If you make something of any decent quality, and do even a token amount of PR, getting Greenlit is very, very easy.

Just having a reasonably trailer makes your game stand out from most submissions.

>500 sales TOPS

Yeah, no. That guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

Use Steamspy and look at the figures for other games which are (realistically) of a similar quality and scale to what you're making, (ideally with similar demographics).

Does anyone know any details re the animation techniques used in Rondo Duo?

I'm still not 100% as to whether its 2D, drawn in a 3D style with skeletal and warp deformation animation, or its cell shaded styled 3D.

(I'm heavily leaning towards thinking the former. Looks to me to all be prerendered loops of composited 2D. But would love to know more details about the techniques and tools used.)

Also: Flash loader? 9.2gb for a 2 hour game? wtf Japan.

If that's the case, the techniques themselves (2d skeletal models & deformation) would be the same.

Though, from what I can see, instead of working with the animation data within an engine via an SDK as you'd do with something like Live2D, the makers on Rondo Duo have just prerendered everything out and used those rndered loops as their assets.

-Which would explain both why it looks so nice and why the game is fuckhuge.

How would you write it so an NPC, which inherits from GameplayObject, would invoke its Speak event?

Im thinking RaiseEvent() would be in the base class that all my gameplay objects inherit from, and when an NPC wants to do Speak, it'd call its base.RaiseEvent(Speak), and then inside RaiseEvent it takes care of calling the pre and post events. So RaiseEvent would have to have an Action parameter that matches the Speak event, and I'm stuck there.

You're making assumptions that we actually know how your code is structured.

Do all GameplayObject's can "Speak", or is it unique to an "NPC".

The pre and post events, are they general events that get raised before and after EVERY type of event, or are they somehow unique to "Speak" and other types of events.

I honestly can't suggest anything without knowing what you actually want to do.

So RaiseEvent() could/should rightfully be called RaiseDankEvent(), and for each event that is unique to the class (Speak, ReceiveTendies) there'd be a corresponding RaiseSpeak, RaiseReceiveTendies?

I don't understand what "i" comes from in the body of RaiseEvent though. I get thats its a Lambda (r-right?) so instead of onEvent = i => i.Write(); can I say onEvent = myBaseClass.OnEventWriteLog() ?

is it a waste of time for a programmer to involve himself in learning 3d modelling. I want to learn to 3d model but I'm worried it might be a waste of time because if you had a good prototype you could probably get someone else to do it. I guess its more an insecurity as how can a programmer compete with people who went to school and took classes to learn how to texture and model.

I said null REFERENCES for a reason.

References are only useful if they're guaranteed to refer to an existing object. C++ has bad references since they can be invalidated and C# has bad references because they could also be null. Rust has good references.

>I call it my billion-dollar mistake. It was the invention of the null reference in 1965. At that time, I was designing the first comprehensive type system for references in an object oriented language (ALGOL W). My goal was to ensure that all use of references should be absolutely safe, with checking performed automatically by the compiler. But I couldn't resist the temptation to put in a null reference, simply because it was so easy to implement. This has led to innumerable errors, vulnerabilities, and system crashes, which have probably caused a billion dollars of pain and damage in the last forty years.
t. Tony Hoare, the inventor of the null reference

Also, why would I use events when I can just insert a call to the function at the end of the initial function who'd normally be the event?

Could you make me the simplest, to the point example? Every one I find adds a bunch of useless bullshit and it's too weird for me.

>My goal was to ensure that all use of references should be absolutely safe, with checking performed automatically by the compiler. But I couldn't resist the temptation to put in a null reference, simply because it was so easy to implement. It's because Linux is shit and the only reason why people use it is to feel superior to others.
If your OS requires you do anything more than
>Go to website
>Download
>Run
Then it's shit and that's exactly the opposite what happened when I used debian, I was solving problems to fix other problems to fix other problems, I needed to fucking open terminal when I wanted to edit source file just so I can add/edit a repository.

I don't give a shit if I put in a "little more effort" into it I'd solve the problem, I shouldn't be putting any effort into using an OS.
It's really only these kind >>154498361 of people that use Linux, it's not really a surprise it's not a popular desktop OS.

Collision only removes the component of movement in the normal direction.

Usually, this just means instead of pushing the player out backwards once a collision has been detected, you push them out along the normal.

I love it. It's great for game jams and prototypes. Favorite 2d engine without an editor. It's trivial to obtain the source code and assets from the released builds, that might be an issue for some people.
>Have there been any cool games here made with it?
Not a lot, Move or die it's the most "popular" game that uses it.
If you're asking about aggy games, most of them have died for some reason (which I think is related to how difficult it becomes managing big projects in love2d unless you're super organized). Gatedev used to do amazing stuff with it. There was an isometric game made for zeldajam which was pretty good. And always in our hearts, pic related.

Look at art.

Browse movements you find pleasing to the eye or think might translate well into what you want to make. Anything. Be they modern, digital or expressionist oil painting.

Just find aesthetics which interest you and learn from them in terms of tone, palette, use of line etc.

Don't limit yourself to taking influence from other games.

I find keeping things like moodboards to be quite useful when putting together inspiration for artstyle aesthetics.

UI consists of 100 elements which are all placed based on the resolution and each other. Let's recalculate their position every frame.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

You just pass the resolution in and draw everything based on it. Immediate-mode style, not retained-mode style.

Besides, you can easily abstract out "do thing based on thing only if thing changed" without resorting to hidden coupling using messages.

I didn't shade quite yet since I'm taking the route of quickish art to start then refining the old stuff as I gain more experience.

Even starting at practically zero, it's a fun journey and is very relaxing.

Try drawing real life naked people first, that's the quickest way to get better at drawing.

Try not to think of shapes as 2d objects think of them in terms of light and shadow. For example an eye isn't an almond shape it's a 3d sphere with the eyelids over it etc.

It may seem like overkill right now if your goal is to draw cartoons but trust me a good understanding of the physical world will help with trying to draw anything you put your heart to!!

alright let me type this out before I go and implement it

an enemy can detect the player in 3 ways: taking damage, seeing, and hearing. any time any of these 3 things happen, a timestamp and location is logged.

if the AI has detected the player within the last 5 seconds, it moves to the last known location. if the AI can see the player, it follows the player specifically. when it gets within attacking range, it will attack.

after 5 seconds of no detection, it will return to its spawn location

I've been toying with UE4 terrain procgen writing simple plugins for it and I think I've got a good foundation for something so far, do you think a fortlike could be interesting if it had a tech tree similar to Rust's? This is a good mentality. The likelihood of a one man army making a hugely successful game is very slim. Too many people get into gamedev trying to make money, but making money is the hardest part. So it's best to treat it as a hobby until you get really fucking good, or get a team.

I had that in, and took it out, many times. I can add it back in but I figured having a dedicated button is quicker and simpler.

Okay I'll work on those, they don't seem to bad to me but I played this way too many times while testing.

Started working on redesigning the mimic fight. It won't have any melee attacks natively now, and its vanilla attacks will be based on enemies from the area it is found in. The first one, the fire ball from the enemy in the tutorial, can be hit back at him for damage. If it copied your regular ice attack, it can reflect it back after getting hit by the fireball once. The speed of the projectile increases per hit.

The best I have time for is making tunes or writing up some concept docs to further reinforce the things that I will never be able to do alone.
>>
>>154521381
that is a bad idea, i used to have to deny pull requests because the code some people sent was absolutely horrible and then i had to tell them that they just wasted their time basically

Anyone able to help

Proud moment aggy, my game just werks even if its resized across multiple monitors. I was so sure the 3d mouse picking would break, but it still works.

Also solved an error that only occured in the built version, I guess having empty entries in a list is cleaned up by the Unity editor maybe, but you can't foreach through them and call item.DoSomething() in the built version. Would recommend Log Viewer for anyone, its free

basic AI is up and running again. the AI now only detects you if they see or hear you (unfortunately Unreal 4 doesn't have sound propagation so it only works if there's a direct line of sound from the source to the enemy). however, this opens up the possibility of invisibility/sneak spells in the future if I want. attacking an enemy will also clue them in to where you are, such as an aoe spell hitting something behind a corner

they'll follow you as long as they continue seeing or hearing you for x seconds (set to 0.5s in the webm for testing), at which point they'll run back home. also, enemies now rotate if you try to move around them when they're in attack range instead of just standing there staring at where you used to be

I have a few more things to add/adjust, and then I have to basically re-implement the same logic for turn-based mode.

Are you tilting the characters/world and not the camera?

I'm kind of getting burned out on deving my current project and i want to take a break but i still want to dev..
shit, i got an idea, i checked unity tutorials in my language on yt and there are only very few (and they are shit made by teenagers), i wonder how many subs and views i could get if i made a semi-professional tutorial series..
like if it got me just $50/month that would be awesome as fuck

Is this what you're doing? this would be a little harder than simply tilting the camera.

Make an asset for the unity store instead.
>>

>$50/month
way too optimistic
>>
>>154543086
Anon you can make $50 of half a day's worth of work at fucking mcdonalds
>>
>>154543187
not really, several years ago i made a video about how to hack WEP and i got over 200k views (sure it took like two years but i got them) and it wasn't even in english

>>154543171
i can't art and only successful nonart assets on the store are usually shaders, which are pain in the ass to make and large scripting projects which i don't want to scope that big

She sounds worth it. Rebuild yourself into a new independent dev who makes shit happen more than ever before. I realized after my first (5-ish year) relationship that focusing on yourself is more productive and important. Good luck, anon.
>>
>>154543280
You have to work at mcdonalds then though...
>>
>>154543280
Yeah but..
1) the way you make that $50 won't be by doing something you really enjoy
2) at mcdonalds there won't be that tiny tiny chance where your videos maybe get a traction and start making you a minimum vage so you can live off of just making them
>>
>>154543280
>$50 of half a day's worth
in which fucking magical dimension son
i used to work in fast food and i made $2/hour

No problem.

You can't imagine how much I wanted to play this. I Have been following it for a while.

Even with all the obvious placeholders and unpolished sketchy graphics, this is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and professional looking game in agdg.

Gameplay is great so far. Some sort of backdash or blocking would probably add a little bit of variation that would make wonders for it.
First time you find a portal it should tell you wich key to press to enter on it, ot use the same button you use to skip the message introducing you to the portal.

This probably is an issue in my end since I'm testing it in a toaster right now (will test on my computer later) but I got a black screen all the time on any widowed mode. Everything worked perfectly on fullscreen thoug

no reason not to do it.... but 50 dollars a month is unlikely, syndicated advertising is a race to the bottom so however much you think youtube ads make now halve it for race to the bottom and halve it again because you're being too optimistic and halve it once more to get the likely average and then throw it in toilet because ad money is shit.

Seattle pushed $15/hr minimum wage and the whole country thinks they're nuts. "But the cost of labor goes up and those jobs will disappear!"

It's great being surrounded by crazies who keep up the extreme wealth divide by expecting the omnipotent free market to guide us to justice.

It varies so much. I have a video with 800 views that has 80 cents revenue, and a video with 12k with only $1.

And then I have one with 60k views but only 3 cents

Learning anything with a blank slate is always the most difficult. Once you've done that much, re-learning is pretty trivial. Your brain is neat that way.
