so i want to make a map generator based on Animal crossing, where you have a random grid of map "chunks" containing predetermined objects (like rivers, houses, trees, etc), but i have absolutely no clue how to achieve this in Game Maker.

what would you suggest agdg?

I made some time to make a horse (I think his neck and head is too thin for his body or something it look more like a cow/bull body to me) and a pilgrim man.

I made the beard and glasses separate objects so that I could populate areas with random combinations of glasses and beards or neither. I plan to include necklaces, hats, and similar things like that so that larger groups of npcs will be more dynamically equipped.

I think I can also do something like, assign all the shirts and hats an array of materials or textures and have a script randomly choose one if a character interacts with a wardrobe or something so that on different in game days, some npc's will have different hats, or clothes. Which I think could be pretty neat.

Next assets to make are gonna be some kids, a cow, and then two or three types of monsters. Then some placeholder UI stuff, and see if we can figure out how to fight monsters and get loot to start getting some semblance of a game going here.

Well, if you wanna do it the hacky bullshit way, create an object that makes a ground sprite, then generates a bunch of other objects on top of itself. Call it chunk. Then make a bunch of versions of it. Then make a room that is x*y chunks, and fill it with spawners for random chunks.

Probably not the best way, but it would work.

i am making a translation gizmo, i am unprojecting a screen space ray from the camera into world space to make a line, and i find the closest point between 2 lines to find the position on the axis i am translating, but when translating the axis with a high perspective wrap, u get undesired results, the blue dot is the position where i would like the axis to be, i calculate this by projecting the axis line into 2d screen space, and doing a projection of the mouse position onto the 2d axis line, any ideas how to project the blue dot back onto the 3d axis line? blender seems to have this exact same issue, i would like a better solution

I dunno which game is yours, but smears aren't how you give something weight. If you want an attack animation to have weight, you just need to give the animation a lot of anticipation and follow-through, but very little of the actual swing.
For instance, 2 frames of your character bracing themselves, 1 frame for the actual weapon swing, and 3 frames of the follow-through/cooldown. If you want to use smears, which do help, then you would use them during the swing and on the first frame of the follow-through, or maybe just on the swing. But the most important part is making sure each part of the animation doesn't have the same amount of frames.

I want to make a small program for plotting 3D functions as surfaces.
The input of my program are the discrete points making up the surface (for now I just dump them from Matlab).


How could I model this?
Do all the points go in a GLfloat vertex buffer as triples (x,y,z) or should I rather keep the components for the vertices separate somehow?

I want to add axes and a grid at some point and guess I need to know where the original X and Y coordinates correspond to in both model and world coordinates

No need to separate out the components. When people talk about splitting up your vertices it usually means you keep coordinates in one buffer, normals in another, UVs in another, etc. AFAIK you only split up the vertices if some part of them is more likely to be updated than another (e.g. if it's static geometry but the UVs are changing, you would want a static buffer for the normals and coords but streaming for the UVs).

then parse the title, parse the description, then parse the nth choices the players have made (where n is the amount of choices separated by commas).

Then if you really want to go the extra level for ease of use, is make an editor where player create cards through gui elements and what they put in the gui is translated to the above script to get parsed.

obviously you would change this to suit your game. I don't know if they actually get choices or whatever.

Can you share what kind of coffee you drink? Preferably with some recipe?

I usually drink latte macchiato. Mine goes like this:
- Warm up some milk. Not hot, just warm. 2-3 deciliter is enough.
- Add 2 spoon of sugar.
- Get your milk foamer, and make a nice foam of 2-3 (or even 4) centimeters.
- Make one portion of usual espresso.
- Pour it on top.

There you go. If you can, get a transparent cup for this, because it looks cool. The more fat the milk has the better. What I do differently from most latte recipes is that I add the sugar to the milk and then make the foam. Because of this, the foam will have a taste, and it also will be hard, like when you make foam from eggs.

But try experimenting with even bigger sprites. Size in pixels is really important and once you decide on one all other sprites will have to be proportional. What I do is once I have a concept for one character I then make multiple versions of pixel art for it: ~16px high, ~32px high, ~64px high, ~100px and ~150px high and one 256px high and decide on what size to use based on those. I do it at least for the MC sometimes if I'm not sure I do another one or two, maybe an enviromental piece and another character like some enemy. It might seem like a lot of work but it's nothing compared to how much work there is to make all the sprites for a game and if you realize your game would look much better at bigger sprite res when you already have 200 sprites drawn, you're going to regret not putting couple extra hours into this kind of exploration.

A bit more dynamic gesture wouldn't hurt either. Your sprite is really stiff and boring.

It depends on the artist, the better the artist and the more work she has done. The more you have to pay, this includes the more exposure she has.

Technically you could probably find a decent artist for FREE (FREE!?!?!) but I wouldn't recommend it because people who work for free are flaky and will probably leave you hanging dry.

If there is monetary incentive people will work for you. So essentially you want people who are decent at art, don't have a lot of exposure, and are willing to work for free (but you still pay them because it is that extra insurance that garauntees that they will stay on the project for potentially longer.)

This does mean a lot of searching for you, checking tons of sites that people post their art. Such as tumblr and deviant-art.

didnt quite fix the control rotation problem i had, but i made do with a work around that seems intended for 3D. Also an issue with the mage character when he crouches, sprite goes through the floor, think its something to do with how UE4 imports the sprites but i couldn't find a fix for it. Gonna continue from here though and hopefully get round to fixing these problems later

So I wave a story pretty much written already. I want to make a jrpg but I suck at drawing. So I was thinking would it be easy to use RPG Maker and make like FF3? Also would it be easy to greenlight it on steam?

You set the camera after setting both player and platform coordinates.

in GM the highest ordered objects in the editor will have their code run before over the objects that are lower ranked in the editor (this can be a little annoying to keep track of). The object order is in fact the order each objects' step event will run.

In my opinion, for a person new to coding and just wanting to make a game, Game Maker would be a good option in the long run. There's a large amount of tutorials available for a lot of specific subjects, and there's a few active communities willing to help out, suck as the YYG Forums, or the /r/gamemaker subreddit.

If it's only an RPG, RPG Maker it is.

Depends on your phone. I have an s7 which my plan let me upgrade to. So total it was 200~. 100 for the device itself.

Its pretty good especially for the price. Though it has its limitions. Ill talk more about it when i get home.

Use Steamspy and look at the figures for other games which are (realistically) of a similar quality and scale to what you're making, (ideally with similar demographics).
