hello guys! i just downloaded victoria 2 and all the expansions. i was pretty excited since i heard that it is one of the most complex strategy games ever, with a phenomenal industry and economy mechanic.

i decided to start as albania and have a comfy isolationist game where i would just industrialize and reform my country.

however, i must have encountered some sort of bug. the only profitable type of industry is LIQUOR FACTORIES. i looked some guides and acted accordingly. i invested in input/output/throughput technology, encouraged capitalists and built railroads. i looked on the trade screen and took note of what is under heavy demand and what is not. i tried several different industries, arms, ammunition, clothes, glass. all of them failed. but the LIQUOR FACTORIES are the only ones that stay strong. i am not even that mad, this industry is invincible, keeps employed 20% of my population and keeps those taxes coming, but it seems too easy. all i have to do is build LIQUOR FACTORIES and upgrade them. any way to fix this rare bug?

Currently following up on an anon's advice to spend the remaining ~300 years tidying up borders and playing world police. Currently planning on grabbing the last few counties around the Normandy and Holland areas to release later as independent kings. I'll release the stranded counties in France and Burgundy and then try to have them united (the two, along with Bavaria and Lotharingia, are Karling brothers with claims on eachother so it shouldn't be too hard). Lotharingia is going to get those few sea counties it borders, Swabia will remain independent, and hopefully I'll be able to clean up those gross enclaves. I'll release Italy, Croatia, and Carinthia as well.

I thought it would be interesting to play the smallest and poorest state on the peninsula. After winning independence against the Papal State (allied with Burgundy) I joined the Empire and began to carve myself a chunk of Italy. Meanwhile Urbino has doubled in size and is comparable to Lucca, Pisa, etc.

Florence will be the next target. Any ideas for mid- or long-term goals? Is anyone interested in updates?

What army compositions should I have? I remember reading ages ago that you're supposed to have a small amount of cavalry and rest of your army should be infantry and artillery in equal numbers. Is that true?

How do I get better generals? I need higher military tradition to roll generals with higher stars, right? How do I get military tradition, just constantly fight battles? Should I hire away my armies as mercenaries for other nations and grind that way?

I've been building +tax, +manpower, and +force limit buildings everywhere. What do I build after that? Trade buildings around market centers, right? What about production, how does that work, I just build those buildings in high production provinces and provinces with rarer goods?

I'm playing croatia, did the decision that removed all the austrian and hungarian cores, got some colonies around yet two decades later they still attacked me with some "reunite the empire" casus belli that let them annex me in one. World map, in case anyone is curious enough to read it. My allies are Commonwealth, Spain, Brabant and Switzerland. Protestants won the war and now Hesse is the Emperor. My enemies, the ones who constantly rival me and hate me, are England, Austria, Ottomans, and Russia.

I'm planning on expanding further into Italy, taking all of Florence so the peninsula is split between me, Spain, and Pope. Then I'll move on to Austria, we fought a couple of wars since they lost the imperial title and I've been beating them pretty easily.

Outside of Europe, I'm planning on blobbing all over West Africa because that territory is supposed to be rich with gold, right? I'll try to take La Plata since no one colonized there and later on blob in the Pacific.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with how my first Ironman game has been going. Probably could have done a lot better, but at least I didn't get annexed by England and Burgundy.

Cavalry have a higher flanking range so some cavalry will do what infantry can't do.
For the majority of the game cavalry also deal more damage, but at a higher cost.

You can go higher in cav numbers, but I prefer going for just flank since it's much more cost effective.

Full flank early on is 4 cav. 2 on each side.
At mil tech 18 it's 6 cav. 3 on each side.

Ideally you want as much artillery as your combat width.
For every given moment in a fight you want as much infantry as your combat width, but the main job of the infantry is to die so you'll need more infantry than artillery. 150% infantry of the combat width for larger battles perhaps, for very large battles try to have infantry nearby that can reinforce.

Halve everything except for cavalry if you have a dedicated mountain army.

Remove 25% of everything except cavalry if you have a dedicated rough terrain army.

Force limit buildings are of very low priority.

Manufactories+Workshops in good trade goods provinces is better than temples.
If you're autistic about saving mana you may wnat to wait until universities before filling out your slots, so you can jam a university into a low development cloth tile.
So you get Manufactory+University, then Develop up to 10 and add a workshop.

Manpower buildings are of low priority as well, but not quite as low as force limits buildings.

I only got Exploration Ideas as my fourth group, so I'm lucky to get anything at all. I'm more disappointed in Spain. They've been allied with Portugal the entire game, and when I went to war with some shitty OPM, I saw Portugal was allied to them, so I called in Spain and the two started fighting each other. Portuguese colonies absolutely rolled over Spanish colonies, occupying almost all of them instantly. But since we occupied mainland Portugal they were defeated in the end.

Also, Scotland survived in Florida. Since their capital is in the new world and they're not a colonial nation, does this mean they're going to start blobbing there hard?

You can become emperor, but blobbing as a republic is a bit harder due to limited CBs. They get their mansions, ability to build trade posts in foreign lands, unique events, ability to hold various holdings without a penalty etc but they don't really get anything different later compared to feudal. But to answer your question, IF I ever decide the Vicky AFP is finished, then yeah, I'll probably move to something else. Hell, I will probably start a pack for another game well before I even finish with Vicky's pack.
