Some really neat ideas, probably the most RPG-ish roguelike, but I really dislike the stats bloat and special snowflake shit. Mental and spellsaves, the fact that random enemies might be fucking powerful and you'll only be able to see that if you mouseover them, stuff like that pisses me off.

Plus the gameplay often boils down to auto explore -> kill enemy -> auto explore. It's worse than DCSS in this regard, because due to the random generation Tome's levels kind of lose their cohesion this way. It feels utterly disjointed and very samey at the same time.

it has some on paper really cool classes (temporal warden is coolest; summoning yourself to help yourself kill stuff) but they're not that cool in practice since so much of the game is just spamming the same few skills over and over again

It was one of Tome4's few original placings - it was a dungeon with corrupted orc females, huge and bloated-fat broodmothers that some orc high-mage had done a bunch of magic corrption to to make them into breeding factories - when you fought them they'd spit out new-born orcs that'd attack you every other turn. Complete with descriptions like 'numerous pulsing vulvas', no joke, I might still even have the screenshot somewhere.

It was actually a pretty cool concept - the orc race has basically gotten shat on enormously all throughout the lore setting, being ungraciously defeated by halfling technology during the last grand war (by a giant eye-laser mecha, no less), and their population's been kept down by holy-magic spewing elves. So, enter the breeding programs! You found logs of the project lead while exploring the dungeon - in the last one the high orc mage kills himself out of guilt of what he's done, since the mothers got extremely fucked up from the experiments.

It's actually quite heavily based on ADOM, so that's where the association comes from. I won't get into a definition slap-fight, but with inferno mode on it does actually feel like one - unless you actually go absolutely ham on the gardening/jobs/ranches grinding, at least.

DA:O is a good western RPG. The overarching antagonist/conflict is a bit trite, but the alliance quests are where all the good content is at. The DLC ranges from really good to mediocre. The rest are shit, though I haven't tried their DLC (for obvious reasons).

Should I start with Angband instead of PCB? PCB seems way too cluttered and complicated for me to get into, but when I tried Demon it feels too simple. What is the perfect roguelike? Despite its flaws, DCSS seems to just be the best one overall.

Seriously though I like having 700 variants of every item. Pointless clutter makes the simulation more realistic. Sure, butterknives aren't useful for the PC and there isn't any pressing reason to have them in the game at all, but having them spawn everywhere gives the world character.

The boots, definitely. TThey let you do jobs you wouldn't be able to do, otherwise. (They have a hidden +speed stat that the page doesn't show, too.)

That being said, don't use that wishing wand - you'll fail since your device skill can't be very high yet. And having a portable wish is very useful - you can use it to summon in friendly gods to kill bosses, for example.

on the left, shooting range with a cow at the end designed to train bow skills (i use blunt arrows).
Arrows stick to the walls and dont fly off hundred meters so i can collect them very quickly afterwards.
On the right paw-board fox traps (i have about hundred of them) im setting and resetting them to train trapping skills.

Dorf fort is a sandbox game, like DDA.
We have a single oat satan in all of the thread, while every /dfg/ poster is oat satan to the power of two.

DF is not a roguelike.

If anything, CDDA could use some more useful diversity. I'd be interested in sharing Every Day Carry kits with people if it was liable to be much more than a mix of Survivor Gear and a few other misc pieces. There's some room for variety which is nice but Survivor Gear is so good and so relatively easy to get . The only obstacle is the duct tape recipe.

In the experimentals Survivor Gear isn't that great. It doesn't have good defense and its storage is nerfed too. For defense you're better off with Chitin or MBRs depending on how melee you are, until you get your hands on any of the powered armors. For storage, there's Nomad Gear and sine other tier above that I can't name off the top of my head that has more storage.

The multi-z trees are actually pretty cool. It's fun, if somewhat useless, to climb in them in adv mode, and starting a tree farm underground takes a bit more effort since the trees take vertical space to grow.
Also fruit trees are a preposterously good food source.

I said melee weapons were nerfed. Slightly. If you've already played with Stamina and Grabs it's not a big deal. However, martial arts are untouched by the reduction in damage on melee weapons.

Same tiers as before, only difference is that all the numbers matter and not just the tens digit. So 17 is worse than 15 is worse than 11, just incrementing with smaller penalties between the tens digits. The only curveball here is that ALL armor now increases your encumbrance significantly more. No longer can a melee character wear some light but decent armor and avoid penalties, everything that helps beyond your basic zombies at least has 10 encumbrance.

Basically treat all your skills like they're 1 point lower, at least.

But regular dagger damage is pitiful. IIRC, with 15 Strength, a +10 dagger does about 8 damage... which is the same as a +0 sword or axe. Wraiths and Ogres have about 50 HP, by comparison.

Obviously a 50% chance to OHKO would be very useful, even without getting sneak-boosted to 75% (and considering I have a Haste Charm) but I'd rather be able to pick my battles and not risk losing that coin flip against a Dragon.

Heroes suck because they have no real way to keep on fighting the player indefinitely, while a player who isn't a shitter can replace one demon per turn as a free action while slinging spells as the actual action.
This means that only early game heroes can rely on something more complicated than just ambush and rush.

Alternatively, a giant tank with max hp damage on all attacks.

Wow I can't do shit for damage past a certain point in Demon no matter what I try, I don't think I've ever been this terrible at a roguelike before, ever. Like in Dungeon Crawl or *bands I am aware of my every fuckup, but in Demon I am an incurable fuckup no matter what.

Don't try to make your MC into a damage dealer, he's best as support with some low SP cost ranged attacks, heals and possibly buffs.

Become indestructible and have all your demons learn elemental attacks that cover as wide spectrum as possible.
Give all your non-dedicated-healers some good attacks, with melee dudes getting high-cost ones and touches and ranged ones getting mid-cost and smites.

Don't go full offensive because it also happens to be full retard in a game where critters die when they are killed. Conserve SP because 10 attacks for 5 damage are better than 3 attacks for 10 damage.

There's the occasional "free" item if you aren't wearing something in that slot still.

Like mail carrier shirt is 4 storage +whatever armor 0 encumbrance even unfitted, so it's no penalty if your torso normal layer would otherwise be empty.

What I think would work is a "1v1 me faggot" build:
Leap Attack
Double Impact
Heavy Handed
Silver Hand
Whatever the Hex applier is called
Whatever the Paralyze applier is called
Innocence
Whatever the Sleep veil is called.

So the goal here is to attack the summoner and try to keep them disabled by proccing stun, paralyze, or silence(all three are different elements, so it's harder to resist) with Double Impact, then using Innocence + Sleep Veil to lock out their minions from interfering. This can still be countered by having lots of mind resistance and Draw Wounds on your demons.

The biggest problem with them is that they are a waste of SP and ability slots.

Say I use Crusader Slash and apply Guilt to the target. Great, now I can either waste 5 SP to attack them with the slash again, or waste an ability slot on Fierce Stab to prevent myself from wasting SP.

So what can be done about it?

Innocence and sleep veil won't do much here, since you can't micro the hero. He'll still act like a retard.
You need him to rely on player being the target and unable to escape. Hence mobility. Or whatever is the lower level speedboost called.

Once he retargets to something else, he's fucked.

So basically you want him to rush in, cause as many turns of stun as he can, cause as much damage as he can, prevent healing and escape and that's it.
Silence is worthless when the player just wants to kite the hero into demons and not attack him. Defensive abilities are worthless because he's too weak to tank alone.
He needs some way to catch up with player and leap attack alone won't be enough.

Mobility is the +50% move speed passive that doesn't work if Charge is on cooldown.

But speaking of kiting, that gives me another idea. If you stagger somebody with Headwind then somehow get another turn before they get their own, you can stagger them again because their last action was still movement. So if you apply enough cold attacks quickly enough, you can really lock somebody down. This requires two things though:
-They can't be immune to cold(but resistance won't save them).
-You have to catch them after a move action.
A nice bonus is that I think Headwind causes the AI to prioritize targets that just moved. In summary, combine high intrinsic speed with headwind. You could even give them a new ability that deals cold damage and is a move action, because then they could combine it with Mobility and Swiftness for insane attack rate and insane staggers.
