Rare drops aren't really the problem, but Frontier offers an absurd amount of possible optimization and tons of shit to customize and level up. Individual monsters usually aren't that bad outside of Raviente who's designed to be a timesink for those who've done absolutely everything else the game has to offer.

Alchemy Style allows you to "extract" benefits from items. Example is Potions/Mega Potions giving your weapon a Life Hone like effect and Barrel Bombs giving blast damage on weapons without blast and boosting blast on weapons with blast. Note you have the option of using "Alchemy" when selecting the item and using it removes it from the inventory (ie. Using Alchemy on Potions will not heal you and is instead consumed to give you the Life Hone like skill)

You should probably prioritize raw armor over skills, so just make anything that's available to you (you should still try to get skills though).
While it's doable alone, G-rank is balanced around multiplayer so try that if you're really struggling. You should still be able to solo everything in G1 though, as the fights are all pretty easy to learn.
