This has absolutely nothing to do with the popularity of the game though. Actually if you regularly see paid or high time investment content being used it tends to indicate a stagnant hardcore playerbase that doesn't attract newer or more casual players. Who the fuck cares? What you should worry about is that SFV is sufficiently disliked by potential players that it's handicapping all the investment being made into the scene to capitalize on the expected hype of a new game. It might not be losing money for Capcom but if it fails to live up to expectations they'll still shitcan it for making another goddamn Monster Hunter game or something. Tournament attendance and viewership might not be down, but they could have been much higher if Capcom just made a game people liked. If you look at that situation from the outside you have good reason to believe that you may not want to pick up the game.

The outright numbers for Guilty Gear might suck, but it's been a massive improvement to their situation and besides MikeZ throwing a fit pretty much everyone couldn't ask for much more from the game itself. The message is if you're interested, you likely won't be disappointed. That the base interest is so much lower is hard to do anything about without someone spending tons of money.

Discussion of "dead" games should really only be about shit like KoFXII where the game was complete crap and nobody wanted to keep playing it. Not for scenes that have survived for years.

Call me crazy, but I'd assume a "dead" game could not boast more daily average players than any of the most well-known titles in the genre on any platform, nor a consistent weekly stream presence, or a competitive scene that could pull numbers significant enough for a Sunday Top 8 at any point during the year. Nobody expected KoF14 to do well but GG and BB are doing just fine. As said earlier in the thread, they're improving their situation. I would say that's a lot better than a game still trying to shake off a bad reception. SFV is from a much more established franchise, it should be selling a lot better than it did.

And it's absolutely comparable to Tekken 7. Tekken and MK are the only other franchises with similar exposure and marketing budgets, and MK has no recent or upcoming offerings.

Casual players feed the competitive scene. Even though only a tiny portion of them ever try to get serious, that's still enormous to the competitive scene. That SFV isn't doing that says something about the competitive scene that it has.

In terms of animation quality, from best to worst SF game in this regard:

1) SFIII
2) SFV
3) SF Alpha series
4) SFII
5) SFIV
6) Fighting Street

SFV animations are a really good improvement over SFIV, but they still don't even reach SFIII greatness when it comes to animations. The amount of details given in SFIII animations is probably still unreached by any game in general, not just fighting games.

Even looking at apparently similar animations like Urien Chariot Tackle you can see how SFIII manages to make it look much more hard hitting than SFV does. There are some technical reasons why SFIII has such great animations. Overshoots, more respect to the laws explained in Richard Williams' Animator's Survival Kit, and generally much more effort in them.

This said, SFV still looks really good.

SFV characters are much more expressive and you have special animation states for some blocked attacks which makes it really nice.

V Dhalsim is pretty much pottery in motion too.

I believe SFV is better animated than 3.

I thought that was a nice idea as well, but it was too underdeveloped. Very few characters had those special blocked normals animations.

But even if said visual effect was more "popular" inside the game's roster, I would still say SFIII manages to have better animations in general, just for the way the characters are animated.

I feel like the artists working on SFV tried to overcome the stiffiness of the animations in SFIV adding jiggly physics to SFV in order to convey more motion, even if at a really big cost (common clipping issues).

Funny enough, I think the "funnier" characters in SFV are the ones that came out better than the "serious" ones like Alex or Urien.

Reliance on physics is definitely an issue with SFVs animation. It wouldve been better if they moved all hair and shit by hand.
They probably just wanted to show off with Necallis hair or something.

And while I do believe that most sillier characters do move better, you also have some really great animations on characters like Bison.
His v-trigger ex combos feel really good. I dont like his playstyle in V, but it felt nice to actually have some impact on his moves in this game.
Balrog is also amazing when it comes to this. The screen shaking on impact is a really nice touch.
