Mass Effect is not so literal about it, they go for the same feelings generally and mostly in ME1. The Citadel is 80s sci-fi personified, the expansive white, round areas, the music, the serene environment with the plants and water, etc.

It's awesome. It's the reason I do not regret paying for the game despite the shitty ending. A group pve mutliplayer with waves of enemies.

I still play it from time to time after so many years, that should tell you enough. It's fun, a quick immersion in ME with a different flavour each time due to the other players, you never know if you will get a good squad or a shitty one.

There are some autistic upgrades and collectibles if you are into that. The different characters and upgrades are pretty cool as well and let you customize different build with abilities and different gameplay.

I hope they make the landing animations after jumping more fluid. In this demo they look really choppy and clunky.

I hope the facial animations are better than what we saw in the demo as well. There's a weird disconnect between the faces when they're in motion and when they return to a natural, default expression.

But at least we got to see a Male Ryder, so EA is pushing the muh women thing too hard (yet).

Those two sentences, especially the first one, are perfect examples. It reads really unnatural and stunted. Same with the first sentence in 3rd paragraph. Better to just make it "Shepard moved towards the pilot who had now turned to face the airlock. Presumably because he heard it open." Or something like that.

Also your fourth paragraph is a mess in general, with two male characters talking to each other who you call "he" multiple times. Which makes it confusing to see who is the one doing the talking. Use new paragraphs or at least new lines if another characters starts talking, instead of having it all in one continuous paragraph with no breaks. Look at >>154475972 for instane.

Mass effect kinda sucks as a scifi setting, the story and themes aren't very interesting and the world doesn't seem that cool. I wish there was an ME style game but with better writing and a cooler setting.

It feels really odd to force a single topic into multiple sentences just for the sake of brevity. I'll trim down the second sentence for sure though

I can see what you're saying about the dialogue though, I haven't ever written fiction, and I have the paragraph system ingrained from years of academic writing. I'm going to look at some other fiction to try to figure out how to format the dialogue properly. Is this an improvement at least?

Yes it's better. However you don't have to constantly write "he said" and "he continued" after every line that gets spoken now. It's perfectly clear that someone is speaking, and when structured like this it's also already clear who is doing the speaking.

Like in the sentence where Shepard introduces himself you could easily get rid of "he said crisply" to make the sentence feel more natural and to get a better flow going. The sentence alone should make it obvious that Shepard is speaking crisply, as does the next sentence where Shepard's rigid demeanour is mentioned.

And about long sentences, there's nothing wrong with them as long as you don't overuse them.

I think you actually give too much info on the Normandy. You could convey the right idea about it just by saying it was a state of the art craft, a one of a kind space vessel able to avoid detection in space.

THEN you explain that in space everything gives off heat and it is impossible to hide, only the Normandy can capture and store its own heat, temporarily, to appear invisible in the infrared.


Personally, I think I would leave out any mention of Nihlus until he appears when Shepard is looking at the ship. Then you describe physically what a turian is. Maybe add a line from Nihlus, like "Given our species' history, this joint venture has been quite unprecedented". Obviously all of us know what said history is the first contact war, but a reader unfamiliar with Mass Effect would be intrigued.

It alludes to the fact that turians are enemies turned friends without going off on a tangent about it.

I think that rather than switching the POV to Nihlus while they' re in the decontamination chamber, that you could keep it on Shepard. However have Shepard notice that Nihlus appears oddly satisfied by Shepard's questions. That conveys to the reader something about what Nihlus is thinking, just as Shepard might be putting some pieces together. Shepard after all is the protagonist.

I'm curious about this hijacking thing though. I suspect I get the idea, but I don't know how realistic it is that the Alliance would reward someone for committing a crime. It might, in my opinion, be better to keep the unconventional promotion concept limited to Shepard and his uncommon valor on Elysium. I think Joker being a bit of insubordinate is probably enough of a quirk. The kind of thing that would count against most pilots, if they didn't have Joker's skill and presumably, record.

I'm not a military expert by any means, but shouldn't Joker be addressing Shepard as "Sir"? It might be part of his characterization, but if so it seems like the kind of thing this tight-laced Shepard would notice. Seems like the two ought to have conflicted a bit more in the game before earning one-anothers respect.

RE: Joker. The brittle bones are dumb and it sounds like the comic is dumb. ME1 was more grounded than the later games in that regard.


I don't remember every bit of dialog in the game by heart, but I know I heard "Sir" a lot. It's also just a military custom, like saluting or standing at attention or "at ease".

That might be a big change to the character. I once re-imagined ME where in ME2 it was discovered that Joker had been a Cerberus agent. Shepard uncovered his birth certificate or something which revealed the brittle bones... that had since disappeared. It was then revealed that Joker agreed to let Cerberus try experimental surgery and therapy on him to cure his brittle bones, with him then being required to work for Cerberus afterwards. He did this because he had tested for the Alliance and gotten top scores as a pilot, but as soon as he failed the physical he was barred from entering.

I've always been fond of this idea, but, personally, I think a ME novel should stay true to the characters.

I just always thought the brittle bones was dumb and honestly I didn't even take it seriously until ME2. Seemed to me like Joker was always sitting because the devs just never bothered to put him anywhere else in the game except at his console.

It's your vision of Mass Effect, so it's up to you, but I think it is a very difficult thing to justify if you give it any thought.

Well, in my opinion what would make Shepard interesting is the challenges faced by Shepard. Perhaps someone who previously had a rather simplistic view of the galaxy and his place in it.

As a Spectre though he finds his duty to the Alliance and even his own race challenged. He'll have to figure out to really perceive and approach his role as a Spectre.

Is it just an appointment to benefit the Alliance and the human race? Or is all the big talk about galactic stability the real heart of it? Is the Council really interested in this for altruistic reasons or as a Spectre is Shepard really just a lacky meant to protect the status quo?

When Shepard finds dirt on the Alliance, what does he do? Does he tell the Council and damage the Alliance's relationship with them whilst boosting his own status and trust in the Council's eyes? Which is the right choice to make? After all, he might think he needs to show the Council that he's serious about the responsibility they put in him, but at the same time keeping the Alliance and Council on good terms with one another might also fall under "stability".

The people serving under Shepard on the Normandy are mostly Alliance personnel sworn to serve the Alliance and humanity. Can he ask them to risk their lives or reputations for missions that the Alliance brass might perceive as subversive?


How does Shepard reconcile the beacon visions and the threat of the Reapers? The more he learns about Saren's treason the more obvious it should be to him that far more is at stake than Humanity's standing or his own military career. Shepard's actions might have consequences that won't be known for decades or even centuries.


Remember that a Spectre is a political actor, not just a commando.

If Shepard is a colonist > War Hero, then he might be a rather simple man in his outlook on life and his job. He might just like the military for the adventure, and perhaps for the sense of justice it gives him in fighting back against the kinds of evils that destroyed his childhood.

The Spectre appointment might be something he doesn't really appreciate at first... and might feel very stressed and anxious later as the real responsibility of it dawns on him. Ditto for an Earthborn. No longer is the context of his job just "do what you are told in a timely fashion while the big boys upstairs worry about the details and the context."

Now there is really nobody above Shepard minute to minute to tell him what to do. His approach to Saren and his mission as a whole, as well as each individual operation he involves himself in, will be mostly entirely up to him. HE is the one who must look at the strategic picture of each move he makes, both in a military and a political sense. Another overlooked challenge is this: how do Tali, Garrus, Wrex, and Liara fit into the Normandy's chain of command? They aren't Alliance personnel and have no rank at all. Can they order around marines or Normandy officers?

Something else to consider is that a Space-born Shepard might be a more ambitious person. He might have joined the Alliance Navy specifically to become an officer, clime the ranks, and one day even enter the political scene as a politician. Many military officers do that and even rising to the higher eschelons of the military itself is a political game. Of-course, the revelation about the true nature of the galaxy (the Reapers) might be sobering... and genuinely frightening. The Ruthless origin fits well with that, as well as the War Hero one, but I like the Elysium thing more than Torfan. Colonist Shepard also has some blank years before joining the Alliance that could have been spent doing virtually anything. Perhaps he has foster parents. Maybe he feels alone in the galaxy, and the military alleviates that feeling

And being a colonist doesn't necessarily mean he was a farmer's son or anything. He could've been the child of a doctor and someone who works in agricultural sciences or something. Basically people that would encourage independent thought

What I'm thinking is this:
Shepard likes being a soldier. He likes the structure, the camaraderie, everything about it. He's ambitious, otherwise he wouldn't have the N7 designation. He's not blind to the politics of the galaxy, but he doesn't imagine himself as a mover and a shaker. He still hasn't really addressed his past, the clusterfuck on Mindoir or the violence on Elysium. I haven't thought so far ahead as becoming a Spectre or the reapers to be honest.

I'm not going to try to write a pure love story, but I do want the romance to be more interwoven into the story, along with camaraderie with the rest of the crew.

They don't have to be, but considering spaceborn Shep's mother is an Admiral, I think it is a strong possibility that spacer Shep had a more privilged life than the others and would already have a keener grasp of politics than the other backgrounds. A bit more educated and far-seeing, but a bit more arrogant at first. Even slightly out of touch with gruffer characters like Wrex or anyone else who has lived on the street.

Again, not set in stone, just something to consider.


Shepard in the game because he has to be everything and thus must be nothing specific. However the Shepard in your story can and should be fully fleshed out.

The only things that should be carried over from the game are these:

.) Shepard is an inspiring leader of men
.) Shepard is a deadly skilled soldier on the battlefield
.) Shepard is a shitty dancer


If Shepard is a real person, he might at times genuinely feel afraid of his enemy and worry that he isn't smart enough or isn't tough enough to succeed. I wouldn't imagine such feelings would be consuming, but they should rear their heads every now and then.


William Tecumseh Sherman is well known for his ruthless tactics in the American Civil War, but he was actually a man who hated war and was plagued with depression throughout much of it. He also felt that his campaign against the South, no matter how destructive, was none the less a necessary evil that ended a greater evil (the war).


So a ruthless Shepard might be cynical in his outlook on life, but that wouldn't mean he'd lack compassion or a sense of guilt over his actions. In fact, the cut dialog from ME3 where Renegade Shepard talks to a dying Anderson is a great example of this: plagued by guilt over the blood he has shed and probably terrified that he was wrong and it wasn't really necessary.


I'm not trying to tell you how to write your Shepard; just trying to give you ideas.

I guess there are two Shepards that I'm really, seriously considering as far as basic personality

Colonist Shep, War Hero or Ruthless, feels alone in the galaxy
or
Spacer Shep, War Hero or Sole Survivor (that might be interesting because it would mess with his ego), arrogant-ish, but not without reason
