Reading IS the issue. Manga has ton of art. You see kids reading comic books all the time, you don't see kids reading thick novels like VNs. And by "thick" I mean heavy narration. Same deal for adults. They tend to not like reading too much. Not visual enough. And those that do like reading often prefer literature. In my opinion, the shape of a potential VN's fan life is determined largely by one factor - do they read a VN or do they read a really good book first? If someone's first exposure to good literature is, say, Cross Channel or Hanachirasu, they'll likely stick to VNs and obsess over them. If instead they read something like Hemingway or Dostoevsky, they'll obsess over normal literature.

Visual novels are aimed at the later group too. In term of sales, a bit smaller. We talking about a few thousand of units sold are a great success.

visual novels and books both serve different purposes. With visual novels, the soundtrack and visuals and voice acting can lead to a better experience when it comes to self-inserting and feeling as if you are a participant in the story in the same way choose your own adventure novels kind of work, but books are more about ideas and stories, not about that interactive experience. Some people may just not want that interactive experience and are just fine with reading normal books.

there's also the fact that visual novels are mainly just a niche from japan, but books are published everywhere around the world so the lack of exposure to the medium is a valid reason why people who like literature may not be able to get into visual novels.

That might sound a little obvious, but it's a big deal. Sound effects, art, music, and voice acting add quite a bit to the experience. It's about the collective rather than just the parts.

You learn vocab at the start so you can actually read shit

Once you've built a decently sized vocab pool, you then do individual kanji study to make identifying new words easier, since individual kanji study alone isn't particularly useful on its own

Most of the people bashing on kanji study on /djt/ are talking about the people who do RTK first, the people who do core first are going to be able to read moege within a few months, while the RTK guys have a higher chance of burning out and quitting since they still can't read shit after all that time
