It's left up to interpretation whether this storyline also happened in the old universe since it takes place befire Robotnik would have taken over.

However, the fact that he's "Eggman" here would support the idea that he's the same guy they're fighting now, and not a new one that was originally a robo-Robotnik.

From my understanding the only things that happened differently were the exclusion of Penders-related characters and their plot arcs.

Robotropolis is SAT-AM territory, just like Shively and most of the freedom fighters. They're all fair game.

Yes, they are, but I think they're avoiding that just to keep things simple.

My assumption is that all the stuff that happens in old universe issues 1-50 is replaced in new universe by what happens in these genesis comics, which closely follows the game.

This makes sense because new universe follows the games very closely.

What this means for Robotnik is that in new universe he's always been Eggman, and that he was the only one. He didn't die and get replaced by robo-Robotnik who became Eggman.

It makes the lore more simple to follow.

Buy yeah, the whole Robotropolis thing? That didn't happen in the new uni. It's safe to assume that all the filler shit that happens between when they initially defeat Robotnik and when the countdown to chaos arc starts is also gone, which would make sense because the characters in the new universe are 3 years younger than they were in the old one (sonic was almost 19).

Three reasons:
1) The failure of the Saturn, relative hiatus of Sonic during the Saturn, and need to sell as many Dreamcasts as possible led them to shove as much shit as possible into Sonic Adventure in order to appeal to as many people as possible and sell as many Dreamcasts as possible.

2) Financial rockiness and gradual scaling back of development teams after the Dreamcast died meant they were less interested in doing spin-offs unless the profitability was as slam-dunk as possible. Shadow got one because he's the second most popular character in the canon, but they weren't going to throw them out to other characters because they would've hit diminishing returns in terms of profit margins.

3) After the critical reactions that Heroes, Shadow and 06 got, they decided to dumb "Sonic's shitty friends" and scale the cast back to the Genesis-era originals, plus a couple hencebots for Eggman and one character-of-the-game.

Because I am being a little facetious with my comment, the only serious point being made is that in the eyes of the general public things like that do sound like desperate marketing gimmicks.

In fact, 'Franchise goes into space' and 'Franchise goes back or forward in time' are usually considered moments when the writers are running out of ideas (c.f. Jason X or the canned 'Escape from Earth', the sequel to 'Escape from LA'). Ironically of course those two games I'm referencing turned out to be rather good.

Because of what who and what Shadow is, I believe that having a simple origin of "just being another hedgehog" doesn't make sense. I mean, the vibe that I get from Shadow is the end result of a secret government project to basically create what Sonic is and use it for their own means, as a weapon or a cure or whatever. Shadow's backstory is perfect the way it is, because of the fact that he is literally a Dark-Sonic + artifical Sonic 'clone' under the control of the military. Just being another hedgehog would completely change a ton of things about Shadow even if his personality and powers remained somewhat unchanged.

But is Shadow really meant to be that, though? I mean, sure, he's sort of written that way now, to a certain extent, but that shouldn't really be who he is, because it WASN'T who he was when he first appeared, and afterwards. That's part of an alternate future first started by Penders (who considered it the one true futuer), where reality starts to break apart from some of Sonic's actions. Sonic ends up saving it but consequentially rewrites most of the timeline, causing Shadow to become a cruel tyrant of the world. The biggest difference between Sonic and Shadow is the mission thing. That is literally it. If Sonic was darker and always focused on "THE MISSION", he'd be just like Shadow. But, Sonic isn't always focused on missions. He's only "focused" on the Adventure, and having fun, and doing what he feels is right. Shadow cares only about the current objective with a single-minded determination. When Shadow has a mission, it becomes all he cares about, all he thinks about, the only thing driving him to act at all. It's because of this that Shadow is Chaos CONTROL rather than just Chaos. He's a form of pure Chaos that has been manipulated and controlled to do specfic things, instead of just being free to do whatever it wants. Thus, Shadow appears far more serious than Sonic has ever been, despite having the same personality deep down.

Essentially, Shadow is a version of Sonic who has been raised and manipulated into living like Knuckles.

My favorite part of that arc was all the people reacting like a bunch of babies to it when all it did was present the logical result to how the Dark Ages had been written. Props to Pellerito for having it last only two issues because the way it was written ended up being perfect in terms of resolving a lot of Dark Ages stupidity without simply sweeping it under the rug.

This is correct when you assume the characters in the comics are portrayed more-or-less similarly to how they are in the games, which is the attitude most people have when reading the comics. But it's not correct when you consider that Sonic had been consistently portrayed as a self-centered ass who, while meaning well, has definite ego problems, and that Tails' parents had been back on the planet for all of maybe a week at best after years of being not in Tails' life.

Like the anon said above, this and other stories from around that time tried to naturally bridge the gap between their Dark Ages personalities and their game personalities in a way that felt like genuine character development instead of just pretending it all never happened. Sonic apologizes literally the next issue and realizes he was a jerk.
