From what I understand, he wants to catch the PT(probably working for his dad) and yet in the end his dad fucks him over and he decides he wants revenge on his dad, except he just dies in a really anticlimactic fashion as a hamfisted "redemption" in a game about getting revenge against the evil adults and FRIENDSHIP as everyone called him their nakama

Like, it seemed like he was being manipulated by his father, so, why did he have to die and his father, who the game drills into our heads as a very bad person, doesn't? And then they don't even acknowledge him in the epilogue or credits?

It's perfect, when you think about it:

They can bring him back, using "he was just missing" as an excuse... or keep him dead.

The fact that what happened with Goro feels relatively empty, unsatisfying, and ambiguous is completely intentional. It's the one time the game asks the player to read between the lines (what happens to Ryuji and Morgana are hints, also the fact you dont see him die)

If you are confused or disappointed, you simply dont realize that they gave you the player the responsibility of Goro's fate, at least until they do something like a spinoff or Golden.

if anything the 'shadows' of 3 and 4 were the real cut corners because so many were pallette-swaps of each other, and had simpler designs than most demons.

Well look at it this way:
SMT3 Nocturne, the first Megaten game on the PS2, had around 185 obtainable demons.
P5, the first on the PS3/PS4, has at least 150 with a few more to add on to that via special fusions and ingredient demons.

A 2D game like SMTIV or Apocalypse will have like 425 but that's because it's just artwork, doesn't have to be re-done much.

The more i think about Persona 5's plot, the more it reminds me of a Yakuza game. Goro literally reminds me of any one of the antagonists from that series who redeems themselves in the end, and the quadruple ruses and wild rides too. Even the fact that the protag goes to prison for a bit for the sake of X reminds me of when Saejima decides to go to prison in 5.
