Honestly this is a sign, /xcg/. And we should stop, and listen, to what we are hearing. The thread died. Perhaps we were wrong. I mean, it takes effort to admit that, and even more strength to finally do what must be done. It has been an honor gentleman, but we must lay down our arms. ive put in something like 600 hours into the game, never played xcom1 one UFO games
went from veteran to legend gradually and all i can say its fantastic and from time and time again i have the urge to play it again, only thing stopping me is the quite brutal start on legend, till you get mag weapons its really an uphill battle

I just started xenonauts and I have a couple questions:

Can I make a soldier turn in place without moving from his tile?

Do the ayys roll for reaction fire for each move independent of length? So a guy moving closer in two-three separate move orders is at more risk than a guy given a single big run command?

What's a safe-ish way to blow up a wall without killing the alien behind?

How to avoid those turns where an ayy opens a door 10m away from the squad and gibs someone? Level the entire city from a distance slowly with rockets?

Yes. Right click, I believe.

Ayys roll for reaction fire based on movement tiles and reaction actions, not movement orders. Suppress them to stop this.

Explosives suck so much that blowing up walls won't kill aliens almost definitely. Map destruction is really bad so you aren't even guaranteed cover destruction. Don't bother with rockets. Use shield/shotgun combos in early game.

I don't like the tactical layer in xenonauts, it's somehow clunky, with ayys shooting from angles without being spotted in return. I understand when they're shooting from the second floor but it happens at ground level too.

The big flexibility in equipment is a plus but comes with its own problems, like being incentivized to overload a squad member or two with spare ammo and shields and dropping them on the landing zone, which is fussy work.

I guess I'm supposed to have a frontline of exclusively shields to tank the inevitable invisible ayy shooting from a window 5 tiles away..I don't like it.

I just feel a little clueless about most things. And I wonder of I maybe overthink some things that might just be trivial. Like when to get certain GTS upgrades, which rewards on the globe are worth getting, when to buy weapon upgrades, research priorities, and most importantly, having a good amount of soldiers so that I can always switch one out in case one gets injured. And a few months in, often when Mutons start rolling out, it's often more than one per mission that's injured. I know the basics, always stay in high cover, if its not available, stick to low and hunker down.

Not many tips come to mind for xcom 2 actually; just use your most powerful abilities to wipe pods before they can do much harm, inhibit any survivors with flashbangs/poison/etc. Run and gun rangers are great, but try and know what's around their destination before you send them off. You can survive accidental pulls with a well-placed mimic beacon, aid protocol on the vulnerable, and the aforementioned debuffs on the new pod

Yeah I can't do this. Second mission on veteran, had to destroy some ayy shit in 8 turns. Kill it in a few turns no prob and get the first advent pod. Advent guy and a sectoid shows up. Can't kill the sec on first turn but can kill the advent. Another advent and sectoid show up on other side of road. Sectoids use their combined might to disorient, hit soldiers with laser guns and cause them to panic, mind control one and in my frustration, cause me to shoot one of my mind controlled soldiers instead of the sectoid, killing him. I seriously doubt there's any hope for me to git gud at this game.

Here's a good general tip: don't put your faith in RNG. Usually people who are shit at this game don't understand that you have to make circumstances favorable to you (by busting enemies out of cover with explosives, flanking, flashbanging/suppressing those you can't kill on your turn), instead of hoping that your <100% shots will land.

Also, plan your turn ahead before doing anything. Start taking your moves when you know what your every unit will do. Ask yourself questions like
>What will I do if this shot misses or does do little damage?
>In which order should I take my moves?
>Which one of these enemies is the most dangerous?
>What kind of tools do I have to salvage this if the things do not go my way?
>Can I afford taking risks?

I tried using rocket launchers to slowly destroy terrain but they're too heavy and costly to use. I have to spend a turn reloading for each shot, or I can carry multiple loaded ones in which case they're even heavier. With C4 I can put a couple bricks on every soldier and remove walls with much less hassle. So I'm very curious why you'd prefer rockets, is it a combat thing?

Just beat the game. Should have done it back in April but I had to take a layoff.

Thought the ending was underwhelming. The last mission was okay up until that last room. Before that, it was nice to be able to explore a level while also fighting off enemies - and those "human simulator rooms" were a good design touch - but overall they just throw enemies at you, the same enemies youve been fighting since midgame. The last level could have been a good place to show some new one-off creatures just to throw in a curveball, but instrad it's just 6 Andromodads and Gatekeepers with more armor.

The last room was reeeaaally lazy. "Hey, let's just cram some pods together and shove them into the fight!" The Avatars were intetesting enemies because of their ability to jump around the map, but even with that + psionic abilities they just felt too easy. Maybe if the squad could damage them but Commander's Avatar was the only one who could actually kill them it would have presented some deeper tactical choices.

And then the mission just ends. You don't even need to kill everything. And your troops barely get any screentime in the last cutscene. The jump from the Commander's battle with the Elders to the wake-up in the Avenger was really canned. It was much weaker than the finale of EU, which showed some genuine emotion amongst the troops as well as the overrall conclusion to the war.

Idk i think the pacing of the game wore really thin about 80% of the way through, and the final assault is just the result of that. Still a solid 8/10 game and my favorite of the year thus far.

How do I build my mens? Do rangers take shadow step or shadow strike? Conceal or Run and gun?

For the other ones the only thing I know is Blasting pads are shit, take revive protocol earlier and then respec it to haywire later. And take Long Watch and lightning hands and later respec the lightning hands to dead eye.

I did open one of his mods though and his method for getting accessories to fit the face was different than mine. I made a morph target for each face, but with his balaclava he just added vertex weights. I tried doing that and either the piercings don't move properly or get deformed. At this rate I may not be able to make male variants.

Unfortuantley steam automatically updates mods. I would reccommend getting the alternate XCOM 2 launcher for working with mods easier. It also let's you navigate directly to mod folders. You can save mods to your xcom2 directory in order to still use them, but avoid auto updates.

I have a texmod issue with LW. I select the .exe, select the textures, launch, it does the long loading time but when the game starts the textures haven't been replaced. All i know is that if the models and stuff are showing as black then it means that there's something wrong with the mod's shader cache. However if no one else is having that problem for that mod then there's something wrong on your end.

You could try unsubscribing to the mod and subscribing again to download it again, or you could try deleting the file "RefShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM4.upk" in steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XComGame\Content and verify game cache. That last one might not be a good idea though.

I've only encountered this problem when working on my own mod though, never encountered on a mod that i subscribed to.

As for the game taking a long time to load i dunno, i don't experience particularly long load times but mine is on an SSD, it does get pretty laggy when customizing soldiers though.

If you built a pure debuff engineer you would go:

So the clear advantage for the engineer is that he gets mayhem two perks earlier. This is a good point, because a big downfall of the bullet wizard is how long it takes to actually get all the proper perks for consistent debuffing.

However, things don't looks nearly as good on most other points. Danger Zone also means that Gunners can debuff more than one target per turn. Gunners get to take Will to survive, which once again ups their tankiness. This is pitted against the Engineer potentially taking Extra Conditioning, which can add a bit more health, but doesn't add the effective health of extra DR against multiple attackers. Doubletap means that the gunner can also contribute damage to two separate enemies as well as shredder and holo.
Son then comes item considerations. The engineer will need one slot taken up by shredder ammo at all times. This leaves one slot for nades for most of the campaign till the end. Gunner get's his usual two on the other hand. The engineer will still have nades, and probably I would go for support nades since he can't get sapper. Smoke and mirrors plus bombard could be good for some smoke or chem nades. You could also drop extra-conditioning for pack master if you aren't as worried about that bit of tankiness and will. Unfortunately, without the smoke grenades, your engineer only gets one action. I'm a big believer in specialization, so too me the debuff engineer smacks of an inefficient build imo.

When I was planning my OW medic I thought of RfA as a mandatory perk but after using RR for a while, there's just not enough ammo to be both shooting and overwatching with RR. I doubt it will be worth it even with LnL, so I think I'll go for a hybrid with weak smoke.

Unless you have a larger squad, respeccing is not easy as you often don't want to leave a key team member behind for your missions.

Rangers are perfectly good speccing straight into their conceal build imo.

I've actually tried the gunner with blast padding then speccing into shredder, but at least on legendary you will want shredder very fast, and the constant barrage of missions means you won't want to spend that extra 10 days re-speccing.

I think re-speccing only really works for later game consideration since you should be more in control by then. Personally, I think combat protocol is always good for the entire campaign, since the damage scales with gremlin upgrades.

For grenadiers, I usually run one explosives oriented, and one gunner oriented.

Yeah Apoc balance feels weird because of that. Turn based in early in the game will get you completely screwed by headcrabs and poppers, while real-time makes headcrabs a peace of cake and really helps against poppers and hyperworms.

But then later, aliens get this acid launcher the can one shot people and never misses once you shoot it. Then turn based is way better to combat that. Pretty Awkward.

I have this crazy idea for the expansion, where you get a sidecampaign in which you can choose between rescuing Vahlen (unlocking OP gene mods but leading to Tygan's capture and domination by ADVENT, with new OP robotic enemies and rulers) or save Tygan and let Vahlen be captured (cybernetic augs vs. MAGNIFICENT aliens).

Maybe something to compensate later, like a "Find dr. Tygan's analysis of Shen's files", which let you get a ruler weapon for SPARKS or "decrypt Vahlen's diaries" which gives you some armor or some other shit.

I think it's a good idea. Conceptually, making a boss unit, or a single enemy that can absolutely decimate your squad is a bit awkward in the XCOM system. The Ruler action system actually makes them into a proper boss unit, but you can still fight back.

Sure it can be tweaked, and maybe they need to tone it down to offensive actions as has been suggested, but I think it's a very strong concept.
Also pic related. The rulers aren't supposed to be cuddly. They are a challenge DLC meant to make your day miserable. Even then, they still get rekt most of the time.

If you feel like that's an issue, follow the next couple of campaign through to the end. It's painful, but you'll get some good experience and a better grasp of how well you are actually doing at any point in an XCOM campaign.
