Absolutely. Though I feel it's a little too optimistic to represent the actual ending itself. Maybe more so say, 3 months down the line. When they're really ready to leave the past where it belongs. For the actual ending I think Tom Waits is our man. Wistful, restrained, crestfallen, but still ever so subtlety hopeful. And every bit as American Springsteen.

For sure. I actually think I like when the song is used the first time more. It was the first time I fully understood how amazing LiS was going to be. But there was no better song choice for Max and Chloe's send off. It really puts into perceptive how far they, and you, have come.

I must agree, not least because the endings are a trainwreck in more than one regard. But more than whether I like its use the first or second time around better, I actually think the fact that they did bring it back is the most important part: End of Episode 1 - Max and Chloe on the cliff, reunited, together, holding on to each other, confiding in one another, Obstacles playing "throughout the town"; End of Episode 5 - Max and Chloe on the cliff, committed, in love, prevailing, entangled in one another in most of every sense, Obstacles playing them "out of the town".

The ultimate, truest foreshadowing. Even the meaning of the song and its tone changes accordingly between the points, interpretively. As you say, highlighting how far they've come - the lessons they've learned, realizations they've come to. Quite a brilliant fit indeed.

That said, her in-game face as depicted in the photos does have a masculine wideness to it. Native American cheekbones and all. :v)

But obviously that artist has a more specific idea of her that doesn't necessarily agree with in-game Rachel, visually and otherwise. (And in the photo with Frank, Rachel actually looks so cute that people thought she was Max!)

Honestly I never understood the Rachel obsession some fangirls have in the fandom. I mean, she has value to the narrative and she's certainly pretty... but she's just not a character at all. There's so many rich characters in the game, and Rachel practically (and literally) doesn't even exist. Maybe she's their wet self-insert dream, her not-existing making it easy for them to project their own ideas (and selves) onto her.

That's Frank's jacket, the idea behind that drawing likely being to make her appear even more masculine that they usually do. She does have prominent features, so a defined jaw is possible.

There's not a whole lot Rachel art, but still way more than you'd expect for what is essentially a "non-character" (for example, I wouldn't be surprised if there's more Rachel art than for all actual side-characters combined - it sure seems that way).

Even though we never got to meet or even hear Rachel, I just wanted to know more about her.
Everyone has their own opinion of who she was and if she was good/bad. Personally, I think she was a very nice person who made some very big mistakes and paid for it dearly (Or deerly). She's a big part of the story but her history is unknown- just the fact she is playing some guiding force for Max and Chloe, perhaps to try to atone for her screw ups.
Maybe there is some timeline where Max saved her and Rachel got to be honest with Chloe.

I also have my own ideas and interpretations of Rachel, her value for the narrative and characters.

And I mean, I get what the appeal is with her too. Obviously people are interested in this person that at the least seemed to be integral to it all, mysterious and hard to "catch" - both in words and actuality.

So the "fascination" with her as a part of the narrative, having wanted to meet her, "understand her" - that all is obvious. But the obsession with her as a character; the fanfiction and fanart, the characterizations, headcanons, developing a character that ultimately has nothing to do with the game itself or its narrative, "loving" this character as much as actual characters - that's weird to me.

I think Victoria would need to go into isolation for a little while and think about her own life. What she wants out of it and who she wants to be seen as.
After that time she may reach out to those she trusts such as Taylor, Max, or even Kate and find a way to apologize. From that point on she can just work on being herself, not creating some persona based on superiority and crushing any perceived competition. Her almost dying by the hands of a man she admired would surely be a huge wakeup call.
I can see Victoria becoming friends with Max, and very good friends with Kate, perhaps even civil with Chloe. As long as Chloe holds up her end, which she will out of respect for Max.

The caravan arrived at Kate’s apartment. The complex modest but well maintained, just like Kate.

"Chloe we’re here.” No response. “Chloe?” Max killed the engine and could hear the soft, steady breathing from the back of the car. Both women were asleep. “Chloeeee wakeee upppp” Max crooned.

“Yeah? Oh, hey. What?” Chloe looked down at the head on her lap. “Right, escorting the fallen angel, right.”

“Keys Chloe, keys. And uh, apartment number”
“Kate… Kate… KATE” Chloe started softly but finished anything but. Kate was out. “Have to do everything myself” Chloe rooted around once again in Kate’s pockets, while Max looked away politely.

“Mmmm” came a small pleasured noise came from Kate.

“Hey, Hey! I just need your damn key.” Chloe said slightly embarrassed. Max couldn't help but giggle. Chloe being uncomfortable was an uncommon occurrence.

I have to agree. It's like the game tells us she's an interesting person, but we never actually experience it. She has a good GPA but also dates a drug dealer. Everyone loved her, she even let Daniel sketch her. She did a blood pact with Frank, but also wanted to leave Arcadia Bay without him, to be a model of all things. With nothing to tie all of this information together she just sounds like whatever the plot needed her to be, or whatever sounded best at the time. It's like you said, people just project what they want to onto Rachel. Not that there's anything wrong with that (It's little weird though). In fact, from a narrative perspective it works rather well, even if it's a little lazy. I still maintain that Max should have meet Rachel in Polarized, instead of her 'evil' self. Even if it wasn't literally Rachel, just the manifestation of Max's idea of Rachel, it would still have been far more satisfying than the 'I'm my own worst enemy' trope. Even if Rachel was antagonizing Max it would still work by having Chloe step in and be like, "I don't know what you are, but you aren't my Rachel. Now get the fuck away from my Max." It's possible that was the original plan, but budgetary and time constraints meant they couldn't afford to hire a new voice actor. But that's just speculation.

Rachel is like a reimagining of Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks, so I suppose part of the love for her might just be a meta appreciation for her role as MacGuffin.

After a brief debate over who would haul Kate, Chloe once again slung the sleeping woman over her shoulder and marched up the steps behind Max. “Nice place she’s got here. Maybe I should start illustrating children’s books for a living.” Chloe said in a strained tone.

“The goal is not to terrify and scar the children” Max said, while fighting with the lock.

“Character building, Max, character building”. Chloe was now obviously straining under the load, even though she was trying not to show it.

I'm actually pretty interested in where this is going. This characterization of Kate is original and has potential as long as she's not going through tons of problems.

But yeah I think Kate is usually seen as a very one dimensional character. In this universe Kate is not going though tons of problems, things are actually very good. She just has a lot of things in her past that haunt her. (like the town being destroyed) and has been staying away from Chloe and Kate because they remind her of the town, the dark room, the suicide attempt, and tornado. Earlier on in the story Max had the same realization about why she and Chloe hadn't kept well in touch with Kate.

Game three is tomorrow so probably no more for a while but who knows.

I'm sure what happened that week would have a big effect on Kate. Just because she steps down from the roof does not undo the trauma she went through, the betrayal she felt by people she thought were her friends, and her art teacher being a serial criminal/ killer.

I know. Every character has problems, so does every person in the world, identifying them is fine as long as you also show how they grow and overcome them.
That was one of my biggest gripes with the ending. The game stops before we see any healing from anyone other than Chloe. I really do think there should have been a final cutscene or playable sequence that was a timeskip. One last chance to talk to the characters and look over the environment to see changes.

While I agree that meeting Rachel in the nightmare should have happened, I think the "I'm my own worst enemy" sentiment of that entire thing was narratively very important. In the end, Max had to overcome herself as the final obstacle.

That said, it really is kind of cheesy to literally use herself for that. They could have still had EvilMax be Rachel and the message would have allegorically held up. Not least because Rachel very much was someone Max at times compared herself against, felt inadequate - even with regards to her relationship with Chloe. So both her own doubts and insecurities as well as those pertaining to the relationship with Chloe would have been still clearly laid out and overcome in that sequence. And it would have given the nightmare and entire episode a lot more quality and satisfaction value, as you say. Also would have given more (or less) substance to a bunch of theories involving Rachel.

As for the potential VA issues: They could have even had Hannah do Rachel's voice - fitting and trippy. Or even trippier - all the VAs combined speaking her lines. Arguably even more fitting, too; For Max, in that scene particularly, the people she'd met and interacted with throughout the week embody the doubt and guilt she feels, so them joining voices and manifesting as the ultimate mouthpiece for her blaming and doubting herself would have worked. Overcoming all that, which is herself (and maybe Rachel too, to an extent or another).

Yes, but I'm not sure it have had to be represented literally. It's woven into the narrative explicitly. To the point where I don't think It ever need to be addressed. At the start of the game Max tears up her entry into the everyday hero's contest. By the end she hands it in confidently, saying, "maybe only one of us will be going to San Fransisco". This line is half way a veiled 'fuck you' to Jefferson, but also a display of Max overcoming her fears. Max overcomes herself allegorically, we didn't need to see it literally.

Not just Max but the game itself even makes this comparison several times. Joyce asks if Max is jealous of Rachel, no matter what you reply it comes across as a yes. Chloe will have either Max or Rachel as her phone background depending on how you played the game. I mean they make you wear her outfit for an entire episode, doesn't get anymore blunt than that.

Like I said, I think the 'Max vs Max' concept had already run its course. It didn't need to be addressed. A 'Max vs Rachel (or a more evil Rachel)' would have been a far better use of resources.

Risky. It could have come across as cheesy if it wasn't handled right. As for Hannah doing Rachel's voice. No. As much as I love Hannah I don't think she could pull off having a conversation with herself. I would have preferred Max having a conversation with the worst and best aspects of everyone she knows. For example, sitting across from her is Joyce. She tells Max that she hates her for abandoning her and Chloe after William died. Sitting next to Max, is also Joyce. She tells Max that she never held anything against her. That she thinks of Max like a daughter.

Exactly, the "EvilMax" wouldn't have had to literally be herself. But I do think the nightmare touching on that (and everything, really) in a compressed sense was what they'd gone for with that, and it is important to my understanding of the narrative that she does in the end very explicitly see that she is battling, above all, herself. But again, I agree a Rachel would have fit there without compromising any of that.

Yep, that was one of the more apparent functions Rachel had for the narrative: making Max question herself. That's why overcoming in the nightmare not only herself, but "Rachel" through that would have worked just as well.

Aside from the nightmare compressing the entire week's narrative intention and experience into one more-or-less obvious sequence of allegory, I still think it was important to have Max "confront herself" in a very tangible sense before the final choice. I do think that would have been allgorically equally as obvious with Rachel as EvilMax though (be that as a figment of her mind, representation of those parts of it, or theoretically even as a more malevolent entity itself - these are not mutually exclusive either, just like the nightmare altogether felt both like an actual dream, but also like something more than that; something Rachel might have played a part in inducing/influencing more actively).

So you think the conversation she did have with herself there did not work? Well, I don't necessarily think it did too well either, but it's also not like this was ever a sore thumb in anybody's mind. The exact things said and nature of that conversation - maybe. But I have never seen anybody say that the Max-EvilMax dialogue did not work conversationally, i. e. in terms of the authenticity of the back-and-forth and tone and stuff.

I think a lot of the time the devs went with what felt right at the time and not what would fit better in the larger context of the game. Like I've said before with the Kate time freeze. Sure it looks cool and felt right at the time, but it doesn't really make sense in the larger context of the game. There's more examples but I don't wanna hit the word limit again.

Sorry I should have specified. I don't think Hannah could do two different characters speaking to one another. Like if she was trying to make Rachel sound distinct from Max in some way. Is that not what you were saying? Or did you mean that Rachel would literally sound just like Max. Because I think that would have taken me out of the experience. I think the back in fourth between the two Max's worked pretty well actually.

That would have been my ideal ending. First the thing I said with Max talking to the Good/Evil versions of everyone she knows. Finally ending with Rachel. Evil Rachel says that Max will never be half the woman she was, that Chloe will never love her as much, she'll never be as talented, pretty, smart ect. Then the good Rachel appears next to Max. Tells Max that shes proud of her, that she's so happy that Max and Chloe found each other, that even though they had never met before now she loved her. Then Rachel would hug Max. Max would hug her back a break down a little, the stress of the week taking it's toll. As Chloe walks into the diner Rachel disappears, leaving her feather earing in Max's hand. Something like that anyway.

Pretty much. I don't think I can say whether that would have alienated me more than felt in-line with the weirdness they aimed for in the nightmare. It would have definitely fit in with what I think they used the nightmare for, and what I like about it. But that's a conceptional thing - the experience of that could indeed be weird enough to take one out of it.

I was only throwing ideas around myself though, obviously. I was mostly responding to your speculation that they had budgetary VA issues and that's why they didn't use Rachel in the nightmare. I think there would have been solutions for that (not least just using someone random for the few lines she would have).

But I do also think they'd actually wanted to show Rachel in the nightmare. Not sure why they didn't. Decided against it maybe on a whim? To keep mystique? Maybe to even keep cards to themselves they could play on for a second season?

I can see it. Above all I agree that Rachel's role in it all as something more than a narrative device should have been explored, and the nightmare was predestined for it.

It would take more than one word limit to go into what I would wish for her role to be exactly, and how they could have explored that, but as is I'm just glad we agree it's weird what parts of the fandom do with her now that she really unfortunately is a "non-character" in a very literal sense.

That's a really good point actually. You can even trigger a fourth wall break moments before this scene happens. Personally, for a character (or non character as it were) as central to the narrative like Rachel, I think they'd have needed a new talented voice actor, some random wouldn't do. After all you could always argue that it wasn't literally her, just Max's idea of her.

True. They wouldn't have given away too much at all. If any-thing. Which - you are right - does make it less likely they'd been thinking of potential Rachel stuff in a sequel that they'd write themselves into a corner of not being able to do. They could always just say "'Twas but a dream!" and that's that.

The "Why?" might just be what you say - they felt it right not to show her, be it to be subversive, edgy, mysterious or whatever and went with that. From what we know, the entire nightmare ordeal was a conceptual story point - the actual fleshing-out of it however something they did only later, and from interviews we knew they had been throwing around all kinds of ideas. We also know that there is Rachel text in the files somewhere, read by a robot voice or something. So that was definitely on the table at some point.

I think they just wanted to keep people wondering and guessing more. While it is a dream, obviously having Rachel play an active role in it all would reflect to a degree on their intentions with her. So even if they wouldn't have strictly negated any of that with a figmented Rachel, it would still lead to less people being compelled to "figure her out".

Dunno, I guess we can only hope she does play an active role in Season 2. Because while I find it weird to be overly interested in her as a character now, I could definitely see myself being interested then.

I want to hear more people try to give a voice to Rachel. I do like this one.
Meeting her in some way, even if it was just Max projecting and creating her own vision of her, would have been very interesting. Or to have the ghost doe actually morph into an apparition of Rachel and talk to Max at some point in the nightmare. Like Max is getting bullied by Nightmare!Max, Rachel shows up and talks a little bit about how everything she heard about Max from Chloe was glowing praise, and then finally the vision of Chloe shows up.
Rachel brings Max to the final walk (The Pricefield Museum) and tell her "Max, time to embrace yours and Chloe's fate" or something as she offers one final apology and says she was glad they got to finally meet.

You could also replace "fate" with "destiny" since it sounds a little better IMO. To say that Max and Chloe were always destined to be together.
Of course you wouldn't even need to confirm if it really was Rachel or just an idea Max's mind created. The idea is to present it and let the player decide what the believe. Maybe even make it an option to mention it (Or don't) to Chloe when Max wakes up from the nightmare.

I looked at every thing in her room, I listened to everything she said, I took every pro-Kate choice you possibly could, including taking the call while Chloe is getting mad at you, and she still jumped on me before I could even get to the bible verse and sisters part

The smoothing on how she reacts to different past actions was a bit off, so you'd repeatedly see her say stuff like 'wow Max, you really care about me' and start to step down, and then immediately she's angry again

Does anyone else really like Nathan? At first I hated him because he shot Chloe and all, but when you realize he is being used and manipulated in ep4, he becomes probably the most relatable character for me.
