Guys, I keep changing my mind on fort layout and feel I need to restart. Do you guys end up dividing your forts into 2 or more areas areas, one for close to the surface trading + surface defense, and one down deeper for deep dwarf resting, mining, cooking, etc?

True, still funny.

Also did a bit of science since I remembered dfhack is mostly functional and figured out that there is actually a legendary protector of the weak fame level but I have no idea what you gotta do to hit it normally, I sat there telling this guy about like half a dozen cases of "I slew many foes" and multiple piles of names which were all bandits and the value was at 6 in my history.figures[my id].reputation.wanted[civ I was bragging to].unk2 or some shit, the third entry in the lists.

Setting them to 100 did this.

I'm going to go with Toadys for not fixing the fundamental problems with DF after 10 years. Labor isn't a "oh well its a complicated game" problem. It's a fucking shitshow that is barely usable and should have been the priority 5 years ago.

I think you've convinced yourself that therapist is better than it is. It saves you maybe 20 minutes in a typical 4 hour or so play session.
>>
>>158721512
my military is training away right now but my fort is near a lake so I'm about to try an aquatic danger room to train some swimming
>>
>>158721324
But why would anyone use rapist? dfhack is objectively superior.

It has a labors table just like the rapist does, but it's in-game.

And if you don't want to manage your labors, it can automate them.
>>
>>158721807
rapist has tables which tell you who's the best fit for a job based on their attributes and values
very important for scholars and doctors
>>
>>158721978
Yeah so you obviously don't want to get to know your dorfs, so why don't you just automate that shit with dfhack?

It's objectively the better solution for casual players like you. No autism, no tedium, no micromanaging, no problem.
>>
>>158722080
uhh but you can't automate scholars with dfhack?
I use the ingame labor menus but therapist is good if I ever need something more advanced than changing a few job preferences

have you tried making a fort where you eventually enlist every dwarf into the military
you also have to craft each one of them full masterwork equipment
you could also turn off all announcements, disable pause and make a script that presses a and esc once in a while to turn off liaison messages
then leave the game to run while you sleep
making the preparations is fun
>>
>>158722893
i actually like forts that don't have any military at all
it's fun to build dorven contraptions to deal with threats

like say you get a forgotten beast
you cant simply send your military to kill it and call it a day
so your only option is to over-engineer something dorfy
like a trap chamber where you try to knock it down with caveins if you somehow manage to lure it in
or magma pumpstack with a side reservoir above it to burn everything in that cave layer
then you also have to design a magma drain when half of your cave is full of unwanted red sevens
its fun
>>
I'm planning on making a fort based on the idea that there is a rigid class system. In other words I want to make the majority of dwarves live in slums on the surface while the opulent get their own personal dining halls below. If all goes well the underclass will literally eat the rich.
Any suggestions I could incorporate into this idea?
>>
>>158723384
I don't know, dude, I usually have like 30 military dwarves and 5 non-military ones. I have no idea what to do with too much people around. If I never had any military, I'd just disable migrants entirely and live off of my starting dwarves.
Wouldn't the best idea be making a long hallway with a bridge in it and just retract the bridge when the enemy is on top of it to make him fall onto whatever danger is below?
>>
>>158723659
half the challenge is designing a fort that doesnt lag too much with 300+ dorfs milling around

the other half is figuring out something crazy to do with them
>>
>>158723760
I can't bear when my fps drops below 100. I have max fps set to 300 and everything happens almost instantly when it holds, but 2 years in even with just 40 people around on a very small burrow with no pets I have to endure 100 fps and it hurts.
>>
So I had a troll captured recently, and thought it would be good idea to trade him away to the dwarven caravan since I had no idea what I should use him for. So i selected him to bring up, and shortly after I got a message saying 'urist McChickenEggCollector stopped egg gathering: interrupted by a troll'. Panicking, I went down to see what the damage was turning out to be, and the troll was dead from a non-military dwarf. I thought trolls were supposed to be challenging?
>>
>>158723991
I actually don't mind things going down to like 15-30. It's kind of neat to do things like follow someone around and see what they do with their day, or just watch the tavern.

Once it's sub-10 though, time to retire.
>>
>>158723991
>I can't bear when my fps drops below 100

I really don't understand this sort of mindset; I have my FPS capped at 60 and 30. >>158724402 knows where it's at, though I've yet to experience FPS consistently dropping below a level where I think it's too slow so I don't know if 9 FPS would be trouble or not.
>>
>>158727027
I also have my FPS capped at 50.

100 is way too fast for comfy and I don't like the game getting slower all the time, it ruins your perception of time.

With the symbol and name of your fort lodged
Bonus points for making the name a tyrant motto like '' The chosen ones''
The peasants will be naked full time, and their clothes will be sold
All noble-ys dwarves should be scholars, doctors ore other good professions
Peasants are productors and medium soldiers

The genetics in the game are really basic but if you breed two geese with "fat" genetics the goslings are more likely to be fat as well. There are also dominant and recessive genes that I know exist for hair color but I am not sure this applies to metabolism as well.

W-what is he going to add?!
>>
>>158734404
yeah, It is kinda ok for the moment, but it isn't realistic
Theoretically, I could make an adventurer with some 'x' starting atributes, train it to super-everything, fix his default asexuality with dfhack, retire him at some previously abandoned fort, change to fort mode, burrow him with some preselected chick in a room with a year of supplies, wait some years, and bam
Their baby would be stronger than usual, because the game doesn't differentiate between genetics and atributes
Its the same reason egg-layers receive the tame status of their mother at the time his egg was layed upon
>>
>>158736076
yeah, it's a long way from realistic genetics but it's one of those features most people don't really care about. I would rather have Toady work on other features instead of reworking the genetics system.

Attributes aren't heritable, though. The heritable traits are limited to cosmetic ones (hair color, eye color, nose shape, etc) and height and broadness modifiers. The latter affect how strong a creature is, but it's not the same thing as the strength attribute.

Still, having proper, definable (be it by raws or in-game menus) and interesting mechanics would be very rad, with interbreeding becoming non-rawifable and stuff

>Shit Man's Sky actually one up'd Spore

Truly the largest accomplishment of our time
>>
>>158739743
You do realise that DF will eventually be what Spore could have been, right?

We already have creatures that work in essentially the same way, only without the drag and drop interface. Of course DF's handling of body tissues makes it far superior to Spore's creature system, though.

We also WILL get extraterrestial travel eventually. Fleshing out the scholarly professions will require that Toady adds celestial bodies for Astronomers to study, and the the alternative "planes" of the myth arc will provide a framework for actually loading different maps for different planets.
>>
>>158740157
Never actually played that game.

I guess the biggest disappointment stemmed from how it was the first procedurally genned game aimed at the mainstream public. Since said public wasn't used to proc genned games, they thought that the game would actually have infinite content, which it of course didn't have.

Am I right?

I think he can. I might remember it all wtong, but unless I'm mistaken, he doesn't actually make any promises on the patreon page.

Of course, I don't really expect Toady to abandon his love child arbitrarily. He seems to like making the game even more than I do playing it, which says a lot considering how much I love playing it.

Dude, guy pre-ordered the game that's oficially THE biggest dissapoint in gaming history
Its like telling a holocaust survivour to place his head in the oven to look for a coin, he'll remain skeptic
Jokes apart, Spore was masacrated by EA, and the game has like 40% of the content that was thought. Even with that, the game became a hit in history

No, the only thing that matters is that the tiles the windmills stand on are outdoor. Constructions above them, that is. Also remember that a drawbridge will make the tiles beneath it indoor even when it's raised.

Well what they promised and delivered weren't even rudimentary the same. What was promised as a complex life simulation became a mash-up of several I'd say "game concepts":
The cellular simulation became a pac man minigame. The next stage remembered a MMO-esque grind, where'd have your creature walk around and gather food and battle others.
Then there was a short tribal mode that was basically a Settler rehash. After that a rudimentary RTS clone and then Space mode. Which seemed like the core of it all.
Had some nice features like terraforming, exploration, diplomacy, but all in a very shallow manor. I don't even want to talk about the shitstain that was the Galactic Adventures addon where they offered like half a dozen repeating
mini-quests and expected the community to fill in the rest.

I hated how limited the interaction on the "civilisation" stage in Spore was. You basically had three choices:
>embrace capitalism
>become a religious fundamentalist
>become a fascist

And that was it. It was also painfully obvious that capitalism was intended to be the "lawful good", fundamentalism "lawful evil" and militarism "chaotic evil". Really made us think huh.

Fuck EA.

>welp, I thought it was, what do you know
Let me hedge a little, it's a little grayer than I made it out to be.
There have been a bunch of eugenics/selective breeding experiments documented on bay12 over the years. None of them have ever demonstrated any connection between the parents' attributes and their offsprings'.
However, Toady once gave some comments in an interview indicating that he either believed attributes to be heritable or intended them to be. So it's possible that it's either an intended feature that isn't working, or that it is working and that any bonuses from high-attribute parents is too small to be distinguishable from the random attribute roll at the (admittedly small) sample sizes that have been used so far.
There could be other reasons it hasn't been observed beyond appearance modifiers. It's hard to be certain with such an opaque mechanic.
>>
>>158742705
The game seems to differentiate between the "abstract" genetics of a given population, and the more "specific" genetics that come into play when the units are loaded.

This means that we don't need to breed children to test how the genetics work. We should just be able to visit two different sites in different civs in different parts of the world. For there, we check the attributes of a selection of non-hist figs from each site(I assume this is possible with DFHack). Then we check whether the mean values differ between different populations.

Well, genetics should play a big factor on your atributes, but not only on setting your initial atributes to a certain extent, but they should also determine the cap your abilities should have, which is more signitificative
In the sense that, you need to have a certain affinity to something to be virtually able to get that good in your timeline
(Yeah, caps should be changed to Gain-too-little-exp-to-level-up)

Nah, it wasn't people not being used to it or that it was weird and turned people away once they saw it

It was a steaming pile of dog shit where all advertisements and preview footage was faked, almost every single feature was lied about(everything from basic solar system dynamics being fake skyboxes when they were claimed to be functioning solar systems with the planets actually spinning etc., to fleets in space actually doing anything or existing at all for that matter), the ending that was described as amazing and super worth it was an absolute joke, and the biggest one of all - it was repeatedly said that it was a multiplayer game no matter how unlikely you were to find some one else. Turns out it was a single player game.

I haven't even played it and I know all this shit. That's how big of a fucked up lie that game was.

I had one in 0.40. For some reason, it said "ambush", but the size said siege.

The elves, being armed with wooden weapons and armour, could hardly do anything against my militia. The newly added joint damage might have made them slightly more dangerous. However, some of them rode on grizzly bears, and one of those managed to kill one of my legendaries. Joint damage probably made grizzlies even more dangerous.

My embark is split by a lake. I have a deep tunnel underneath(that also branches into the catacombs), but the silver bridge decorated with platinum statues of the gods isn't finished yet.

I assumed that caravans would arrive from the woodland biome location, not the mountain biome, so I put my Depot over there. Sure enough, the first Caravan arrives and the wagons bypass my inaccessible site. I had nothing real to trade anyway.

Next year arrives, and I've got a Depot on either side of the lake now. Caravan arrives, and I task the dwarves to move all the bolts and ammunition they requested to the Trade Depot. Then... without announcement or noise, the entire Caravan never arrives at the depot(just the diplomat). I scan the map and the unit list, and there's no dead, missing, or other caravan related units. I check reports and there is nothing. I start scanning my dwarf thoughts for SOME sign of what happened.

Again, nothing, until I come across a single report:
"He was horrified after witnessing the loss of a wagon. He was horrified after witnessing the loss of a caravan guard" I've never deconstructed my own wagon, it's still there.

I was disappointed with the loss of the ability to trade. I'm also worried that this will impact future trade options. But then: A vile force of darkness has arrived! It looks like a healthy stack of goblins on my border. I order the squads into action, and wait, eager to see how one of my most successful early militia will perform and perhaps even a chance to test my well stocked hospital.

And then nothing. They never show. Vanished just like the caravan. Some spooky stuff man.

>It's a perfectly flat open path from edge of map to Depot(outside)/Fortress entrance
>Biome is extremely harmless, there are only 7 storks on the map, nothing to scare them/fight etc.
>I'm using no traps or bridges or doors or anything, just walk right in

>>
>>158784106
Some of the caravan may have drowned causing the others to leave, maybe check underwater for corpses. The siege however probably just got bored because they couldnt see anything to kill. I suggest adding roads for your traders and if you want the invaders you can try placing cats in radiating paths from your entrance.
>>
>>158784106
Carefully check area near edges of the map, if caravan was destroyed, then you can find all the loot there.

how highly do you guys customize your stockpiles? I'm reading through the SP guide on the wiki and it's kind of overwhelming. I get that certain shops benefit from each other, but trying to set up my fort to have shops and SPs working in unison, while also keeping things close together is kind of overwhelming. For instance, I usually have a farm/turkey pasture on the level below the surface since that usually has soil. I then have my kitchen next to my main dining/meeting area, which is usually 3-4 levels below that. should I have my loom/clothiers shop on that level as well? And I usually put my first butcher shop on the level, but then the food has to travel 3-4 levels down to the kitchen. How do you guys minimize distance between these shops?
>>
>>158815182
fuck off back to Bay12 or reddit, faggot.
>>
>>158819927
All I do is put workshops near the stockpile that has what they need, but that's pretty inefficient.

If I have workshops that are far away from their main stockpile (magma stuff, usually, until I get pumping going) I'll stick a little 2x3 stockpile next to it and tell them to draw from the main one.

I wouldn't stress about it too much unless you play with a small number of dwarves, you'll have enough useless shits around that hauling shouldn't be a huge problem.
>>
>>158819927
Most of my customization relies on linkages.
The few I manually tool are Food and Bar/Blocks, for divvying seeds, drinks, oils, general ingredients, and meals into their respective locations, as well as making sure input ores, fuel, and output ingots and output blocks all go to their proper places.

>fuck with pathing
everything will fuck with pathing eventually, but that one is going to be especially bad because:

> 3x3 up/down stair
> dwarves trying to get to the corner workshops
> stockpile refilling items going in will choke on the single tile doorways
> items going out will choke up even more on those single tile doors
> dwarves with moods that fail will require more blocks to close in
>>
>>158817825
>it was simply called tfw/feels guy
how new are you?
>>
>>158819927
I almost never build stockpiles. Workshops store lots of items before they get cluttered, and effectively contain everything in a neat 3x3 multi-purpose space without need for bins or other extra containers. Since I'm not building anything to simply store it in a stockpile, everything I make all gets placed as furniture, worn, or output to another workshop or the trade depot. The only times I use stockpiles are simple.

>1. Food stockpiles
>2. Minecart transportation long distances, mostly with stone
>3. Noble McUrist just put a ban on exporting <useless but highly requested figurines> that are piled mountain high on the trade depot and I've got to remember to not trade them away

Even with this simplification, arrangement of the fortress for hyper efficiency is a very hard problem. Just give up on it. Build the fortress organically.

They used to be srs bsns back in 34.11 when bows and crossbows were essentially railguns and a wooden arrow could punch straight through steel plate. At the moment the easiest way to deal with them is to just sit behind fortifications and pepper them with bolts, because steel-clad crossbowmen are immune to silly wooden arrows. But yeah, bears are still no joke.

>>
bros, I gambled and lost my latest fort.

Things were going well, I had a complete mini fort going on in the massive three layer space I prepared for my entrance hall to my actual fortress.

I dug through 2 cavern layers in search of metal ore. I assumed my lack of wealth would not wake a forgotten beast so soon.

But no, there it was, a giant crawling spider-like creature made of fucking cryolite.

All I had were ten rookie marksdwafs with wooden bolts. Also only metal bolts were set to Combat, so they were doomed from the start as I had no metal bolts...

1 nano second after unpausing after the Forgotten Beast announcement, the whole fortress was covered in webs. Like a lot of fucking webs, this thing was serious. Within seconds it killed 50 out of my 60+ dwarfs.

On it's way up to the surface it even fought with a Giant Cave Spider, which put up a good fight, but was ultimately killed :(

In the end, only 6 Dwarfs remained. 5 in the hospital, unnoticed by the beast, and one child playing in the food stockpile, whist the beast was destroying furniture in the dining hall next to it.

I watched and waited for the child to leave the stockpile, become webbed and killed in an instant.
>>
>>158845573

So, I was reading meta-jokes about DF, and I came across one Idea
What If you could export, like you do with maps and info, certain units from the game (people, animals, monsters, etc.) And be able to place them in any save you'd want, and/or trade them to other people
It sounds pretty amazing as it is, but think big.
Once we have more proper relationships between people, we could make certain long-lasting enemies inmortal, and let them fight and dominate entire worlds one after another, for all eternity.
Imagine all the experiences that they would have
Imagine If AI aumented with time
>>
>>158847551
Ok, fairly asking
Up to what level of lewdness could I mod this game at?
yeah, you can add vagoos, and you can add dicks, and make them have different sizes and such. But does it end there?
Really, Im curious how much you can do with the game on that sense
>>
>>158848570
I just pretend but you could probably make a vag/butthol and make it grabbable and then make a dick bodypart and give it the ability to grasp. Its what Obok Meatgod did.
>>
>>158848570
you could make a tentacle monster with 10 dicks if you wanted. the body part system lets you do anything you want
>>
>>158848984
>>158849443
Of course, I can add body parts and modifiers to make the game focus on lewd stuff
With the upcoming myth update you'll be able to put your hands on gods and stuff, so you could make a world that centers about a sexual religion caused by ''The pilar of life'', a portal to a world of constant and everlasting sex
But, can I actually mod behaviours or stuff in the game?
Do you ever feel the creature creation system, although amazing, could use to become more sophisticated?
>>
Should I make an entirely separate squad for marksdwarves, or just mix them in with the rest?
>>
>>158839508
I do everything work-related through the manager screen. I set up a lot of automatic checks for brainless repeat stuff, like
Do I have ore? SMELT IT INTO BARS
Do I have fuel? Make more! / Stop making more we have plenty.
Make clothes (before I'm playing naked fort)! But don't waste cloth on clothes if I'm super short on empty bags, do that instead!

The only thing you can really use it for is if you are running low on materials and you don't want to use them up.

I've always thought that there are some wacky stuff happening with the more precise things, like skin or hair, that could use some bettering

But yeah, when you design a big enough creature, like a giant, it would make sense that if a body part is several tiles big, you could define each tile of the body part, like placing the heart in a certain part of the chest, or making a certain tile ''The Heart''
It represents the realism and accuracy that gets sacrificed in smaller creatures

My initial mini fort is set up nicely, currently 56 dwarfs.

I had my first Were Beast attack (this usually kills my fortress)

This time I got lucky, I managed to setup a civilian alert real quick and sent my rookie crossbow dwarfs out. After a bit of a struggle, one dwarf had been killed, one injured but they killed the Wereskunk.

I read through the reports, and it appeared the only dwarf who got bitten was the one who killed the beast, unfortunately I had to quarantine him. I can't bring myself to kill him.

May put him in a bit, where once a month I let him loose on some goblin prisoners.

Can someone PLEASE help me with my embark setup dwarves? This is the hardest part for me in any game, I always get stuck in character creation for hours.

Basically I want
A leader type guy (I guess Appraiser/Record Keeper/Organiser/Judge of Intent - not sure how to balance these things - not sure if I should give him another job to do while he's not busy being the boss)

A carpenter (probably going to be consistently busy, not sure if I should give him a backup skill to do in his downtime but he probably won't have much downtime. not sure who to put the woodcutting skill on)

2 Masons (I want to build a stone wall, I figure I'll need at least 2 masons making blocks, probably more once I get migrants)

A foodguy (grower/cook or grower/brewer but I don't want him to get stuck in a loop in the kitchen making meals and neglecting crops, not sure how to handle this)

And with 2 dedicated miners that makes seven dwarves, with me still missing all kinds of smithing and crafting, wood burning and furnace operating, someone to train my dogs, I probably need another foodguy, a mechanic and heaps of other shit. Please help me. If I can figure out how to play dominions 4, I can figure out this game, I just get so stuck at this kind of character creation (I take hours to design a pretender in dom4). I've started about 5 or 6 forts and deleted them all because I've forgotten something or I've found myself hating something. I can feel I'm so close. I was _almost_ happy with how my last fort was going, I know this one will be good.
>>
>>158904583
My usual setup is 2 miners one is trained in engraving the other social, mason/mechanic, carpenter/wood cutter/axe dwarf, farmer/cook/brewer, weapon/armorsmith, the final one changes with whatever theme I go with for that fort.

First of all, taking an appraiser wastes points. The first time a dwarf trades they gain enough appraisal to see the value of items, which is literally all the appraisal you need for your broker. Higher levels make no difference. Taking a "leader" dwarf isn't very useful in general. You can't give them enough skill to exceed the social skills that many of your migrants will have. If you really need your bookkeeping and manager orders to be done marginally faster then the measly few levels you can buy in record keeping and organization might help a little, but you stand a fair chance of getting migrants that will outperform your starter in those fields too.

The only things that carpenters make that other professions can't are beds. Starting with a carpenter is fine, but give them another job. It can be woodcutting, but that's not optimal (and you shouldn't spend points on it even if you go with it).

Unless you're planning the great wall of china, 2 dwarves making blocks full time will be terribly excessive.

You correctly guessed the problem with your food dwarf. Concentrating your industries in a single dwarf creates bottlenecks, so don't put farming/brewing/cooking on the same dwarf. Apply this principle to every industry.

Many jobs whose output isn't skill dependent aren't worth putting points into at embark. That means furnace operating, wood burning, brewing, etc. You can turn those on literally any dwarf after embark. Also any unskilled dwarf can train your dogs, it will take literally seconds.
My usual starters:
Miner/engraver
Miner/mason
Mason/mechanic
Weaponsmith/farmer
Armorer/architect
Military
Military

I'll usually let one of my military dwarves cut wood and smooth stone and one gather plants and cook until their kit is ready.
>>
>>158909593
After embark I turn detailing on for my other miner and the mason/mechanic, and turn mining on for the latter as well. If you don't dig big you won't need to do that. This is usually the only place I'll put same-industry labors on dwarves, as I smooth/dig simultaneously build mason and mechanic shops at my dig sites as needed. This also helps to ensure you better moods; stone detailers make trinkets in strange moods, while miners make furniture. Since mining will level faster than any of those skills it ensures a better result for your starting 7 if they mood.
My military dwarves will perform odd jobs until their kit is ready. Wood cutting, brewing, butchering, tanning, shearing, etc. Whichever one doesn't tan will make beds or crossbows or smooth stone a little to give them a nonshitty moodable skill. They usually start training as soon as the first migrants arrive.
For the rest, I make sure that they only have one moodable skill. The two metalworkers can smelt their own ore until some fisherdwarves come along to do it for them.
Remember, you'll get 3 migrant waves the first year, so your starting 7 don't have to do everything. You can even further specialize them once you have more dwarves.

>>
>>158904583
embark with 0 skills
only exceptions are when you need discipline if you expect evil/savage environment or need military skills right away.
spend the points on more picks, fuel, stuff for steel, etc.

second, you need to build a fortress organically. Locking up individual dwarves on a single overdone task can lead to other problems down the line. This is also true for projects, such as "build a stone wall". If you aren't prepared to do something (and only on a small scale) right out of the embark screen, you should anticipate doing it much later in a more natural progression when you have the extra labor to do such a thing.

Have anyone else noticed that ALL dwarves in a well-fed fort eventually become obese? They can be skinny when they get there, but all those cooked meals always manage to fuck their shit up.

In the end, the only non-obese dorfs are the militia ones.
>>
>>158850109
The second line bothers me more than the first; I guess it's because the first is possible (various societies have had various attitudes over the millennia) but the second is an obvious oversight. Surely Toady will get to it eventually, but I would have expected eventually to have happened years ago, at least in some sort of placeholder form.

One possible advantage is that if they train shield/dodging/fighting they'll have an easier time avoiding getting shot if the enemy has archers. I've got my marksdwarves assigned to a barracks right now for that purpose, after they all got perforated in the previous siege. I don't know if it'll work or not.

The skills of the broker or whoever you've got doing the trading matter a surprisingly large amount. In my (fairly limited) experience the mood of the merchant matters mainly in how much of your bullshit he's willing to put up with, not so much what does and does not count as bullshit. Also, judge of intent skill seems to determine how precise/accurate the "willing to trade/pleased/losing patience" report is.

It does. I also suspect that merely killing a character does this. My pleb kills always show up in the "notable kills".

My military dwarves always end up obese too. That's fine, though, since the fat fucks have more force behind their strikes and more tissue to carve through before important parts start getting damaged.

There are (almost) no chances of catching a disease - at all.

Okay, gangrene is a hazard, and eating stale food, and drinking out of stagnant ponds.

>>
>>158924053
How do they get fat?
I have a very not-fat fort, they're eating mostly fish and berry stew
>>
>>158925136
When they don't do much. Sedentary dwarven lifestyle leads to fat dorf.

Some of them will just always be fat bastards, though. Fat actually is helpful for reducing damage from weapons iirc
>>
>>158925841
Being sedentary doesn't make much difference if food is readily available. I run Idlers:0 pretty much all the time and everyone gets fat anyway. Dwarves get hungry often enough that they can't work enough between meals to burn all the excess.
>>
>>158925841
It also gives them a larger volume, which is important in combat, especially after the addition of joint damage.

Evening friends. I have been poking my head in and out of this general for months now. I finally worked up the courage to make a first episode of a slow rolling and deliberate series on Dwarf Fortress.

Idea is to sort of take it slow and analyze the combat scenarios while still being decently new enough to the game to make mistakes. I am seasoned enough however to not make it painful to watch.

Is any body interested in a link? It is pretty much me just being a fucking nerd.

Guys, a question if i may:
Is it enough to just create robe+trouser+socks for teh little buggers?
Wiki says thats all i need to avoid clothing bad thoughts, but they still wear their hats+gloves and the likes from embark and that will eventually rot off (i assume) so bad thoughts there, but even once the are ff, most likely they will grab shit off goblins (on top of the 3 types im creating for them) that will keep geting them bad moods. So in the end, i'll just have to make everything.

The second qeustion is: how much do iron armor slows them down?
I'm swimming in iron so my though was bypassing the clothing issue by armoring everyone, but the wiki says it will slow them down. what it didnt say is how much. 20-30% i would be fine with, but if its 50% i wouldnt bother. also an other side effect for it (like pain in hte ass civial alerts, mass suicide near rivers....)

Thanks in advance.

On full iron equipment, with no armor ability, dwarves will be slow, like half slow
Bad thing about armor ability is that not only does it slow your moving from one tile to another, but it reduces your atack rolls, as you are slower to atack, and thats not well measured
Generally speaking, set your dwarves to train and spar to train armor ability, its neede

I'll keep dropping my material as I go on. I'm not sure how I will go about presenting the stories. That is if I write them, or ramble and orate.

I have to go though, I work in 5 hours. Have fun loosers, thanks again for your time.

Really m8, consider making interactive tell tales.

Basically you create a world set in a future update of the game, with uknown features, and start telling a story about whatever you want, You then make other anons participate in it, be it by decision making (you can choose how) on the course of the story, or by making someone else continue the story
The cool part is that with each post, you start revealing the mechanics of this new features, which is fun

A good storyteller doing this can be awesome and very inspirating to other suggestionfags, and the experience is very very different if the teller is good

temples in particular seem to grant massive mood bonuses. The whole distracted dwarf thing.

also rp purposes. And the differences between setting a dwarf to pump out 1000s of mica cabinets until he produces masterwork cabinets so I can stuff them into the dwarves pathetic little 2x1 living cells and make them happy thoughts and assigning a dwarf to perform in a tavern to entertain dwarfs for happy thoughts is that one costs 1000 mica rocks before results and the other doesn't.

libraries can make copies of books and let dwarves write books.

One important question: I've heard that even constructed floors will eventually become soil if they become covered in mud. Is this true?

Basically, I want to build Tenochtitlan, and I figured the best way to go about would be to just build the "ground" out of wood, and then muddy it to eventually turn it into soil. Would this work?

yes, no
you can muddy constructed tiles with water flow, you can not turn any kind of constructed tiles into soil.

Why arent my guys planting more seeds?
no matter the season/crop/avaliabale farmers/time remaining, they alawys only plant 1/5 of the field then idle away.
th plot has a single "light" spot hence all the plants in the list, it is in a single biome, teh seeds are stored in bags, in a no-barrel stockpile so they are avaliable,

it isnt fertelized, but that should only affect the maturing time of the plant.

After a while if you've been cutting above ground trees and you're in contact with an elven civ, they'll eventually send a diplomat to tell you to "Stop cutting all the trees, man" This happens even if your civs are at war.

I see you're 1z below the surface and have been cutting trees. You'll find that there are holes in the surface where the tree trunks met the ground, lighting your farm plots and making them unsuitable for planting subterranean crops. Next time go deeper. And for the love of Armok, make smaller farm plots. Much much smaller. Those farms are absurdly excessive.

They're only using part of the plot because part of the plot is lit. That's what's stopping them. There isn't some esoteric mechanic governing planting that you need to be afraid of. If you don't fuck your plots up or run out of seeds your planters will work them.

Meph integrated the fortress defense races into his mod and forgot to remove/added for some reason an "fd" (for Fortress Defense) at the end of their names for some reason. I just ignore it. The races you mentioned are a species of sentient wolf and tiger men, respectively. I personally like to imagine the wolfmen having a viking-esque culture and the tigermen resembling the Persian empire.

This is kind of a segway but I think its neat how DF only gives us the barest descriptions of armor. This basically means that each civilization can be imagined to have its own style and military uniform even if they use the same "type" of armor. I mean I'm sure you've all already realized this but I still think its neat.

So for some reason Black Dragons in masterwork can breed with mortals to produce more of their kind. There's currently a brood of eight of them lurking in an abandoned fortress.

I know this is probably unintentional but I find the concept interesting. Like a nightcreature on steroids.

In masterwork they can, apparently.

Behold; Umi Crushsizzle, the foul beast who laid with a wolfman and birthed a generation of black dragons upon the world.

If they continue to grow like this, they may well be the greatest threat to civilization as time goes on and their numbers swell.

I understand that elf merchants consider anything with an image of a tree on it to be worth extra, but do dwarves consider them worth less than normal? Third time's the charm!

Man, Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode has me savescumming for the first time ever.

Still, important lessons are learned:
Followers are actually useful when storming a dungeon with full dozen criminals in the middle of a town.
If enemy surrenders - leave them alone. They can always be dealt with later when all their buddies are dead.
Take time to rest once your enemy is crippled & bleeding - exhaustion is the biggest danger in a prolonged fight with lots of enemies.

Alright, so, i got the highly bugged LNP pack for linux but it's for DF 34.xx .
But i wanna play 43.05 as it's the latest, but, we don't have no dwarf manager or therapist for that on linux.

So, what do i do?
Also, no graphics, but ASCII is fine until it starts messing with my eyes when i sit for 2 hours continuous.

Also, LNP for that version gives me tilesets, which is good. But apparently therapist bugs there sometimes too.(never really proved it working)

So, any suggesions?

ALso, if you can't give me some help, anybody who has been successful in managing 60+ dwarves without any graphics or rapist like stuff?
Thanks
>>
>>159025027
>So, any suggesions?
Well, play 43.05 without rapsist/dfhack, obviously!
You don't need the LNP for anything, you can do all these things without it.

>ASCII [...] starts messing with my eyes when i sit for 2 hours continuous.
It's mostly the default colors and black space that fucks your eyes. Try out a nicer color scheme. In either case, tilesets, creature graphics and color schemes can all be changed individually and independently, all without the LNP.

If you're not a sucker for maximizing efficiency, you don't need to waste much time with assigning labors.
Feel like you don't have enough woodcutters? Get some random idlers and assign them as woodcutters. Done. They'll learn fast enough.
It's not important to always have 0% idlers. In fact, even if you're going for high efficiency, you'll want a pool of idlers at all times to stay flexible and react to things.

Question for all of you because I can't find any kind of objective answer:
You start with 7 dwarves. How many farm plots do you create? How big are they?

If you want trees you can dig out a orchard 3-5 z levels deep, flood it with water, breach the caverns, and grow tower caps and fungiwood like a proper dorf.

And if you want your namby pamby wine coolers you can channel your roof and build floors over your farm plots.
>>
can building destroyers destroy bridges, walls, floors, grates and hatch covers now?

I know that before there was a limit on what they could break.
>>
>>159038158
No.

So, a tile in DF has two parts: a floor and a wall.
A surface tile, for example, has a floor of grass and a wall of air. When you mine a tile in the ground, you're removing just the wall, leaving the floor for dorfs to walk on.

Ramps are what you're thinking of, I think. Yes, when you channel a small area, DF makes ramps. This happens because there are complete tiles around the channeled area. If you channel a 3x3 area, the outer tiles will have ramps, but the inner one won't.
I hope that helps.

Don't think of tiles as top-down. Think of them as bottom-up. The surface tile in my example isn't correct. It's a wall of air and a floor of air. The next layer is a wall of soil and a floor of vegetation.

Oh, okay.
What's an optimal pop/strict pop cap? on average
I remember losing a fort a while ago due to fps death, and I could've kept going easily
>>
>>159045912
I wouldn't bother with more than 100-120 dwarves. A lot of it depends on what you do, the more crap the game has to keep track of the slower it goes.

Quick question:

Is there anything actually valuable in the Tombs/Towers or am I questing there (Adventure Mode) just for the mummies?
>>

>>
... which gives you the ability to raise a lot of spoopy skellingtons who die the first time they get maced.

Wow ... so interesting ... NOT!

Anything else, or should I regard them just as stamina & precision trainers?
(You know: run in, bash a couple of heads, run out, rinse & repeat when not tired anymore. )
>>
>>159052132

Too bad you can't raise the mummy too. Can a necromancer resurrect a dead mummy?
>>
>>159054946

Speaking of, has anyone ever played a water-breathing or swimming necromancer and started an army of zombie/skeleton whales?

What was the sort-of fix to Workflow that didn't cause it to crash after adding a bunch of restraints?

Also, in the dfhack.init where would I insert enabling Workflow from launch?

So it turns out this town is basically run by a sprawling criminal organization. Every adventurer I made that went through there was harassed personally if not outright murdered and plenty of other people were attacked as well. But recently, two separate nations launched attacks on the town, completely destroying it. This must be what it felt like to watch Sodom and Gomorrah go up in smoke.

Be warned that goblin snatchers carry children in bags, somehow. I'm not sure if you can tell whether or not their bag contains a child, since it's been a looooong time since I last saw it happen.
