For the standards of a full videogame, Stardew Valley was always very shortcoming. But if you consider that it's made by just one guy alone it's pretty impressive. I mean, the game is easily moddable already. If we got an official modding tool, it would be even easier and it would help more people get into the game.

We could get dlc-sized mods with entire new questlines, places, npcs and stuff, maybe even overhauls.

The only thing that'd stop this game from growing bigger is the probably the fact that this is an indie game, so way less people know about it, and way less modding-oriented people are drawn to it.

The popularity isn't that significant for a big modding scene to establish. Look at Rimworld, which is also sort of a one-man project currently still in alpha phase. He added sort-of modding support very early already and there's enough mods already to triple the content of the game. Considering it got exposure to chucklefuck's forum all the starbound modders are able to see it, if there's word for a modding toolkit i'm sure a lot will jump on the Stardew train as well.

Ellen, the elderly lady, dies somewhen in year 2, which has an impact on Ellie, her granddaughter and bachelorette.
These games have a lot more nuances with their villagers and a lot of interactions has an impact on how the game progresses. It's not a linear progression bar with each villager, it's a dense tree with lots of branches for events.

So the secret to getting iridium drops is letting them eat grass outside? Because I have so much animals, I can never actually keep up with the grass for them, and I never got any iridium quality items in spring through fall. But since you CAN'T have them eat grass in winter, I assume the game compensates for that and gives you the drops anyways - maybe because of the radiator in the barn/coop?

They have a different atmosphere and different feel (especially RF, because it's more of an RPG than a farming game), and they certainly have a few features that I'd love to see in SDV (like rival marriages, a better combat system, the possibility of taking other NPCs in dungeons with you, age progression).

SDV has its own charm though. Being western and indie, it can have a more mature feel, with darker implications.
And with the added possibility of modding, it might become even better than any HM or RF game, especially if CA releases an official modding tool.

Also DS one has more events with the villagers and festivals. It depends. Back to Nature is probably one of, if not THE high point in the HM series. Though (More) Friends of Mineral Town is basically a remake of that, some people claim they improved some things and worsened others. The "More" version is basically the version for female player characters.
If you wanted to start i'd probably suggest playing the SNES game first since it probably plays closest to Stardew Valley sans combat and crafting, though that one is quite harsh with the time management, moreso than SDV.
Harvest Moon 2 for the Gameboy Color is also something you could look into, since it has some features that had real trouble returning, such as playing as a girl and having a farming partner NPC.
Harvest Moon DS (and the Cute version to play as female) followed the FoMT route for the most part and should be similarly enjoyable (protip: you can go the homoroute, it's just the translation saying "best friends" but gamemechanically you're married and even can have a baby).
Personally i found Island of Happiness rather good as well, since the game's premise was all about actually developing the newfound village into a flourishing city, though they did start slacking on this game, lacking gay dating and the touchpad controls can be iffy.
A Wonderful Life i would personally not recommend to really play. While the 3D works well and it generally has a nice atmosphere, it's the most slowpaced of the games in my opinion and they made animal husbandry a bit "too realistic" and complicated, for example cows need to be pregnant to produce milk etc. It arguably marked the dying of the series, since the original developers for the HM games left the studio for the most part at that point.
Animal Parade is trash and so is Tale of Two Towns, i haven't really touched any HM game since then.

The story was pretty ridiculous, the goddess must have had a PMS episode when she blocked that tunnel. Personally i wouldn't have minded the split from the beginning, since i personally am more of a crop person, but it also was locking you out of potential marriage candidates early on. And a lot of events barely made sense and as you said the cooking contest was rather dumb. It showed a lot of the declining quality in recent HM games.

Yes, a rod is all but guaranteed to get hit and charge up during a thunderstorm. So if you have two rods out you should get two batteries, one from each rod, the next day. Though you can easily farm up the materials and make 10+ rods to not only protect your crops but also sell excess batteries for some spare change.
