pressing commands makes the black command menu appear and rearrange the map position.

Masterwork itself doesn't change your FPS. Modest mod, included in Masterwork, is what claims to do that. Just pointing it out because you can have one without the other.
>>
>>159331963
I have one, I'm just watching a video on part of it. I'd like to also watch/use DF without so much space wasted.

IS there any way to use DF commands without the black command bar coming up?
>>
>>159332441
thank you for that, if something ever annoys me in masterwork then I'll be use to just use modest mod.
>>
>>159332441
Masterwork takes all the FPS gain you get from standardized materials and flushes it down the drain by adding even more bloat.

>>

Maybe you did. Winrar was standard practice in the dark era of 1990s. It's been 7zip ever since then.

>>159324124
alright I'll go for it. I'm sure this will work out well.
I'm also domesticating crundles..
>>
>>159333946
I see. I usually just use uniextract to extract archives, and now that I actually created an archive for the first time in years, I just picked winrar because I remembered it being reliable.

What did I lose by using winrar? Did it harm my files?
>>
Imagine if you died in adventurer mode you died in real life. That would be pretty crazy.
>>
>>159334220
.rar is a proprietary format that should be avoided if possible, but it's nothing to lose sleep over. People are used to poor archives and many don't care.
>>
>>159334142
Crundles aren't worth your time. They're pests, and will be clogging up your cage traps in perpetuity. I recommend one training session and then immediate slaughter.
Elk birds definitely are, though. There are few animals that will boost your fort's value as much. Just beware that they're grazers, which makes breeding them somewhat troublesome.
>>
>>159335630
I see. I'll make sure to use 7zip for future updates, but for the time being, I'll let the rar archive stay up.

Noob question:

Attributes <--> Skills, is it right?

If a dwarf uses a skill, does it train attributes associated with it?

If a dwarf has a good attribute in a particular skill, will that skill train fast?
>>
>>159337213
I thought that bug was fixed. I could be wrong. Try dumping them and reclaiming, see if it helps.
>>
>>159337497
Using skills associated with an attribute do train those attributes. Attributes don't affect the spped that skills improve, but are used in skill rolls for appropriate skills. An easy way to see this in play is to assign a legendary military dwarf to some crafting profession. You'll find that, even as a dabbler, they often produce very high quality levels and even the occasional masterwork, because their physical attributes and spatial/kinesthetic sense are so high from their combat training that they make up for a lot of what they lack in skill.
There is an incidental increase in training speed for strong/agile/enduring dwarves just from the fact that they can perform more jobs in a shorter time period and will work for longer without breaks.

>>159344038
Yes, as long as a male can get adjacent to a female. Watch for the grass/fungus to get depleted, though. Elk birds don't graze especially fast, but one can probably wipe a 3x3 after a while.

>>159344474

five episodes in and you still have no military, which is especially bad since you're apparently in untamed wilds - there's a bunch of hostile giant creatures that could come at any time and pick a fight with your dwarves
you NEED to put a few people into the military somewhere in the beginning of the game, which allows them to train their fighting and teaching skills. when they become legendary they will make their students level up at incredibly high speeds when have more dwarves to spare
equipment mismatch means that a dwarf took something another dwarf wanted to equip, which is basically nothing scary
rotten garbage disappears by itself after a while, PLEASE remove those stone/refuse stockpiles, let the stones lie where they are, and remember that there are going to be like hundreds of refuse items outside your kitchen which do no harm so there's no reason to get rid of them
instead make a dump zone one tile wide right next to the entrance and next time you need to get rid of something use k - d to dump it (ps it might take a lot of time because dwarves only dump items when they have absolutely nothing else to do)
also instead of exploratory mining to left and right of a single z-level make a few big down stairs like 10 tiles between each and dig right to the bottom of the map
liaison will always stay at your fortress, that's his job
>>
>>159349301
nah, you don't really need a military till you're about a year in, unless you're on a hostile embark or you haven't dug yourself in and sealed yourself up.
>>
>>159349893
are you one of those people who don't take at least two military dwarves on their embarks and still use bridges like babies

How do you keep track of your stocks of metal and weapons etc. I find some of the industries hard to manage because I can't see what I have or what I need to make.
>>
>>159352273
you need a bookkeeper.

go to the main screen, hit n, and pick one of your more useless dwarves as a bookkeeper. Make sure to adjust the accuracy to highest and assign him a chair/office.

From then on you can press Z to look at your stocks, and hit tab from there to look and find each individual item.
>>
>>159352273
if you have dfhack, press z - 3x right arrow - enter - e - type name, you'll get results like these >>159314158

depends on how fast you accumulate wealth. If you're outpost liason shows up and you got 100k+ worth of stuff, you can expect an ambush by the second year.
>>
>>159352536

>>
>>159353381
make sure not to build your butcher shops and kitchen underground unless you got a roof that leads outdoors.
>>
>>159353730
its not really cheating to use certain utilities, like prospect, dwarf therapist and workflow, they are just things your dorf should be able to do normally.

But yeah, since normally you need a bookkeeper, thats sort of cheating.
>>
>>159354043
I actually never considered dwarftherapist cheating so I'd be ok with this. I'll give it a whirl.
