Can someone explain to me something about trade in EU4, please?
I only send light ships to protect trade in trade nodes where I have merchants in, both the ones where I steer trade, and the ones where I collect from trade.
Is that the right course of action? Or am I supposed to put light ships in other, adjacent trade nodes?

What happens if your allies declare war on one another in EU4? Did they stop you having to pick a side now? I remember that being quite annoying in Eu3

There is no rule of thumb for that as it always depends on multiple factors what strategy is the correct one.

The aim is to maximize the collection and you do that by maximizing your power in the collecting node and by maximizing the incoming trade to that node.

The less total power a trade node has the more each individual ship will matter so typically you want to spread them out at least a little bit especially when you already control a large% of the total in one particular node.

Look for places where the trade "leaks" by either getting collected by someone in the node or steered away from the node and try to plug those leaks as much as it's sensible to do. Nodes where you collect or right downstream from collecting nodes, nodes where you have low trade power %, nodes that are valuable and nodes where the total trade power is low are the ones you want to look for first.

I have three merchants, one collecting in Bordeaux, one collecting in Champagne, and one collecting in Genoa. My light ship navy is all protecting trade in Genoa.

So first of all if you collect in a province that is not your trade capital you will get hit by a big malus in your power making it worth it only in special circumstances.
Ideally you should have your trade capital in either one of the end nodes (channel, genoa and venice) or a node as close to them but where you have significant power.

Since you are France you either want to have Champagne act as your trading capital or move it to Channel or Genoa. In this case I think it would make a lot of sense to move the main trading port to Genoa, which eliminates the malus there allowing you to collect much more of the trade value that is getting sent there. Additionally you should instead of collecting steer the trade to where ever you are collecting, in this case for example it makes no sense to collect from both champagne and bordeaux.

If you want to you can save your game and experiment with different set ups either trying to steer as much to Champagne, Channel or Genoa but my bet is that Genoa would be your best choice seeing as you have pretty significant share of the power there already even with the malus that comes from collecting outside of your trade capital.

I would consider moving the trade cap to Genoa, switching the merchant in Champagne to steer to Genoa and collecting in Bordeaux since if you steer from there towards Champagne the brits will steal most of the value before it reaches Genoa.

You don't have to research trade capital. You are thinking of trade buildings which of course help with the trade power (build them in all of the provinces with bonuses like those centers of trade)

A trade capital is a button on the top of the province window next to "make this province your capital" go to Genoa and click it there. This will eliminate the malus you are currently getting in that node which you can see if you click it and hover over the modifiers.

With the third merchant you probably want to keep him in Bordeaux, you have good trade power there and you can collect large chunk of the trade that comes. If you move him to english channel even though the pie is bigger there you get a smaller slice. You can try to place him to the channel and see how it works out for you though, you can always just send him back if he makes less money.

And yes currently most of the value in champagne is moving towards the lowlands and bit towards Genoa. To get more money yourself you just need to increase your own power (buildings, ships, ideas and capturing provinces) or decrease theirs (privateering, embargoes, spies and capturing provinces)

Holland is the trade capital for English Channel trade node, right? Brabant has been my ally for most of the game, but they recently broke our alliance after losing a war with England. English channel is the most valuable trade node because France, England and Spain will tend to pump the resources of Asia around Africa and the New world straight to it. As a player you can just direct it to other nodes if you wish though.

How the FUCK do I stop Germany from just randomly declaring war on me?

I signed all pacts and treaties with them, took the "Anti Capitalist Diplomacy" focus in the focus tree, even improved relations with them whenever I had the political power to spend (they had like 90-100 opinion of me CONSTANTLY), yet they STILL randomly declared war one me.

What makes this even more bizarre is that we were both fighting against the allies. Germany in an offensive war to take Benelux, me in a war against Greece and the rest of the Allies, after Greece refused my ultimatum to cede the Aegan Islands.
And two weeks into my war the Germans just randomly declares and drag Italy and Japan with them.

How the FUCK do I prevent this from happening? I just want to have ONE comfy game where I crush capitalists, not where I have to fight the goddamn fascists AGAIN.

The events for corruption under 0.5 are so good.

When you are ahead of time on admin and diplo tech you get -0.05 corruption for each, espionage has an idea that gives -0.10, for positive stability you get -0.02 per stability and when your ruler has the trait that reduces corruption, and there is an event that gives you -0.10 corruption.

So if you stack some of those modifiers you can debase and melt away the corruption for free. In other times it is usually better to just take a loan.
