8 hours played on king, culture victory is in the bag barring unforseen happenings like the entire world attacking me at once. Thoughts thus far:

It's mostly better than double-expanded civ5 out of the box

Jesus why god am I refreshing so many spies and trade routes did they learn nothing from Beyond Earth I long for death

Attempting to go fairly tell is not the way to be. Not only am I having a really hard time holding all my great works (And everyone else's, thank you spies you are my greatest allies) I got done up the ass pretty hard on later strategic resources. No niter, no oil, cockblocked army upgrading and generally clunky shit

Still not entirely sure what's going on with the culture victory. It tells me more culture and more tourism is more gooderer but I'm not entirely sure what does what (If anything)

Fast movement and attack animations but not instant is fantastic

The focus on wide so much over tall is a real shame and may put me off in the long run. Admittedly there's a lot of work that you can put in to every single city so going wide gives you a lot of shit to do which isn't ENTIRELY just busywork, but still not completely my bag

Agendas seem to just piss off the entire world always. Surprisingly difficult to hold a semi-stable friend since everything you do is making someone somewhere angry

Overall enjoying it and like I said, feels better than current-civ5 right now but I also don't think it's going to end up being a 1 2 or 4 for me. I'll play a fair few games of it but it's not feeling like one that's going to completely grab me by the balls for months/years on end.

Why the FUCK doesn't the "lock mouse to window" option fucking work?

I always scroll the map by moving my cursor to the edge of the screen, but apparently this game doesn't want me to do that, since "Scroll when Mouse at Edge" was turned off by default, and the map doesn't scroll when you're hovering over the top menu bar even when it's turned on. Not that any of that fucking matters, because the "lock mouse to window" option is fucking broken, so I end up accidentally clicking somewhere on my second monitor and accidentally minimizing the game every 15 seconds. FUCK

How do you fuckers usually scroll the map? With the arrow keys? Click and drag? Both of those feel really awful.

I have no idea how International Tourism is calculated. I won a cultural victory in AD 1610 before I even got to Seaside Resorts and I never made a National Park (Kongo doesn't get enough faith), but my capital had something like 20 visiting tourists because it had 5 great works of writing in it.

The best thing I can tell is that both wonders and things that generate tourism generate visiting tourists slowly over time, but I have no idea how the numbers involved translate.

Name a nation that never historically went to war that still exists. Every country that we think of as being super-peaceful today is like that because they were delivering the good dick to all their neighbours back in the day, otherwise they'd be part of another nation.

I really like how VI actually captures this fact. Early game there's no "civilization" among the civs, its a slugfest over the most stupid reasons, only late game can you carve out a dignified and humane society on the foundation of all the blood you spilled.

I got this.

Does anyone else feel like every civ in the game is very "jack of all trades" in this game? They all have so many powers that affect so many assets of the game that even if you don't have something that directly makes you better at something the way the game works you'll get it anyways when you dominate another part of the game. It feels like it's designed to be a safety net from minmaxing

Imo china is my favourite civ so far because they actually feel decently different, what are yours

Also hope a tall civ comes in dlc or some shit everything in this game feels extremely wide

Your playstyle is gonna be dictated a lot more by what the RNG throws in your direct vicinity, because you can either research whatever you want real slow, or you can research what the game gives you easy Eureka/Inspirations for and go twice as fast.

Considering I started in deep marshland as Egypt I feel like there's no start bias to combat this either.

rome has free roads + momument every city so you can just spam settlers early and gain cultural, also bath gives extra housing and amenities so makes sure they can build that when settling

aztecs amenities spread out to 6 cities instead of 4 so you build cities in sets of 6 instead of 4

You have to have a military, period. You can get away with a relatively small army though. My current game on king I've been going tall (only 5 cities) and have a pretty reedy army of maybe a couple units per city, and I've been attacked by Germany and Brazil and they're both my allies now. The defender is always heavily favored, especially if it's a player that doesn't throw units away, so just have enough dudes to keep your virtue intact and you can make the AI peace out and generally pay you for it.

build a few ranged units as quickly as possible. and then keep them alive at all costs. Park them in your cities and take shots at passing barbs. If you see an oppurtunity to chase one down and kill it, go for it, but don't die If you can keep the archers that you make in the stoneage alive all the way through the game you will be able to wreck almost anything(on prince at least). Man, starting a new game where my capital does not have any horse tiles when in the previous one I had two of them from turn 1 is so painful. Production is hard HARD to come by, hill mines stink and the only other way is to hope for plenty of forests to chop and still have some left to lumbermill when you reach construction.

Settlers get more expensive the more you build, but the first ones are cheap so you should be building them to grab your best city spots.

What kind of beliefs do I use if I want to aim for Religious victory?

Best I've been able to come up with:

>Divine Spark (+1 for Prophet/Scientist/Writer from respective Districts)
>Jesuit Education (Buy Campus/Theatre with Faith, works well with Divine Spark)
>Mosque (+1 Spread for Apostles)
>Lay Ministry (+1 Faith from Holy Sites and +1 Culture from Theatre Squares)
>Scripture (+25%/50% City Pressure)

Its hard to find a balance of a religion that's easy to spread and one that will actually give you some kind of meaningful usefulness.

It also feels like culture generation is pretty worthless in this game, half the Civics tree feels like it can be ignored (if not more).
>>
>>158098597
Having no army, not even garrison forces, is silly, but I know what you mean in the sense that everything is very binary now.

If their agenda makes someone like you they are your foreverfriend. If their agenda makes someone hate you, that's war. Not to mention you really can't change the fact or react in time to not pleasing someone's Agenda.

Also horsemen are fucking ridiculous, which means your armys need to either also be horsemen or considerably larger in size to cover for their mobility.

Can we talk about the review scores for Civ 6 though?

I mean all these high 90+ scores and verbal praise?

Did these guys play Civ games before? Did they not see the blatant issues with the UI or many of the balance shit? Did they consider that people play multiplayer and the balance is all shot to hell?

Not to mention just some aesthetic inferiorities like shit main menu and awful quotes.

I'm not saying this game can't reach 90+ when it gets the pre-requisite expansions to fix it, but so far this is the usual Civ fare where it really doesn't rank that well on release.

My biggest non automatic unit cycling related gripe with it is how fucking empty the tech tree is. I've been bottle necked with the civics where only one is available to me before, combined with all the stupid dead ends and missing units it's really shit. I would like more buildings to build in a city center too, maybe make shrines, libraries and markets buildable in the city center and put new shit in the districts.
But the unit list is also really empty. It goes like war chariots > knights > tanks and that's it. Really fucking stupid.
>>
>>158099660

What I don't understand is the complete disconnect between Firaxis, their playtesters, the reviwers and their early access youtube shills and the actual gaming public that within 2 minutes of opening that game will go "holy shit these tooltips are awful and there is no fucking option to make them come faster" and literally no one else before apparently noticed.
>>
>>158099456

Balance and UI issues can be patched.

>>
>>158099748

Egypt is really good for this. River bias + horse archer uu that doesn't require horses
>>
>>158099820
The problem is that the balance makes it impossible to enjoy the core gameplay for me because I need to pursue the narrow avenue of what is currently on top of the balance as the only viable path, and Civ games are meant to be about a wide swathe of about equally strong and weighted options that all have viability in the end. I just feel myself shoehorned into doing the same cheesy shit every time.

Does denouncing actually have an effect on anything?
>>
How many warriors should one have in the beginning?
>>
>>158099913
Might lower warmonger penalties for going hostile on them later? Kinda like how being friends makes it go up for turning hostile. Sort of layers of escalation.
>>
>>158099913
You can declare war without it being a surprise war and incurring additional penalties if you wait 5+ turns after denouncing. It also has diplomatic impact. Denouncing someone another civ has denounced might make them like you a bit. Denouncing someone another civ likes might make them dislike you some.

Religion is the biggest fucking meme.
There are only 5 or 6 useful pantheons, the rest or fucking meme tier. A lot of them are worse than their civ 5 equivalents since they are changed to adjacency from holy sites instead of just + bonus to a terrain type.
Once you actually get a religion there's no fucking reason not to take the cheaper missionaries and apostles since you need to fucking spam that shit to counter the AI spam (everyone is fucking Maya tier apostle spam for some reason).
The buildings are all meme tier. You need to build a holy site + shrine + temple to even get access to the building in your city and you aren't going to do that unless you are going for a religious victory, in which case you only want the mosque for the +1 charge. If you aren't you are probably only going to build like 3 holy sites max since district memes.
The spreader belief falls into the same trap as the civ5 ones where they are all shit except tithe or church property since they are the only ones that work on your own cities and the aforementioned Apostle spam removes the religion outside of your borders.
Also passive religious pressure is a fucking joke.
tl;dr religion is worse than civ5

Another religion problem I've encountered that's probably a bug is if two different religion AIs start fighting outside my borders the aoe from one of the dudes killing something pressures my cities too which is annoying as shit.

It's fucking stupid though. Why does it take 200 turns to build a district in your 9th city but only 15 turns in your 5th? Especially when it's the same district, but far later in the game? That makes no goddamn sense. If anything, you should be able to build it faster due to technology advances and production boosts etc.

Amount of cavalry was important, but not necessarily decisive, in pre- and post-gunpowder battles - and cavalry was most important when the infantry was ill-disciplined and unable to properly respond to cavalry action.

honestly the game feels pretty bad to play

the production system when combined with districts is just way too fucking slow, you always feel behind and trying to fit everything in is a complete clusteruck

adding to it is how bad the tech tree and civic tree. tech tree is extremely stripped down and you can speed through it insanely fast with inspirations, no investment in campuses is even needed

civics are just extremely underwhelming, most of them are awful and you will be using the same ones every single game you play. they aren't impactful enough to actually change how you play like policy trees in civ V

this isnt even going into to the large amount of horrible UI oversights

We had a perfectly reasonable system for wide vs tall in 5. Implementing policies/tech in giant decentralised empires IS harder than in small centralised ones. This was intuitive, allowed for both playstyles to have strengths and weaknesses (production vs science/culture). But no they had to change it to some retarded, hidden from player modifier to district cost, that still doesn't chnge the fact that wide is the only viable play stile in 6.

This is a huge galaxy with five FEs, but I've only met two of them. I'm pretty sure the gigantic empire next to where the xenophobic FE awoke is responsible for this - that empire just kept getting fatter and fatter, eating all its neighbours. Haven't had an indicator that a crisis is starting yet, so I can only point out to that.

Now I just need one of the other FEs to awaken to save me, because all the FEs (including the awakened empire) is still Overwhelming in all three categories against me.
Playing pure pacifist is terrible when for nearly 50-60 years you were wedged tightly between two empires with no space to expand, until one of them tripped up.

Personally, I see districts are places of exceptional quality, almost wonders in their own right.

Like, Wall Street is a Commercial District, Silicon Valley is a Campus, Al-Jubail's an Industrial Zone and so on.

The creation of a district isn't just a case of slapping together a hut and saying 'do science in there.' You need to train and maintain a population of some of the most pious, inspired, money-grubbing, intelligent or industrious people in the world and supply them with the state of the art equipment that they need in order to compete. A nation only has so many great minds within it and an attempt to cultivate more of them is something that's destined to fail, as seen with the modern 'everyone needs a college education' way of life in the USA. That's the equivalent of having mass settling fifty cities while you're in the Modern Age and trying to force them all to have Campuses. It won't work. By the time you're able to cultivate the great minds in those cities and supply them with the resources they need to perform cutting edge research, other civilizations have out-paced you by doing the smart thing and not trying to over-specialize every city like that.

>tl;dr
Districts are homes for experts and you can't force expertise.

Also you can just conquer cities from another player and there bam districts.

You present an interesting argument, but I feel it falls flat for two reasons.

1)Game does pisspoor job of explaining mechanic to player leading to trial and error gameplay, which is bad.
>Districts are homes for experts and you can't force expertise.
2)Yes you can, you just need more production, which can be acquired via trade routes from multiple cities.

This results in a situation where the core issue of wide vs tall stands unsolved, since wide is still the only competitive strategy. And the whole increasing production costs serves what purpose exactly? to make more centralized wide empires? For what purpose?

It would be cool idea, if it wasn't, again, the only competitive playstile. Mechanics doesn't make you want to stay centralised, it forces you to. Meaning everyone will stay centralised.

Granted, the game has been out for a couple days, patches, meta, map generation, etc can make my point mute. But as it stands now, centralised wide is only competitive playstile, since it costs least resources/time to implement while providing most benefits.

Why does it play a sound when a barbarian camp spawns but doesn't tell you where it spawns?
Why does it not inform where or when your city borders are expanding?
Why does it not inform you when a city grows so you can manage the tiles?
Why does teching half of a tech then changing to another tech then queueing up the preteched tech afterwards and then triggering the inspiration before you get to the preteched tech break the tech queue?
Why is there no production queue?
Why does the build screen not tell you what the adjacency bonuses for a district are and force you to look in the civilopedia?
Why did they make the commerce and entertainment districts next to each other in the list and both have a gold symbol?
Why did they make it so you cannot remove a district?
Why did they not have the little icons like in civ 5 that alert you to things happening at techs like free envoys and shit and make it so you have to mouse over the tech in the tech tree to see it?

Lack of deeply specced civs can easily be explained by lack of civs in general.
Yeah, they killed tall, no argument from me, but it doesn't casualise the game, just dampens replayability, tall was always the easier playstile.
Policies were boring tho, cards are a clickfest, but they are at least interactive and provide options.
No idea about trade routes, haven't done much with them in 6 yet.

On top of that, districts make city planning far more important than ever before. The only casualised parts of the game are UI and art, the gameplay is actually deeper, if less varied.

Contrarian or plain retarded? With social policies you decided if your civilization was going to grow tall or wide or be warlike at the start of the game with no knowledge of your surrounding situation and stuck that way for the remainder of the game. the whole premise of civilization is building cities and improving them

a good strategy game should have distinct but equally viable options

if building lots of cities and improving them is easy, then that is the only real option. this is undesirable.

if either building a few cities and improving them or building lots of cities and not improving them as much is better than the other, then there is only one real option. this is undesirable.

You have two options, defend yourself, or get an ally who can block inbetween you and a civ that doesn't like you, which is very rare and unreliable, meaning you end up defending yourself once again.

It kind of makes sense given how they wanted things to specialize. Maybe they went overboard in people complaining about war not generally being worthwhile.

But considering the limits on population growth and how number of districts allowed is tied to population I think the amped up district costs are a bit much.

Firaxis explicitly said that they want to prevent people pursuing a single strategy from beginning to end that they don't alter, it's why they made the game a lot more reactive with AIs flipping shit, rules of war changing over the course of the game, RNG map generation playing a much bigger role and civilizations which have unique bonuses that don't force them to do one thing.

That would make sense if the AI was unpredictable, but let's be fucking honest, it's not. EVERY civ is going to denounce you right off the bat, and EVERY civ will go to war with you as soon as one of them backstabs you in the ancient era, and the aggression never cools down until you kill them all.

That's great. You know why Poland and the Maya were broken to hell and back? Because you had every wincon at your disposal with them. Trying to make each of the civs able to win at all wincons is fucking retarded since there's no real balance. Are you playing Pangaea in Civ V? Congrats, the Inca are going to rape your shit in. Are you playing Archipelago? GOD SAVE THE FUCKING QUEEN. Meanwhile other civs get to shine on other maps.

But hey, enjoy your bara. You deserve all that $60 is worth.

Growth isn't even that good early on because your main issue is going to be housing and amenities rather than food. Well, food is always good but not to the extent of wasting all that production and a tile for it.

It's funny because those "kind of okay but not really" early wonders tend to get picked up in the late game when people have spare tiles and production.

I feel like they only really benefit certain civs, like the Pyramids for China or Aztecs.

This was the case even in Civ 3, you needed Saltpeter for Muskets but for future units it was considered common enough a resource to stop being strategic. In gameplay terms it acts similar to Iron. If you have Iron in the classical/medieval periods, you have a big leg up, but if people can survive to Pikes etc, its usefulness drops off.

Use Observation Balloons. Or, more hilariously, bring a Siege Tower which seems to work on any wall. I didn't test at all eras, but I was loading Muskets into my Siege Towers. Could be a case if people aren't upgrading their walls or something.

Tech progression is all kinds of fucked and the tech tree is completely unreliable

Eureka boosts from goodie huts can fuck up your progression badly because you can get completely useless ones (ie. ones you were about to get) instead of free techs which are always useful. Should have been a boost to the other 50-40 % of the tech instead

Mountain starts are so powerful it's not even funny, and some landmasses can spawn without a single mountain. Starting near tundra always carries the double sentence of having no usable mountains and zero rainforest, and being stuck on "shitty" plains/grassland/rivers. Extra points for not having many hills or forests at all

Getting the city state boosts and well placed campuses to steal the extremely limited GS pool can easily cause you to snowball in science in a manner that the AI can't prevent

Finally, tech tree pre-requirements are fucked. As you showcased, you can ignore Animal Husbandry and Mining and reach Robotics. If you ignore only Mining, you can skip every military unit in the game except for the late infantry types

Civ6 plays a lot like Civ4, where it seems everything gets sort of out of hand in the mid game and you just have so much to manage after a certain point. It's very unpolished compared to Civ5, but it also has a lot more ambition than it as well so I can't fault it for that. I'm glad that the problem with the game is some bugs and what not, yet it's all there. Usually with strategy game you have bugs and also it feels incredibly empty with nothing to do after a few hours.

Feedback isn't as good as Civ5, save for diplomacy, I'm always confused with whether or not a certain thing is good. Diplomacy is also a bit too black and white, unfortunately, and while I'm not saying that the Civ5 ai had subtlety, it doesn't make as much sense as the Civ4 did. Just a few minor reduction in penalties and boosts and I think then the game would proceed in a more sensible manner.

The problems I see with civ6 are mostly in the numbers themselves and are things that can be easily fixed by the end of the month if not the end of the week.

Skimming through the thread it seems a lot of people are upset with the game because they can't use the same strategies that worked in the previous installments in VI.
>>
>>158108901
Also, how the fuck does the AI fleets seem to warp at insane speeds compared to me when I have more advanced hyperspace drives or whatever? Their fleet jumped from 9 jumps away almost as fast as my fleet made 3 jumps and one fleet seemed to instantly get to a system 4 jumps away from them. I had planets on those systems between the points and didn't see them warp. They just appeared out of fucking nowhere in a system that wasn't connected to the place where they started.

This game has such fucking irritatingly bullshit AI..

Centralised wide is the best way to go if you get the resources and terrain to actually cluster 4-5 cities in a single area. More likely you can fit 2, and the rest will be put on decent spots and only go for 2-3 districts.
