You're only as much as powerful as other classes in your team. You have to rely on your Engineer to get you breathing space with sentry, and Pyro to create a visual frontline for you both. Map knowledge is a must to practice shots, as much as awareness. A few tips, hope those work for you.
>abuse windows, porches, ledges and small gaps between plates to take potshots
>obvious tall towers gets you little to no cover for blast jumping power classes, avoid them unless you trust your skills.

Medics' weapons are only there to keep him alive, not to kill things. If they were going to add another medic primary, it should still be not great in direct combat, only when it's used for retreating.

How the hell do I become credit to team/DM people as Engineer? It always goes the same way for me:

If your team is competent, they should be able to hold off the other team long enough for you to upgrade your shit. If you're being as efficient as possible, your sentry should be level 2 by the time the gate opens anyway.

Engie is a very situational class.
When I play engie, I essentially have the mindset of a scout. It allows me to place buildings where people don't usually look, or are hard to destroy.
Most of the time I either use the gunslinger or the jag so I can get shit up quickly, and then focus on roaming and covering flanks. You can be surprised how effective you can be in close combat.

One more thing, you are going to get your shit fucked up. Plan for alternate positions or fall back, don't be afraid to switch classes if you feel you're not helping anymore.
