God fucking damn it, I should have known something was wrong. The fact that I was finding a broken-ringworld with those Curator fellows fooled me into thinking it was just random luck.
Thankfully it seems to only be space stations that launch strike craft, so I should be able to clear them out later once I unlock Point-defense, but this is going to set my empire's growth back considerably.

What can you even do to stop them? Nothing less than a horseman can chase a scout down. And due to glorious new movement system you almost never can attack them in forests or hills.
Of course if you are lucky enough for the scout to just waltz into your entire army you'll kill it, but unless you make it in one turn the little fucker will most likely run away.

I'm really overwhelmed by city management with unstacked cities. I'm afraid to make tile improvements because I might end up destroying them later for a new district. Have you guys found any good rules of thumb?

Also, what's the best civ for getting the most out of a small amount of cities? Japan? When I tried Rome, I got completely overwhelmed by all the cities I had to manage, because of how much they favor constant expansion. I think I have to play tall until I get used to the new city management, but there's no obvious civ for specializing purely in tall like in Civ5.

>>158034514
The only good thing about barbs is that that the AI is worse at dealing with them. It's always nice to see a captured settler as you plant a city down near a camp. I often leave them alone if they are in choke points that I want to settle near.

Just play a small map if you want less cities.
Only make improvements on good tiles you'll definitely be working in a close future but it's hardly the end of the world if you have to build over and improvement anyway builders are so cheap and get more uses later on.

Doesn't this game promote tall more than ever with these things? You need districts to build anything beyond the most basic buildings, and these things cost as much as wonders and need a good amount of population.

No, just spam cities, each with districts. There are very little global modifiers.

And in order to build wonders you usually need to fufill more criteria than you can cover with just a few cities.

Wide is definitely the way to go in Civ6.

They didn't just nerf the roads super hard, they also nerfed the movement in general - you can't move onto a tile unless you have enough movement points to fully cover the cost of movement, same applies to attacking. Non-cavalry melee units are even more useless than they were in 5 now. And I couldn't imagine that it was possible.

They tend to throw out more units more often, but they don't update them. I had a rough first war on King but the AI is still terrible, always taking unfavourable fights and neglecting ranged units which are just as overpowered as ever.

>>
>>158037440
Dead weight as in it takes them 50 fucking turns to start being useful and there's barely anything you can do about it. Use trade routes to hurry up the district phase of development? You need other districts to have trade routes.
>>
>>158037657
You have to go into the game I think

>>
>>158034520

Scouts are almost impossible to intercept, so you're forced to deal with raiding parties

It's better to invest into a Scout - Builder - Slinger - Slinger build early

Rush Archery asap and upgrade. Once you have two Archers, barbs become locally irrelevant

Always keep a ranged unit + up-to-date walls in every city

The AI is incapable of handling those steps so you'll often see AIs lagging multiple eras behind or/and having ridiculously low amounts of expands/improvements

You haven't seen true hell until you are caught between an Iron camp and a Horse camp, and they both fling scouts that cause a horde spam at Turn 10

>>
>>158037316
More early warmongering, less later. Early on the AI can get away with surprise wars, so they're not too shy about doing it. Combined with how squishy your cities are by default now, you really can't afford to not have an army early on.

>>158036313
I've been trying it out, and they've at least improved; research rates are more balanced to fit the pace of population growth so that you spend your time actually advancing a step at a time rather than unlocking everything faster than you can build it. Colonization is much improved with the removal of the prerequisite researches. I'm unsure on whether the new ship-design system is an improvement or a step back, but having to develop different types of ships for different roles is at least engaging.

The main problems with Stellaris have always been in the mid-late game, and I haven't made it that far yet, so I don't know if they've fixed those issues yet. Sectors are improved as you have more options for running them; a list of boxes to check or uncheck for what you want them to do, and an option to have them take a "balanced" approach to resource focus.

Overall, I'd say that it's not anywhere near perfect yet, but it's far more playable than it was at release.

Early game in this seems kinda military focused, like history I guess.

It's a good idea to keep a bunch of Archers around to hold off barbarians, and once they stop being an issue you may as well use them to go roll over some cities.

Is there some kind of rule for when you can build something within a district? Like, I'll build a theater district, and when I want to build an amphitheater next, it just doesn't show up on the production screen.
>>
>>158038328
Military horses are still faster than humans in a forest because they're not built for speed in the first place, they're built for endurance and not tripping.
>>
>>158038351
The Genghis-Khanette hands down. Melee units are crap, horse-archers that are created in pairs less so.
Monty is great at raping city states for workers though.

It's funny, all the late wars I've had involves both sides pulling whatever units they had to hand plus whatever they could build/buy/upgrade right there.

So you get Spearmean advancing on Knights running down Crossbows standing next to Muskets covered by a Machine Gun nest.
>>

A human in a good shape can endure longer trips than a horse and thus go faster long term or in this case, march longer and further.

Some buildings require certain prerequisites. City-states don't expand, right?

I kind of wanted to place a new city to the right where all dem repeat luxuries are for trading. Also good food bonuses. Game doesn't reccomend it though because its too close to the city-state.

Although I suppose I could expand there with my third or so city since theres nothing north or east of that area except ocean. Don't have to worry about another civ claiming it early.

Meanwhile Harald and Saladman are west, so taking the south area would be good for area control maybe?

Meanwhile rome gets +2 culture right from the start while getting free 50 production in every city for even more culture.

You could just pick god king with rome and greece would never be able to make up that production jumpstart while you still grab new policies faster.

Dont get me wrong, an extra policy is nice but not a game breaking advantage by any means and god king with urban planning isnt even close to overpowered by any means.

several ways, you can either scare them away from your city before they get to you if you catch them early (by moving into their zone of control,) or you can keep them from getting away quickly by putting a warrior and scout on either side of them after they have already seen your city to make them slow while you make more military units.

If you can get a unit on either side of the scout, it can only move one tile at a time, because you have zone of control in all 4 available hexes it can move to, so you can.

Now if it's too late entirely, you just need to drop whatever you're building and start making a couple slingers. You'll need to hold out against the raiding party. Then resume your construction.
>>
>>158039186
Holy shit I didn't even realize how unfair it was.
The camps in woods, so I need a full turn of movement to attack it or take it and it's craping out a slinger or warrior literally every turn. There's solid mountain the north, the sea to the east, and frozen wastes to the south, this camp's standing between me an everything else and is producing military approximately a billion times faster than I can.
What the fuck can I even do?

Wiz's response to criticism of the "soft" mid game was uniquely Paracuckolded: he just bogged down the opening game by making the intital pirate and alium menaces buffer. Now pirates and space amoebas require fleets in the thousands to clear, not hundreds, and this slows down your expansion. Or if RNGawd is against you, it kills you in the first 5 years before you even have a chance to get your defense fleet and most basic of infrastructure up. Leviathans look neat but really, it's just a bigger space critter.
The big problem Stellaris has is that it isn't fully a 4x, it's a grand strategy sandbox. And as it stands rioght now , it's a sandbox without a whole lot to do but blob and expand. It's ridiculous there isn't at least some EU tier trade system or some basic espionage options to fiddle around with. The diplo is greatly stunted compared to CK or EU, which have marriage offers, coalitions, trade embargos, plots, and claim fabrication flying around like clouds of bats, making things dynamic. Shit is happening in an EU game, long standing alliances break up , new ones form, personal unions rise and fall, colonial nations break away.
Stellaris either has watered down versions of these things, or lacks them completely., Pdicks even got caught using the Immersive Trade mod on a twitch stream and everyone got hyped thinking they were bringing trade routes into the game. But nope, Wiz was just mod mooching again.Something enough to mod the in studio game with it, but not enough to add it , even thoguh players have been clamoring for iit? Yes, it's silly, but I want to see the little merchant traders going to and fro at the spaceport, I want a simple visualization of how and where my trade is going, and if I'm being friendly and having open borders, I should get some little bit of extra tendies for it.
The star trek horizons full convert mod also showed how much you cpould do with event chains if you gave a shit and did a little writing .

-fast tech and civics advance
-1 unit per tile is just terrible choice for civ
Why they don't bring back the old CIv 2 model with collateral damage?
Or at last make formations of armies and corps early and let them be bigger.
-old units walking around
They should be upgraded imo - some free upgrades when civs hit some eras or enough civs in world hit them.
Like you can be nigger tier civ but still your units get rifles(aka Militia, Partisans, trucks with heavy machine guns) - no access to professional soldiers or heavy or high tech equipment - also buying weapons from more advanced civ should be a thing.

Overall its not bad but not great either.

Sumerian UU feels OP as shit costs as much as warrior roughly, available from turn 1, no upkeep cost, 30 strength and 3-4 movement. Get 2-3 and ride around the continent looting barbarians getting dem goody hut sacking bonuses. They feel better than classic era Horsemen because you don't need horses, 0 upkeep vs 2 upkeep // 30 strength vs 35

Considering how much of the early game revolves around dealing with barbs Sumerian bonus is really good
>>
>>158042981
Religion feels pretty much the same as 5. Religious combat is kind of boring. The religious flipping from units getting defeated is kinda neat but otherwise the options are so limited.

I had a City State which let me choose my Apostle upgrades which I think gave me a pretty big advantage. Debaters to block their apostles, Translators and/or Proselytizers for the conversions. Maybe Martyrs if you're falling behind on Faith.

Doesn't help they can be blocked by having military units surround your city center though.

It did, Montezuma declared war on me on fucking turn 26 and I repelled him. Then again on turn 100 and I repelled him again, taking 2 of his cities. Around turn 200 I decided to wipe him out.

Everyone except Tomyris who I was allied with disliked me for it. For wiping out the guy who keeps starting wars and denouncing everyone.

The screen swapping around is horrible. Especially if a Wonder finishes at the same time a civic does and you click a button while its trying to catch up with itself.

Also when you take a units turn it quickly swaps to the next unit for orders and then does its UNIT NEEDS ORDERS thing after a brief pause and swaps to a different unit. Who the fuck left that in for release?
>>
At least on Prince it feels like combat is the way to go. If you find ANY barbies near you you have to build 2-3 units, and if you build 2-3 units you might as well commit to an army. Am I missing something?

Also Tomyris looks INSANE. Can anyone compare when it comes to domination?

What do you do those games where you've got barbarians constantly attacking?

I had 5 camps around me, and every time I killed one another would respawn. How the fuck do you deal with that?
>>
gold seems to have pretty harsh diminishing returns the more you invest in generating it

religious victory is literally just spamming apostles after it's been founded for the entire game

barbs have insane numbers and will fuck your shit up

scouts are a lot less valuable than they were in civ 5

am I wrong on any of these?

The only nerf they need is limiting them by the player's tech level, so we don't have to fight horsemen - a unit unlocked in classic era - during ancient era. It makes no sense for barbs to be more advanced than "civilizations" they are trying to pillage.

I've been playing Russia for my first game, and it's been pretty underwhelming. Being able to plop down a city wherever you want and not having to worry about buying out to bonus resources is nice, but that's basically it for nice perks. The unique building's bonus is close to worthless even if you just want to paint the map (which is why I picked Russia in the first place) because a random tile for every great leader spent is almost nothing.

The trade route ability might be good on higher difficulties to close the gap, but it's worthless once you get ahead. There's nothing especially exciting about the Cossack either.

Is it me or do turns in Civ6 get really fucking slow after about 1000AD?

Also I think I have a bug. Or maybe it's intentional, either way it's funny. Gandhi declared war on me really really early on in the game, but he's on another fucking continent so he couldn't reach me and I couldn't reach him. Now it's 2000 years later and he's still at war with me and refuses every peace offer, even though I've wrecked every single unit he sent my way.

Early surprise wars and extra barbarian aggression, I'm guessing. People just aren't used to having to mobilize an army that early, which can fuck you up if you get unlucky. But if you survive that early game, the AI is happy to just sit back and let you win.

Only played less than an hour so far and I didn't expect to get shit on by barbarians. If your warrior gets ambushed by horsemen it's all over. Not even fortifying in a forest or retreating will save you. Had a horde just chilling in my territory until I got some archers out. Luckily it's not like Civ 4 where it would have been game over but still it seems like you really need to focus on defenses at the start as opposed to Civ 5 where nothing could touch you.

Just anywhere they fit.

I can't be arsed to plan out where everything goes, mostly because I don't know which districts give which bonuses and how they all interact with forests/rivers/wonders/whatever. So things I've noticed so far...

-The fog of war makes the game look brown boring and ugly, especially with 'realistic' time enabled. It looks weird and it makes even less sense knowing that the game was supposed to be more colourful and cartoony

-Scout auto-scouting is batshit retarded. My three scouts all auto-scouting have been running around my own already discovered territory for 60 turns. Whenever they encounter a barbarian they get scared and I have to interfere, why the fuck don't they run away. TO PLACES I HAVENT SEEN YET?!

-AI declares war when they have zero chance of winning. The Norwegian guy declared war on me with 3 chariots and 1 catapult while I had 8+ archer chariots or whatever you call those Scythia unique guys

-THE GAME IS TOO BROWN
>>
>>158049342

The only two meta districts in the game are Production and Science in that order

A Campus with no adjacency is still worth it by itself, and you can easily set up a district square to support it, an Industrial Zone literally has a functional hill/quarry/flat mine adjacency bonus so unless you are in some god-forsaken shithole you should be able to get 1 or 2 free hammers from it

To win, you need to rush up the tree to Campus, Industrial Zone, Workshop, Uni, Factory, Power Plant, Lab

The other three districts I would recommend is Theatre to get the useful shit like governments (literally ignore all the dead branches, no need to fill everything in, most off-path bonuses are incredibly useless and not worth your time), Holy Sites (Faith is used for Patronage. Don't play the religious game unless you're going for religious victory, in which case neuter your opponent and then Apostle rush his remaining cities) and Market Zones (river and harbor adjacency are easy to get, and dosh is very hard to come by, although Merchant Confederacy will still give you enough dosh to sustain yourself)

Neighbourhood is the meme option. Always build one if you are capped on housing. If you're not, fuck it

Also, since AI can't fucking upgrade units you might as well keep Eagle warriors for a long period of time.

What are the best beliefs to take if I get that privilege? I already took Dance of the Aurora because I have a holy site making 10 faith because of it.

Building tall doesn't work anymore

Get the Settlers policy as economic when it unlocks and then shit out settlers like it's going out of style. As long as it's on a river or the coast and has roughly 3-4 resources or an outstanding district adjacency (ex : mountain range) it's worth your time

Faith works through Great Prophet points now, again you need to shit out Holy Sites and Shrines to get one asap, or rush to government to slot the wildcard, OR build Stonehenge ASAP (AI is shit at prioritizing wonders right now)

Being first on Culture is a meme, most culture perks are useless, just rush the governments

Science and production is what you want to be first at. If you aren't, you're about to be dicked by an AI

production is the main resource in the game, of course you should get Industrial Zone in every city. Campus is just leftover from the V meta.

Anyone noticed how Great Person quality varies so fucking wildly ?

For example, you have Great Merchants who give you a free, unique amenity, and then the ones who give you a pocket change and a 10 turn's worth envoy

The scientist who gives you 3 eurekas and 1 inspiration, and the one who gives you 1 eureka

The scientist who shits out 1.5k on a plate for bothering to dig artifacts up and gives you free tourism for it, and then mister evolution who will maybe give you 1k if you are lucky, probably 500 after 10 turns of travel

The writers are all awful why bother, one writer fills two cities and then it just sits there blocking people

I guess if you know the exact order in which GPs come up, you can easily milk the best bonuses and let the AI fuck itself up with the shitty ones

If that's the case, they can get anywhere from 500 to 1500 beakers from each, which is enough to rush two techs. Coupled with Eurekas, you can jump an entire row all of sudden

You can literally download Stellaris DLC and it will work. No activator, no crack, no torrent, no tampered files

Just get Civ VI, it's already the best vanilla release Civ ever had, and it'll only get better once the inevitable unfucking patch arrives

Since it's a major release, they'll have two expansions for it

Those stations weren't there when I found the system. Apparently the mining stations I built dug too deep and woke up whatever was nesting in the asteroids.

Which I'm honestly okay with that being a thing in the game, it was actually kind of cool to get completely caught off-guard by what in hindsight was an obvious trap- No asteroid ever gives you eight fucking minerals; the only reason I didn't see it coming was because I didn't think they had the balls to stick something like that in there.
>>158054237
>XCOM 2
>Bad
It was buggy as hell at launch, but it's still a good game. Not better or worse than Enemy Unknown, but different.
They put a lot more focus on customization of your soldiers, since that was what really caught the imaginations of a lot of players. That and the fact that they deliberately made it mod-friendly gives them bonus points in my book; the game is complete without mods, but the stuff fans can and did produce adds so much more to a good foundation.

I get why it's not everybody's cup of tea; they did a major shift in the tone of the game, shifting away from the 60's-esque little grey men to a more dystopian government, but I like the end result, as it at least stands equal with is predecessor in base-game, and goes farther with mods.
>>
So there's no penalty for having more people then housing other then Population Growthrate?
>>
>get second city down
>dow from america about turn 30
>peace 10 turns later after holding him of with archers
>try and send 3rd settler out north with archer for the only free space close by
>hordes of barb horses and horse archers
>bongo dows sending an endless stream of units
>just manage to hold still defending 20 turns later
>send small army to escort settler again through barb lands
>america lines up all his troops on my border again
>have to bring back all but one unit incase he dows again
>swarmed by barb horses
>unit died
>unit captured

Still stuck on 2 cities building very little other than military stuff right inbetween these two assholes about 60 turns in on quick speed.
>>
>>158056550

No, but the penalty will literally brick your growth

It's -50 % if you are one under, and -75 % if you are at cap and over cap

By comparaison, the amenities are actually irrelevant. And neighbourhoods end the tyranny of housing late game

Early game, shit out Builders with Ilkums and improve every single tile you can get your hands on, every two improved tiles is housing for one citizen

so you dont delete them before the enemy can kill it in combat and gain the aoe religion spread.

It sucks a little because i accidentally built islam missionaries because arabia converted my city and i didnt know that i would now produce islam messiahs there.

Then i just suicided them into some shinto apostles and it dropped islam everywhere. Fun times.

If you want Stellaris, but something that's actually not shit and also has content try out Distant Worlds: Universe. The learning curve is a bit steep at first, but literally every single aspect of the game can be played manually or automated separately with different presets (or played manually and have the AI give you hints) so it'll ease getting the hang of things, or in general when your empire gets absurdly large lets you focus on the bigger picture rather than constant micro-management.

Cities produce 2 food 1 production by default

Everything above that is added to city yields, luxury/strategics are kept intact

Plain Hills are 1 food 2 production, becomes 2 food 2 production with city

Grassland Hills are 2 food 1 produce, doesn't change with city
