I got to the end of Part 1 of RD Hard a while ago but I'm sort of considering starting over at Normal because Hard is really frustrating. Miss chances are really high and I have too few somewhat competent units that actually gain experience (Nolan, Jill, Aran, Sothe w/ double xp skill, Micaiah, and Laura) in comparison to the massive number of enemies there are. Nolan, Jill, and Aran aren't even that tanky and don't deal that much damage. I could just have OP units like the BK, Nailah, and Zihark deal with shit, but I feel like that would waste valuable resources.

I do know I should just give up on Ilyana and Leo, though. Those two are just big mounds of shit; they helped a bit earlier, but they certainly don't now.

I think they just tried too hard in general with you. Not only do they push her on you so much that it can feel like she's the love interest even if you didn't S-rank her, but they try and beat you over the head with how great she is via dialogue. Treehouse even managed to add to that.

And of course there's her heavy involvement in the plot, which is universally panned. Even worse, she's the 'tactician' of the game, so stuff like the Gooran and the World's Most Comfy Throne is her idea.

I mean, we can disregard the fact that without FE Awakening being the game it is, FE would have crashed as a series. I hear the argument "Isn't as good as the old ones." a lot. Awakening started this trend of making the series relatable between players, and gave everyone a little different experiences via the marriage system, and the ability to either customize a character for the game, or insert yourself as this new, custom character. This made it highly marketable to any player, as you are able to make the game incredibly difficult with permadeath and high difficulty, or just set it to casual, and have easier fights with all characters available. Not to say that any form of that wasn't available in previous installments, but before Awakening, FE never really put all of these elements into one game. While other games like Path of Radiance sold well, they were topped in sales by Awakening, then again with Fates. So that's what Nintendo wants to sell. If it doesn't work, then it would stop selling. The old way never got the game to sell like it is. It's not like the the old way was forgotten either, Fates Conquest is proof of that.

Only thing that really holds them back is Sothe's promotion.

Volug stays strong as he builds up Strike ranking and Sothe has access to the only forgeable 1-2 range in RD Part 1. At worst Sothe just needs Forges to stay Revelant in Part 3 as well.

Volug is amazing for Part 1 but I'd suggest dropping him afterwards. He becomes too squishy and too tough to train up. Sothe on the other hand can keep up even in the late game as long as you're giving him decent xp and occasional forges. The Beast Killer lets him stay relevant in Part 3 regardless of level, so get him those whenever possible.

Well, it is true that a lot of the mechanics are pulled from other games. But the thing is, they were used differently in those games than they are now.

The children system was used with an actual timeskip, in a way that didn't tarnish the plot. Now it's become something shoehorned in for the sake of having it that detracts from the story.

Marriage has been in other games, but only in a limited caapcity. Characters had paired endings only with specific sets of other characters, which made them of better quality. Eliwood could marry three characters, not the entire female cast. The writers of the supports kept this in mind and could write the supports with romantic buildup in mind, not just throw in an S support that retcons what would be a friendship-only support for the sake of allowing you to marry someone else even after reaching A rank with someone.

Difficulty and the avatar are both new additions from FE12, and I would argue that the avatar is intrinsically bad, at least in the way it's been done so far. FE12's avatar completely robbed Marth of his character, Awakening's avatar made the main lord seem like a side-character and have to share the spotlight with him, making the story awkward, and Fates' avatar is loved and worshipped by everyone for seemingly no reason other than being the player character. They lead the army even though they have older siblings who should technically be leading it.

Regarding difficulty, Casual is fine honestly, as it's not like anyone is forcing more hardcore players to play it. But Phoenix Mode is just dumb all-around, as it's no longer a game if you play it that way. You might as well just add the ability to watch all the games dialogue instead of creating a difficulty like that.

Eh, I kind of disagree.

The thing about Casual is that for the most part it doesn't punish you for losing units on a map as much as it should. It encourages kamikaze strats where you don't really care if a unit dies or not, because you're getting them back next chapter anyways.

It's not as bad as Phoenix mode mind you, but I do think that it discourages a newer player from playing better instead of just not caring if a unit dies.

So Awakening and Fates are not so great when compared to the older titles, but it's not just because they're new. It's because they're trying to appeal to so many facets of the playerbase that they end up doing most everything weaker as a result. The marketing strategy for Fates shows this best, they made two entirely separate games in the same world to try and pull everyone in, and made a third game with the real ending, and all three suffered as a result.

For the games to be good again, there needs to be a return to form. IS needs to realize that if they want to make a good game, they can't appeal to absolutely everyone. They need to come up with an idea and make something solid, and stop worrying about alienating people. After all, if the reason people like Fire Emblem, it shouldn't be because they only like the eugenics, or the castle building feature, or pairing up all the characters, or making an avatar. It should be because they like what's at the core of the game: a turn-based strategy RPG. As long as that is stlil there, people who actually enjoy Fire Emblem for what it is will probably be interested.
