Run through the first chalice twice for two Hotdog Fire Radials (or farm them from the fire axe pthumerians on layer 2) and pick up the Fire Waning gems below the Abandoned Workshop next to the Brainsucker. Slot it into a Radial, Radial, Waning weapon, preferably a serrated one like a Saw Cleaver/Spear. That alone will get you through the game if you pump Vit and Arc along the way.

Once you hit Lighthouse Hut in the DLC, farm 20.3% Bolt gems from the fish wizards and a Bolt Waning cam be found near the Blood Rock. Or get lucky and get an Out-of-shape from the fish wizards. Really helpful for Fire resistant bosses like Defiled Hotdog and Laurence.

Arcane is tougher, you'll have to farm Elder for Cold Abyssals (can be found in all 3 dungeon types), Abbhorent for Bolts, Hotdog for Fire, Isz Watchers for elemental 27.2%'s, maybe Ebrietas for Arcane Abyssals, and Bone Ash Hunters for elemental Radials which are better than Cold Abyssals on the Kos Parasite and some other weapons. 2 BAH Arcane Radials and a 27.2% Arcane Triangle on an Uncanny Parasite is optimal, the Radials have to be 23.9%+15 Arc iirc. You could switch one for a Cold Abyssal Radial since farming BAHs is annoying.

You'll be rolling in Chunks/Blood Rocks. Wear an Eye rune when farming the gems, and you pretty much add just about enough Discovery to get 2 Chunks each time you kill the bosses.

Ludwig's Holy Blade is another weapon that benefits from high Strength (and Skill, it scales evenly with both but it's the shitter weapon most newbies pick up and the moveset isn't too interesting). Axe is fine though, tricked charged r2 is abusable in PvE. Saw Cleaver is good too as a fast weapon, Strength leaning Quality weapon. There will be lots of options later on, Strength has a pretty wide selection especially with the DLC and Heavy Abyssal gems.

But it's not though, Arc defense and damage reduction works the same as any other damage. Certain things resist it and certain things are weak to it. The maths is identical to physical damage, it just depends on what you are fighting.

If you have 800 arcane damage and an enemy has 100 arc defense you will deal 720 damage to them because once DMG = >8*DEF you deal 0.9*DMG to thier health bar. If you change all these values from Arc to Phys, or fire or whatever it's exactly the same. Clothes on players/NPC's add an extra % reduction at the end, 100 arcane damage reduction from armour equals 10% mitigation so an extra 72 damage will be lopped off.

Got the game some 2-3 weeks ago an played through the story without considering the dungeons, pretty enjoyable game, bosses weren't as hard as I was expecting (save for 2 or 3 I had trouble with)

Now I'm at the point where house's on fire and Gehrman awaiting you and since I'm attempting platinum in my first run it's time to run the dungeons before the final fight.

My character's build is something like this

Stamina 30
Strength 17
Skill 32
Blootinge 19
Arcane 17

Weapons I mainly use are Saw Spear, Threaded Cane, Ludwig's Sword and Chikage all ranging between +5 and +7 . Evelyn +6 and torch on left hand.

Any tips on how how to level my character and what weapon should I max before attempting the dungeons? I heard they start easy but get nasty later on.

Your stats are pretty fucked if you plan to PvP around 120 or below. 40-50 Vit, 20 is the maximum End I'd recommend but you're well over that so don't touch it. First softcap is 25, next is 50. You could get 18 Arcane for Augur, leave Blt or get to 25 or less. Strength could stay or moved to 25, Skill 50.

Get Winter Lantern gems from Mergo's Loft or DLC, they're around 20% and the DLC has better numbers.

In that case, make leveling Skill and Vit your first priorities. Just jump into the dungeons now, as long as you have a +6 weapon and okay-ish gems you'll do fine for most of them. When it starts getting hard level a weapon above +6 and get those Winter Lantern gems I mentioned. I'd upgrade the Saw. Chikage tricked is pretty shit with low Bloodtinge and untricked is worser.

I'm confused. My Whirlgig saw has nearly 880 AR when gemmed, but my Church Pick that has one gem that's 2% less than optimal damage, and it visceral attacks for almost 400 more damage.

Most Strength weapons, Arm is split damage and has lower AR compared to other weapons even with high gems. Saw Cleaver, Pizza Cutter, Ludwig Blade, Church Pick, Kirkhammer, etc would beat it.

Beast Claw without Beast Embrace is better for PvP, with the rune better for PvE. It's also difficult to use due to its small range and lower AR but it's fast, kind of like a Strength Blade of Mercy without the great dash r1.
