What do you guys think of the rebooted Naugus? I still find him enjoyable and the current fight with him in Sonic Universe is really cool but I still feel cheated.

I found the previous Naugus story much more interesting. He won, he was king of the castle! Sonic and friends couldn't wage a proper politics war against him because they were busy with other adventures so he got to continue sitting in the thrown,Geoffrey was such a good antagonist that it was infuriating, and Naugus having an identity crisis with three other beings inside him fighting for control was interesting. I was really excited to see where it would all go. But then the space time event happened and he literally runs out of the castle so the politics plot is done with, his identity crisis isn't brought up again, Geoffrey vanishes from continuity so he'll never get his comeuppance, and that's the end. I do like his new sister and how she became a member of Eggman's Dozen but I still feel that we lost a lot.

Anyone else disappointed? And I'm sorry if this has already been discussed several times, I just recently got caught up on the comics.

- Sonic and Eggman have to team up to try and stop them
- Tails gets fucking roboticized

There's plenty in there to make for a good story, they just flubbed everything after the core concepts.

True. But Mania is the first classic game made by Taxman that was built from the ground up. Practically, its nearly an entirely different game than the Sonic 1, 2, and CD remakes, and as can be seen through most of its gameplay videos, it uses elements that haven't been seen anywhere previously in the franchise, likely tooled to each character's gameplay style.

Even if someone does recreate a character for Mania, not only would they have to learn Mania's format, but they'd have to make sure it can play through every level, beginning to end, easily.

The first part can be made easy through studying Taxman's remakes, but the second would take some testing.

It's got a lot to do with tone. The games tend to slide around the scale of serious vs. cartoony a lot, and SA2 was close enough to the serious side for Shadow's death to be legit. I think Naka said that they wanted to do more with Shadow after SA2 and didn't really intend to kill him off, but the story would be a lot better off if they did. I mean,

Sega for all their faults have some excellent female characters in the games, and it never felt like pandering.
Alis Landale from PS1, Alys Brann something from 4, Alissa Cyan Comix Zone, Faye Lee Binary Domain etc etc, they're all pretty strong characters.
And Sonic's cast is full of characters who are balanced in flaws, even if stereotypical for their characters because it's a kids game.

Still runs on Retro Engine. It shouldn't be any harder to modify than the remakes assuming there haven't been major changes to the engine that make replacing sprites or modifying character values harder. Stuff like new stage stage elements are probably placeable objects and scripts that should work the same with any hypothetical character mod, as long as the physics remained intact (and I really fail to see why changing physics values would be a necessary part of a character mod).

Still, there aren't any mods for the remakes that add anything like new abilities, so someone has to figure out how to do that. Sonic Retro always finds a way, though.
