Hey lads. For Dark Souls 1 how would I go about a monk build? I'm thinking caestus but I can't help but think there might be better options...probably not.

It'd have decent faith, no shield with healing and force miracles to represent ki. Pyromancies include ironflesh and power within to represent a strong will and force. What's a good set? And what are some good rings? Also, what do you think would be a good upgrade path? I might stack humanity to show that the monk is very sturdy and civil, but I'm not sure.

Yeah well blues are even more broken then they were in DaS now that there aren't many players that need their hands held anymore.

At least in DaS you invaded a sinner instead of helped a host. It would have been perfect if a few things were tweaked:
- sinners could be invaded with the area boss defeated
- sinners had reason to stay human (e.g. make effects of soft humanity only apply when human), or they could be invaded even hollow

It comes down to mindgaming your opponents. You have to judge their playstyle and see if they know how to play around your weapon. If they dont, you can probably combo them anyways and win the fight without a parry. If they dance around your range though, a good tactic is to just try to hit them, whiff, watch them run at you, and predict the most likely incoming attack. Itll just come down to you learning the strength and weakness of your weapon, their weapon, and how dumb you might think they are. If they spam a lot you can just throw out a parry and probably land it too.
So in short, ya just gotta git gud. Parry shields help though, but dont miss too many or you start to look dumb

The way it worked before, reds invade to halt the progress of a player attempting to make it to the boss; if they die or the host goes through the boss fog, the red (or area defending blue) fails. If someone wants to invite invasions to an area they already cleared, 9 times out of 10 it's probably going to be a gank (if they wanted to duel, that's what Red Soapstone is for).

That also begs the question, how would one escape an invasion if the boss is already dead? Obviously if they want to invite invasion they intend to face an enemy player, but some people are pussies who change their minds. The best solution would be just to give them no escape until they defeat the invader(s), force them to accept their decision.

It could probably inject some more life into the game, but there's not much point in it, and again, most of those would probably just be gank squads (though seeds would matter a lot less in low-level areas).

Why is this so common? It;s not even like you hear the attack register a second later, offset by lag or anything. The game just straight up fails a collision check while your target is locked in an animation where they cannot possibly avoid or mitigate the attack.

Cathedral of the Deep was originally the Way of White, followers of Allfather Lloyd. Nowadays, though, clerics of Carim say that Lloyd was a fraud and a pretender god, while Lloyd himself is nowhere to be found.

There's a screenshot of the NPC who gives you the DLC key. He's in the Cathedral of the Deep, by the bonfire.

So, where did Lloyd run off to when his followers started worshipping Aldrich? Where could he go to get away from the blob monster that eats gods? And would he feel guilty about letting his entire church fall to corruption and sin?

No one will summon you for a gank if your sign is by the boss door.
The mistakes the games make are not giving the player complete control over online without letting it affect gameplay.
Some have HP penalty, others kill online after a certain point or 2 makes you use an item(even if it's easy to come by). The change I propose makes it like:

I bet alot of people kill ODK so they can explore the ruins without annoiances and that's fair. With finger, those who DO have interest into things happening, be them gankers or not, would get it and the game would be more active. If you just allowed them no matter what, people would just play offline and the numbers wouldn't change

They can't patch it. The only reason they could patch it before somewhat is simply by speeding up the backend of the swap alot faster. By not meeting the requirements you cause a lag.

To fix it, they'd have to force you to be unable to press the menu button after casting a spell.

In all seriousness, I don't think Miyazaki does "lore" so much as he writes a bunch of nouns onto some darts, gets really drunk, and starts throwing them at interns. Words that got stuck in the same person are grouped together, and he comes up with some semi-plausible excuse for why they're related.

Velka supposedly had some connection with the original Painted World of Ariamis, if all her stuff and servants in there were any indication. If there's a second Painted World and Velka is in it, it stands to reason that she has some way to either create painted worlds or to teach people to do so. In DaS1, Velka was counted among the gods and had connections among them, to the point that Gwyndolin's Darkmoons used her sin tracking to do their work. As Lloyd was once considered a god, it's not too unreasonable that he might've asked her for amnesty once shit went south for him.

I'm not saying that characters from the base game shouldn't appear in-game

I'm saying you can't describe a character in five separate ways then in the same game present the character in none of the ways you described them

There is 0 cohesiveness in Lloyd's descriptions and his appearance in-game

Any of the characters you listed ARE a shell of their former selves, but their former selves can be imagined fairly easily as they're either clearly presented somewhere else or their "corrupted" selves are close enough that little is left to the imagination

Lloyd is described as:
1. The Leader of the Way of White
2. Using a Sword of Law
3. Using a Shield of Caste
4. Committing Duels of Judgement
5. Being a relative of Gwyns

In-game, he has no Way of White shit on (vintage or modern), no sword, no shield, and definitely isn't dueling

In-game, Lloyd:
1. Has a chair stuck to his ass
2. Has a big bowl of fucking soup
3. Is wearing a bunch of feather shit
4. Has a literal throwaway generic design waifu with a scythe defending him

That is fucking trash. It's trash boss design, it's trash storytelling, it's trash everything.

Having a literal sif meme reference boss for the ONLY other boss in the DLC is just salt in the wound.

Not the same move. Not the same animation, different charged r2, untricked r2s are unique.

What's copy pasted is Spin Bash / Slash / Sweep / Shield Splitter / Charge and so on.
These moves are so blatantly copy pasted that they reset to a different weapon stance upon completion. Like Astora Greatsword shifting to a halberd grip after Charge.

If he wants fun, unique movesets, he should play Bloodborne. Dark Souls movesets, especially in 3, do not come close.

Yoru running attacks will fuck up and move in place if you do them too close
Practice spacing them so that you get the long-distance dash instead of the run in place version.

Spacing-wise, treat the carthus sword as a greatsword and understand what you can and can't out-trade. You can swing into pretty much any weapon weaker than yours to trade, and will often recover fast enough for a 2nd R1. Trade-bullying is part of what makes the carthus so strong, since it shuts down so many things. Against anything with HA, fish for whiffpunishes or get up in their face and keep rolling their attacks waiting for a chance to rollcatch. Rollcatching is piss-easy with the cardcaptor and where you'll get a lot of damage against the average pontiffshitter.

Against katanas, run at them full tilt and hug their nuts. Never give them enough space to get a sprinting attack or they will just spam it with impunity. Watch for their fast rolling attack as you chase them and stick to their dick.

Against spears, roll into their blindspot and punish a 2nd R1 or rollcatch if they don't go for the 2nd attack.

Glaives are the only weapons that are legitimately difficult for a cardcaptor to deal with, because they out-trade you and out-range you to the point where baiting whiffpunishes like a passive shit is pointless, but also so fast, safe and low cost that hugging their nuts is a completely pointless exercise. You have to be patient and outplay glaives to beat them, but you're better off pulling a katana or a spear since those two weapons counter glaives very easily.

Relax. Listen to some chill music. The point of this is to make you patient.
Apply this patience. Kite. Space. Exploit openings with 2hr1 2hr1. Blocking counts as an opening, stagger your r1s for blockstun.
Master the timing and movement for roll catching. This is where CCS becomes elder god top tier. 2hr1 2hr1 step forward delay 2hr1 repeat, this little pseudo combo can win a match alone.
With roll catching, a rouge'd CCS is blatantly better than a dark CCS. Still, consider carrying an offhand dark CCS for turtles.

Artorias's lore in the base game was literally a falsification. His former self can only be accurately imagined using information from the DLC.

Lloyd's appearance in the DLC is, as far as I can tell, entirely in keeping with the circumstances surrounding his downfall. He's a shell of a man, hiding from the rest of the world and punishing himself for sins he can't forgive, with only the Goddess of Sin to keep him company. A Goddess who, if history holds any meaning, has a tendency to turn people into crow-like abominations. It's consistent with the lore.

But there's no reason for Lloyd to be the token Velka boss when he had a story himself. You think it's being hyperbolic, but I literally just drew lines between things that drag Lloyd's boss fight's quality down and what a similar fight would look like pasted onto Artorias, because that's what it was; they pasted a generic velka sinner boss onto Lloyd and called it a day. There was absolutely no reason for him to be that fight. It could've literally been anyone in the entirety of the game -- that's why people were fighting over if it was Velka, or Gwynevere, or Lloyd -- even the GENDER was up in the air because the boss is THAT fucking generic.

And no, it doesn't contradict. A good majority of Artorias's lore in the base game was completely sound. One line being misleading doesn't mean the entire character was a sham. It's not one line that's wrong about Lloyd; it's literally every physical descriptor for him save for "he's a way of the white guy" and "he's probably in gwyn's family", and at this rate, even though will be rendered non-canon when we get our hands on the DLC because they've ignored every other detail about him.

That's a good question, anon. Artorias clearly never used the ring, and yet the ring exists. The ring references a history that never happened, and has magic that supports its own claims.

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to call it fabricated evidence, to give credence to a cover-up. Gwyn, terribly afraid of the newly exposed darkness hidden in mankind, buried the history of Oolacile and Artorias's involvement with it. Artorias, being such a major figure, couldn't just disappear, so after enough time had passed his story was intentionally misattributed to the more recent New Londo, and the ring created to "prove" it. Sif and what's-her-cat remain there to guard his grave out of loyalty, but cat clearly doesn't have any care to hide the truth from you since she comes right out and tells you. In fact, she's the only thing in the base game that tells you Arty's story is a lie, and in a way that's consistent with the DLC as well, but everyone overlooked it at the time.

Bullshit. Do you know how much time it takes to make a map? They intentionally, over a period of months, created a map that resembled Darkroot and New Londo, and also overlapped perfectly with them. There is no better argument for an item description being wrong than the developers creating geography that outright refutes it. Geography has always been used as lore in this series. Before the DLC came out, you could reasonably conclude that Darkroot was the original site of Oolacile based purely on the crumbly architecture and item placements. For the same reason that your character was able to more-or-less safely enter the abyss, though they were still at risk of being eaten by giant humanity blobs. Chosen undead smells "very human indeed", humanity is the dark soul, chosen undead has plenty more than a murmur of dark, potentially due to being undead. So, I'll grant you that the Undead Legion had more dark resistance than the non-undead and potentially absent of all humanity Artorias (and their Dark Stoneplate Rings probably help), but it was not due to the wolf's blood shared by them and Arty.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. It's more likely that people simply had no idea what happened and attributed the Chosen Undead's actions to Artorias. The gaps were filled in with speculation. Alvina backs this interpretation up, too, although I think she is only saying it because she wants to protect the CU.

I always thought Alvina, Sif, and the Forest Hunters guarded the ring so that nobody else would try to traverse the Abyss and become corrupted like Artorias did, because I guess the ring isn't foolproof.

It's relatively well balanced compared to other games in the series at this point but the major problem is there's not much specialization you can do at any SL meta. This is mostly because of weapon balance, 95% of weapons scale best with Quality/Hollow Quality so most people make builds with that. Compared to Dark Souls 2 where there were a variety of weapons that had different scalings that made a variant for each type of build even in a single weapon class, with the Estoc being a Strength weapon notably, in Dark Souls 3 you can go 27/40 or 40/40 and find it hard to not have a weapon that works perfectly with that save for limited exceptions.

This also causes the problem of weapons in a class being generally overshadowed by 'the best' in their class. As >>156129206 says, the entire rest of the Curved Sword class is rendered obsolete by the Carthus Curved Sword as it has more damage, more range, and bleed on top of that with the same speed and attacks as every other curved sword. This is just one example with every other weapon class having 1-2 weapons that are just plain better then everything else, with there barely being any weapons that are meant for just a dedicated Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence or Faith build, and even when those do exist that are directly outperformed by Quality options such as with Wolnir's Holy Sword compared to even the basic Claymore.

I still have hope for 3s pvp since a lot of this comes down to just number issues From can easily change but just haven't or won't. In the patch that actually added Faith scalings to a number of weapons for example the actual scaling is pitiful, with only Wolnir's getting a decent amount and Lothric's HOLY Sword getting goddamned E-Faith scaling.

There's a bunch of enemies in DaS3 where if you hit their weak points (or just hit them in general) hard enough, they'll enter a critical state where you can riposte them for massive damage. Works on a bunch of stuff from crystal lizards, to giant crabs, to the doggos, to Yhorm, to King of the Storm, etc.

To my knowledge, none of that behavior exists in DaS1 or DaS2, outside of cutting off tails and temporarily dismembering the Rotten. You could also decapitate Freja with enough damage to one of the heads, and then kick it around like a fucking soccer ball.

For dueling, Dark Souls 3 is the most balanced game in the series. Contrary to what scrubs on /dsg/ say, you'll encounter a variety of builds and weapons.

They've gotten rid of a lot of broken mechanics from previous games like dead angle attacks and chain backstabbing.

Invasions are another kettle of fish. They're just not as fun this time around since they're too punishing for the invader and too forgiving for the host. It's also much harder to punish estus healing.

I don't invade in DaS 3 at all. It's a waste of time. Just stick to duels and you'll have a ton of fun.

Yep, as a guy who has made a STR pure build this is absolutely 100% correct. What really needs to happen is that poise needs to either be removed or given a bar. Should it not be removed it needs to work like this:

>When you swing a weapon it should, in addition to depleting stamina, deplete a set amount of poise.
>Larger weapons deplete less poise, smaller ones deplete much more
>If you are hit in an attack animation ON ANY DAMAGING FRAME and the attack consumed poise, you have hyperarmor
>If the attack did not consume poise (due to not having enough or being out) you do not have hyperarmor and will be staggered
>poise recharges instantly after a string of attacks is finished, or when you are staggered
What this means is that greatweapons can swing a LOT and still have hyperarmor frames, but also still need Wolf Ring/Armor ro gain this hyperarmor. Smaller weapons that, right now, can get totally stunfucked now can get some effect from poise if they poise-stack, but do not benefit from it nearly as much

I think you're overreacting. In DaS you could use GS, claymore, zweihander aaaand well that was about it, granted DaS had a lot of cases where some weapons were basically straightup upgrades from ones that were accessible earlier. Sad thing is tho that it did fuck all against anyone with a light build and a brain (all sorcerers presumably)

SoftS had a couple of good greatswords, the embarassing downside being that they were parriable. They did great damage and poise break tho

DaS3 took one step forward with making ultragreatswords unparriable, but then a million steps back by making them retardedly heavy, deal damage about on par with lighter weapons and interruptable in plenty of cases

What gives me conniptions is when someone takes something like that and makes money with it without crediting their sources. I was originally intending a fatroll thing for my own challenge but I don't think fatroll works that well for DS3 as it does for DS1 since it makes the game in DS3 just not play as it was intended while it's completely viable in DS1.

Well the sages ring adds about 30 virtual dex whereas an extra attunement slot is only 5 or 6 points in attunement.

Faster casting is also much more important in PvP if that matters at all to you.

If you only sprint at them before you throw out a running R1 you'll get parried. If you're constantly sprinting around it makes it harder to predict.

Don't be a dumbass, greatclubs are shit because they're so slow a paraplegic could dodge them on sight even through lag. No amount of hyperarmor will fix a weapon that's literally so slow the next slowest weapon has completely finished its attack animation before the GC's hyperarmor even kicks in. That's like arguing DeS's Soulsucker is balanced because if you were good enough you'd be able to hit someone even though it has a range of two inches and a 3 second casting time. And doesn't even do damage. But a really skilled player could find some way to kill you with it, honest, so only a scrub would complain!

This is just inaccurate. Phantom range works both ways. Why do people act like straightswords and katanas are the only weapons that benefit from phantom range? Phantom range is due to lag, not the type of weapon that you're using.

There is no tradeoff that makes up for weapons being 100% dodgeable.

A "good player" will roll through every attack your strength weapon makes, because they're familiar enough with the game to know the timing on everything, how to avoid your hitbox, and how to get behind you for an easy backstab. Because strength weapons are so slow you can backstab the R1s.

It affects all weapons. Getting caught by a straightsword isn't nearly as bad as getting caught by a FUGS. The fact that the latter occurs less frequently balances this out.

You are a scrub who gets hit by strength weapons but never tried to use one, so you're projecting what you think would be good balance onto a weapon class and playstyle you're entirely unfamiliar with. Strength weapons, and greatclubs especially, are not balanced to the point that they can hit an intelligent player by timing their attacks, because, again, they are slow enough that a faster dex weapon can finish its attack animation and still have time to dodge out of the way, and the damage a strength weapon does when the stars align and your opponent drops the controller because they had a seizure is not as much as any quality or dex weapon can push out in the same timeframe with attacks you sure as shit aren't dodging on sight.

Picture this: great club R1 is so slow, a curved sword can hit twice and still dodge. Except they won't need to dodge, because they staggered you because great club hyperarmor (and most hyperarmor weapons, for that matter) don't start until the attack is about to hit. The strength weapon is the one that has to evade the attack, because their weapon is so slow the opponent didn't just have enough time to dodge once, but had enough time to attack twice and dodge once, but didn't need to dodge at all because the hyperarmor hadn't activated by that point.

Strength weapons were fine and viable in Demon's Souls, due to full hyperarmor and decent speed. They were difficult to use in DaS1 but could still work because poise. They were okay in 2 because silly high ARs and functional hyperpoise. This is not how competitive pvp works in any game, let alone Souls which only has pvp as a secondary function.

"Viability" is not judged by "it's technically possible to hit an incredibly stupid player with this, therefore it's fair". "Viability" is judged by "in a fight between two equally skilled players, this weapon is unusable trash". When talking about whether or not something is viable, nobody who isn't a mouthbreather ever means "this weapon can be used if you're more than 3x as good as your opponent" because 'competitive pvp' and 'scrubstomping' are two entirely different things.

Against anyone who is not a scrub (that is to say, against anyone worth fighting at all) great weapons are unusable trash because your opponents ARE the ones who are hypothetically good enough to dodge obvious and slow windups. In competitive pvp for any series, scrubs are not a thing that exists, and you cannot afford to assume that you're so astronomically better than your opponent that you can hit him with a trash weapon. In competitive pvp, there is no reason to use a mechanically inferior weapon when you can get similar or better results by using other weapons that don't have in-built flaws.

You're a scrub who doesn't understand enough of the game, or any game ever created, to even grasp a basic idea like "this weapon is so fucking slow it doesn't pose a credible threat to players with some experience in pvp".
