x-com really gives you alot of firepower from the start. A 14 man rookie squad with no advanced tech packs enough firepower to take on most aliens in a landed battleship if played well. The ability to take losses and still maintain combat effectiveness is a huge deal too.
Once you get your tactics down, you're pretty secure because you can reduce rng down to the point where results are very consistent.

Even firepower isn't that much of an issue if you can hit an alien with 3-4 soldiers per turn. Unless it's completely immune to damage of your weapons it'll go down fine.

I'm the opposite way around. I love the the new XCOMs make me care so much for my troops. I wish I could get as attached to my x-com soldiers. I still strive to make every mission a zero casualty op if it's not a large landed or terror mission. Even then I shoot for 2-3 casualties max.

The early DLC missions were kinda annoying how they just endlessly spawn monsters.

It's best not to bother with the DLCs on your first campaign. If you really want to do them, best time to do Shen's is when you get mag rifles, then wait for armor before doing Vahlen.
You can wait till T3 if you really want to, the missions won't expire, but where's the fun in that?

Don't do them. Leave them active but leave them be.
General consensus is to wait until mags for both missions.
Alien rulers mission is easy barring the last fight, but the other rulers will fuck you up if you're still on ballistics.
Last encounter of Shen's gift is hilarious if you're on ballistics, but doable.
You'll die well before that if you're in legendary without mags.

I've done the first Shen mission with ballistics and no deaths but it was such a pain.

Nades only destroy loot if they're used as the killing blow. Using them to soften up a group and removing their cover is not a problem.
Also, there's only one loot drop per mission, no need to hold back if it dropped already.

What kind of medium ship was it? Most medium ships are military, and will have more skilled soldiers with better armor and weapons. The asterisk-shaped envoy ships are medium and the occupants will usually have top tier weapons like gauss rifles and plasma cannons.

If you're early on, your best bet for taking out military targets is probably spamming grenades, molotov cocktails, and other explosives from a safe distance or behind obstacles. Infantry armor offers little protection against even the weakest.

Note the cruising speed of ships, it lets you ID them without having a decoder. Easier ships cruise at a lower speed, so look for things like freighters, which are large and valuable but have a civilian crew, traveling at 1400 knots.

The wound times are pretty extreme because of the higher amount of health that your girls have. Try to get a medbay and surgery lab asap in your troop base.

Panic is poorly implemented in new XCOM in general, but that's because a small squad makes it very difficult to do well. Long War does it best, but it's still a band-aid fix. X2 does it better then X1.

The way I see it, a panicked soldier should have 60% chance to simply hunker and stay put until the panic wears off, 25% chance to run away from visible enemies and then hunker when they're out of attack range, 10% chance to take a shot at a visible enemy, and 5% to take a shot at a friend.

Still not perfect, but at least it wouldn't have our soldiers making out-of-turn attacks all the time.

I guess. I don't really have a problem with it, it usually still screws you. You'll notice the shot hit in that webm is against a out of cover soldier while he's using a shotgun. It rarely helps you and simulates panic fire pretty well.

I think you have a valid point, maybe just like a 70 30 split. Honestly removing friendly fire was for the best. It only works in og x-com because:
-expendable soldiers
-large squads
-panic comes from lot's of people dying and psi attacks (rarely from getting hit)
-free aim means that your guys aren't actually aiming at each other

To that anon, if you're around, I started up that new campaign I mentioned and just hit the salvaged ADVENT gear. The Trooper Armor gives +1 health over Kevlar, which is handy, and the rifles are actually pretty solid for how cheap they are (flat 5 damage). The downsides are that the other armors are locked in the Proving Grounds and there aren't any other weapons.

Also, if you're an autist like I am, the fact that they have no customization options (seriously) may bother you. They override your customizations, just like the Ruler armors do. It's kinda annoying.

Can I skip the first progeny mission ( playing EW, vanilla ) the first time it appears ?

I havent played in a very long time ( have like 100 hours in vanilla EU, then I bought EW and barely played it ), but I remember this mission, I remember the asspain, of facing a dozen thin men while trying to escort a dude.

I have a rank 2 support, rank 2 rocket-man, rank 1 sniper and commando, and honestly I still dont think I should accept it.

I just dont want to miss this chain of events, I disabled slingshot for this playthrough tho cause I remember the 3 missions were lame, and the first one just as annoying as progeny.

Last question, how is xcom 2 regarding line of sight ?

Worse. The one improvement is that there is a los indicator now. It's worse though because it will randomly break, letting you and enemies see/shoot through walls and ceilings. The issue isn't that you can't see people who you should be able to, the issue is that everyone can see way more than they should.

I've honestly had the same problem with vanilla and rangers. As soon as you get mimic beacon, a t2 shotgun and that camera grenade, they make the whole game too easy.
But XCOM's "flight envelope" is made in such a way there is only a very narrow area between too easy and too hard. And it's not something that can be easily fixed with a mod, it's simply how the game's made.

I believe it was an attempt to balance them as opposed to EU, where a psionic soldier was simply better than a non-psionic soldier, similar to gene modded soldiers.

An attempt that failed, as psionics are the best class in 2 and you could easily field a team of 6 of them. But I can't judge them too hard as it's very difficult to balance psi abilities. I think I prefer LW's approach of adding the officer sub class, and making gene mods, psionics, and officers mutually exclusive.

Depends on the engi. Forsmoke nade engis, toss up between supression and will to survive. For sapper engis, I go will to survive since they need to be closer to the fight to make use of their nades. And then at least one engi takes repair just for capture raid missions. That's my choices/logic.

I use them for all my missions. Might as well call them flak troopers. No other unit beats them early and mid-game at removing flying threats. The key to them is all about placement and how you move through the map. Early game motion scanners really help. Once you get battlescanner and concealment scouts then they are never out of position, and then if you want you can do crazy things like initiating fights across the entire map with shredder rockets.
Plus they lead to Archer MECs.
I use Commander's choice to pick out higher aim (usually lower health since they are'nt frontline) soldiers and them give them scopes asap so that each rocket is more accurate and so they can serve as discount infantry.
Obviously early game you have to steady them.

So yeah, early game they reduce drone and seekers to scrap, remove cover, and help purge floaters.
Mid game they are excellent for anti-mech vs. cyberdiscs and mechtoids with heat rockets and shredders.
Late game they can do huge damage, never really miss even without steady, and start excellent engages, or be turned into MECs

I think that is dependent entirely on each individual cosmetic. Though, I suppose if the Hockey mask was classified as an upper face prop, that probably wouldn't remove the hair. I bet the one that does remove the hair is coded as a helmet. Just a guess though, I don't do any modding myself.

The main thing about the spark that I have learned after getting two of them asploded is that they are NOT for shooting, in the regular sense.
Their main usefulness stems from their abilities once you get a few missions under their belt.
I find that keeping them off missions entirety until at least tier 2 armor/weapons are available to it, as well as using the Aid protocol on it whenever you get a chance. Really extends their survivability seeing as how they cannot use cover like other units

They're a force enhancer, think of them as more of an IFV than a tank

I was playing with lots of mods so their role in pure vanilla is certainly different, but I found with getting them lategame & the enlarged pods and ABA (to the point that pods were 5 men minimum, and then later on 7 men max and often minimum) that I needed cheets to make them competitive with my units.

All you really needed for the spark is:
-Let them modify their weapon
-carry an item (I forget if they were able to or not in vanilla).

Since that alone means you can slap a scope on their rifle (+10 to +20 aim) and throw either a tracer round +10 aim or body armor +1 armor or +2 HP on them.

The aim thing was critical, as their aim was atrocious compared to your fleshbags and with their sheer cost they hardly offered a role comparable to SHIVs in Xcom1. Didn't help I had not created equal meaning my boys and girls has eagle-eyed aim.

Add that though? Hoo shit baby. If I remember my Spark right late of late games it was something like: 3-5 shield, 5 armor, 14 HP. -That- actually let it assume something akin to the role of the Goliath and such from Long dong.

Even then it wasn't quite as impressive as my A-Team

One overwatch trap that does work is a redux of the beagle strategy. Have a unit (ranger or shinobi) able to either re-enter concealment after breaking it or who maintains concealment when the squad breaks it. This is your spotter. Position him up ahead where he can see an enemy pod on patrol. Have him in a position where he won't be discovered, hunker down or whatever. Sniper is able to use squad-sight to hit the enemy pod when it moves on patrol automatically.

They spend their entire turn moving towards your squad, who have been set up in overwatch, and then it is your turn without the aliens being able to fire a shot so far.

To be honest, as someone who has played tons of x-com and xcom, X1 and X2 legendary are way harder then og x-com. I'm currently rolling through my x-com superhuman ironman campaign, but I've never attempted X1 Impossible and X2 Legendary has stumped me a few times.

There is another way aswell if you don't yet have a way to re-enter concealment with a trooper.

Once the first concealment-breaking fight has been won, I use one trooper to move iny-tiny bit forward turn at a time and very carefully avoiding suspected visual range of pods. Sooner or later the A.I gets bored and moves in a pod and straight into your overwatching squad.

Not easily. If you are trying hard, always make sure to end their turn with no vision of any one. If you are in a position of control and know your troops are in no danger, there is also a button that reduces their time units to zero. You have to right click it on the UI since they didn't want you to accidentally hit it.

Another operation I launched immediately after the last one, this time on a landed sectoid terror ship. Half rookies, and down two men because I couldn't fill the skyranger due to the deaths and wounds from last mission.
I don't think I'm going to finish this campaign. Once I get to half a squad of fully trained psi soldiers, I'll probably just call it a win. No need to go through that boring slog.

Don't go in thinking you are top shit for beating EW. Just go in and start learning from your mistakes and read up or watch beagles Long War campaigns. I still haven't seen anyone beat the airgame into submission like I can.

Yeah, thank E3245 for that. Oddly enough his Deus Ex music mod seems to have taken over completely. I don't know if MMS has a randomizer but the Halo songs barely play anymore. Occasionally I here XCOM 2's music. Never hear EU/EW and X-COM though.

I sort of wish you could do more crawling around inside large alien spacecraft and large ADVENT buildings. Even when doing facility raids, most of the time I've found it's easier just to spam explosives until most of the structure, and its defenders, are rubble, then send someone in to plant the X4. You don't really get to do the cool room-by-room sweeps you did in Enemy Unknown.

Hidden facilties would be neat but since they control the planet they just declare then black sights and not need to care if it's above ground or not, more missions in towers like the spark mission would be a good place to start, factory raids that actually have objectives relating to what the dark event does would be a good goal

Yep. I'm using some russian site (just search xcom mods ru and it should be the first result) to download steam mods since the nexus versions are all outdated but they haven't uploaded ragdoll redux yet.

Careful with hunker down against mutons cause they might throw grenades.

I have some tips:
>space out your soldiers when you overwatch or they will all shoot the same guy
>half cover is no cover
>scout with an invisible soldier and hit them with your sniper before they even see you
>use your grenades to destroy their cover
>remember to fall back and regroup if you can't kill the entire pod before they act
>Ayys WILL crit your soldiers and one-hit kill them behind full cover, so what you do is you don't let them act in the first place. Kill every one you can and the ones you can't you flashbang or supress instead. Don't waste your last turn(s) chipping away at their health.

If you're playing impossible, you should move at least two tiles around an obstacle so the enemy can no longer see you (and you can no longer see you), since their accuracy is much increased on that difficulty.

Hunker can save lives, it's definitely worth using, but what our friend up there isn't telling you is that you want to break line of sight more often than hunkering. Hunker reduces their chance to hit, but you want to ensure they can't take a shot without overextending in the first place. That's what he means by 'no other actions available.' Overwatch only reliably pins certain ayylmaos, others won't give a shit, so you want some experience in knowing what aliens will do in various situations before you try relying on it. Other than that, keep all your units together. You're right to only blue move, but you want to either activate with the first soldier you move, or not activate that turn at all. For that reason, don't be afraid to end your turn out of cover and on overwatch. Splitting your snipers off can be dangerous, but as long as you know a pod won't patrol into them while your fireteam is far away, squadsight is useful.

be wary of spacing, some enemies can use aoe attacks so try to keep some distance between your troops to minimize the chance of them using them and the damage that can do

overwatch can be used as a deterrent to the enemy
basically they will think twice to run overwatch even if its a one eyed drunk rookie who is doing the overwtch, use that to your advantage to force the enemy to stay put but beware of enemies that do not use cover those will move no matter what and will eat all your overwatch and also the ai can decide to run the overwatch if it wants or thinks it can gain something out of it so dont put yourself on a situation where its vital for the enemy to not move because of overwatch

Alright, it worked.

You can only have 3 skills per level so you need to replace one of these:
>pistol standard shot
>comissar
>light'em up

comissar is kinda useless so you can safely replace it, but light em up is vital and pistol standard shot is replaceable if you want to completely remove the pistol and trade it for melee (which would make the ranger a less effective and redundant assault), otherwise you're stuck with either "Slash" (attack guy near you) or "SwordSlice" (fleche + running attack at the same time somehow??) and then you can replace the pistol skills with melee skills in each rank if you choose to replace pistol standard shot.
