August 20th. The aliens have made another rapid deployment push across the world, and XCOM's roster of field operatives is once again pushed to the limits of fatigue. Just as the Commander starts to breathe easy, the North American satellite network simultaneously picks up two UFOs, a Scout and Raider class, vectoring for rapid landings in Canada and the US.

Blue team will be fully ready to deploy soon, but in the meantime the Commander has to draft a team from whoever's available to tackle the alien ambush waiting at the landed Scout class. Capt. Jenkins of White team and four of her squadmates are ready to deploy, they will be augmented by Sgt. Redmond of Gold team and two inexperienced blueshirts from HQ.

Big Sky manages to find just enough clearance to drop off the mixed squad near a densely forested little hill. Immediately upon stepping out of the LZ, the squad realizes that the Commander has sent them to the wrong AO. Next to the Raider-class UFO, a cyberdisc and its robotic cohorts wait, while Sgt. Stackhouse picks up five more contacts on the motion tracker.

The squad collapses inward and moves to engage the unknown enemies on the hill beyond the Meld canister. As they move, the ominous hums of the cyberdisc can be heard, as well as the roars of mutons and a heavy, mechanical stomping the operatives have never heard before.

As the squad moves up, Stackhouse signals for a halt as three enormous, armored mutons come charging over the hill, while two of the grunts take position behind them. Cpl. Hamilton hurls a chem grenade into their path, slowing them down while Jenkins shouts orders.

Geez, what a horrible mission. I didn't expect there to be a heavy floaters pod AND a 2 disk pod behind those muton elites, so I had to fight the whole map.

Then the disks popped out from the alley, one of them reduced my assault to one HP, so that was fun... fortunately most enemies were keen on missing my shiv. I had to defuse the bomb during the battle.

The forest explodes into laser fire as the squad focuses their fire to annihilate the armored mutons. A heavily wounded berserker survives the barrage. In response, the mutons fire back and lob a plasma grenade at Stackhouse, blowing up the log blocking the berserker's path. If the berserker wasn't sitting at 1hp, Stackhouse would be dead, but the synthesized poison paralyzes the weakened muton. Redmond and Stackhouse pick off the remaining grunts while Cpl. Hamilton walks up to the helpless beast, lamenting the fact that he didn't bring an arc thrower.

The ambush doesn't go so well. The disc breaks line of sight, closing its shell and hiding its profile behind a tree. The squad kills two drones, but the seeker cloaks and the cyberdisc rises high above and uses its plasma grenade to bomb Stackhouse, Maslov and Jenkins. If Redmond hadn't damaged the disc in the initial exchange of fire, the surviving drone might have killed him on the spot.

The shooting continues back and forth for nearly half a minute. Spec. Tina Avery has the armor piercing rounds, but the squad can't trust the blueshirt's marksmanship, so she suppresses the disc while the squad peels apart the disc's heavy armor slowly but surely, and eventually it goes down. Jenkins keeps an eye on the UFO for enemies joining the fight, but nothing emerges. The aliens seem determined to concentrate their forces within.

The Stalker uncloaks next to sniper Redmond, who's been providing overwatch and taking shots at the disc from afar. He's completely isolated and his rifle is empty, and instead of being ensnared in the robot's tentacles, he gets hit at point blank with a plasma blast to the chestplate. Stackhouse dashes across the dry riverbed toward the sniper, firing haphazardly as he goes.

The squad loads its weapons and Sgt. Boyd makes a troubling report as he heals Capt. Jenkins' plasma burns. The team is completely out of medikits now. They aren't quite in position to recon the rest of the UFO's perimeter when three mutons suddenly open the door. One roars and pounds its chest with a closed fist, charging straight into reaction fire and skidding across the forest floor.

These mutons are more in line with the grunts XCOM usually encounters, and the team has no trouble putting them down before they can get to cover and properly assess their situation. Before Maslov can continue to scout the remainder of the UFO's perimeter, Capt. Jenkins continues forward, shouting that she and Boyd have a clear entrance. The squad can either enter the UFO and begin fighting their way through, or back up and regroup before taking position on Redmond's hill and checking the UFO's port side.

Boyd, Maslov and Stackhouse move around to cover the outside of the UFO while Avery and Jenkins take down the sectoid. But the damage is done; that little alien has stalled the team enough for the enemy mech to join the fight. Not only is this the first of these units we've seen, there's something different about those two sectoids there, too...

As Maslov charges into the UFO, ready to duck any plasma he sees coming his way, he gets a lot more than he bargained for. The enemy mech's plasma cannon unleashes a barrage of the stuff that obliterates the wall the squad is stacked up behind. Jenkins charges forward, only to nearly bite it as a muton hiding in the engine room fires at her. Stackhouse is forced to sprint into the engine room and blast it, committing us to a very close range fight with these new alien contacts.

Avery charges in next, taking hard cover and blasting the mech pilot at close range to keep him suppressed. Jenkins looks the new sectoid in the eyes and doesn't wait to blast it in the chest, but it merely takes the blast and scampers away. Hamilton charges across the central chamber and presses against the exterior hull to prep a chem grenade, but two outsiders spot him moving and join the battle. The mech pilot blind fires his cannons, tearing more of the UFO's hull out, and activates some sort of energy shield.

Stackhouse and Trujillo check the motion tracker and begin moving through the central chamber of the Raider for a flanking maneuver, certain that all hostiles are now being engaged. Boyd steps across the exterior and executes one of the red sectoids with ease. The other has fallen back behind the outsider, and the two combine a psionic attack and suppressing fire to prevent Hamilton from throwing his chem grenade. Redmond lines up his shot to free Hamilton, but it's doubtful he can properly throw his grenade while the effects of the mindfray persist.

The remaining red sectoid and mech pilot are both poisoned, and fail spectacularly to do harm to any operatives. Boyd notices a trail of psionic energy linked to the pilot's brain, and charges after the other end. Receiving the location, Redmond spots his target. This mission is in the bag.

He almost fails to kill it, but double taps as he notices the outsider get up and move to flank him.

So what are your X-COM accomplishments /xcg/? What are you still working on?
I have finished:
x-com: enemy unkown ironman normal
XCOM EW ironman classic
X2 ironman commander
x-com FMP inronman normal
PirateZ ironman normal
I have an x-com superhuman campaign on hold and am currently trying to get through a normal Long War campaign.
After that I plan to finish an X2 Legenedary Ironman and then move back to X1 EW Ironman Impossible. If I ever make through all that I'll finish an Apocalypse ironman and maybe even force myself to play TFTD.

i think the X2 terror missions are a vast improvement over X1/LW but in both cases unless you get the perfect start you're going to incur civilian casualties no matter what. obviously this has larger repercussions in X1/LW which makes them even more of a pain. i'll go as far to say i even like the X2 missions simply because there's an actual win condition you can achieve.

Original chryssalid always kills the target if they hit. Without fail every-time. Unless it's mechanical. Then it takes like 3 to 6 hits which is only like half its TUs. They also had very good effective health, being able to survive multiple laser rifle shots. Not really a contest.

Made one of these armors. Appreciable subtlety. The psi-sense makes clearing buildings, mansions, and bases a breeze, plus I don't need to worry about ethereals or catgirls sneaking up on me. Unfortunately, it can't wield any weapons besides its innate magical powers.

So the plan is that this rookie with the shotgun peeks out from that corner every turn to provide sight on anything that comes down the passage. While the two at the back fire rockets down the line. There's another team set up down the other way too. The rookie on the stairs meanwhile is being a packmule to provide new more rockets to the fire team.

I really hope this isn't a psi race though because oh boy am I fucked with 4 rookies with rockets.

Honestly this is what makes the score system (and strategic/tactical game) for og x-com great. Operations are rated purely on what happens with a point system that is no bs. Show up to a crashed landing, shoot some ayys and then leave? That's a positive score, good mission. Go to a terror mission and lose 90% of the civies? Too bad ayys, you only took two casualties and absolutely kicked all 40 of their collective asses so good job commander. Go on a base raid and capture all the aliens while losing 10 men? Excellent work commander, your a step closer to defeating the alien invasion.
You even get positive score for completing research.
As long as your killing ayys and stealing their stuff then you are winning the war.

They come thick and fast on superhuman FMP. I've had to face 3 so far and I've just hit Jan 2000 while still being at laser/gauss tier. Plasma/railguns are a long way off and psi is even further so I'm expecting plenty more although they'll be getting easier now my tech has improved.

Anarchy's Children is very hit or miss and a lot of people really didn't like it, i would recommend search around for pics and see for yourself how you like it before buying

Alien Hunters its a difficulty dlc, i personally like it but i have a few issues with it like how after you kill all 3 of them there is nothing else and with the extra hunter weapons and armor it might make the end game more easier, the actual encounter with the rulers you either kick their ass or you get fucked by them there is not much middle ground but at the same time you could same the same of a lot of missions in vanilla X2.
if you think vanilla X2 its too easy and want something else to spice up your campaign i would say to give it a try

Shens Last Gift is in my opinion weaker than AH, it only adds robot soldiers and a very great and magnificent story mission, the sparks feel very under powered however and i dont feel like they live up to their potential, thank fully there are already mods that buffs them and adds more upgrades to them. if you have some extra money and want to do the story mission yourself give it a go, if not wait for a sale

I want to answer your questions, but honestly I haven't been able to play X2 much recently, and I know there are people here who could answer your question much better, but I don't know where they are. So I guess I'll give it a shot.

Anarchy's children is just a cosmetic pack. Some people don't like it. Some people like someone of the stuff in it. It's certainly nothing fantastic imo, but I really like alot of the helmets/face props it has.
Alien rulers DLC adds Magnificent Boss units to mess you up. They are purposefully designed bs, but beatable. I would say they are good for spicing you campaigns up if you want something new and provide a different challenge to overcome. However, the items added unbalance X2 more in your favor whenever you aren't fighting the rulers.

Shen's Last Gift has a very good mission. It is only one mission, but it is quite long with multiple stages, new mechanics, new enemies, and the voiced enemy AI is definitely fun. Sparks have potential, but right now they are simply too weak for Legendary campaigns and modded campaigns. Defintely need buffs. There are already some good mods too buff them.

Long War ayys are pretty good. The LW perk pack is fun, though you definitely need to craft a campaign that will challenge your really strong soldiers.

Also the modding workshop has tons of stuff now you are going to want to look into. The OP has an up to date steam collection of mods that have been tested/used by /xcg/ and are considered good. Check those out.

I personally adore the T3 weapons, but I have a hardon for swooshy-looking energy weapons. The only thing I don't like is the energy build-up before they're fired, makes it look like there'd be crazy bad trigger delay.

Now, the T3 armor is another story entirely. Skintight pajama armors have never been my thing. The design would have been perfectly palatable, however, if they'd just put tactical vests or rigging or something over the actual armor.

Airgame should have been a turn based in miniature sort of affair. You get your section of jets (2-4), they make contact with the enemy (no cover/fog of war business), then it's either standard your turn for all units then their turn or your unit their unit your unit their unit.

Obviously more limited action choices but stuff like:

-Evasive manuevers (Cover mode)
-AA missile (higher hit chance but yellow move
-autocannon (blue move so you could auto-cannon twice or autocannon and evasive, but cannot autocannon and AA)
-Then the existing perks we had in Xcom1 like guaranteed hit (probably be pilot A doing a laser-designator for his turn, the next pilot to fire getting a guaranteed hit), some sort of electronic jammer that could either decrease their chance to hit you or decrease their chance to be able to escape (how many turns until they evade you)
-Type of jet might dictate how many aircraft you can bring. Initial fighter-jet is 4, advanced ayy-tech jet is 2. Ayys similarly might start off fielding only 1 UFO but mid to late game you could face 2-3 alien fighters or just 1 big momma jamma vs your ayy fighter.

I kinda like the armor, but I definitely would prefer it wit rigging and stuff. It's part of why I've been using a mod that re-adds Titan armor EU to the game. There's a few options with extra padding, rigging, etc.

Also agreed on the delay. It's kinda cool at first until you realize ow horrible it'd be to aim something with that sort of delay and I also miss firing bursts - nothing in plasma is automatic except for the cannon.

This, desu. I wanted ADVENT to be akin to EXALT - humans who were opposing you. EXALT wasn't working with the aliens (despite LW's retcon making everyone forget that they opposed the aliens) but they were definitely in conflict with XCOM and it was fun getting that bit of moral ambiguity and seeing the battlefield stained with red blood that wasn't my troop's blood for once.

It'd also have been nice if te upgrades to ADVENT has more visual cues - the MEC gets painted red and that's cool but that's it. The better lancers, officers, troopers, all look the fucking same. When EXALT upgraded they got new guns and replaced their vest with a vest made of alloys.

Maybe in XCOM3 or something we'll get to shoot at other humans again.

It's actually not quite that big of a retcon. The LW canon is that EXALT is working for themselves, but as XCOM continue to kick their ass they start to get more and more desperate. They eventually team up with the aliens to try and simply survive. Once the EXALT HQ goes down, the remaining EXALT are just puppets under alien control wither their leadership dead and organization in shambles. Obviously still a retcon, but a bit more nuanced.

I think timers should be akin to a count down to a massive ramp-up in alien forces, perhaps coinciding with Firebrand having to briefly leave to avoid alien aircraft or something. It's boring to run out of time and just have the curtain fall, but it could be really interesting/fun if you had to fight off this massive troop surge as you fight your way to the skyranger.

Relatedly, what I'd want in an expansion is a better strategic layer akin to EU's, or more so akin to LW's version where you had to take and maintain regions instead of fighting a nebulous timer. I'd also like to see some airgame again, but I don't exactly have any faith in Firaxis doing a fun airgame. Not yet. The only "XCOM" with a good airgame wasn't even an XCOM title. I just wish I liked more of Xenonauts than it's 10/10 airgame.

I will always stand by my statement that air-game in x-com is great. Just enough depth for that player agency and to let the player learn tips and tricks to maximize their play, but simple enough not to be hugely demanding and overstep it's role as part of the strategic game.

I said I wanted a better airgame than X1's in X2. I still do, though honestly I would probably be happier with a similar system to X1 put back in. But I'm not holding my breath on either.

Blame JLump. If you had subscibed to the Muton Centurion pack in the past, surprise! They expanded it to a whole bunch of new aliens. Without making -that- a new mod they instead used the Centurion entry for that and then made a seperate mod entry for just the Centurion so that most people would just have all these new aliens show up unannounced.

I only realized it was a mod myself when I saw ADVENT troopers running up with the ADVENT-ized grenade launchers from the ADVENT weapons mods. I knew then it was a fucking mod because Firaxis wouldn't just appropriate a recolor of an XCOM weapon.

To this day I still think this is an oversight on Firaxis's part. It would have been cool to see the armor design get progressively more alien as ADVENT upgraded. Imagine ADVENT Elite units wearing scaled-down Muton power armor.

I'm still upset that EXALT didn't return in proper form in X2. Seeing how it's mentioned in EW that they've been around for centuries, I find it hard to believe that they just "poofed".

Get a mod like the LW perk pack/LW Toolbox. Then get a mod like the SpecOps Knife mod. Then enjoy stabbing people to death without breaking concealment though the pod will go active and take cover.

I haven't tried to yet with a proper sword that won't let you stealth-kill people more than the first time you break concealment, but Shinobis have a tree dedicated to being a melee monster and fleche (a new version of slash that LW introduces) gives a damage boost of a point per three tiles traveled, making charging across the map horrendously damaging. Makes mobility PCSes and SMGs very attractive weapons.

Well, ADVENT is technically still a 'peacekeeping' force. They still need to look presentable and broadly human to be accepted by the civilian populations they're watching over, so I'm not sure there's much room for radical aesthetic changes. The increased number of aliens you see in the latter stages of the game does a better job of showing the Elders taking you seriously, then becoming desperate as the Avatar project is threatened. They have to play their hand more openly to keep control.

Some more references to EXALT definitely would have been cool, though. I like to think that they still exist, but with the aliens in control of the world, they just function as one more disparate resistance group to be contacted. It'd be nice if Firaxis gave us a nod towards that - that you're banding together a bunch of different rebel bands, all of which are going to have different ideologies and motivations for getting rid of the aliens, and they might not automatically play nice with each other. It could make for some fun complications on the geoscape.

I don't really remember everything. First thing you need to go to Nexus and download the enable console mod. Then you are going to have to lookup the command. Like eperk or something. There are numbers that correspond to the perks. The perks numbers are different between vanilla and long war. Long war has most of the perks laballed in a text file that is called like "armor kits" or something. Adding a negative " - " in front of the perk number should remove the perk. Any stats normally associated with that perk will not be added. Good luck anon.

I have myself in my regular name pool, but it's just my online handle. I don't treat him any differently then anyone else on my team though. In x-com I died leading from the front because I had good reactions and time units. I died in Legendary X2 as well twice. Once as a sniper and once as a specialist. No surprise there though, those campaigns tanked. In my current Long War campaign I'm just the 3rd string engineer in my roster.

Sort of. My character pool is built out of characters my friends and I play in other games, so there's a few instances of "me" running around in game, but since they're just my character it's a lot easier to distance myself from it when they fuck up easy shit like a near point blank shotgun flank.

Pic related, died in an op where I learned that even if you get to the objective and steal the data while concealed you still get revealed. Which resulted in him, another Grenadier and my specialist being isolated because I'd left two snipers back on a building to provide covering fire along with an assault to bounce between the two but reinforcements and shitty RNG ensured both got isolated and my Grenadier here took a faceful of plasma because he couldn't hit an ADVENT who was less than five feet in front of him with a fucking cannon.

Thankfully he's been doing better in my latest campaign where he's a Long War perk pack style Grenadier and he can just hold onto an SMG for mobility bonuses and explode literally everything forever.

The Berserker Queen can be kited around if you have a good overwatch ambush and the Archon King can be stunlocked in a variety of ways

The Viper King, meanwhile, flash freezes your entire firing line, yanks your sniper from across the map and fucks him in the ass while the rest of the team is forced to watch.

Use Hack plus
Bring a specialist and just haywire the fuck out of them every time you meet one. With Hack Plus you snowball the tech game so hard that robotic enemies become more of a liability than anything else, so you may want to tone down the bonus to hacking that a successful hack gains. IIRC it was just as broken in XCOM's favor in the base game if you had a good hacker or got good rewards out of a listening post, X2 is just snowball heavy no matter how you twist it.

Unfortunately even stunning them doesn't remove their innate defense, enjoy having rookies miss shots on a drone literally sitting on the ground.

With your actions influencing galactic battles ie adding bonuses for your allied fleets against the enemy. Not enough to directly influence the war in your side's successes but some to give them some bonuses.

This SPARKs are shit meme needs to end. They handle like post nerf MECs in LW. They fail at their intended purpose of being beef mclargehuge tanks which unfortunately makes their perk tree kind of one dimensional, but they're an early and free heavy weapons platform. You treat your spark like an IFV, not a tank. It's not for soaking shots it's a force multiplier that needs proper screening and support from your infantry. Is that good design thematically? Fuck no, Firaxis shipped them awfully, but SPARKs definitely have a role in the squad. Especially if you're playing with the LW Alien pack where having another source of armor shred is vital to your survival.

And if you still can't be bothered with them, there's at least a couple of mods that significantly buff SPARKs, either outright or through a series of proving grounds projects.

But the problem is that the SPARKs, like the MECs of old, can't take cover and so are much more susceptible to enemy fire. If the SPARK can fire on the enemy, the eney can fire on the SPARK, and a unit that has less evasion must have more durability.

I found the MECs in vanilla EW to be sort of underwhelming as well. It wasn't until LW that they became mandatory for me.

That's where all that screening and support comes in. The SPARK needs to either manage LOS really well or relies on having the smoke/suppression advantage of the infantry around it. Your big heavy gun platform has a big fucking target painted on it, and undoubtedly, the risk to reward balance is not there in every situation. Like I said, it's a lot like the management of IFVs and fire support vehicles in something like Wargame. Having that big gun in the fight is important, but you can't forget that the lowliest infantry squad will fuck the living daylights out of it when you don't take care of it. Now, without any significant aim benefits and the lack of shooting abilities of its own, like chain shot or demolition or the things that made LW MECs actually super valuable, the MEC is basically a free EXO until you get more goodies for it. Speaking of which, yeah EXO and other heavy suits largely invalidate the SPARK's purpose, though at a greater cost than your first SPARK. I think the intent was that the Bit would give it a bit more technical utility, but as it stands I actually rather like their niche as a shredder gun/rocket platform that has run and gun via overdrive.

I'm starting to see bigger issues with the SPARK just in discussing it thoough, and I think the source of the disillusionment most people have with it is that as a class, it's completely unnecessary. It's a middle of the road option that is beat in all extremes by more specialized builds that are already in the game. Enemy Within at least introduced new enemy types to somewhat reward the player for bringing a new toy of their own... But the SPARK just falls into X2 without any real rhyme or reason.

You get a project called Mechanized Warfare when you build the proving grounds, it's like 10 days and gives you a free SPARK at the end.

With the Ayy Hunters mission turned off they're available as items for a low supply cost at the beginning of the game. Mission 1 frost bomb.

The problem is you only really feel the attrition if you go in too early. If you just wait till mag it's still the same DPS check wipe or get wiped on encounter stuff that vanilla X2 is all about.

I see where you're coming from, and certainly it must be tricky as hell to balance the SPARK so that it's a good addition to the squad while not being so extremely good that you'll just field 6 of the things and call it a day.

However, I still believe that as it stands, they simply demand too much special treatment for me to choose one over an ordinary soldier.

Honestly, I think I'd prefer it if the SPARKs were tanky as fuck but cost a king's ransom to manufacture so the one or two units you could feasibly have would be significant investments and being stupid with them meant they'd be spending most of their time in the repair bay, at best.

Yes, I know. Tier 1 weapons just need to have their models ripped from other games, plenty to go around what with CoD and Battlefield, etc. I guess the main problem is that while real life weapons are plentiful and can all be ported into XCOM with no need for "headcanon" or whatever, gun models that could work tiers 2 and 3 are too SPECIFIC. Halo weapons, Mass Effect Weapons and whatever else are all very distinctly FROM somewhere, so they don't mesh with XCOM as well.

Nope. Supposed to be part of the simulation feel. The only way to view enemy health in game is with a mind probe (or simillar device, FMP has a billion items) or through mind control.
As for weapon stats you are just gonna have to wait till you can research them. Most times though it doesn't matter too much. Ballistics and you have a good chance to survive, especially with any decent armor. Blue laser and you'll probably die but it's certainly not guaranteed. Any plasma and you have to get a very lucky damage roll not to go down. Even power armor only give you like a 50/50.

FMP is pretty bloated and I never found a comprehensive resource for it last time I played it.

The UFOpedia on your geoscape bar will have information for weapons and items that you've researched.

For information on enemy stats the autopsies will usually point out any unusual abilities, resistances, or weaknesses. For detailed enemy stats, you'll need to get some more advanced research to use a mind probe on an enemy in the battlescape to scan their stats.

If I had to take a guess, it's probably because their strengths lie in writing and comedy. So they make webcomics where that's there strength and the drawing isn't their primary talent, or it's not their focus so they put even more effort into the writing. Also simple and or poorly drawn art can have a certain charm to it, and if it's funny I think it only amplifies it.

For me it's impossible to tell; I just don't think I can make objective opinion. Not only did I play X1 first (rose-tinted glasses), but I also played x-com first, so now there's potential for a double layer of rose-tinted glasses (due to shared setting and aliens). And then I really only play X2 with mods, so making a vanilla to vanilla comparison only gets dicier. And I have more play-time in Long War then vanilla, so it's hard to separate how much I enjoyed the game without Long War influencing me.

Basically I just settle at they are both good games and leave it at that. That said, I don't think vanilla in either game were bland.
