I think the difference is that Fates and Awakening are much more like shipping sims than waifu sims, and people like to shitpost about which ships are "canon" based on how popular they get. I wanted something new but they gave us rehashed Awakening shit for Nohr and Hoshido's designs were mostly boring as hell. I disagree. I think that it's more that RD attempted to do a lot of things, not all of them successful but I think it's one of the games in the series where IS was unafraid. If it had had more time to work out the balance problems, it would have easily been the apex of the series in terms of gameplay IMO. As is I still love it but it's kind of like DMC4; a great, but flawed game that had the potential to be so much more.

It did try to spruce up a lot of things from PoR, some of them successfully; making the Skill and support systems less restrictive, nerfing mounted units so that they don't overshadow the others as much via worse stat caps and movement penalties indoors, and improving Swords as a weapon type through the addition of things like Tempest Blades and RD Ike/Mia support were welcome to me. Attempting to balance BEXP to not be as broken as it was in PoR was welcome too (making it just broken in a different way in the process but eh). Removing the Arrow weakness from Dracoknights was dumb and Laguz were still a drag to use without a way of perma-transforming them though.

I also disagree about the map design. Sure enemy phases got long unless you put on the option to skip animations, but RD had some neat stuff going on; 2-E was widely regarded as arguably the best Defend map in the series before Nohr 10 and for good reason (heck it's so good they brought it back in Fates DLC), and a large chunk of the P3 maps were good as well. I'll agree P4's maps weren't that great, but endgame becomes interesting with all of the really powerful bosses who see fit to do more than just sit in one place waiting for you, what with their huge AoE effects more or less every one of them minus BK had.

RD was a giant experiment. Some people (like me) loved it, some didn't, but I think appreciation for it is not at all unfounded.

Seriously though it's incredibly hard to tier RD effectively because of shit like Transfers and the availability system, not to mention the giant unit dump in P4. This is a rough summary of what it's like, not much has changed over the years since many people just gave up back in 2010-2012 or so.

And then you get shit like the Laguz Royals who universally shit on pretty much everyone whenever they're available aside from... well basically nobody besides the Dracos, Ike, and Alondite!Mia.
