It's been awhile since i've fought him (or played 3U, for that matter), but i remember having fun hunting him in Misty peaks. I eventually got to the point of "getting good" against him, and could predict what he would do and fight back.

adept is the best for damage.
Push-up reload and strong slam are the gunlance's strongest attacks and are exclusive to adept.
Adept gives gunlance the ability to be in the monster's face the entire time without having to worry about massive chip damage and getting guard combo'd.
Dragon's breath just locks your heat gauge and increases shell damage, if you're not a shitter you can just keep your heat gauge in red on your own without having to wait for dragon's breath to charge.
and you STILL get to use absolute readiness for positioning.

Depends on what you consider newbie friendly.
Even though the recent games have been trying harder to ease up new players on the mechanics, there's a lot of stuff that isn't given enough importance.
There's a lot of content on the internet on how everything in the games works, but the problem is if you have the drive to look it all up.
There's also a lot of people who's willing to teach new players how to properly play the game, but many people don't like to be spoonfed like that and end up being turned off.
Playing the Caravan in MH4U is the best way to get into the series, as it gives you micro tutorials along with an ok story to keep you invested. After that, you search info on whatever you're missing and from there it's natural.

Stop this self-described elitist mh bullshit. MH is not a difficult game to understand how to play. The games are poorly designed with incongruities between unconsolidated mechanics, largely unrewarding for the amount of time you put in versus what you get out of it. These games are the kind of shit that make pre-teens and autistic people seriously think they've accomplished some super-human feat of skill by "mastering" a single weapon or a monster when you're looking at fewer than 20 unique moves between both combined.
There is no minumum playtime someone needs to experience monster hunter for in order to come to an impression or conclusion about it, and there is no maximum playtime that wont stop anyone else from calling them a shitter.
Between FU, Tri, 3U, 4U and Gen, i've dumped at least 1000 hours into these games and i /still/ fucking can't stand how poorly designed they are. Gen is actually the first and only MH i've ever played that is actually fun to play, but Gen is also the only fuckin MH with absolutely fuck-all for decent end-game content so the most fun MH is also the shortest and fastest to get old and boring.
I would sympathize with anyone who hated the games after just a single hour of play much less 1000, regardless of whichever game they started with.

I spent a while adjusting them, I think what I did was the most fair
if you made normal shells have a MV of 15, on a 220 raw weapon:
Each shell on it's own would do 33 damage
Each fullburst would do 181, which isn't too bad
but if you start stacking the artillery skills and such:
Dragon's breath makes the fullburst do 236
add load up makes it do 284 damage
add artillery expert to those two and your full bursts are doing 341 damage
eat for felyne bombardier and your fullbursts are doing 375 damage
the Tigrex GS with a crit draw + crit boost set on a 45 hitzone (while holding the charms, eating for AuL, eating a might seed and a mega demondrug):
259 * 1.3 * .45 * (1+(.85 * 1.4)) * 1.32 *.85 = 372 damage.
if this was a G-Rank game, the defense modifier would make you do even less.
Like hell capcom would make the gunlance fullburst ever do more than a GS charge.
Fullbursts would be too strong seeing as you wouldn't even need to aim for the weakpoint to do that much damage.

Stygian Zinogre is mostly just disliked because it's annoying as fuck due to shitting out Dragonblight constantly. Of course, the usual "don't get hit" applies but that's made a little bit more difficult by those psuedo-homing projectiles, and the lack of openings as >>155005032 mentioned.
