Motorbikes are hard to make a sim out of because there's no way to replicate the way they control without a completely ludicrous full size video game arcade style thing you set on. Even just a set of handlebars in place of a steering wheel doesn't work right because of how countersteering and shifting your weight around works.

You can still do a physically correct motorbike sim, but the control method is going to be inherently unrealistic in a way that racing sims and flight sims aren't.

I want a nice comfy driving game now that I've got a good controller. I've enjoyed playing Truck sims in the past but I'd like something more racing focused.

I'm not sure whether to get BeamNG or Project Cars.

They're about the same price at the moment since Project Cars GOTY is on sale, I'm not sure that I'll be able to run Project Cars on nice looking settings, but it seems more game-like, whereas BeamNG seems more like a sandbox and I'm worried I'll end up just booting it up, crashing, then quitting after ten minutes.

Any opinions or recommendations on other racing/driving games I could get?

Asseto Corsa is nice

I've heard Project Cars has better graphics but Asseto Corsa has better force feedback on the wheel so you feel the road better.

Assetto Corsa has decent gamepad support. Not great, but it's workable with tweaking. There's not much to do in AC though because its AI is weird and online is dead. It's hard to recommend any of the really serious racing sims if you only have a gamepad because it's kind of like trying to play DCS or BMS with only gamepad.

GRID 1 and Autosport are both really good gamepad racing games. I don't know how realistic you want your racing games. If you have W10, Forza Apex is free and basically a slimmed down Forza 6. As the resident RaceRoom Racing Experience shill, that's another game that's free and has decent gamepad support out of the box.

if you want to play competitive single player, this game sucks.
The AI clearly follows different physics rules than you do (you will notice that they run over curbs or on grass at full speed without so much as a wiggle when they come back on track, they are not affected by tire temperature, etc), I guess it's probably to ease the load on the game engine or some shit, you are still at a disadvantage against the AI because they use trajectories that you will never be able to use effectively. The difficulty slider seem to only affect their overall speed rather than their driving technique.

The whole career mode is different than usual, if you are in for the usual "drive, earn money, unlock cars, repeat" mechanic, there is none of that in it. You can start your career from every class you want, from karts to LMP1s, the only "progression" comes from the fact that at the end of a season, you may be asked to get on board with a new team in a faster class, but during a season you will be asked to take part in other races with lots of different cars anyway, so you always get a taste of everything.

If you want some alone time, doing free practice sessions and getting autistic over your car's setup, then you found your game. There is a lot to be autistic about and the cars react predictably to your modifications. I suggest you do your own research on the things you may not understand about the settings of a car, because the explanations in game suck dicks.

Multiplayer is good, I rarely get issues with that. Events are highly customisable from the lenght of each session, to the pit stop requirements, to the weather, etc. Plenty of fun with that and at least you get to race with people who use the same physics as you do.

It's an overall great game IMO, it's just not good if you like a proper single player experience.

To add on this..you will have to lose a bit of time on the controller settings.
By default the settings are made for low steering sensitivity and high speed sensitivity (the faster you go, the less you can steer), meaning the car will be quite slow to turn in general and will be a pain to drive on high speed corners, giving you the impression of constant understeer if you don't use cockpit view and can't use the steering wheel as reference.

You should play a bit with those settings for the first few runs, I don't remember the actual numbers I used, but I lowered the speed sensitivity quite a lot and upped the steering sensitivity so, at all speeds, I always have more steering available than necessary (so I can actually drive on the grip limit of the tires and see some actual understeer if that happens), which gives you the maximum control over your car.

Don't lower speed sensitivity too much or your car will be impossible to drive at high speed.

On the other hand, default setups are surprisingly good for karting, but a good setup for a car will always result in karts being extremely nervous and unstable.

So, if you plan on starting with karts, you don't really need to play much with the controller, but the moment you decide to switch to actual cars, you have to take your time to adjust everything.

The pcars forums have a few good threads about controller settings, check those out if you end up buying the game

Project CARS endlessly pisses me off because on the very rare occasion where shit actually works and you aren't fighting the game over something, it's actually pretty nice. The physics themselves are honestly the least of my problems with the game. I have so many issues with actually playing it like my wheel suddenly stop giving input that are 100% game breaking. Last I checked this was a known issue with the MP menu (it happens if you stay in the MP lobby menu for more than 30-60 seconds) and SMS had said nothing about it. The sound getting more and more choppy as time goes on was also a huge annoyance to me. The AI fucking cheats as well which pisses me off to no end. It's death by a thousand cuts with that game for me.

And like I said before, what's so frustrating is that when the game actually works and nothing is fucking up, it can be a really fun and immersive experience. Like it's so good when it's good. But something is always fucking up and making it a chore.

MP was the only time I ever had those moments of fun, but I haven't touched MP in a long time. I also have to give credit where credit is due in that I love how SMS handles DLC. You can still play on servers with DLC you don't own so that the playerbase never gets fractured and I think that's really kick ass of them.

If you have an AMD GPU and suffer from low FPS and micro-stutters then try disabling CPU Hyper-Threading in BIOS. It helped me massively. Now the only performance problem I have is what appears to be an IO bottleneck from the lack of SSD when stuff loads as you fly.

The canopy reflection is a setting you can turn off in the options menu if it bothers you that much. It's there mostly to give you a point of reference to what direction you're looking at.

With a bubble canopy there's no point of reference if you're looking upwards or away from the HUD. Falcon 4.0 comes from a time before head tracking, so it was much easier to get disorientated when panning around the cockpit with a hat switch.

That's not true. There are instructions in the documents that come with BMS.
Though it could do with proper tutorial videos (ingame tutorials is too much to ask for I reckon) there are some in-depth ones on youtube. No thanks to the BMS devs though.

Stable is all you really need these days. They haven't done an openbeta branch in a while, and there's no reason to keep openalpha unless you REALLY like NTTR because it's almost always out of date and weeks behind stable/openbeta.

You can just keep openbeta as your primary install as well. Most of the time stable and openbeta branch are the same build, and only differ when there's an explicitly openbeta build released.

Rudder pedals are not a good substitute for pedals. The DFGT pedals aren't great or anything, but you should definitely use them. You might also want to look up what some people have done to make the brake pedal stiffer and require more force to push it further down. A progressive brake pedal makes it easier to be consistent with your lap times because your muscle memory is more about how much force you need versus a distance with your foot.

I bought some some seat cushion foam and cut it into a wedge shape then stuffed it down and behind the brake pedal for my set of DFGT pedals. It worked pretty well.
