In this case it should be black-and-white: either add new everything or don't add anything. This is for the reason I gave, which is that Sonic and the other animals would eventually become less and less special as the animal cast was crowded out while Eggman became more and more special (and more stagnant and boring) by comparison. This conversation chain is in response to people who replace humans with animals and the statement that doing so should appeal to classicfags, which is false and logically suspect.

3D movement in general and an expanded control scheme are big improvements to the Sonic formula, regardless of how well they've been implemented. Higher fidelity graphics have given us some gorgeous landscapes to romp around in for the boost trilogy, and CD-quality audio has given unlimited possibilities when it comes to great music. Incorporation of parkour elements can greatly improve the classic mentality of continually-flowing movement across obstacle courses.
Absolutely the 3D games have been flawed in their execution, even the good ones, but that doesn't mean they haven't added anything that can't be improved upon in future installments.

When the franchise isn't hampered by needing to be a cash cow to bail its owners out from self-induced financial retardation, or helmed by an idiot who has no idea what made the games popular to begin with. Those two issues have encompassed Sonic's entire modern run save for maybe Unleashed, if even that.

Or how about just having it be Sonic vs Eggman with no dialogue or cutscenes? Just play it really safe for a while if they want to continue going 3D. That's what Sonic needs to do: take things back to their roots, play it safe, and then gradually work it back up to things like a story and other characters. OR Stick to 2D for now with Mania and such, and try 3D again in a few years

Because every modern game worth a game, even colorful "rated E for Everyone" platformers have a story these days, or they're niche titles that are lucky to sell a hundred thousand copies. Mania will be an exception, and it will be well-deserved, but unless Sonic Team follows up with solid 3D games with at least decent stories then subsequent Mania-esque games will sell progressively less until nobody cares anymore.

I think it's usually a small event, but I know it offers a lot of opportunities to sit and chat with the creators. I know that ABT is going to the event for that exact reason. It's not huge but it's a good way to get friendly.

There are only 2 that immediately came to mind.
For starters, Game-Amy. She serves no purpose other than being the token girl and an annoying kid with an incredibly unhealthy crush towards Sonic, who clearly doesn't feel the same way. Any attempt to expand her character beyond being a Sonic fangirl have never stuck because Sonic Team is too inept to write a character, let alone a decent story. Her game play in the games has always kind of been clunky as well, with the exception of the Advance games.(And even, she was always my last pick.)
The other one is Cream and Cheese in general. As cute as they are, they dont really serve much of a purpose beyond being the young cute nice kids and being Amy's Tails. They just kinda do whatever Amy does. Gameplay wise, at least for Advance 2, they were the easy mode of the game, and were admittedly fun to play. There's just something amusing about a cute 6 year old and her pet friend obliterating an army of robots with ease.
But even so, Cream's still just a nice kid, and Amy is just an obsessed stalker, and that's all they have going for them (unless you count being cute as something), and ultimately serve no purpose whatsoever.

Basically, the black arms are the exact same as they were in the games. Then the guys on the second comet came in order to get revenge on Earth for wiping out most of their species, and to repopulate. There was this Dark Arm called Eclipse who was, in concept, what Shadow would have been if he was 100% Dark Arms. Sonic Lost World; Amy is hanging out with knuckles and the animals for the most part. Not really chasing sonic in any capacity but does keep him updated.
And really, in the last 5 years those were her last two major roles. Beyond a few cameos in generations she hasn't really had much to do because nobody but sonic and tails really matter anymore.

It is true that they toned her down in those games, but then the problem becomes her not doing anything. I know that Knuckles didn't have any reason to be there, and you could argue that Amy keeping Sonic updated was important, but at the same time Tails could have done that, too. And story wise, Amy doesn't really have much of an impact beyond that one cut-scene where she didn't recognize Sonic.

But for the sake of it, my idea of where I want Amy to go is having her become more mature and level-headed and become in her own right and aspiring to be like and surpass her own hero, Sonic, in her own way. As for her crush on Sonic, I'm cool with it either fading away, or them getting together eventually. And that is a damn shame. I liked all the different characters (even Amy), because it made it feel like Sonic had come across all sorts of people during his many journeys, and made tons of friends. In Adventure 2 she's mostly just helping out just like everyone else.
Heroes she's absolutely trying to find him.
In 06 she thinks Silver is him but for the most part she seems to only be looking for sonic because she feels like he'd help in the search for this "iblis trigger" guy.
Unleashed she does seem to be happy to find him but it doesn't really mean she's chasing him. Especially considering she found the werehog.
Lost world she seems more concerned with the animals.
It's really hard see how much she's "stalking" him since every game is kinda based around Sonic but it seems like her chasing him around is mostly used for humor rather than taken seriously. I mean she and Sonic seem to be on pretty good terms most of the time.

They already had a ton of character development that we never got to see. Bunnie most likely already went through all sorts of angst in the past, but we aren't seeing it because she already got over it. Same with Antoine and his cowardice, and so on with the others.

Preboot Bunnie had the whole Uncle Beauregard thing going along whilst she was acting as a spy in something that indirectly tied in or eventually would tie with Matilda.
She also had the whole Robot bully thing going on, however it's effects aren't really shown since the first issues were more silly then serious. She wanted to be Sally's hairdresser.

She had it off panel and didn't get to develop. It was brushed aside so they could have her just be there for whatever. It's not satisfying or engaging.
