the ship was actually still and suit dampeners off, but I guess it thought I should still be moving at 400 m/s

still takes way too long to build shit, I hate hate hate hate components
>>
>>155254635
Thats why creative, best way to do quick tests, and then aply it to survival.
Sometimes, a ship or a concept was even a month before i even dare to build it in my survival run.
>>
>>155255081
I kinda enjoy some of the limitations of survival, like having to make a scaffold to build that solar tower, but running back and forth carrying 1/10th of the materials you need to place a single block is killing me, I'd rather go long distance mining in elite dangerous

>>
>>155255508
honestly, I use the realistic inventory size because so ships will have nice limitations and built/stored blocks will have the same weight, but not having the 10x inventory on foot is literally painful.
>>
>>155255950
the personal inventory is just too limited, components should be lighter.
>>
>>155255691

>>
>>155256121
You can put welders or grinders as gloves.
I need to work a little more on that shit.
And make it better.
>>
>>155255950
also, 10x inventory cargo ships are infeasible on blandets in vanilla

You're seriously shooting yourself in the foor by playing A) starting on planets, B) playing in 1x inventory, and 3) playing vanilla
>>
>>155256081
recipes are difficult to remember too, so it slows you down while trying to remember which ones you need to carry or which ones to manufacture

the whole thing needs simplification, welding blocks together with components is kinda cool but its too tedious to make anything large with

once you get worker bees that can hold a whole bunch of shit at once I guess it gets easier, but before then you're basically boned

>trying to remember which ones you need to carry or which ones to manufacture
Wield the block you're trying to build, go to a cargo container that contains the components, right-click in an empty space.

Boom, components in your personal inventory. If you don't have the components required and/or not enough room, a warning message appears. Also, if you don't have enough room, go back to the container after you placed the first set of components you picked up and right click into an empty space again.

If you did not a mobile welder ship, also acts as a component mover and hydrogen/oxy/power regen, then it is your own fault making yourself work so hard.

have you tried using Control Module mod?
it's pretty easy and you can bind everything to real keys and mouse, no need for the hotbar anymore.

>>155256568
That's not true, 1x inventory adds a nice challenge to the game and it's not THAT limiting.
But surely, to a first time player I'd suggest 10x inventory especially on planets where you have to run back and forth.

The only mistake one can make starting on planets is to go after ore deposits instead of rocks on the surface.

I know the mod, but dont put it in any that im not taking seriously.

Now the hot thing is the Vtol Script, it alows you to use wasd to control thrusters on rotors.
The only thing you need aside from the timer and pb, its 1 thruster facing in the direction you want to be binded in the main body.
So you put 1 thruster facing down and another facing backwards. and you will be able to control ships with multiple grids using wasd.

The idea is kinda retarded, its better with 1 arm and more joints to be more flexible.

Is it possible to make vertical launch torpedoes in FtD? I thought about giving them a thruster and propeller combo with little fuel, but then i realized that the thruster would eat the fuel up and it'd probably not be able to keep it's forward momentum when it hits the water.

What do you think is better? A single shot CRAM bullet with a 30m explosion radius mid-air or 10 or 15 APS bullets with a 8m flak explosion radius?
Sure, if you compare single bullets, flak is weaker, but with CIWS (assuming you want the anti-barrage kind), you want to shoot as much as you can, which you can't do with CRAMs. If your gun is extremely precise you can change flaks with HE, but i don't think it's worthwhile

this is disgusting and triggers my autism

step it up:
1: design and simulate circuit (pen&paper or something like SPICE)
2: if your design has a controller, write program and test it (evalution board)
3: design PCB (draw on copper PCB or Eagle or whatever)
4: make PCB or order it, order components
5: solder it, test it
6: if it works as intended, you may come back

God damn i can't into nuguns CIWS at all.

Large caliber is needed because missiles have 33.33 health per block, but a high ROF is also needed because where there are 10 missiles there is 40 more...

so I need a large caliber high rate of fire gun...that also needs to turn quickly to shoot missiles. What the fuck.

And the extra missile health that missiles have now means that the old kinetic 18mm ciws is completely useless.

it would be nice to have a way for moving parts to be part of the same grid for simple things like doors
>>
>>155339012
how would it be computationally expensive? any half decent game engine and physics engine already has the built in structures to do it perfectly

you'd basically just parent the child grid, so the whole ship is treated like a single rigidbody, then you'd have simple internal physics like "rotate x degrees" which would be much more stable

if you want to get fancy like rotors that react to physics (why would you want that?) they could probably handle the collision event and apply the impact force to the internal physics instead of the ship as a whole

could even do it for landing gears and shit so they just can't break except to damage

If only factions were smarter and didn't just track like cyberpooches. If you want, you could easily throw on a few scripts to make shit even better, such as using antenna comms to get status readouts from remote stations, and the Fleet Command Mod so you can send fighters and such at the pirates.

>>155349023
Alien planet is super easy to reach though. All you need to make an interplanetary ship is included in the lander.
Honestly, they should make refineries and assemblers dirt cheap, or at least include a slow but cheep way to start from scratch. Maybe a tierd system where you work your way up in tech, and not just for the hand tools.
>>

You stick them down so that you can steal those 5 extra meters since 150 is so short.
Long range detectors mods are a godsend, if only keencode wouldn't fuck that up too.

>still queries the whole planer
>death by simspeed

300 meters work well for planets.

Hey look, an actual crossout review that goes pretty in depth to all the bullshit. Anybody who hasnt played the game yet can get a pretty accurate view of the game in this review.

>Many folks will be able to overlook those niggles and the interminable grind. It’s also possible the rate of progression will be reworked. But for me it is currently like traipsing through a bog, and the sheer grubbiness of all the menus doesn’t give me much hope. A horrible thing to have to say, because the wasted potential here is astounding. It’s like someone took all the joy and creativity of Besiege and made it competitive (again, what a great idea) but then they soaked it in grind, leveling, bad AI, icky microtransaction bait and then – consulting no-one – slapped a full-price tag of 25 quid on it. A big disappointment to see so many unforgivable flaws in such a wonderful game, where they simply don’t belong.

Tried getting into factorio again, looks like I'm hooked this time was really put off by graphics earlier. How come I don't have any aliens attacking? I've built some ineffectient base setup with red/green automation and a 1-13-10 steam setup. Is my pollution just not high enough yet? Is it something I should worry about? I went exploring on a car and there are nests everywhere around me.
>>
Aight.

Since I do not have the time under the week (busy with work), I'll look into thoroughly cleaning and revamping the server on the weekend. It seems like we are fucked one way or another, with 51MB world file, over 120 MB asteroid/planet files and 5 MB definitions file.

The problem is, without an activity log, I don't know which grids I can remove/mothball, except for guessing. It also seems that the tremendous amount of voxel data causes the RAM of the server to chug to full in short time, which then results in swapping at cost of CPU cycles. Stability ain't all that great, either.

I would like to switch to Keo's box, but that requires Keo, and, ideally, a slot in a datacenter (if that's affordable) with better upstream - as soon as the world reaches a certain size, consumer upload bandwidth just isn't gonna cut it, regardless how good or bad the box is.

Additionally, the 1 planet, 1 moon idea requires some heavy lifting, that'd love to share among people, but I don't know how to do that without it being chaos. We need height maps, biome definitions, etc., and that is a massive time sink to get done properly. The zoning channels alone are a mindfuck and a half. I really don't know when I'd have the time, exept for weekends. Incidentially, that's also where I don't work and like to do other shit.

The alternative is a wipe, but, lel, who likes to see all their shit vanish? Personally, I enjoy the first steps into space and the scrambling to make due and survive, but the post-scarcity situation is reached so fast, it's a short enjoyment.

If anyone has an idea or concept and what we shall do with the drunken server, early in the morning, please let me know.

How do I make a rotor that doesn't CLANG when I move on serb?

option1: safety lock override
option2: grab it with a landing gear / connector this looks pretty bad even in SP
option3: hope the shields stop CLANG
option4: mergeblock

The rotor will have a connector on the end and heavy ships will dock there, so I was thinking of a merge block to keep it steady and have the rotor only handle the rotation and then behave as static, but if the safety lock does the same without CLANG I'd prefer that.

You've all seen the server slow to a crawl, you've all suffered from it one way or another. Today, while I was pondering that situation (again), I came up with a way to cleanse the game world without wiping, and also, introduce a couple more interesting elements.

Operation Exodus.

The game world will go through a four week cycle. The astronauts (and cosmonauts) on the serbian are nomadic survivors on the run from a catastrophe. Every month, they need to leave their current region behind and jump to a new one, aheead of the destructive wave behind them.

WEEK ONE:
Arriving in the new region, no meteors are noticable, no pirates are active. The region is, for all argumentative purposes, safe. A low density asteroid field is there for the pilfering, and there might be stellar bodies - a moon, a planet, and anything in between. Black holes not excluded from the list of possible entities.

WEEK TWO:
The vanguard of the catastrophe arrive, in the form of light meteor showers now and then. The sector is otherwise still relatively quiet.

WEEK THREE:
Meteor activity is ramped up, and becomes a serious problem. The scouts of a scavenging pirate fleet ride on ahead of the main fleet, looking to engage any targets of opportunity. Their ships are simple, but of various sizes.

WEEK FOUR:
The meteor showers reach apocalyptic proportions. Any ship not shielded and able to field considerable CIWS options will find itself overwhelmed. Smaller ships should be ready to dodge and hide in asteroids. Additionally, the main pirate fleet has arrived in the sector, actively seeking out nomads, producing combat drones, and attempting to kill and scavenge what they can find among the chaos.

>>155382456
neat, makes me wanna try the spengie-online experience again.

what if, someone will be late and arrives in week four? will he stand a chance?
>>
>>155382456

EXODUS:
After four weeks have elapsed, the sector is no longer sustainable for the nomads, and their journey goes on. For that purpose, each faction should build an Exodus ship. That ship should hold your production facilities, carry your materials and be able to produce ships from blueprints. Additionally, each faction can also designate one combat ship and one other ship of their choice (miner, constructor, your call) as exodus ships.

To do that, name the grid (K, info tab, bottom right corner) and not just the beacon/antenna EXODUS [FACTION TAG] [SHIPNAME]. For example, EXODUS WSA Pike Prowler.

A faction cannot have more exodus ships than members, and no more than three. If your faction is hust you, you will have one Exodus ship. If it's you and a buddy, two.

Each Exodus ship needs to have one Jump Drive named "Exodus Drive". K menu, find a jump drive, rename it. This bock will be destroyed at the jump, so you will need to replace it after the exodus jump.

Each Exodus jump means a fresh map, some exodus ships, new stellar bodies. You have a month per map before we softwipe as described again, with the increasing dangers escalating.
______

This way, abandoned grids disappear, inactive players fall off the map, and we have the cumulative runaway effects in check. It also adds layers of difficulties, allowing for more diverse gameplay - more survival. I will look into reducing the yield of ores to ingots, reducing the cargo size of Earthbreakers, to make the survival portion a bit more testing than it is right now. Refinery efficiencies may also drop from 10x to 5x.

I apologise to all base fags and blaned dwellers. Consider this a hold-over mode until we have our own planet, and a box with SESE and more control over grids.

>>155382721
By my experience, a crafty captain can hop into a Sparky and seek shelter in an asteroid with a bit of dodge-fu. It will definately be a challenge, but not an impossible one. It might be advisable to ask for help.
>>
>>155382939
For this purpose, weeks are considered to switch Friday/Saturday, with this Friday being the first. We will go from NORMAL meteors to the next heavier option. Please prepare for an Exodus Jump, as outlined above, in 10 days. To reiterate, on the 01.10.2016, all non-Exodus ships will be left behind and you will spawn into a fresh map, with only your Exodus ships left to spawn on.
>>
>>155383065
Does the exodus drive have to be a 3x3x2 one?
Is the ore problem fixed so we can mine again?
>>
>>155383226
Any drive, I don't care. It's more like a sign that you logged in and built a new one, rather than me carrying Exodus ships over every cycle. If someone leaves an Exodus vehicle without a jump drive, I can safely assume they didn't make a new one and didn't log in.

You can use that drive, too, that's fine. I will simply run a block search over the grid, and if I don't find an Exodus Drive named Jump Drive, the ship ain't coming with.

As for the ore issue: Doubt it. There has been a patch yesterday, though. I dunno, to be honest. I have been rather busy.

It's not really an issue if we can use any drive, sparky already has enough to build a small one anyway.
I don't think it's something you can solve, marek fucked something that fucked up the ore mod in my opinion, and disabling that would mean that all the existing asteroids would get fucked up.

I'm not sure how we can improve something that reliable.

Electromagnetic bullet propulsion (coilguns, railguns) still has the problem of energy generation. They can be used as boteguns, or as artillery, but not as a handheld gun.

Gyrojet bullets combined with modern missile tracking systems could lead to smart bullets, but i don't think we'll be seeing anything like that soon.

There has to be another solution instead of more dakka because you can always apply more dakka to the new solution

altough it shouldn't be too hard to make a mod that disconnects you from a server and reconnects you to another one.
But then you still have two seperate servers. You'd need to write mods for cross-server chat etc. as well which is more work than you think

I think vibration, or sound frequency induced brain death would be the way to go, honestly.

for vibration, consider the most lethal and brutal murderous animal on the planet...

Most likely it utilizes a blueprint save, as well as a run-down of every internal component, cargo, slot, fuel, oxygen, the whole works, then duplicates it to the buffer server to make sure everything is okay, and possibly keeps it in memory while the player loads in to the other server?

a three-way-process with a fail safe, basically.

And how do you intend to transmit the vibration/concussive force through the vacuum? Here it works because we have air/water to transmit it. In outer space there's nothing.

>Could you cause an entire vessel to just collapse on itself in super-heat?

Spengies does the voxel part(you can make circular holes etc. in terrain) and the graphics part. The detail is nice, but you need a lot more than visuals for a game.
Also, it's supposed to be an MMO.

Okay, so, maintenance concluded.

We had about ~150 grids of various sizes ust foating around doing shit. It looked like some bashed as many ships together as possible and left them out to clang. Why. Why would you do this?

To address the ore issue, all asteroid files have been killed and Better Stone 6.84 removed. All asteroids will repopulate from stock values, and hopefully work again. This may mean that you need to drill out some of your bases. inb4 I buried some of your ships with that. If I did, message me, I#ll help recover them, either from backup or otherwise.

Server is now booting back up and should run a shitload more smoothly than 0.3 sim speed. The entire save shrunk from 185MB to 105MB. The majority of that is the three blaneds, and all your grids - especially the large ones, in excess of 3000 blocks.

If you're going to make an energy anti-personnel weapon why bother with lasers?

There's far worse wavelengths you could use as far as humans go.

An obvious example is the frequency of a microwave oven then focus the beam, boiling the water they're made of. But there are plenty of fun affects different frequencies can have. Some excite the nervous system, so you could probably get the opposition dancing with enough juice.

And heck if that don't work at least the enemy will probably get cancer and croak it in a few decades.

I mean I expected that it would be, for example in one memory location:

bits 0-7 OP code / bits 8-15 data

but it seems it's actually the case that an address could be either an OP code, or data associated with an OP code, or just raw data.

unless different architecture handles OPcode and data differently. that is.

what do you mean by "data", static data like strings images etc. that's read at runtime or immediate operands(in "mov C, 232" the 232 would be called an immediate operand) or variables written and read by the code.

>>155407745
Instructions size depends on the platform, x86 is variable-sized, i. e. instruction size varys between instruction. There are architectures which have a fixed instruction size, i. e. every instruction has the same length.
Variable-length instruction streams are harder to decode(as a cpu designer, you need to build hardware that can decode instructions quickly), but more flexible.

easy automation is an "easy scripter", but has its limits (for example, no variables, but you can define constants).
The documentation is a bit lacking, he forgets to tell you how to set up the timer block but he shows it in the videos I think.
Other than that is very good and easy for most things.

If you're playing Single Player, with the Control Module mod you can keybind things to any key and to the mouse (there are examples on how to make a script for a tank turret, changing that a little you can do most things and it will still be pretty easy).

It hit a line of small craters in the sand and began to turn to starboard, careering towards Klemantaski, who, viewing events through a telescopic lens, misjudged the distance and continued filming. Hearing the approaching roar he looked up from his viewfinder to see Panjandrum, shedding live rockets in all directions, heading straight for him. As he ran for his life, he glimpsed the assembled admirals and generals diving for cover behind the pebble ridge into barbed-wire entanglements. Panjandrum was now heading back to the sea but crashed on to the sand where it disintegrated in violent explosions, rockets tearing across the beach at great speed.

You're approaching this from an entirely wrong direction, hear me out.

First we build a huge spherical electromagnet, powerful enough to lift a submarine. Then we coat it in several meters thick layer of vulcanised rubber, and THEN we drop it out of a plane.

I call it bouncy death murder ball of greater suction.

How bad is this idea?
It should work on the serb, it would be safety locked most of the time, unlocked only to rotate it at 1 rpm while cruising at something like 10-20m/s, ship would have plenty of shields and a release button.
BUT the rotor would be attached straight to a cargo container filled to the brim with deadly unconventional projectiles.
I tested it on a faster ship and it seems to be fairly stable, only locking-unlocking rapidly with the rotor actually moving gave some CLANG noise.

Would Factorio be more interesting if conveyors needed to be connected to the electric grid, and consumed quite a lot of power?

Would Factorio be more interesting if there was a recipe for assemblers to make cardboard boxes(using wood and some chemical), a new building called a Packer(2x2 building, toggled to either stack 10 items into cardboard boxes using electric power or unloading the boxes), and assemblers could substitute any of their inputs for packed items by installing an "unpacker" module?

configurable block limits & performance warnings were added to the game, primarily to help server admins maintain their servers more easily. And there we have it.

The main reason the serbian chugs along is not scripts, refineries, not even grids, but block count. The overall block count and subsequent updates to them is what's killing performance as the number one reason. Keep in mind that number 2, 3 and 4 still contribute. The time shown is the last occurance of that performance issue being an active issue. The screenshot was taken about a minute after loading in, so those initial timers are meaningless. My PC also running the entire module locally doesn't help the renderer, so ignore that - that's personal problems.

But the 0:00 behind the block count is a very distinct reason as to where our performance loss comes from.

Which means: Exuberant and Denorra need to stop with their medium ships (RIP), and no more 9000 blocks super stations.

The game world currently contains a rough eestimate of 75000 blocks. Give or take 15000, SEToolbox broke, I can't check. If we limit this to X per player, Y per grid, we can make some massive headway on this matter.

>>
Alright, after some tests with the new dev branch, I'll sit down tomorrow and prepare a new world file, with block limits in place.

After some considerations with a hanful of players, we're gonna go with two limits.

Per player: 5000 blocks.
Per grid: 5000 blocks.

That means, a faction can pool their alotments together and build a station/mothership/etc. together, while still having spare blocks to build their own shit with. It also means that a solo player can build a smaller ship/station/etc. and still have blocks for utility craft, like miners, welders, grinders, dildos.

There will be additional limits, to reduce pull requests and staunch industry, with the intentional effect of postponing the post-scarcity situation, affecting refineries and assemblers. A faction will, again, be able to stack their alotments to make a combined grid/refinery center. It also means that each player of a faction contributes to a whole, which should make faction play a bit more involved.

This should reduce grids by virtue of people actually cleaning up to get their blocks back, and since I will enable remote deletion, it'll allow EVERYONE to clean up their debris from the K menu at will.

As a result, the module should be more manageable in grid and block count, data, loadtimes, etc.

A further measure will be the abandonment of all but one planet. Since the voxels eat up a lot of RAM and a serbian hitting it's RAM limit will start cycling content in and out, at the expense of CPU cycles, this'll reduce the load. Also, the asteroid density will be reduced from normal to low density.

Additionally, I'll add a 4th Sparky, one that can land on a regular blaned, so it will be possible to start fresh at the center and then fly directly towards Klendathu. That's also the decision - we'll have Klendathu as our single planet. It has deserts, mountains, snowy poles and ayys. Out of all vanilla blaneds, certainly the most diverse.
>>
>>155492630
Addendum: Meteors hitting blaneds cause voxel changes, cause voxel map bloat. It seems like we have the choice of "blaneds, no meteors" or "meteors, no blaneds".

Meteors will be turned off. I am sure everyone is sad about it.

They are 2 separated games.
Ftd is way more complex in the weapons, ammunition and other stuff.
Spungos is way to simple with that, a battery needs to be connected to a jet thrusters via "metal plates" to convert it into jet fuel and power the turbine.
Kek, its not the worst, but could improve, man made weapons in spengos end up in "OP" shit or "not even try" shit.

having seven trillion types of blocks you have to select individually from a massive list in the worlds worst GUI isn't good

I guess you mean the keyboard build? it's ok I guess, but it's just an overly complicated method of building long lines

at least with the latest spongler updates you have block groups so you only need to select the armor block to place most kinds of armor

it lacks the convenience of spengies block groups, and the elegance of minecraft where blocks of different materials share the same shapes

>>
Hi /egg/
I'm a newbie, just bought spengies. And, well...

I think I just met clang..
I felt his presence, the world ground to a halt, my charachter frozy. Then.. CLANG
My ship was catapulted into the air, did a little loop-di-loop and fell back down, crumbling into bits. A tree went spinning wildly out of control, and then everything was still.
The worst part was that I could see the little RCS thrusters firing wildly as it was thrown upwards, desperately trying to wrestle control away from CLANG. But half of them were gone from the initial jolt, and the rest burned bravely but exploded with the rest of the ship.
There's nothing left.

oh, if it's hardcoded in spengies you could rebind the steam overlay screenshot key(which can be rebound)
or if you don't want to get used to a different key you could use autohotkey to remap F12 to scrollLock(or any other key you can live without, scroll lock seems pretty unpopular) in Spengies, and F12+Scroll lock outside. Then set the steam screenshot key to Scroll lock. If you still want access to developer mode you'll have to remap another key to F12 as well. (Autohotkey supports conditions like active window etc. for key remapping)

and it does in fact have center of mass. Thrust simply operates directly upon it at all times. Anything else that might possibly involve it still works.

>these fucking textfields next to sliders
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
it's literally impossible to enter 100
because if you enter 210 and then try to delete the 2 it sets it to 20, which is the minimum. If you try to add a 0 to 210 it sets it to 500, which is the maximum.
And it's not that hard to fix, have a text input and only after it's lost focus or the user pressed enter or whatever you parse the number and enforce minimum/maximum, NOT while the user is still typing.
this is such UX garbage, i have no idea why this is so popular.

>this is such UX garbage
The old Unity UI library is a fucking atrocity. It's simple to get started with but its concepts are simply broken and don't scale past trivial stuff. You may have to write your own code just to figure out what was actually clicked (leading to clicks falling through things and/or not being registered) and I don't think it's any better at handling text input events. I guess the developer has to also handle DPI scaling manually because the library sure isn't doing it, with that blurry text everywhere.

I'm not really sure what the dev is getting out of mutilating the shitty engine into running his game when none of its parts are good for it. It's always going to stutter from GC with fucking voxel block logic written in C# / Mono, the UI is going to keep sucking and it kind of looks like he had to write his own code for the terrain and water, too.

If there were more characters or cinematic shit I suppose having tools for those might be neat, but those have no place among the clang anyway.

I like the idea of having a rapid firing gun on a small ship and underwater torpedoes (those are torpedoes right?)

I was trying to build a vertical launch torpedo system on the bigger ship but failed miserably.

Give your PT boat a bit more of a defined shape and it should look much nicer (also a paintjob, it changes everything, my ships looked like shit before painting them white, with a black stripe and a red bottom hull.

Creeper World series. Basically tower defense games where your enemy is fluid pouring out of hoses.
>>
>>155523876
I should add, if you're new to building, try building a ship around 80-100 meters long, in the campaign, that is how both of my designs came to life, the first one was a ship i built with 7k resources (and then turned into a 33k material ship) and the second is just a retrofit of the first.
>>
>>155524201
>>155523574
I can recommend Creeper World as far as 'liquid' dispersal mechanics go, but other than that it's quite literally just Tower Defense and map management.

>>155525182
Nah, a RTS can fuck you over if you don't manage in time, Creeper World you can keep going indefinitely just by setting up good, since the enemy spawning is (mostly) static
