I don't think problem of Stellaris is geography. I think it's problem is that they wanted modular system for factions but forrgot what's really important about them. You don't need major gameplay differences for factions to be unique, you need flavour. Historical games get off easy, they have loads of flavor "for free", merely at the cost of lives of all poor sods who died for the flag throughout history. With fantasy/sf games this isn't so.

Let's look at SMAC - do you folks realise that difference between two SMAC factions and two stellaris factions are more or less the same? You can easly reproduce the whole lot in stellaris engine, plus minus one or two exceptions. Yet they FELT radically different. They breathed flavour, the entire game did. Stellaris on the other hand feels like someone made TVtropes/scifi page into a cheecklist and went over it whilst slpapping graphics and mediocre gameplay on top of it.

The problem with Stellaris isn't the factions but the ethos, they don't play differently at all, one could be a fanatical pacifist or a fanatical militarist but they will go through the same motions throughout the entire game

The events and different responses to them do help flesh out but that alone is not enough, gameplay gotta be different as well.

I saw in one of the dev diaries that they plan on revamping the ethics part of the game in the next major patch so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Your point is potentially correct, but I don't really know what can be done about it in Stellaris' case. You can have a thousand flavourful factions in EUIV because all the flavour's in wikipedia. And in SMAC you have 7 flavourful factions because with just 7 you can actually design them carefully. But in Stellaris? Not so much.

And I'm telling you you don't need gameplay difference for factions to be different. And ethos are closest thing to factions we have, outside of those mockups it comes preloaded with. I would love meaningful gameplay differences between factions/ethos but you don't NEED it.
>The events and different responses to them do help flesh out but that alone is not enough, gameplay gotta be different as well.
Again, look at civ, look at smac, look at dozens of other 4x games where it isn't. They all have their own flaws, but unique flavour, such as music, art, and writing, of the factions save them from feeling the same.
>I saw in one of the dev diaries that they plan on revamping the ethics part of the game in the next major patch so I'm cautiously optimistic.
I suspect since they seem hellbound on staying the course the only way for stellaris to become good, is about 2 years of gradual patching into something with enough gameplay elements to overlook lackluster atmosphere.

I used to think this was the problem, but consider Civ. Do the Aztecs play in any fundamental way differently to Korea? No. All the mechanics are the same, there's some moderate bonus that one gets to war that the other gets to peace - exactly like Stellaris gives bonus peacetime happiness to pacifists and bonus wartime happiness to militarists.

So I don't think it can be as simple as that.

I don't think I can agree with this. Not because Paradox doesn't release underkooked games, but because paradox releases prior to stellaris felt underkooked in a different way.

Take CK2 It was never lacking in atmosphere or depth really, it was lacking in polish and breadth. Like a house with a window missing, toilet malfunctioning and a garden so abandoned you need a machete to break through.

With stellaris it's different, it feels like a newly build appartment. It's clean, it's empty, it's soulless.

It's up to individuals to decide which is better.
And I really need to do some decorating in my room now that I think about it.

>you can flavour out the ideologies with additional ethic specific techs

I think this would help if the techs were REALLY different. Like, changes-your-whole-playstyle-for-the-entire-game different.

So one ethos (materialist?) ends up researching The Matrix and your worlds end up carpeted in pod-farms that give you research + energy + minerals all at once. Spend all game trying to infiltrate other empires' computer networks and make their robots go Machine Consciousness by design rather than accident.

Collectivists(?) research Space Gulag and you can turn asteroids into insane production pop-holding worlds worked by slaves. Use all that production to build Socialist Utopia, and people defect to you with rebellions without you having to fire a single shot.

Spiritualists strategy revolves around, I dunno, sacrificing 10,000 psykers to the Golden Throne every day until their prayers summon those Dimensional Horrors from Leviathans that you then sic on your enemies.

Stuff like that, stuff that actually gets you to use a different "grand strategy" other than just 'I fite u 4 planet'.
Basically the player should BECOME something like the Unbidden / Scourge / Synths over the course of the game, not (just) be told that "OMG this is too weird you must kill it"
>>
>>158768671
It plays more like a realtime 4x than a grand strategy game. Unlike most Paradox Interactive titles it also is playable by people without autism, hence the butthurt about it (much like CK2 before it got good or EUIV).

SMAC had a handful of pre-set, pre-written factions, Stellaris lets you design your own empire from scratch. SMAC is a more narrative game with a plot, Stellaris is a sandbox. You can't make Stellaris "feel" more like SMAC narratively without taking away what most people want to play it for - making the Imperium or Soviet Union in space. The only way to make Stellaris more immersive is gameplay changes.

It's kind of a GS/4X hybrid.
Which unfortunately means that it is simultaneously a shallow GS and a boring 4X.

Although the real reason it's discussed here is because it was kicked out of /gsg/ for being too popular and/or not historical enough.

Well... it's not, really. It's only popular by the very low standards of a GS, and that's more because Paradox has been learning to shill better over the years than that it's any sort of good game.

Actually, I'll qualify that: Stellaris IS a good game - for like the first 20 hours when everything is new and novel. Which is all game reviewers and interested normies will ever see. To actual gs players that's an eye-blink, and after that 20 hours it's boring.
>>
>>158768982
I honestly think it's not too late to introduce proper factions in stellaris. about a dozen or so should do. Use them as FE or advanced starts only. Make them really feel unique. Music, Art, hullpaint, history, the works. Do to each of them what they did to human's/sol. They even already have basis for it in the game with archeology quest chaiins. Make them always show up in this form or that. And you've already made a leap towards replayability that would otherwise require a tonn of coding which paradox repeatedly shown unwilling to do.

>SMAC had a handful of pre-set, pre-written factions, Stellaris lets you design your own empire from scratch. SMAC is a more narrative game with a plot, Stellaris is a sandbox.

Yeah, and that's shit design, no atmosphere means nothing to keep you in but your own RP and gameplay. RP against a screen requires at least 2 wifus as far as I'm concerned. And I doubt anyone is in awe of stellaris gameplay if they ever played 4x or a gsg.

>You can't make Stellaris "feel" more like SMAC narratively without taking away what most people want to play it for - making the Imperium or Soviet Union in space. The only way to make Stellaris more immersive is gameplay changes.

Of course you can, above outlines just one way to do it. Also don't use "most people" in an argument, ever.
>>
How come with billions more TEKNOLOGY no one beat SMAC or made a 1 to 1 copy of it but removing the bad shit? Are devs retarded?

I would love to see a combination of spiritual collectivists create a hive mind so I can finally play the zerg like they were meant to be played.

Give it massive bonus to production and aggriculture, but make assimilation process take more time.

Not true. Gsg acknowledges and adores distant worlds. Most fags don't actually play it, but that's cause old habits die hard.

>>158769570
Are you at all familiar with anime? Ever heard of sword arts online? It's similar. On surface it offers all the cool shit of 4x/gsg IN SPACE! in a neat package. Take a shovel, start digging and you start having issues across the spectrum. It's not as bad as SOA, but it's a decent analogy i find.

Non of that is GS. As close as one can define GS vs 4x difference is about level of planning and breadth of options that goes into this or that action. Both in stellaris doesn't approach even EU4 levels, and EU is easiest gsg out there. Except for that joke of a brainded game HoI4.

I feel like I'm emphasizing resources too much and generic tiles too little because I barely see why I should build new cities while the AI is spamming them all over the place. Only downside I have had so far was this one game in which I had some 8 cities because I tried to force myself to go very wide and it ended up putting me in an unhappiness spiral

Also what the fuck is up with religion, the AI just spams be with missionaries and then I can't build missionaries of my own, am I supposed to surround my cities with apostles or something

If you can find an area that's 1/3 hills, 1/3 river, and 1/3 desert/tundra, you'd be set. You've got production, enough food and housing in way of farms to get you through the first half of the game, and enough blank spaces to fill with districts.

Group cities into 4's or 5's, and put all of your industrial districts in the middle of the group so they get each other's production bonuses late-game.

Each type of luxury resource you have gives 4 amenities to be spread out between your cities (say if you have 3 foxes, only 1 gives you amenities, the other 2 are just for trade). So if you settle a lot of cities but they don't bring in new/different luxury resources, it's going to hurt you really bad in the long run amenities-wise. Sometimes you can just trade other civs for more amenities if you have lots of duplicates and/or lots of money

Cities are vulnerable before walls. It's not a balance issue, because you could have taken advantage of it just like Monty did. It's just a design decision. Keep it in mind during your next game.

What kind of things the devs can add in an early patch to improve/balance/tweak the game? I agree with most of you that the game has mild to serious flaws, but 99% of them can be fixed with mods/patches. And it's CERTAINLY better than most civs at launch.

Real answers encouraged, however I will also accept meme answers.
>>
>>158781453
Not exactly an answer to your question, but i wish the game somehow accommodated small scale one/two city wars as opposed to the empire wiping all production wars that are prevalent
>>
>>158781717

I find it an interesting wrinkle to the early game. Historically, it makes sense. You are a small tribe with no walls. Barbarians and aggressive rival tribes would be your biggest threat.
>>
>>158764997
Any news on a patch?
>>
>>158781954
Yeah, but what good does it do for gameplay? I'm all for forcing people to build walls, escalation of hostilities and all that. Like in SP it's just a reroll which is neither here nor there, in MP you just removed a player and gained a meh city. It's one thing to take a 50 turns in capital, 10 turns in? What's the point.

>>158781850
Never gonna happen in civ, simply wrong core design for it. To make that happen you need to have players be small, like OPM's in gsg, which wouldn't make any sense in civ. City state wars sort of thing could be amusing, with everyone essencially playing with venice rules, but ultimately that's not what civ's good at.

When i ment small scall i ment large empires fighting a war where maybe only one or two cities change hands.

As it stands now, there really isn't any point to letting the loser have any cities, seeing that if you manage to take one, you have probably already squashed his army.

the one thing that would cause small wars is warmongering penalties, that only exist in single player and the AI doesn't like you anyways
>>
>>158782940
why not just make a permanent link
>>
>>158782993
Only if you revamp war system to gsg style, or if you make war weariness for taking cities extrimely penalizing. Don't think either's a good idea for civ. War is too shit alrea simply because how boring and clickfesty it gets

>>158783896

Mind linking some official annoucement or something?

Firaxis could at least fix that annoying bug with mods, forcing people to reload files twice every time they start the game.

That's pretty far down the tech tree, and this was only early Medieval period. Territorial expansion is also implied to be an offensive casus belli when you want that sweet sweet Lebensraum.

I'd want a defensive version of that, because right now it seems to be the only way to stop forward settling like this is to just wait around for the aggressor to settle and start a war on their own terms, which isn't particularly fair when they're the one encroaching on your territory. Even if you kick them out you still get massive penalties for razing or otherwise taking back the land their settlers took.

There should be a "Roleplay" mode for Civ games that make the leaders act like rational people instead of number-crunching robot sociopaths. I know what is what they are and I know that winning is the point of the game, but it has always frustrated me that there is no real way to be on good terms with the people you live around. They are either enemies who hate you to your face or "friends" who intended to backstab you from the start.

Amenities are the new luxes, you need more and more amenities as your cities grow taller. One amenity spreads to up to 4 cities (6 if you are Aztec) and they somehow get distributed automatically to lowest amenity cities you have. This means that there's really no penalty for settling wide as long as you find an amenity or two once per 4 cities. It should be noted that additional copies of a lux resource don't give any extra amenities to more than 4 cities - even though Firaxis claimed otherwise pre-release - they are only for sale. The biggest growth blocker in the game is housing - unless you settle on fresh water your housing is gonna be shit and your cities will never grow. There are some minor bonuses to housing in the early to mid game, but first true boost comes late down the line with Urbanisation civic (Kongo gets them earlier, which makes them pretty good).
Some districts (or buildings you can build in them to be precise, like factories) do give you bonuses in a certain radius, some districts don't, it's usually mentioned in the description.

District costs scale with tech. Yes, not with the number of cities you settle, not with the number of districts you build, but with your tech and civic progress - the more developed you are the harder it is for your dudes to build those districts. You do get a 25% discount on a particular district if your civ has less than an average amount of that type though. Source for that info is on civ reddit, someone posted info from the game files there.
The most useful districts are the dosh districts and production districts, first gives you an extra caravan (and internal traderoutes are super important), second lets you build shit in less than 40 turns on standard. You can build more districts as your cities grow taller and if your civ has a unique district it can build that one for free, ignoring the population requirements. Also all unique districts only require 50% of the normal production cost.

>>158794959
Yeah, I think this game has a lot more potential but I'd rather play civ 5 as of the moment, in VI Civs declare war a lot more often but surrender after you kill like 3-5 of their units even though their total army power is at least 5x more powerful.
This game took my about 5 1/2 hours to complete in total, I played it straight too.
>>
>>158769368
desu stellaris is a really pretty game

>>
I really despise how wars in civ are all in all the time. You either maintain a token military, just enough to defend your border and only war to remove a settler, or you go full hitler and wage endless war an all fronts. No compromises, no exceptions. This leads to simcity gameplay becoming stale repetitive and all in all fucking chore. Or you essencially axe 1/2 of the game out and just see how quickly you can take all capitals.

Maybe I just should take a break from civ and finally go dive into distant worlds.

Ok so I signed peace (a shame - I wanted to end them now, they were down to the capital as I razed everything else) and I still have -6 amenities from war weariness. This was some 4 turns ago. There's a revolt in my city because of that.

I don't like the current religious system.

I feel forced to either start my own religion and compete against the AI or conquer the religion spreading fastest to nip the AI religious victory in the bud, which itself inevitably leads to war with every other civ and a domination victory.

I just wanna build my mars colony in peace, dammit.
>>
>>158806337
You can purchase tiles
Purchase them around a unit, and they can't move it
>>
>>158806790
just build inquisitors and they can't win because your inquisitors cost a fraction of the price of apostles and get a massive bonus in your territory

even a dozen dirty kebab salesmen can be beaten by some good catholic inquisitors, and they seem to dumb to deal with it too, like they just don't expect the inquisitors you just killed their last 6 apostles with to still be waiting around

>>
>>158807980

Adjacency bonuses are instant.
>>
>>158806790
Honestly, just win culturally or thru science.
Defending your own lands while going for one of the win conditions is way easier since the AI knows jackshit about actually taking cities...
Feels like the AI can't ever win through religions too, some other AI will always have a religion that is just as big and will inevitably clash with it
>>

>>
>>158806790

>>
>>158808207

Science most definitely should be every cities focus unless it cant get a bonus. Depending on your city. The industrial is important for most since it equals more production. Though commercial/Harbor/encampment/Holy site/threater all have various levels of importance depending on your civ.
>>
what 4x games have a decent military ai? everyone i play can be destroyed pretty easily, and the ones that can't just "cheat" and get a bunch of extra resources or promotions or w/e. i'm looking for one that can actually understand when to use which units, terrain, etc
>>
>>158808358

No, adjacency bonuses are instant.
When I build a lavra as Russia, even if no works there, it produces 6-7 faith instantly if I have the +faith tundra bonus. Workers are +2 in whatever their speciality is and those come from having the buildings there.

I think I am going to get Rising Tide for BE. I really like Civ 6 compared to 5 but without mods I'm kind of burnt out on it, and I have a strong itch to shape my people into either robo or bug mens.

>>
What does it mean when a building in Civ6 says it adds a citizen slot?
>>
>>158810053
specialist slot, meaning you can use a citizen to work the district for 2 yields of what ever kind of district it is
>>
>>158809772
The issue isn't creating it, the issue is that it'd make your PC catch fire. 4x games are taxing enough as it is with the 80 fucktillion things going on at the same time. If you also threw in dozens of AI that actually think properly and try to predict shit, you'd have to either try to run that shit on the Tianhe-2 or be content with playing at 2 frames per second.
>>
>>158810053
It means it adds a slot that a citizen of that city can work for their respective bonus, like a specialist slot in Civ 5.

And, more importantly, my fleet of Skullfucker-class battleships are geared up with the best tech in the game and a single one is capable of taking on an average-sized empire's entire fleet and winning. And I've got way more than one. Why should I have to obey treaties? I've got an army so powerful I could take on god himself. Which is what I was sort of hoping to do with the space whales. They should have just made it like in CK2 where you can just screw treaties, but it makes everyone think you're a twat. That'd make more sense.

Resource jewery. He eventually caught on that I was scamming the hell out of him and refuses to do further deals (and he also dislikes that I dare have authority over a city state as well as the fact I'm pals with King Nig, but that's aside the point), but as you can see I already made good use of the money I got beforehand.
>>
>>158812043
Honestly I'm going to say you don't need to take any of the + faith religious bonuses. Take something that will help your cities. Fukc Civ 6. I fuckin quit.
It's painfully obvious the game just fucking teleports barbarians onto your units to fuck with you.

I just waited 20 turns for Peter to give me an Open Borders agreement so I could scout his continent, because the only way onto it from my civ was through a narrow landbridge he had 2 cities on.

I get my agreement. I send my 4 scouts that've been waiting at his borders right on through.
FUCKING BARBARIANS ARE CRAWLING ALL OVER THE PLACE WITHIN 2-3 TILES OF HIS TWO CITIES.
THEY FUCKING RUSH MY SCOUTS AND INSTANTLY KILL THEM.

And in that same fucking game, the first scout I made left my city, entered some Rainforest, ran RIGHT into a barbarian scout and spearman, and fucking died immediately.

Same for my first two Galleys. They each got one turn out of my coastal city, in opposite directions, and immediately ran into barbarian ships that instantly killed them.

Every single motherfucking game of Civ 6 I've played so far, the barbarians have done this shit. I have never, ever, ever had an enemy civ cause me as many problems as fucking barbarians do in Civ 6. Holy fuck the AI is stupid as fuck on all difficulties, but the fact that they let barbarian camps shit out 3 units the turn after your units approach them, and then instantly slaughter your units, is too fucking much.

There is not fucking "get good" when even a fucking phalanx of 3 swordsmen with an archer in their midst can get wiped out by one bad random barbarian spawn.

Literally fuckin happened to me in my last game. I was at war with Kongo and marching those 4 units across no-mans-land and a barb camp between our nations in the fog of war had spawned a bunch of horsemen and other shit and they ambushed my group of units from the side.

I killed all of their units and in the end was left with 2 swordsmen under 50% hp. Which then got rushed by Kongo's cavalry and finished off.

That barb camp had a spearman sitting in it. When I brought my units within 3 tiles it fucking spawned a small army and destroyed 10 turns worth of production from 4 cities for me,

>>158817460
They hardly seem like it. I've never seen them lose a bunch of units to an ambush. I've never seen them approach a barb camp only to have 2 horsemen spawn on either side of the capturing unit and kill it before it can capture. When I entered Russia's territory this game all those fucking barbarians were doing NOTHING to him. No pillaging, he had a trade route running, no siege. They were just chilling in his territory.
>>
>>158817393
I beat them only because I had almost finished building my own army of warriors to go conquer Rome, combined with terrain and defender advantage and the AI being dumb as shit

Given that the Prethoryn Scourge make entire swathes of the galaxy uninhabitable, is it a wise course of action to cause an intentional Crisis by researching dangerous technology?

If so, which of the two remaining Crises (a Robot Uprising or an Unbidden Invasion) is easier to deal with?

Keep in mind that I don't use robots, myself.

but whats the point?

gameplay is exactly the same, no?
you just cycle through cities making stuff, its tedious. i dont see how rome 2 isnt superior to this game in almost every way.

diplomacy feels completely flat
the units are dog shit and clunky
the UI is non existant
i cant understand what the fucking indian guy is saying and why is he wearing bath towels
it took me 6 hours to realize i can automate workers

and honestly the worst part is late game where you jsut have a million units doing fuck all. and city sieging is dog shit

It's not that it's shit thing to say, it's that its a shit quote. Quotes are supposed to be interesting. Some guy snarking is not interesting, it's trivial and boring. Altho I guess that would make it feel at home in 6.

Air units work out of something that houses air units (aerodromes, airstrips, carriers) Every turn you can pick the planes to liberate the shit out of something (bombers), or order them to defend an area from being freedom'd by other air units (fighters) depending on the type of aircraft. Anti-air basically functions as just as an area defense against any air units that try attacking the area around the unit.

If you want to spend your hard earned money for a half assed beta release, sure. I don't think it's currently worth it. There are gamebreaking bugs (like getting infinite money from other civs on the trade screen), extremely dodgy mechanics (like abusing chop chop with the builders), questionable decisions (production costs constantly going up which result in them skyrocketing in the late game). It's a typical Firaxis "it's only a complete game after 250$ worth of DLC" move.
