They fixed a lot of the problems that SMTIV had.

Gameplay isn't quite as absurdly fast, certain mechanics have been touched up on and most all builds are decent (magic is by far the best though).

The supporting cast is also much better and more developed.

Magic is the easiest way to exploit all elemental weaknesses. Later on, it's also the highest reliable non-elemental DPS. A crit build can potentially do more, but that's a crit build and so isn't reliable.

Also, there are tons of great physical demons, but magic ones with more than a single natural element are rare till the midgame.

Mephisto traps the cast in an illusion of a tropical paradise. And when Nanashi denies the illusion, Dagda shows ups and breaks it, allowing you to kick Mephisto's ass. Everyone is actually kind of sad that the illusion's fading, since none of them had ever experienced such a simple, enjoyable thing as playing in the sea.

Then Dagda goes full grumpy old man and says that an illusion of that caliber can be easily maintained by a god of illusions such as he, and that they can return there to train (relax) whenever they wish.

Doi's talked about other conflicts in the team, too. There's a number of 'conservatives' that basically want mainline to be the same over and over: teenage boy protagonist in Tokyo in the post-apocalypse. Doi mentioned the idea of having a female protagonist or setting a game in a foreign city to be interesting, but the conservative members didn't like the ideas. They were the ones that pushed for Nanashi to be a teenager instead of the original adult design.
