Emulation news:
Saturn emulation better than ever due to mednafen-saturn.
Dreamcast emulation better than ever following demul's recent yearly update.
N64 emulation better than ever with new advances due to vulkan API.

Is it faster? I can't play Shenmue because of the slowdown on my PC. My PC *IS* a bit of a turd but it can run PCSX2 and Dolphin WAY faster.

You should use a newer dev version, 1.4.0 is old as grandpa.
Try changing the GSdx to one of the SSE ones.
Have you definitely selected a bios? Just having them in the folder isn't necessarily enough.

What do you use as a measure of accuracy for a system or "intended experience"?
Many SNES games were made with pixel perfect art in mind but the system itself does not have pixel perfect display. In that case the system itself does not display its games how they were actually intended to be displayed. Same thing applies for PS1 and its z buffer issues.
>>
>>154638540
Accuracy is how closely an emulator's internal model conforms to the range of permissible behaviors established by actual hardware.

Intended experience is some bullshit you made up in your mind.
>>
>>154639404
>Accuracy is how closely an emulator's internal model conforms to the range of permissible behaviors established by actual hardware.

But the NES cannot output RGB without hardware mods. Having a crisp image is inaccurate emulation behavior then unless your emulator is just displaying VRAM and in that case the 4:3 output aspect ratio is incorrect.
>>
>>154639850
The display isn't part of the original hardware.
>>
>>154640281
Cable ports are part of the original hardware. The fact it has no RGB ports means that it could not output a clear image without hardware mods, making the blur an important part of video feed display.
>>
>>154640592
> ports output an image
But they don't. They output electrical impulses. There's no feedback to the machine state either, so what happens to the output is irrelevant to accuracy. You could use the NES to operate an industrial automation system or a guided missile.
>>
>>154641374
>so what happens to the output is irrelevant to accuracy
Except its how accuracy is measured in most emulators. Cycle accurate emulation is practically non existent.
Thats besides the point. Most emulators emulate the console and how it would output the image on a screen rather than show you the VRAM. The distinction is necessary because in VRAM the aspect ratio is different from how it is rendered on the display. The image in the VRAM is pixel perfect while the screen usually stretches the game to fit 4:3 aspect ratio. So the output image is not really an accurate representation of what is being rendered by the console.
Now since most emulators don't really make the distinction between outputting the processed signal or outputting the VRAM on the emulator display, I have to assume they output the VRAM in which case a 4:3 image is actually inaccurate for systems like NES and SNES and Genesis for NTSC games.

In the case they output the VRAM after has been processed as signals available to the original hardware, a crisp image in case of a NES is inaccurate because the system physically cannot produce RGB signal without hardware mods, making the imperfections of NTSC the real accurate thing.

>>
>>154642524
>>how a console displays its images is not part of the console
>wut
It depends on the console. Like, the Game Boy Advance has a defined display. Display behaviors on the GBA are part of the original hardware and pertinent to discussions about accuracy.

Most 4th gen and previous home consoles fall into this sort of weird logical space that most people can't properly wrap their minds around.
>>
>>154642706
A NES has a defined display too. It can output at composite or NTSC signals. Since the user has no way to actually see the VRAM, those two are the only relevant display methods.
Have you actually touched a real console in your life?
>>
>>154642524

>>
>>154642925
Because Legend of the Mystical Ninja is a SNES game?

>>154643080
Are you genuinely retarded?
>>
>>154643080
The fact that NES can only output those two signals means that it can only output images which have aberration from those signals. NES may not have its own screen but it still has a limited ability to output the image. It doesn't matter what TV you use.
>>
>>154643152
My bad, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, though I think the VC runs both?

> Are you genuinely retarded?
I dunno, like, is it not normal to be able to tell the difference between a TV and invisible electrical impulses?
>>
>>154643306
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon has never been released on virtual console unless you mean injecting it on the VC in which case, enjoy all your nosaving and graphical glitches.
>>
>>154643292
Electrical signals aren't images any more than random bits on your hard drive are images. Unless they actually fall into the visible EM spectrum anyway.

Now, if you were talking about how the output section of a NES emulator conforms to phosphor behaviors from X, Y, or Z television, that might be something else. It still has nothing to do with emulating NES hardware proper though.
>>
>>154643590

Even if you want to be obtuse and compare the the spectrum of the results the transmission methods a NTSC signal is still different from a composite or RGB signal. They add different levels of noise or use a different decoding method which results in different wave forms if you were to convert it back to the an electrical signal instead of the one transmitted by the NES because of different levels of noise and methods of modulation.
The post you quoted even makes the distinction between the signal and the output on a TV. The fact that you somehow brought up oscilloscopes and spectrograms in an emulation thread quoting a post specifically talking about TVs makes me think you don't know a single thing about what you are talking about.

I've been emulation FF7 with mednafen. It's working fine so far, but I see a few issues coming up. When I get to disc 2, will it be as easy as opening the second .cue file with mednafen? It seems unlikely that it would be so easy. Since it's such a common game I'm sure I'll be able to continue to disc 2 somehow though. Will I have to somehow merge the saves or will it be as easy as mounting a different image?

Also, I need to be able to hold L1,L2,R1, and R2 down at the same time, but my shitty laptop only accepts a few keypresses at a time. Would binding all of those buttons to one key work?
>>
>>154656145
>Would binding all of those buttons to one key work

>>
>>154656145
you should get the eboot and start over with epsxe. mednafen isn't a very friendly emulator and is known to stop working for mysterious reasons.
>>
>>154656145
You can actually make a .txt file, and inside of it, do the following:

Final Fantasy VII (USA) (Disc 1).cue
Final Fantasy VII (USA) (Disc 2).cue
Final Fantasy VII (USA) (Disc 3).cue

Then save it as a .m3u file. Drag that onto the .exe instead, and it'll allow you to freely swap between discs inside the emulator. But yes, dragging disc 2's .cue onto the .exe is enough

>Would binding all of those buttons to one key work?
Yeah, that'll work, but I don't remember a forced run sequence in FF7?? I could be wrong though.

CPU isn't up to snuff. Shaders and most other bells and whistles are GPU related - turning all those off could get a hunk of junk working as a graphics processor to display, but there's nothing you can do to alleviate a CPU being too weak for something running through retroarch.

I made my own tests. some games have very particular quirks when played on an emulator vs real hardware. The most (in)famous example is Action 52.

IMO, if you really want to check if an emulator is accurate, you need to test the worst games, not the best. Any shitty N64 emulator can play Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time, but which of these can properly emulate the green fog present on Superman 64?

Not that all other emulators are bad, mind you, but I'm quite fond of puNES

I didn't know about this. Googled "dualshock 4 autoconfig retroarch", pasted the github one into autoconfig > xinput, now it says "Wireless Controller configured in port #0", but it doesn't recognize any input for configuration, nor works in-game.

You guys are gonna kill me but I had the idea to restart the computer because I had just installed the bluetooth driver, and now it works!!! Sorry, it just didn't occur to me since it was being paired and all!!!

I haven't actively used a controller in so many years... last one was the first DualShock back with the PSOne. Been playing with keyboard all my life, and sort of banned myself years ago from any console that "demands" a controller (basically anything 32 bits and above) because I didn't have one (not to mention wireless keyboard from the couch is so awkward), so this is oddly plays like quite a novelty for someone so "experienced" in games (I just played for 20 minutes with the DS4 and it was... weird). Will take practice for sure, but anyhow a million THANKS!!!!! Only thing missing now is to spend a lifetime configuring Kodi as a frontend

If you have a very specific adapter then yes (the Play.comone and no you can't finds one new nowadays), someone made something for those otherwise you're SOL.

Technically any pad that has at-least an axis since you can map axis to analog button but that requires heavy reworking of some games control layout

Is it even technically legal to have people play videogames in public places with no explicit license? That would be similar to opening an arcade using non-arcade copies of a game. I know you can't do that with DVDs even if you own them, I don't know if it's different for games.

Not that anybody would give a shit anyway, if they don't use the real console they might as well just use a rpi anyway.

>>154758594
mednafen is the most retard friendly PSX emulator because you put the BIOS (linked on the wiki) into the BIOS folder and drag the .cue of your game over the .exe

There are no options because it needs no options. It's the most accurate PSX emulator, and it's the only one worth using if you're playing a 2D game.

PGXP is a fork of PCSX-R that adds a bunch of great shit like texture correction and high resolution rendering. If you really want to play 240p, early 3D titles in HD, it's the best emulator for the job.

They're literally the only two PSX emulators worth using right now. I don't know how you landed on vanilla PCSX-R or ePSXe since neither is recommended in the wiki

Because Play! hasn't implemented more than 10 games working yet. It's a distraction: a one man project intended for slow learning for his own interest. It isn't meant to compete with PCSX2 and people need to stop acting like it is. The dev will be 80 years old before it even gets to PCSX2 level.

Wut. You only want two monitors: a modern LCD for general use, and a late 90s to early 00's CRT monitor for low resolution emulation or old games.

This dual monitor setup does not require much space with a 17-19 inch CRT monitor. Only if you go overboard and get something like a FW900 would space be a concern.

Not on master, use the chinese builds. Also you need a really good CPU. Audio isn't the best, but manageable. The opening FMV runs slow. If you go into the special menu, streetpass menu, or talk to the save NPC from chapter 1 onward, the game will softlock.

DS4windows no longer works as intended on Windows 10 anniversary edition.

You have to install this program (created by the inputmapper guy) in order to allow DS4windows to work properly:
https://inputmapper.com/downloads/download/5-tools/63-duleshock-4-exclusive-mode-tool

I'm not sure if that functionality has been integrated into inputmapper yet. If it has, I guess that should be the recommended xinput wrapper until DS4windows gets updated.

By the way, if the above hasn't been added to the wiki, someone should add it. I'm too lazy to. And I don't give a fuck about the wiki.

They actually are though. They force developers to think out of the box to make up for them.

Why do you think most old games have vastly superior OSTs in general, for example?

>They force developers to think out of the box to make up for them
Just like the 4:3 aspect ratio forced the developers to adjust their games instead of just lettting their 8:7 assets stretch and how PAL forced the developers to adjust to 50hz instead of just dropping 10 frames and calling it a day right?

>>
>>154808135
Your eyes have a large blind spot where the optical nerve is, but you don't notice because your brain fills in the missing information. Scanlines work pretty much the same way for low resolution graphics, as long as you are viewing at a reasonable distance.
>>
>>154808656
>as long as you are viewing at a reasonable distance
Just run the game at the native resolution then. No need to do the whole "reasonable distance" dance.
>>
>>154631356
make sure you use the cheat code to run 60fps it's fucking great.
>>
>>154808656
The equivalent of human eye blind spot is TV interpolation not scanlines. If you really want a dark and blurry picture then just turn on bilinear filtering and turn down the brightness.

How do I get vibration to work in retroarch mednafen? I'm using a DS3 with SCP and had vibration working fine in pcxs. Online sources suggest it's possible but none of the suggestions are working for me.

Ok, I have to ask because this is some nonsense.

On windows, using a 280x (so it's not great with opengl), using retroarch on windowed mode for some cores like bsnes-mercury-balanced or mednafen on windowed mode, shit either stutters or drop frames at times.

Tried hackintosh for shits and giggles, using retroarch here on windowed mode and it ain't dropping a thing. It's fine even with some shaders here and there.

Any ideas why this would happen?

That sounds great.
I hate to be a nag, but I reported a bug with digimon world in SW a while back about sprites being misaligned and I was wondering if this was a known issue and just something to do with the way I had everything set up. Doesn't occur in standalone mednafen.

I tend not to pay attention to the issues not related to the GL code but I'll have a look later.

I think beetle's GPU code is lagging behind the standalone version unless there's been an update lately, could be a missing fix.

X360 doesn't really natively emulate Xbox titles and therefore I assume there must be some problems encountered occasionally. HW, but the problem is present in both
>>
>>154851165
Then you probably have a fucked up rom. Did you try downloading from more than one source?

your specs?

emuparadise but someone on /v/ recommend the no intro rom so I'll try that
>>
>>154851268
thats strange
Does it even occur in something like epsxe or pcsxr?

ok byuu

>>154851419
It's been a while since I used PCSXR but I don't remember it happening there. Also the problem goes away if I run it at native resolution, but then I have to deal with shittier looking character models in-game.
>>
>>154851550
It probably has to do with the way the emulator scales it on higher resolutions.
Try it on PCSXR and if it happens even on that then it is more likely to be your system resolution than anything else.
>>
>>154851710
My system res is 1080p, so it's not an odd resolution or anything. I suspect it's an upscaling issue too but I can't come across anyone else having the problem, which is weird. Installing PCSXR and will report on that.

back when I first learned of Retroarch I got the list of emulators in it and noticed that basically the only emulators it had were either ones I had not heard of or were ones that were mostly complete, without much in the way of bugs or graphical glitches; for example, the aforementioned BSNES and Mednafen's PSX core which -- while it looks awful due to SD -- no one could accuse of being buggy in the emulation. I noticed inaccurate, messy emulators like PCSX2, ePSXe, ZSNES, Project 64, etc. were not in RA, and I assumed this was one of the reasons.

And I thought, perhaps naively, that the creator of RA had some kind of strange standards for how accurate an emulator had to be in order to be "allowed" into RA, like it was an exclusive front end made only for emulators that had achieved some level of refinement, even if that meant he would not include emulators for newer consoles yet or ever.

However, my illusions were eventually crushed when he started adding stuff like Mupen64 Plus, PPSSPP, etc., emulators which have serious accuracy flaws on at least some high profile games and many more on unknown or shovelware games.

tried a different dkc2 rom and it still crashes

This is strange cause it never used to do this. Computer is probably fucked

is there a ds lite overlay

Can anyone confirm this?

But

But PPSSPP is good
>>
>>154852181
Not that I know of. I think there isn't.
>>
>>154852329
PPSSPP is good for what it is. It still has many major issues and has yet to surpass the original hardware.
>>
>>154852272
I built this pc in 2011 so the specs are shit.
gpu is a 6870 and cpu is i5

My dad works for playstation, so I can confirm it's true

For your standards. But it isn't on the level where it can be called highly accurate

IIRC that's related to interlacing, CT menus are interlaced. Are you sure you get the issue with the HW renderer?

try the bsnes mercury libretro core

I can't run it using opengl as the renderer in the core options for Mednafen PSX HW, if that's what you're asking.

Why can't you?

Slowdown
>>
>>154854616

Ah, well the good news is that I should commit the optimized code ~soon.

But IIRC the glitch in software has been introduced when we took apart the interlacing mode to implement increased internal resolution, interlacing and increased IR don't play well together.

It can do this:

Shit journalism.

Metal Gear? Is it THAT location?
>>
>>154854745
Cool, I'll look forward to that! I guess PCSXR will suffice in the meantime.
