In an interview one of the guys said that what will probably happen is Ajna will journey a certain route in the beginning, and then at some point the routes will branch out when she reaches a port-town/crossroads.

So my bet is that the scripted route is the top row, with Dhar up to the prototype crew, and then everything after that is part of the branching paths.

I really don't like how Leviathan just sprouts arms for Squigly's level 3. Unless there's other frames with the arms and I'm missing them.

I've never heard people say SG doesn't do anything new. Most people I've talked to say it's the resets that put them off the game. They don't like it because that's too different.

Funny though, because I feel the emphasis on resets is what makes SG the only game that gets long combos right. In Marvel, other anime games, etc, I feel like there's no point in having these long BnBs if there's not much reason to mix them up and nothing for the defender to stay on guard for the whole time.

Ultimately, no game can appeal to everyone, and that's okay. Better for Mike to follow his own vision and see who else likes it, then try to bend over backwards to appease people who will likely still find an excuse to ignore it and go back to playing Capcom's latest turd.

I don't agree with this. On other games combos are either shorter on average OR as long --IF-- you get a big heavy optimal starter and have meter to spend.

Super jumps were already a thing, he just tried making them go a lot higher. The problem with that was it was way too late to change this, doing so broke almost every existing combo and would've forced everyone to relearn everything.

Personally I enjoy Alex's sketchy quality in that cover, and the look of the characters. The only face I'd really consider changing is Beowulf's, since he looks surprisingly calm, but it doesn't bother me much.

Overall I appreciate the handmade look he always brings to those chunky lines, which can be tricky to do in digital work. Yeah, sometimes Alex's loose style can get overboard, like in some of the more rushed storymode panels, but I think it's fine for the new cover.

In general, I feel his SG splash art usually comes off like a live band's performance. Some finer details have a tendency to shift, but thanks to the artist's familiarity with the work, the character of the art never feels lost. For pieces like this, it's like you're seeing a page from Alex's sketchbook come to life for a second, which I think reflects his personal and almost "casual"connection to the cast. That doesn't mean I love all of his SG pieces, but it always looks like he's having fun with it.

Now if that were the style used for an Indivisible cover, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. Alex's style always looks right at home with Skullgirls, but I think Mariel's approach seems to fit the other game better. Hopefully they strike the right balance when they work on more splash art for it.

Skullgirls isn't as active as other fighting games. No one is denying this.
But it is not a dead game. The people who play it are extremely dedicated to the game and have fun playing it. Is that not what matters?
It's a game in a niche genre made by a smaller company. No shit it's slow compared to titans like Street Fighter.

Most games don't have an active scene after a few years. Skullgirls will be slow at times but overall it's still alive and well.

I talked about this with someone before, but Skullgirls is kinda like a trojan horse in regards to player numbers.

The game is owned by over 800k people, is still rated positively despite the competition, and has appealed a lot of people outside of the FGC. Really, a good chunk of these people have just been waiting for some excuse to give it more than 1-10 hours of playtime over the nearest FPS/MOBA/AAA-multiplayer title they're already grinding on.
So I think with the right push, the avg player numbers for SG across the board could almost double over night, kinda like they already do on Steam during sale periods.
We're not talking SF numbers, of course, but certainly enough increase to firmly establish its "not-dead" status next to other FGs.

But what kind of push would that take? Would it be a SG2 announcement? A group of popular players from other games taking it seriously? The "death" of SFV? The Lobby Patch boosting console numbers? Who knows. It definitely won't be the "FGC Proper" that will ultimately decide the game's legacy though. It's mostly gonna be the players that just enjoy Skullgirls for Skullgirls.

The number of pre-orders they need to get the JP Voice licensing,
is actually far less than the number of Upgrades we'd need to fund the next stretch goal.

And that's with each Backer paying less to upgrade than the cost of the SG Physical version.

Skullgirls doesn't have that. There's nothing to keep newbies and shitters grinding it out except to just git gud. If Skullgirls had some kind of skinner box element that encourages you to keep palying for more exp or currency, people would still play after they've beaten the arcade mod once or twice.

Not everyone is super competitive. They could add in exp or currency after beating easy CPUs which you can use to unlock concept art, more skins, more characters, icons/emotes, etc. In SG you beat the game a few times and there's nothing left to unlock. Most people pick it up because of the art style/waifus.

In LoL and Paladins and CS GO you get loot boxes and currency and shit that you can use to spend on costumes or roll for a good drop. You can't just play it once on hard and then unlock everything all up front. It forces you to keep playing.

With SG, the only ones who stick around are the super competitive ones that do everything they can to git gud. When you put those people up against shitters/casuals, there's absolutely nothing in it for those newbies, they just go online to get slapped around. You don't even get any exp or currency from it. You basically go online to get abused because you're a masochist. You have to live and breathe Skullgirls if you want to pose any threat to anyone. there's no 'intermediate' between two opponents. It's just a winner and loser, someone better and someone who sucks. With LoL and other games, the fact that you can blame your team for losing makes it easier to accept a loss. In SG or any other fighting game there is no excuse, so you feel even worse after a fight.

SG needs more unlockable stuff and some kind of skinner box. Even SFV has 'fight money'. If SFV wasn't an Early Access game it would be gud.

I'm curious how Thems Fightin Herd's approach to storymode/lobbies/tutorials will work in this regard, since they're going to rely on those types of extra features more to succeed with their smaller roster and budget. And like you said, this is just a challenge with the whole genre. People are playing team based games that are more popular and grinding their time out there. Back in the day, this was time that gamers used to be spending on fighting games, racing games, or other score based arcade games instead. The reason games like Smash, MK and SF have attracted more Casuals despite this isn't really because they're easier at high level, like some people want to believe, it's that their level of popularity gives them a steady stream of beginners, which become a cushion for other new players to ease their way into the flow of the game. These players also get quicker access to resources that help them improve, because there's content flowing everywhere. If you're sucking at Smash4, you have a 100 highly viewed YT videos telling you what you're doing wrong.

Games like SG can't do this, so a new player has to adopt an old arcade mindset. Like you said, they have to find the drive to improve, connect with other players directly, join groups, and see their losses as a step forward. This was easier for kids in the arcade days because the entire gaming environment demanded it, but it's harder to expect people to have that mindset today when there are so many other games to play.

Basically, the Blood Gem serves as an "extension" to the human body. Apart from granting the being an infinite supply of blood, the body ignores any and all of its dismemberments and wounds and continues to behave like a normal body (need to eat/drink, going to the bathroom, etc). I wouldn't have played Soul Calibur 2 past Link in a few matches if it weren't for the Weapon Master mode and being able to unlock costumes and new weapons. I played long enough to try out the other characters and actually enjoy them. If it weren't for unlocking things I would have only played Link a couple times and then go back to Smash Bros. Melee.

I ended buying the Xbox and Playstation 2 versions as well as both SC3 because of how much I enjoyed that game. Never got competitive or serious or played online. I played against my friends only for a few matches on a weekend, and nothing after that. The rest of the time was all solo.

What you don't realize is that not everyone plays fighting games to git gud and esports. Shitters like me only pick up the game because it had an interesting cover or interesting characters, or cool animations. Legend of Zelda is the reason why I picked it up, but the progression system and 'leveling up' is what kept me playing. Without that progression system I would never have met and waifued Sofitia, Talim, or Necrid.

Right now I have to make up mini games to keep it fun. Like not using throws or supers at all in arcade mode. It would be easier to keep grinding if I had more things to do. I don't have good internet so playing online is not an option. So gitting gud is pointless for me right now. Since no one else I know irl nearby plays it.

It's also why games like Overwatch never get old. Even playing bot matches with bad internet connection, you can still earn exp and unlock loot boxes in a relatively short amount of time. Fighting games are so hard to get into as is, we should be trying to make it easier for shitters to stick with it.

Let's brainstorm some fun and innovative ideas for Skullgirls.

I think Cerebella's ground throw should be changed into something so it isn't the worst ground throw in the game.

I also think Cerebella should be able to glide after a double jump.

I also think Diamond Dynamo should launch the opponent upwards on the final hit, so you can combo off of it midscreen without any assists.

I also think Kanchou should be safe on block.

I also think if Cerebella holds forward during the superflash of Ultimate Showstopper it should combine the properties of Ultimate Showstopper with Titan Knuckle, that is a larger reach and zero hitstop.

Big Band should be able to simultaneously parry and block, but only for projectiles. For balance purposes.
Neither Take the A-Train nor Brass Knuckle slow down when the armor activates.
Brass Knuckle now pierces assists instead of stopping short at them.
All versions of Cymbal Clash now have armor.
Taunted Super Sonic Jazz is safe on block.
Taunt is faster.
Airthrow has an extended horizontal hitbox.
jMK now allows Big Band to slightly control his movement during the hover.
The multihitting part of cLP does not apply damage scaling.

I'm all for Mike trying out those big superjumps/launch heights again if he ever does SG2.
not only do I think it would be cool to occupy more vertical space in matches, but it might also address some people's frustrations with long restand combos.

since many air-to-ground restand strings would probably require more buttons in the air, they'd bring those combos closer to triggering IPS on relaunch.
so most restand strings would probably need to lead to a mixup afterwards, and not be as useful for just extending combos.

for example: Bella jMP->jHK->Restand probably wouldn't work anymore since she'd be too high, so she'd have to use up jLP or OTG earlier,
and Painwheel jMP->jHP->jHK probably wouldn't lead to a ground string/relaunch opportunity unless she also burned Unfly or Air Buer or something,
so those would heavily affect some of the combo routes we know and force them to be shorter due to IPS

so with combos from launcher becoming shorter for most characters, you'd probably see a bigger focus on ground strings, or air strings into earlier reset attempts. theoretically anyway.
I never got to play around enough with those superjumps in the beta version to see if that was really the case, but that's how it seemed to work.

it'd be a huge change though, and it might conflict with the design of some characters, making them less fun. so I'd be cool with whatever balancing Mike would decide to do.

I wonder if they'd consider making any unique shocked frames if they added more characters with electricity focused moves, like Leduc, Stanley, or Brain Drain?
Some of their attacks would probably look cool if it caused that effect.

The artists wouldn't need to draw more than the skeleton for those frames either, Just black out the sprite with palette effects and layer the skeleton frame on top with some particle gfx.
Apply that method to a couple of single frames of a characters' hitstuns and they'd probably have enough to work with. Could look cool.

Tournaments are run on console so a lot of em still own one, but PC has lobbies which are better for running online events..

Beowulf on paper still has his toolbox, plus the new chair jump, and he can spend and build hype multiple times even during combos.
I'm sure on Friday we'll still see the Beowulf players doing well. I think Mike will tweak him some more though.

Basically no one knew who was winning the vote since Lab Zero didn't give us details on how many people voted for which character to keep things fair, so people were just voting for their favorite characters. But then Peter mentioned something like Beowulf had a very good chance of winning.

At the time everyone was expecting it to be Annie or Minnette, and it would have been, until everyone who didn't want Annie OR Minnette to win decided they could team up and vote for Beowulf even if they didn't care about Beowulf. You have to realize that both the Annies and Minnettes were extremely toxic and obnoxious, not just to each other, but to everyone else. So it was basically a no-brainer to vote for other characters if it meant to shut them down. So while the Annie/Minnette war was taking place, everyone else created alliances against them. If the Annies and Minnettes actually teamed up, they could have gotten both their waifus into the game since both of them already outnumbered Beowulf and Eliza before Peter announced the results.

Just imagine Beowulf's status was still anonymous. Skullgirls might be a very different game than it is today. Eliza probably wouldn't have won either.

Now just multiply all of this by over 9000, spam it in /sgg/ (Skullgirls General, before it became /lzg/), /v/, Skullheart, and tumblr, add some bullying, and that's basically the atmosphere during the Skullgirls DLC character voting period. It was the great waifu war. Even the devs had to step in and try to cool things down because it was starting to get ugly. It was a bad time, after such a positive era with the whole Breast Cancer research fundraiser campaign and the Squigly unveal along with the Indiegogo.

It's not one of our proudest moments as a community, that's for sure. It was almost as bad as the Juju scandal.

If you're interested in a physical OST though, you'd better get (or upgrade, once we can do that) the Backer version.

I missed out on the one for SGs, but that's still the most complete PhysOST they ever released for it. They'll probably do the same for Indiv to make it special.

Most BackerKits I've used are set up like a storefront where you basically apply other items to your purchase.

I think that might be how LZ is doing theirs too, because they said they might add some other items to it like more poster options and maybe a Lanshi plushie.
