You are LATE
>>
>>158850707

Apart from the LW Perk and Alien packs, an AI enhancer and little tweaks like removing the hidden aim assists from Commander difficulty, all of the gameplay changes are part of a mod suite of my own that I've been tinkering with since launch.

Longer campaign, larger pods, more pods, increased stats and damage for mid-late game aliens, no limit on how many enemies can target the same XCOM soldier, Chryssalids on all retaliation missions, increased range penalties for shotguns, etc, etc.

I've also done stuff to buff XCOM, like increase squad size from 4-6 to 5-7, but the sum total is such boundless magnificence on the tactical layer that even I'm getting sick of it, and I'm the sort of moaning masochist who enjoys when games kick the hell out of me.

It's certainly true that we have less to talk about because we're all playing slightly different games, especially in the sense that we can't share tactics as naturally as we could in the LW days. Not sure that's the only reason why we're on life support, though.

>>158898994

How intelligent do you think the Faceless is? Is it sapient? Can it imitate human speech and mannerisms besides just shapeshifting? Or is it dumb animal that's just trained to disguise and then start swiping its claws around when shit goes down.
>>
>>158899875
i would say its the latter since we never worry about faceless getting into the avenger
also it would explain Bradford's comment about advent not needing infiltration units since the faceless its more of an ambusher enemy rather than actual infiltration
>>
>>158900290
>>158899875
Definitely side with the dumb animal argument that also backs up Bradford's comments. Thin men on the other hand were clearly very intelligent and could speak multiple human languages.
>>
>>158900290

Yeah, it fits. So the Faceless is basically a giant, shapeshifting attack dog. I wonder if it's supposed to be made from human genetic slag from Avatar leftovers.

X2 sorted in order of apparent intelligence:

Ethereal > Viper > Muton = Sectoid = Andromedon > Codex > Gatekeeper > Archon > Faceless = Chryssalid = Berserker

Not sure about the ADVENT troops. Also not sure just how deep the supposed mind control of the aliens goes. I prefer to think of it as a subtle form of compulsion rather than remote control, because killing the ayys is a lot less satisfying if they are mindless shells who can't be held responsible for their actions.
>>
>>158901907
I'd say go for a commander campaign. Also, if you haven't done an ironman try for that. Mod anytime you want though.

>>158901986
I'm really not sure what to make of the Gatekeeper intelligence. Also I submit that codexi are smarter for sure than mutons.
>>
>>158901306

>>158901907
definitely crank up the difficulty, and if you feel like you have vanilla X2 figured out then start modding it
either way i would recommend some quality of life mods and map packs to spice things up
you can find a link to the Modlist Steam Collection in the op
>>
>>158902212
>codexi are smarter for sure than mutons

Gut feeling would lead me to agree, it's a highly advanced creature. I ranked it below the muton because I wasn't sure whether it has sapience in its own right, or if it's more like bipedal anti-virus, a super-advanced AI.
>>
>>158901986
Compulsions over years to make the control nearly needless makes sense but the way the Advent are described as acting when control is severed implies its enough to cause some to freak out, while others just stick to their programming because its all they know
>>
>>158901907

Grab some mods you find interesting, step up the difficulty and play again. I've found the game to have ridiculous longevity.
>>
>>158902667

Yeah, I got the impression that the ADVENT soldiers are more or less dependent on the psionic network and have their personalities and individuality suppressed, while the actual aliens like the Viper and the Muton are a lot more free and bossing ADVENT around.

On the subject of mods, I'm worried that specifically the "long war enemies" and the ones that add classes would unbalance things to hell and back; I might just stick with the map ones, the fixes, and the quality of life ones.

The LW alien pack isn't as magnificent as you might expect, and the perk pack is a downright cheat.I use it, because eight classes are a lot more fun than four, but I had to even it out with some buffs for the aliens.
>>

Yo /xcg/ I need some advice. I'm getting ready to start a new xcom 2 commander ironman campaign. I haven't played since the initial release so I'm not really up to date with the all the mods and dlc.

I was wondering if alien hunters is worthwhile? The boss creatures seem OP and the weapons look a little goofy.

Also are the LW perk and alien packs decently balanced? Or should I just roll with vanilla perks / classes and a better advent?
>>
>>158910682
The perk pack is good with the ayy pack I find
>>
>>158910682
Frankly, I thought the rulers DLC kinda unbalances things, the freeze grenade is OP against everything, but the alien rulers are op against pretty much everything but the freeze grenades.
>>
>>158904960
Because it was terrible to play, the museum had like two full cover pieces on the entire map (the statues near the stairs and some plant pots right on spawn) forcing you to either overwatch forever or lose people. The construction site was a lot better in that it was pushable, but only by sneaking down that tunnel that goes around the edge of the map.
>>
How bad, on a scale from 1 to 'suicide', is using half cover and not hunkering?

Lost my best grenadier.
Mission was going great until a random faceless popped up after I had already used everyone's moves except my ranger, and he missed the crit.

Dickass faceless runs right up to my Lt grenadier, who is taking cover on a car, bitch slaps him and simultaneously explodes the car, killing both of them
>>

Who yeah, big rule of retaliation missions are no explodable cover and no roofs as long as you don't know where the faceless are.

Also, as rule in X2 avoid cars as cover whenever possible. They are just explosive barrels from FPS games and Comand and Conquer games disguised in a TBS.

What do people here think about the time honoured tradition that the sequel to an XCOM game being a failure state?
>>
>>158926205
Were the older games like that too?

I was thinking about this earlier. I don't really like it. At least not the way it's presented. I think they're tying to say EU was a simulation? That's pretty shitty. I'd rather they just went with the whole alternate timeline thing and leave EU alone. I think it would be just fine that way.
>>
Also I really don't like the implications that The Bureau is canon. Although that's just some speculation I've read.
>>
>>158926468
EW Vahlen says she found redacted files from the 60s. And the Bureau uses the map theme from EU/EW during its ending.

I like the implications.
The Commander of EU/EW/X2 is Asaru bonded to some chump
>>
>>158926345
I think when it came to it, they ALSO said that it was an alternate universe, as was EW to EU, and that's what makes me a bit nervous of the whole 'alternate universe' sequel design, it works, sure, but I think after a few too many repetitions you start to lose track of the action going on at the moment.

Also, I think the first time the sequel was a fail state was apocalypse, where XCOM won, but fucked the environment so everyone had to move to the megacity.
>>
>>158926667
When it comes to EW I don't really think it needs to be an alternate universe since it doesn't really change anything it just adds to it. But I guess it's whatever.

I think any sequel can take place whenever as long as it's interesting and doesn't try to retcon. I'm really excited at the prospect of a sequel going back underwater though.
>>
>>158926626
I don't like that explanation, it takes away so much from The Commander's character; I would prefer it if he was simply a brilliant tactician who's experience directing all the ADVENT soldiers from afar (and latent psionic abilities(how do you think he get's his orders to each and every soldier?)) allowed him to ascend in a similar way to the etherials, although that doesn't really take into account how they eldars talk to you in the last mission.

>>158926345
I interpret it as more of EU/EW being a simulation, but in that universe only.
>>158926468
Why not?
>>
>>158927249
I just don't really like the game itself or it's story. And like that other guy said I think it takes something away from the Commander's character. But I guess at the end of the day I can just pretend each game is its own universe.
>>
>>158927249
Also that's some pretty cool art.
>>
>>158927428
>>158926879
>>158926468
Yeah I understand the dislike for Bureau being canon due to the "implications."
In every single x-com game, it's just you, your staff, and you soldiers. You take these men and women and lead them to victory over the invading aliens, a job well done.

In XCOM1 and XCOM2, this would appear to be the same exact theme. But, in the Bureau, it's clear that humanity only wins because an ethereal is helping us. Without that eathereal, we would most certainly lose. So that already starts to errode the narrative of humanity rising up of it's own accord and defeating the invader.

And then you get to the hints in X2 suggesting that maybe the commander is bound to the same ethereal, and you hit the same issue. It really dillutes this narrative of it just being you and your men doing the impossible, and into this idea that we only keep on beating the ayys because we have a powerful ethereal on our side. Just doesn't seem nearly as impressive or cool.

It really depends on what aesthetics you prefer. Try the Halo, Titanfall and the like for cosmetic mods first. Then go for the Long War Studios mods for something more elaborate. Check Marbozir modded campaigns to see more options in action.

Also, check the OP for recommendations.

Capnbubs, all the long war ones, a better advent, spectrum enemies, a better ai, a better advent pods plus(or something like that), pick some guerilla war mods too, bruiser class, SpecOps class, advent sniper, mercenary plasma.

That's just off the top of my head. Obviously there's also a million cosmetic and voice mods out there.

I want Thin Men Rebels.

>They are intelligent enough to communicate with humans.

>They had no problem ratting out their masters without torture.

>the aliens forcefully changed their bodies in horrific experiments.

>Now they are decommissioned, fearing "disposal"

They have enough reason to fight back and free their snek-bruvas.
>>
>>159022461
>They had no problem ratting out their masters without torture

It's the opposite. Vahlen's report stated that they were apparently so resilient and fiercely loyal to the alien collective that the usual torture didn't work on them, and they had to come up with new, extra intrusive methods for interrogating them.

They expected thin men to be hardened against interrogation, and were surprised to find that this was not the case.

Research start:
>It seems unlikely that this particular species will break under interrogation as quickly as the other captives, as we believe it was specifically intended to serve as an infiltrator. Still, perhaps if we use more aggressive techniques, we can...coax...it into revealing additional information about how the aliens arrived here.

Research end:
>Capturing one of the invaders' infiltration specialists has proven both illuminating and disturbing. Although at first glance they resemble the human form, and are trained to communicate in a range of terrestrial languages, this specimen is far from human. We had assumed its role as an infiltration unit would preclude us from gaining anything of value during our interrogation. However, as it turns out, the captive was surprisingly...pliable once we began the procedure.

>Aside from its primary role as a reconnaissance and infiltration specialist, the Thin Man also proved to be quite familiar with the alien's navigation systems and celestial cartography. The information gained from this interrogation is of crucial importance to our efforts in reverse engineering the alien navigational computers and related systems.

You may be right and that too could be a factor of why it lost so bad against Waifuwatch but even so I still find quite a few parts and characters very well done.

Caldarius is one of my all time best both in character design and in the idea behind it's gameplay even when the later balancing of the game is hurting him a bit.

>>
>>159080324
What build should I do then?
>>
>>159080586
idk, people are pretty split over which build is stronger. Personally I think I would go for gunslinger, but when it comes to legendary, I feel like the marksmen is the weakest class overall.

So, I should run 2 rangers, 2 grenadiers, and 2 specialists?

Like a conceal ranger for scouting, a phantom run and gun ranger for fighting/if ranger 1 is hurt.

A gunner grenadier for removing armor and shit

A grenade grenadier for shooting acid grenades and shit

A combat specialist for guaranteed damage, hacking, and anti synthetic

and a heal specialist for healing?

>>159083435
>>159083561
get raped
>>
>>159083795
Perosnally I would probably run with 3 grenadiers, 2 rangers, 1 combat specialist,
or flip to 3 rangers, 2 grenadiers.
Later on you will replace people with psi soldiers.

Conceal ranger is always strongest ranger, split grenadier between explosive builds and gunner builds.
>>
>>159084108
Concealment rangers are strongest in combination with squadsight, though. I take one long gunslinger sniper (switch to long range build at colonel), 1 conceal ranger, 1 grenade-focused grenadier and a hacking/overwatch specialist, expanding to another ranger, then a gunner grenadier, replacing the explosive grenadier with a psi trooper eventually.

At least, I would if I still used vanilla classes. My force composition varies wildly when I'm screwing around with mod classes and playable aliens.

Given the right attachments and abilities, SPARKS fit the role of a gunner grenadier, with a secondary ability to play ranger with Strike/point blank shooting.

>>

Ivanka, Vutova and Fob become gunners, Jamie and Yang become rocketeers, and Julius becomes mystery meat in the cafeteria food.
>>
>>159097532
Mixed up Nande with Ivanka's last name. If you're going to give the gunners LMGs instead of SAWs, I might reverse those suggestions.
Julius is still dogfood.
>>
>>159097532
I always struggle making that particular choice because both gunners and rocketeers require good mobility and will, I make low-hp guys gunners because of the extra hp from the class, and the exceptionally accurate ones rocketeers, but when everyone is kinda middling it's hard.

In more detail, at high difficulties, and at low difficulties too, plasma weapons are too damaging. Cover decreases the chance you get hit but if you get hit it's very likely you'll lose the soldier early game. You need one soldier to win dozens of engagements and get promoted, and paying for every 65% chance to kill shot with 25% chance to kill return fire is not the way to that. So even full cover is insufficient if you want to get a soldier through multiple missions without losing him. Instead you should focus on not letting the ayys shoot at all, by breaking los at the end of turns where there are live active aliens, and by using explosives to guarantee kills.

The "strategy layer" refers to the stuff you do out of combat. The base building, holo-globe actions, airgame, research, resource management, etc. I just wish there was more to do on that layer in X2, and more important decision-making. Paths to take, so to speak.

Pretty sure the range is 9-11 days. I usually wait till the 11th day to maximze my roster. So it goes scan, wait a day before the cell expires, send the operative, wait until the mission is about to expire, then do the op, and then scan again in the next 11 days. If you are fine with taking your time on Exalt, most months you will only do 2 exalt missions, which also saves you money on the scans.

Obviously though, you may want to consider rushing everything if your roster can handle it since you will eliminate exalt faster, and the missions do generate lot's of cast and xp.

XCom from the other perspective must be really stressful. Imagine having to clean up the site of an All Ranger mission. You get there and there are just dozens of your men hacked to pieces with machetes. No shots fired, no enemy corpses, just piles of dead sectoids.

Imagine having to explain to your ayy boss that Blacksite Delta was taken down, and you're 90% certain it was four guys with swords.
"How," the spokesman asks, kneading his brow with three fingers from each hand.
"No idea, there were like 5000 shots fired but nobody hit anything."

There were MEC units in that base. There were dozens of men with laser rifles in that base. How did this happen. Then you get a fax from New York. It's happened again. Same MO. You have to write a report on this. There's a whole division of Vipers trying to fathom how a terrorist group could afford a sky ranger but couldn't afford to arm their men with guns.

Then the CCTV footage comes in. You realize. It's not that they didn't have guns. They just didn't feel like shooting your men. They WANTED to cut them to pieces with machetes. It's like a game for them.

Technically it would have to be the ending of Terror from the Deep that caused everyone to move to the megacities of Apocalypse. And the mining of elerium from ships that were shot down over the ocean in Enemy Unknown/UFO Defense is implied to be what kicked off the events of Terror from the Deep. So I think it started from the very beginning.

Might want to play in real-time for the beginning of the game to deal with brainsuckers. Then later, you may want to switch back to turn based when the ayys start deploying with Acid launchers that one hit kills and don't miss.

I've seen some other play-throughs, and it seems like for the airgame it's viable to use a huge force of disposable motor bikes. Make sure to carefully note wherever alien ships linger and connect those tubes to buildings as you will want to raid and clear out aliens asap to prevent factions from being taken over.
If you need cash, consider paying the cult of Sirius a visit and raiding their buildings. Kill their people and keep an eye out for cyclone which can be found on the ground as it sells for alot of cash.

Avoid the laser sniper rifle, it kind of sucks. Gas grenades are extremely good for stunning and even just non-environmentally damaging AOE crowd control, but be careful, it works very efficiently on your own troops.
Grenades are very good against alot of small low health units like brainsuckers, or especially multi-worms. If you are fighting a multi-worm, consider having a person ready to nade the corpse as soon as you kill it to kill all the worms at once.

Be careful about how you sell stuff on the market. If you sell alot of one good, the market will take this into account, the price of that item can tank. Also, any gear you sell in the market will end up being used by other factions. Keep this in mind as by selling hi-tech gear and weaponry to the black market, you will also be arming the Cult of Sirius and any other factions that may be hostile to you.

Speaking of hostilites, avoid collateral damage whenever possible as damaging their stuff, buildings, or people can every quickly turn them hostile, or cost you alot of money when you pay them off to look the other way.

Hope this helps.

Well, it's a 4X strategy game akin to Civ in space. You play as a civilization that has just taken its first space-faring footsteps, and you can customize your species and faction to whatever you like.

As you explore stars around your territory, you may come across inhabited worlds with primitive life, anything from the stone age to early space age, with everything inbetween. When you encounter these inhabited worlds, you can build Observation Posts to study them for science points.

Depending on your faction's ethics and policies, you can engage in several different manners of observing the primitives: passive observation (ie not interfering, just watching from afar), agressive observation (actively abducting members of the population to study them), technological enlightenment (you actually make contact and invest in fast-forwarding them to be a space-faring civilization), or covert infiltration (you genetically modify agents to appear as the aliens, and they slowly infiltrate the hierarchies of power to eventually hand over the planet to you with the population being fine with it because they think they chose it willingly).

Covert infiltration can fail or be stalled however, and one of the stalling events is basically that they found their very own XCOM (if they're in the early space age I think) Pic related.

>>
>>159253386
Thing is, XCOM EW is new, but is following an extremely tried and true formula established in the original x-com.

Set up your base, start research, launch mission, new research, new engineering, shoot down ufo, more research, sell junk, new mission, build and expand base, new mission, use new mission gear to improve interceptors, shoot down bigger ufo, new mission, better research, more engineering, new base improvements etc.

The strategy/geo game and tactical game feed into each other pretty seamlessly until you hit endgame. X2's geo/strategy portion is lacking, so it doesn't have as natural of a feedback loop, leaving not only the strategic sections weaker, but also the tactical.

Timers don't help either imo, in some ways theirs nothing wrong with them, but ultimately they are just too restrictive which heavily cuts down on tactical flexibility and they make up nearly every mission.
>>
>>159254667
Van doorn can't help but have all the fun.

>>159257364
>tried and true formula
XCOM EU is a bigger step away from the original formula than XCOM 2 is from XCOM 1. The move to one base, the revamped tactical combat compared to xcom/jagged aliance, it's a miracle it worked out.

Is there any other TBS that works like EU that they could've copied from? Naively when they're ditching the ufo defense tactical layer for a new paradigm they're making from scratch, the result should be pretty poor until a few games later.

I haven't played XCOM 2 but I remember when they announced there won't be air combat and it reignited the airgame debate. Some people were glad since they thought LW air combat sucks and is just something to be cheated past with ini edits, others felt that the air layer is what provides strategic depth and uncertainty.

>XCOM EU is a bigger step away from the original formula than XCOM 2 is from XCOM 1. The move to one base, the revamped tactical combat compared to xcom/jagged aliance, it's a miracle it worked out.
When it comes to the relationship between the tactical portion and strategy portion, XCOM EU is actually very close to the overall structure of x-com.

The actual details of the tactical portion are very different (though once again, if you are familiar with both, you'll find they are more closely "inpsired" than at first galnce.

But that's not the point, I'm talking about the relationship between the strategic and tactical sections, and X2's lack of airgame (with no replacement) and still simpler base and even weapon/armor manufacturing process moves the "relationship" much further away from the original formal than XCOM1 did.

It's a Long War as it siginifcanlty builds off of the base mechanics to the point that the experience is very different and feels fresh. The tech tree is huge (both a pro and con, but more of a pro), there are more factions and enemies to contend with, the airgame has even more depth with multiple different types of ships and armaments being viable and enemy faction ships will actually put up a fight, so you will have to actually work at building youself to teh point where you can shoot down most ships (and eventually every ship). The amount of weapons is huge, they also expand on damage types so in a addtion to the original there is lot's of cutting weapons, acid, posion, special, psionic, choking, and chem. Both your units and enemies are alot more sturdier, and with proper armor you can expect people to actually get wounded or go unconsious instead of dropping dead.
The strategic game is huge with slaves, way more captures for techs, building entire bases for training new recruits, building manufacturing plants, research bases, even just storage bases. My game lasted seven years, and I was still actually playing to win, not dragging things out.
Different kind of stats also have way more impact now as armor has different stat bonuses and penalties, and weapons have different stat bonuses or stat requirements to be used effectively.
Honestly it's kind of like RPG levels of equipment choice and decisions, but instead for every single soldier.

Be warned though, if you don't like managing your base, you probably won't make it. There is a huge amount of base management that goes into keeping your manufacturing and research going, all your troops properly armed, and keeping your air-game up to snuff.
Anyway, so theirs some ways PirateZ builds a new experience off the original.

And Long War is good anyway, but whatever.

>The tech tree is huge
so i have more bullshit statistics that do not actually influence gameplay to keep track of?
>the airgame has even more depth with multiple different types of ships and armaments being viable
the only game that improved upon interceptions was xenonauts. incidentally interceptions were the only good part of xenonauts. interceptions don't need to be hard, they just provide you maps.
>so you will have to actually work at building youself to teh point where you can shoot down most ships
i don't want to count cash in a tactics game, it's not a fucking weaboo stat management simulator. laser cannon tycoon is a good thing. it's a good thing.
>they also expand on damage types
more bullshit statistics. that no one cares about. more of the same doesn't make the thing better.
>Both your units and enemies are alot more sturdier
why would you ever want that? xcom health bars on soldiers and ayys are perfect. if you want soldiers to have a chance of surviving direct hit give them power armour, but they shouldn't be fired upon in a first place. sectopods, mutons and chryssalids are threatening enough as is.
>The strategic game is huge
that's a good thing but i foresee that actually strategic game is a huge shitfest where you have to manage a hundred stats which essentially all do the same thing. that's how most mods are and how you were describing this mod so far.
>Different kind of stats also have way more impact now as armor has different stat bonuses and penalties, and weapons have different stat bonuses or stat requirements to be used effectively
it's not a fucking dota, why do people do this shit.

it seems from your description that piratez is precisely like long war. as in, shit.

Why don't you just give it a shot since you are apparently just going to dissect everything I say and decide it's a bad thing? I can't perfectly explain to you why I enjoy PirateZ, but I guess I'll try to clarify anyway.

The Original is fantastic. You seem to have this idea that I think PirateZ is a replacement for the og x-com, but it isn't, its another game, and a fun one at that.

The stuff I'm talking about is not useless filler, it actually has real impact on the game that means you can approach things a different way, and often have to approach things a different way.

If you want an example of an x-com mod with chaotic and unnecessary bloat, then look no further than FMP, which while fun, is definitely a huge mess.
PirateZ is actually a crafted experience, it is not "just x-com with more stuff," all the additions actually make it a different game.

The damage types do matter, because enemies have different resistances. You pack piercing weapons against Mercenaries, and you are gonna have a bad time. Instead, you would try to bring laser weapons and cutting weapons, even if they technically are not as good.

My point is, the new additions actually lead to tactical and strategic choices. It's not just more ways to skin a cat, you actually will want different methods for different cats. You will feel like you are playing a different game, not just an expanded x-com.

Like I already said, there might be more management then some players want, but then honestly, that's your preference. PirateZ is a game about management, reading, and even math. So if you don't want that then yeah, you may not like it. Just go give it a shot, it's getting close to a 1.0 version and is extremely stable (I played my entire first campaign on ironman).

>we're just playing turkeyshoot with ayys.
that's the most boring part of any campaign, I don't know how that's fun

>Instead, you would try to bring
wait, so you have to go to craft equipment screen every. single. fucking. time. just to have the same exact thing(a gun that shoots suff dead) that should be there from the start? how is this not the definition of bloat?

a good way to do different damage types is xcom 2- you have regular damage, you have armour that does damage reduction, and you have shredding damage.

having fire rounds for water ayy is retarded, it's not that fucking pokey-man game.
>>
>>159290195
>having fire rounds for water ayy is retarded, it's not that fucking pokey-man game.
Not it's "a fucking" x-com game, with damage resistances just like the original. Sectopods are weak to laser for example (laser does 150% damage). So bringing laser rifles or Heavy lasers for dealing with sectopods is actually a good idea.

Even xcom2 has the same stuff on a simpler level. (psi vs. high will targets not as effective, viper rounds don't affect vipers and lids, blue screen is "super effective" against bots).

Simply adding things does not automatically = bloat. Having to think about how you are going to defeat a late tier tough faction does not equal bloat.
>>
>>159290787
>(psi vs. high will targets not as effective, viper rounds don't affect vipers and lids, blue screen is "super effective" against bots).
that's tactics. you have limited amount of slots and enemies are mixed up equally through missions.

having a weapon type for specific missions is just dumb. you are just wasting time in inventory screen.

you do realise that in xcom2 you have to choose weither you take bluescreen rounds or grenade for your item slot. then you fight against mixed ayys and say grenade might be more useful to you, or maybe bluescreen, on tactical level. you don't know beforehand what will give you more of an age edge.

if you had the ability to choose bluescreen before mission that has exclusively robots than the whole mechanic is fucking idiotic- you're just doing useless mouse clicks as there is an obvious right choice that doesn't have any drawbacks.

how do you not understand this?

Yeah sure, but your argument is that somehow knowing beforehand makes it bloat, or meaningless, or bad . To do what I'm talking about you would need to: a) build a hyperwave decoder b)have encountered the mercenaries before c)recovered mercenaries in order to research them d)learn that they have very good piercing resistance and then e) launch a mission with that knowledge

It's a strategic decision that takes multiple components to get too. Furthermore, it's not like there are laser weapons (and definitely not plasma) laying all over the place. Early on you have limited laser weapons with limited ammo that you scavenged from your enemies and you can't reproduce the ammo yet. So you can use the laser weapons, but might not have the ammo for future engagements.
Or you could decide to save the laser ammo and go for cutting weapons, explosive, and fire, which will kill them, but cutting is melee, fire can be extremely unruly to use and often doesn't immediately kill the enemy in one turn, and mercenaries can still survive lots of explosives. Right there is strategic decision, and depending on what you decide to take, your tactics will change accordingly. Also you can actually just say fuck that noise and skip the mission, because unless it's a terror mission your free to decide what missions you do and do not want to do.
If you want to argue with me that player choice like I listed is a bad things it's probably going to fall on deaf ears.

Furthermore, I don't know how Bluescreen ammo is suppose to be a good representation of tactical choice. It's arguably the best ammo in the game next to talon rounds and is good against nearly every end game enemy X2 throws at you.
Also in Shen's Last Gift you have that exact choice and of course, if you can you will take those rounds.

Hello /xcg/

I want to know if you guys have anymore suggestions for the team roster.
Currently someone wants Advent Burgers in for Vahlen or Intriguing and another anon asked for Bradford sweater kits.

How would you feel about a game using circular movement pips that can be free aimed instead of the traditional snapgrid
>>
>>159360880

I would try it if it was a mod, otherwise no because i don't like change.
>>
>>159360880
Wasn't xcom1 non snapping?
>>
>>159360880
>circular movement pips
I would have to try it to be persuaded. Tiles are used for clarity. Squares are very clear, and Octagons give more freedom of movement, but still use tiles to ensure clarity.

Free movement sounds scary to me desu when it comes to calculating LOS and line of fire, or even what is and isn't considered in cover.
>>
>>159361687
For explosives, he's talking about movement.
>>
>>159361735
Cover is radius based, terminating outward the farther you are from the center of the circle

>>159361974
Are you proposing this for real time or still turn bases?

No, there are other much more substantive reasons. Ethereals hardly have any impact on the vast majority of a X1 campaign. If you play to just finish things up, you'll see the ethereals a grand total of two times.
