Zarya has no armor and the lowest HP of all the tanks.
She mitigates damage by applying a shield. Either
>You don't shoot the shield for 2 seconds
or
>You treat the target as if it has an extra 200 health, and you deal with Zarya's increased damage

She does 95 DPS at 0 charge, and 190 at maximum charge. If you feel that her damage is too strong, then you're shooting her shields too much without reasonable payoff (ie. you aren't killing what is getting shielded to make it worth hurting the shield)

If you feel that her protection levels are too strong because you have to wait 2 seconds after something is shielded, then you're not giving fair credit to Zarya's role as a tank, where comparitively Reinhardt is a walking 2000 shield barrier, Winston can drop an 800 barrier which lasts 5 seconds, and D.Va can stop all but the 4 beam attacks for 4 seconds.

Junkrat is probably the most natural counter to Tracer, but he's a very limited hero.
Pharah is just a terrible hero with a million counters and no love from Blizzard.
and Hanzo just doesn't matter enough to the flow of the game, there are other characters that can do what he does and then some more.

You don't get cards and potgs for ultimates blocked, unless you block an absurd amount like 22k damage (got that pre-nerf). When ults are eaten, barely anyone on your team registers what happened except the teammates who are also D.Va players

I'm very close to hitting rank 25 and being able to play ranked games. I'm new to Overwatch but not new to games like it. I've played a fair bit MOBAs and FPSs over the years.

What should I know before playing my placement matches? What characters should I choose and/or which styles of play should I employ to boost how I'm placed?

I've made friends with a number of players in QP who have been playing OW for months and they've been helpful with explaining some things, but I don't like bothering them with too many questions. So I was wondering if there's like a tutorial along the lines of "okay you're already familiar with concepts in competitive online games, metagame, roles, teamplay, etc., so here's the fine details of how those work together in OW".

Something like that in a wiki page or in a ~20 minute long youtube video, etc.

I've figured some of the metagame from my 15 or so hours of QP like basic class counters. But that's clearly not a very complete understanding.

I basically just don't want to end up being placed in the knuggledragger ranks where I'm then stuck in ELO hell, where both teams use dumb meta tactics and I never learn how to play correctly.

I'd say McCree or Soldier 76. The 76 will be more forgiving to ease you into it and McCree will really test your aim and it's important to land headshots. Throw some Reaper into the mix too to get better at close-range fighting which will require wider sweeps of the mouse.

Also don't forget to try out the projectile characters like Pharah, but I think hitscanners are a good starting point.

Remember, a lower mouse sens is generally better since it will reduce the impact of any jitters/twitches you have while aiming and will also make it easier to fine-tune your aim on small/distant targets without overshooting it with a slight movement. Being able to turn rapidly in Overwatch is pretty important of course, so finding a happy medium between precision and speed is important.

Here are a few basic tips.

Always have your shield up for a reason, never just because. Either to protect your team from threats as you get closer to the objective or to a safer position, or because you're expecting to block an Enemy Ult. Don't treat it like an impenetrable bunker, because it isn't, and let it regenerate whenever threats are dealt with.

Don't charge the entire enemy team at once and expect good results. The Charge should be used sparingly, generally to punish an enemy chasing you that you know is about to turn a corner, or during close-range fights to pick off distracted stragglers that are focusing on your team mates. It's not uncommon for enemies to see you retreating with your shield raised, think they have the initiative, and then get careless and open to getting bashed against a wall.

In Reinhardt vs. Reinhardt matchups, Earthshatter is the ultimate punishment tool. Firestrike ignores barriers, so generally you want to fire it off at the enemy team whenever you can. But Earthshatter does not, so you always want to keep your barrier up when you expect it coming. That means that, whenever you have your earthshatter up, just wait for the enemy Reinhardt to fire off a firestrike and quickly pop your ult, which is guaranteed to stun him and whatever he is protecting before he's able to deploy the shield again.

It's also important to have good threat awareness and knowing WHAT you should prioritize protecting your team from.

Medals don't mean much but at the same time the MM system is so fucked right now that even if you are a GM level player you're going to get people on your team who you simply cannot win with.

I've been fighting through Diamond and it's been simply terrible, lots of really salty people who throw games if they don't get to play a specific hero, people who tilt and stop playing, mainers who can't help the team because they only play 1 hero, and rank 50's from last season who somehow got gifted a diamond placement and refuse to switch off DPS. There are many situations where it's all down to your MM luck in whether or not you can win the game with the teammates it gives you.

I've made it to masters but I can assure you the only way to reliable level up is to group with friends and other good players, generally no more than a 3 man group. The idea here is that with each good player you group with it lowers the chances you get bad players on your team who you can't win with.

The MM system tries to match you with groups of equal size. The issue here is that it focuses on size and not rank so if you queue up as 6 with a 3050 average you could very well get put against a 6 man with a 3600 average. I'm not sure if they kept this from last season but you also got less points per win with larger parties. If you watch any streamers that do 4 man groups you can see them constantly get put into games where the other team is a 200-400 point underdog, it's real messy.

This also goes along with longer queue times and all that mess, if you stick with 3 man groups you'll only go against solo, duo, and trios and can avoid all 4-5-6 man stacks.

I just had game where my team was entirely made up of <100s (lowest being 37) in a QP game while the enemy team was at least 200.

Level doesn't equal skill but it certainly a good measure of game knowledge and experience.

Genji can still deal an insane amount of damage very quickly with very little skill giving him the upper hand in every 1v1.

I swear I feel like Genji's hitbox is broken seeing as how I down Zens from miles away in 2-3 shots, yet I can hit Genji up to five times at close range, seeing his health go down, but in increments I'd expect to see with Roadhog at 30+ meters, not in a 200HP character.

None of what you said changes the fact that he is pretty much immune to flashbangs.

The change you want is simple: flashbang stops momentum. This sets McCree up to have a poor man's hook combo, since you can reliably predict where to shoot after landing it. As it stands, the flashbang stun just makes the enemy stumble a bit, but because it doesn't stop enemies in their tracks you can't always use it to line up a perfect shot. Especially against Genji, who jumps constantly.

McCree just is not a good counter to Genji. He's better off keeping the enemy Reaper from hard countering Winston while he keeps Genji from effectively doing his job.
