That is also an option, 'the grid' is just a name for all the wires around the station, so you are basically just wiring the solar loop to the station loop.

There are SMESes that have a bit of charge at the beginning of the round, but after a while they'll be empty so you need to get power up and running.

Each solar is connected to a SMES, that is connected to the grid (the general power grid that powers all the APCs in the station). You do this by extending the electric cable directly from the solar lines to the grid, bypassing the SMES. It's just a couple tiles away.

Check the solars control panel, at some point it'll grow from 0W to a nice rounded number. Set the SMES to something below that. 1-5kW less or something. Should be 85kW (from 90kW) if I recall correctly, but check it up.

You know that cable that turns into a white plastic thing with three cables into the SMES? That's the input. Connect that cable to the output (cable coming from undet the SMES) instead. Pretty sure it's also called "hotwiring". Hotwiring the solars or AME is usually "safe" (that'd get you 260kW max, theoretically, but ~180kW in practice) for people attempting to manipulate the grid without protection/insulated gloves; hotwiring the singularity, SME or TEG is dangerous (we're talking megawatts here) and will get people to medbay if not outright kill them.

APCs, which start out fully charged. Follow the cables to those green/blue/red screens, click on them for a menu. They have ann internal battery that gets charged from the power on the grid through the input, if there's no power on the grid and the APC ran out, you can unlock them, pry them open and replace the battery.

The SMES on engineering start with some power, too; enough for you to set up the AME and head off to fancier engines.

Alright, here's a helpful hint:
/vg/ wiki generally has a lot of information missing (not just on toxins)
BUT
you can use other server's wikis (bay, goon, or tg) to scrape together your knowledge. You kinda need to figure out what's irrelevant due to code differences but most of it is the same (maybe just with a different name, like meds). That's how I started learning toxins.

What if Xenobotany, Genetics and Xenobio all worked like Cult, where you have to research words and certain combinations of words did shit
Here's the crazy part: The words are the same for all three departments
So if a Xenobotanist finds a word he can share it with the Geneticist and they do research faster that way
Thus when there's 3 people really good at research they can form the RESEARCH DREAM TEAM and you can tell it will be a good day for science.
