Well Lucis' theme is death. Insomnia literally praises death. And the skulls shown everywhere look like doomtrain's face.

Also the focus on trains really makes me hope the ring summons doomtrain as the later focus in the game is travel via train. They also said you can walk in trains while they travel like RDR.

Negate? Not uncommon. All flying monsters automatically negate earth damage.

Faris and Bartz are capped and I have faris's sea lord sb and bartz's bsb and ssb
Gil and exdeath are 65 with no sbs
Lenna is almost 60 with no sbs, can egg her higher and give a shared medica
Krile is 70ish with sheep song and wind drake's roar

I feel like not having a good medica for lenna will be a limiting factor since shareds just heal like 1kish to the party

Was worried a couple times but I had Tyro uses his abilities every turn and Bartz hit hit often enough that I always had Wall up.

Best advice I can give No-Wall people is have your RW be a Wall and pray that you have a Medica user and maybe a Haste user. Go with Tyro selection and get one if need be as he hits hard and often. Especially the first few turns where he could do back to back Monk Kicks. Biggest key to the fight is Elemental resistances, equip those Element Resistant Accessories with the strongest you can as he goes through the whole array of Spellblades except for Water Strike (Meaning that II Acc. gets great use here). Element Resisting means more to survive than buffing your attack. For me he used Fire Strike a lot so I was happy to see the Nightmare Fire Resist Acc get use. Drawtaliate doesn't work most of the time as he does Multi-Spellblades and AOE Physicals. Dispeling his haste he gets is huge so if you do normally Drawtaliate, replace Draw Fire with Banishing Strike. Regen helps but is not essential, Curaja at R5 is, Protectga either with the spell or a LB is a big deal. He is possible to beat without a Shout or Hand of the Emperor LB/RW, but it'll be harder.

Galuf Boostga (35%) was my only unique SB for the realm and the shared Regen staff from Tactics was also crucial on Ex, who spentmore than half of the battle Haste-ing the team.
Had a shared mini medica on both Faris (~750 HP) and Lenna (~1200 HP).

XI tried to emulate a lot of things that Everquest did back in the day. Novel at the time and was quite difficult and popular. Nowadays it's a bit harder to play due to games getting better and thus XI's arcaic system feels annoying to play. On the flip side though they've made a lot of changes to try and make it easier to play, thus while taking down the difficulty made it more accessible and "funner". XI's main story can now be beaten under 40 hours. Major Expansions are about the same amount each.

XIV tried to emulate what made WoW popular while painting on a coat of Final Fantasy. Combat is slower than the industry MMO standard at first but you get faster as you level. The non-combative content actually is pretty fun and robust with complex strategies and planning.

Both have free login campaigns frequently per year so you never have to sub if you don't want. Just have to play when it's available for a free login.

Reason why they have 3 MMOs at once (XI, XIV, & Dragon Quest X) is that each bring in income specifically to get funding for their Non-MMO projects. That's the big problem with the MMOs, new content made is the bare minimum as they don't get as much funding as other projects. All 3 MMOs specifically recently have funded XV into being a thing.

VIII was my first mainline FF. Played it almost blind and loved it.

Did a few more playthroughs over the years but never really bothered with Triple Triad and junctioning.

Last year though, I bought it from the summer sale and started playing cards from the get go. Lionheart and optimal magic junctioned on disc 1 while my party remained below lvl 15.

You won't. Noel and Serah are only really good at Com/Rav (though I did invest a bit in Med/Sab for Serah and Sen for Noel) so you won't really have to worry about how to level them. That just leaves you with getting one monster for each role you want to use to plow through the story. The main story's difficulty is really undertuned so your party setup really isn't that important for that.

One thing you should take note of if you want to optimize your characters though is that every few levels there's a visibly bigger node in the crystarium. Depending on what role you level on that node you'll get a stat bonus corresponding to that role so if you want to skew your characters towards a specific stat (you do), then make sure to level the right role on those nodes.

the cloak is good on its own, fuckface. With the +20% boost, the SB already does perfectly respectable damage and with the enwind effect, the second cast will deal damage comparable to a SSB. You've fallen for the meme of anything that isn't a top tier relic being trash, when in reality, the best SBs just make an easy game even easier. I played for 6 months after Ultimates were released with relics you'd consider trash (and spent a huge amount of mythril chasing SSBs with little to show for it and several streaks of 4-5 0/11 pulls) and no hastega or wall, and I can still count the fights I struggled with on one hand. People clear Ultimate Cid's Missions with no unique SBs so there's no reason not being loaded with SSBs and BSBs should prevent your main party from doing so too.

The point of a breaker is the damage his basic attacks do to the enemy's red bar. He needs to go last, letting everyone else build red bar before he can lower it. The only time a breaker should go first should be if he knows he can break the boss, in which case he should stamp I'll Break! I'll go first!, because it would give the rest of us more turns during break phase to attack
Other then that instance, healer should ALWAYS go first, because they need to clear out their orbs so everyone's attacks will build new orbs for them, because life orbs are rarer than others.
And you should always drive orbs you don't need to make room for orbs you want, unless you have PuPu with the ability to make it not use a turn which is much better than driving.

There are a few reasons why he suggested it.

PowBD reduces atk less than MagBD reduces mag (-40% vs -50%).

The RK damage formula changes after a certain number of atk points such that every point of atk is weighed less in the final dmg calculation. The same is true for mag, but the number of mag points to change the formula is much higher - meaning reducing mag will have a larger effect on final dmg than reducing atk all else being equal.

magic multipliers are higher than physical attack multipliers generally. meaning they are usually more dangerous.

most bosses with mixed attacks have aoe magic and single target physical.

if an enemy has both aoe phys and mag, you will still want full break+magbd for the reasons listed above.

You'll be playing solo for the majority of the time except in instanced dungeons with either a pre-made party or random people. Awesome. Glad you might give it a shot. Best advice I can give is take your time, make note to your party members in a "duty finder dungeon" if you're new to it, and be vocal if you need help in game as people will help.

If you do decide to get the game in full, note that there's essentially an entire new story after you beat the initial story with what are called on the net as "The 2.X Story". It's a set of storyline quests that were added in a set of patches from patch 2.1 til 2.55 (hence "2.X"). It's about as long as the normal ARR storyline altogether. If you get Heavensward with it either by the separate expansion or in a bundle you'll get experience from these 2.X Quests that you normally wouldn't get.

Like others have said, XIV is basically a single player game so you can solo it. You do need to do group content to progress but you sign up to a Duty Finder and it matches you with randoms. These randoms could be on other servers as well so most people treat each other as smart AI NPCs and only really say greetings and farewells.

ARR story is maybe a 7/10. It has some really amazing parts to it that are worth 9/10 I would say, but a lot of the story is padded out because of the whole MMO leveling. So inbetween the amazing parts you will get generic MMO quests that give small bits of lore to you.

Heavensward story on the other hand is absolutely amazing. There really wasn't a dull moment for me. There was 1 section that was generic MMO questing with some Moogles, but that doesn't last long and it's back to the great story telling from before.
