Nations with high base science, lots of mines and wide.
Not necessarily together though.

Tradition Korea/Babylon can do well with Order through the 25% science bonus.

It's not really bad for anyone, but I guess Inca would have a bit of a negative synergy since Incas have less mines. Not bad, just less of a bonus there.

Persia.

Expected them to be in at the start since they've been in each vanilla installment since 2.
>>

They would be covered by Persia (their base) or even Turks or Mongols (the ethnicity of their rulers).

Timur would make a really kickass Mongol leader though if multiple leaders per civ is a thing.

unfortunately covered by france

just like danes or geats are covered by denmark or sweden, saxtons or angles are covered by either germany or england

i'm suprised celts even got their own civ, but I assume it's because if they decided to specifically include the scottish, welsh or irish, who were then split into even more different tribes, they'd get analcrusaded people who probably aren't even celtic in the slightest
>>
>>154327536
Anglo-Saxons ARE the English, Danes are Denmark, and the Gauls can be covered by a generic Celtic civ.

OTOH they split the Vikings up into Norway/Sweden/Denmark, so we may see a Celtic split yet, including the Gauls. I have an increasingly weird feeling we're going to see Firaxis go Paradox and release a ton of Civs as DLC, a lot more than expected.

The Dutch and the Portuguese, although they'll likely make it in anyway in the future. If they need a scenario idea, do what they did and make a random new world scenario like in Civ V.

The Goths since I think they're cool, and also add the Huns back. Hell, add in those various Germanic civs from the Fall of Rome scenario, like the Vandals, Franks, and so forth.

The Italians, but they never will make it in because Rome is in already.

Sumeria, Babylonia, AND Assyria all in the same base game. Maybe the Phoenicians but Carthage tends to take their spot.

The Sioux to go along with the Iroquois. Mali again. Maybe a generic Bantu civ to go with the Zulu.

Honestly, my overall rule is the more, the merrier.

Just had an idea to make ship design perhaps a bit more interesting and varied in Stellaris.

So there are four classes with icons shown as 1 diamond to 4 diamond.
Battleships are 4 diamond, but Fallen Empire sdon't have Battleships, they have Battlecruisers as their 4 diamond ship.

My idea is that instead of Battleship Tech, maybe you had 4 different battleship techs and only one of them appears naturally in your tech tree.
So you got Dreadnought as your 4-Diamond class ship, then you fight ayylmaos with Battlecruiser, research their debris and get lucky and get access to their types.

Battleships may have access to more Large slots, while Battlecruisers may have access to more slots in general. Dreadnought have more defensive slots.
For example how they can differ.

In sci fi shows the different races tend to have very different ships and this could add to that.

I'm going to try to sketch out a framework for a proper nomadic Civ that doesn't have any cities.

>start with a handful of military units, each one representing 1 pop
>food upkeep but no gold upkeep, instead units harvest resources from surrounding tiles
>harvesting provides double yields, but harvested tiles become barren for a number of turns, necessitating that you keep moving
>units can get upgrades for herds of livestock or merchant caravans
>new units are created by expending stockpiles of food and production
>can't produce science, but automatically unlocks techs through eureka moments
>possible restrictions on when you can take over and rule cities

This'd be a generic nomad civ that you could tweak and augment to fit any other kind of civ.

Maybe for a semi-nomadic civ like the Zulus, you could have the option to build kraal tile improvements on cattle that give extra food and xp when harvested.

Or for the Israelites, you have the option to take over cities while still in the ancient era, whilst other nomadic civs have to wait until the classical or medieval era to do so.

If anyone has better ideas I'd love to hear them.

So I figured I'd see how the enemy thought.

>Interview: Endless Space 2’s Devs On Why They Traded Independence For Sega
>“Endless Legend has proven that it’s possible to add a strong narrative layer to an otherwise very systemic game,” says Girard. “4X games are, in essence, systemic games where you put game mechanics together and then have an experience emerge, but then we proved it was possible to have a great story arc for each faction and lots of cool stuff that made it unique compared to other 4Xs.”

>>154431792
>if you play on higher difficulties you have absolutely zero wonder contention for most of the game
I just want to disagree with this bit. You have better contention than vanilla early on because the AI doesn't get free techs (iinm) at the start. In vanilla you never can get wonders.

>have to settle on hill
Actually I think vox fixes the vanilla in that regard because settling on hills give city tiles one extra yield in vanilla.

>tradition is simply far better than the other two starting policies
That is much less the case than vanilla. Progress allows you to actually build improvements in a vast empire without forking out the gold for 100 workers and Authority can be terrifying for a war civ.

Civ 6 seems to have a lot of cool features in the pipe, but I wouldn't count that among them.
>>
>>154444041
Yeah, I was hoping they would do something like that spinoff game: Call to Power.

In that game, you could put up to 9 units in a tile, and battles would consist of the two armies damaging eachother based on the combined stats of the units. Ranged units had to be behind melee units. Grouping units like this made moving large masses of forces both strategically interesting (as far as the game itself allowed) and more simple.

I really want to see something like that on a hex grid, but it looks like civ VI just lets you combine a few units. Maybe individual units will be really powerful and make it not so important to have armies too cumbersome to mnove around and have the game be fun.

Because they have so many bonuses that one tile tundra island cities grow to 30 pop and can support an amount of units that no human will.

But because of the way unit stacking works they will trip over their units anyway. At least in the CTP way they would be able to have consistently large and optimal fighting forces whereas you might have to stick to 5-7 unit stacks to cover your front with your non-bonus based army.

please kys immediately
>>
>>154450347
Except that's not what I said at all and you know that.
>>
>>154450478
It's kind of what you're implying by favoring one unit per tile.

One unit per tile has the inherent flaw that it takes consistently very little production to max out the combat capability of your units on a tile. One of the best units at your tech level and it's as strong as it will ever be.

Multiple units per tile means that you can strategically assign a portion of your production to strengthening your position in an individual tile, giving you the ability to over deploy or under deploy. And if you have a strong industry, underdeployment is less likely.

Conversely, I agree with you that infinite doomstacks are bad, because the AI with all its bonuses can make a single tile practically invincible, and completely mitigate any strategic posturing you might do to retain a localized advantage over a superior force.
>>
>>154450478
In practice 1upt is exactly just that. Enjoy your continent spanning war fought with 8 to 12 units and beating braindead AI in 100 to 1 k/d ratio with your sikk skillz
>>
>>154450729
>>154450734
Nothing of the sort was ever implied, and you SHOULD know this.

Because production isn't the sole determining factor of a war doesn't mean it doesn't matter at all.
>>
>>154450729
I also left out a key point that with death carpets, the AI only fails because it builds a variety of stupid units like AA guns and anti tank guns and doesn't optimize their army at all for the situation. Their stupid unit choices actually hurt them. It's also kind of inherently a problem that such units end up having no reason to be built because they take up more of the important resource, space, than can be made up with by their limited strategic advantage.

In limited stacks, putting a couple AA and AT guns in your stack might really help you, and you'd have a reason to build them.

>>154450907
But in Civ V/BE, production really does end up not mattering past the threshold of "do I have enough to fight this war competently at all or not."

It's very binary. You either get rolled because you don't have enough units or you have a defense that the AI is pretty much incapable of breaking and then production ceases to matter for both of you.
>>
>>154451119
>But in Civ V/BE, production really does end up not mattering past the threshold of "do I have enough to fight this war competently at all or not."
That's not true and you know it's not true. Production does matter. You can't win a war with one unit.
>>
>>154451471
1 unit is not that threshold, but you can win a war with 12. And that's not a ton of production.

In my current England game I'm sweeping the entire world with my first 5 archers and galleas. They're now LBM and SOTLs, and I don't need any production. I can spam whatever I want because there is no way for the AI to contest my army as long as it's in the right position. And I'll only need to build units again at all when my LBM become useless gatling guns. m

If the AI was able to produce a force of units that had any way of making me think my force was at risk or needed to replace units, production would matter. But it doesn't. The only thing stopping me from winning is the tedium of sending my units around the globe to take the capitals one by one because I've achieved the critical mass where any more units would just encumber me and get in the way.
>>
>>154451903
I agree, and this is another symptom of the one unit per tile crap introduced by civ 5, you can do what you are doing simply because the innate limitations of force concentration caused by inability to effectively use large force.
>>
>>154451903
Even without losing a single unit production matters. The amount of production you allocate to producing those units, whether or not you have five or twenty, matters to how much your military accomplishes by the end of the game. You may only hold your own on your borders or you may go domination victory.
>>
>>154452041
Production in war only matters in multiplayer, where humans can overcome the system limitations by using their intellect, in singleplayer you can conquer the world as soon as your archers gets range upgrade.
>>
>>154452103
Again, production matters against the AI, as I said. It just matters less. That doesn't mean it doesn't matter at all, which is literally all I've been arguing against. Some anon accused me of saying production shouldn't matter AT ALL just because I said 1upt was good.

>>
>>154452654

I really like it, but I have some problems with it. I wish people here knew about it or were good at it to help me play it.

It seems like the type of game where research is pretty overpowered; you'll quickly have enemies with more powerful ships then you if you fuck around like I tend to do. However the game itself has some interesting mechanics.

Your ships are filled with components up to their size maximum. Unlike other games, hits to your ships damage the components, and if all components are damaged the ship will be destroyed. Obviously this ship damage is cool because damage ships won't fight as well without some of their guns, engines, and so forth. Armor is always hit first before other components, and shield generators absorb up to a certain amount of damage first before anything else gets hit.

The really cool thing about all this is the designs you can put on the ships. For example, you can make a ship only filled with supply storage, no weapons or armor. Obviously this ship seems useless except that if you combine this ship with a fleet it will share its supplies with the warships, acting as a support vessel extending the range (and ammo, since supplies are used up when moving and for combat) of the entire fleet. Similarly, you can create repair modules on ships that act as repair ships for the rest of the war fleet.

Since I haven't gotten very far, but played the game a lot in my youth, I think the game works on a kind of counter/counter system for weapons and defenses. For example some races get access to psychic weapons which can mind control one of your ships. If you research computers however, you can replace the crew with a computer core which doesn't gain experience but is immune to psychics. You can build engine damage weapons, or shield penetrating weapons, multiple kinds of armor like absorbing or reflective, drones and point defense that work against missles and drones, etc.

I actually never played 5.

This game has too much nostalgia for me. Me and my step brother would stay up all night, sleeping in the living room floor, giggling and passing a shit old laptop back and forth on our turns. Once we found each other, we would type insults and wage war or attempt diplomacy. We'd take great care not to show the screen to the other, to avoid spoiling the territory and plans.

I honestly don't know anything about 5, is it any good? I just love the idea space inside of 4, it's got so many concepts. It even has fucking ship boarding! But it's age is really showing and the lack of documentation about things is really rough. Scouring the web for how some of this shit works is like impossible.

>>
>>154467015

Seriously - it's a 'Connect the dots' simulation.

You get some dots (planets), connect them to the home dot (planet) to provide lootz & make it grow.
Then you go out & get more dots to connect.
Research is as per usual suspects - but lots more confusing.
Politics (diplomacy) is a Yu-gi-oh game to get the dots.
Combat is two blobs (circles - literally) meet & fire phazors.

Shipbuilding is the only interesting part, tho - since the size of the parts can be scaled: as in - put a Bridge, Engine & Fuel part together, and you've got yourself a Ship.
If parts are size 10 - you got yourself a size 30 ship - if they're size 1000 - you got yourself a size 3000 ship ... you get the picture.

I have 4, never played it but I've played 5. It has a lot of the mechanics you've listed, but its a full 3D map and such. totally moddable of course, which I think 4 is but again never played so I'm not sure.

its a real cunt to get running well on a modern system. if you try to play at 1080p opening ANY UI drops the already-low framerate into single-digits. leaving it on default resolution in a window seems to work just fine.

what do you need help with?

>>
>>154483975
it's still just an assumption
>>
>>154484383
I try to play expansionist as hard as possible.
I hammer out levels into applied research until I can't get a level every turn or two, then go straight for atmosphere processors. I think they're under Stellar Manipulation? the one that doesn't give the facility that gathers all 3 resources.

for starter ships I make cheap decent boats that are quick. Usually the AI does something similar and it becomes a fight of who has more, with the winner depending on whether I remembered to put enough ordinance storage on my ships.

Carriers are fucking OP. I distinctly remember deleting fleets much bigger than mine simply by having a couple handy. Give your fighters supply-based weapons with a lot of storage and they'll delete anything in your way.
Meson blasters are OP as fuck and you should get them. decent range, all supply, bullshit damage output.

I make larger planets research outposts since the devs patched out being able to stack Space Yards, and you don't really need many places to build ships to have a decent navy.

You might not be able to out-tech the AI--I have never been sure I had a tech lead or not until my atmosphere processors finish. With another 20+ planets, then I'm sure I have the lead at least in production capacity.
>>
>>154486092

Pic related is what I consider worth crafting so far (I have 0 precious stones / 3 type of woods / 2 types of metals unlocked atm). Gold Signets (Gold+Ancient Wood) are also good for a little bit of (+2) extra Magic and for +5 Feint (SOC/TACT).

This flue is a little bit redundant imho, as certain classes tend to born / come with relatively high Speech to begin with and Beasts are usually easy to beat. I just unlocked Dragon Leather as resource, now that will surely send my RPs to the sky.

>anyway, how is your game? getting better? I still can't figure out how to beat the late game harder challenges, this freaking game is so hard

I never had any issues with the game's difficulty, though I spend the last 50-60 rounds unlocking shit and crafting (I'm at round 314) atm. Especially since I stumbled into a semi-spoiler about the Cosmic Tree quest, and I'm pretty close to the end of it.

Exploring the crafting options more and slowly arriving to top-materials is really enjoyable, while random quests keep my #1 group occupied in the meantime. It won't take that long to have my survivors running in end-game gear. I just don't want to rush it.

It's not that much, I could have easily finished it by the round of ~250. Also, you mean 4 white skull enemies? They can be challenging but I regularly beat 3 skull enemies even with my Gatherer teams (2 dedicated Gatherers, 1/2 dedicated Fighters, 1/2 Support).

And by end-game gear, I meant items like this. Ironically, I don't even have Dragon Bones unlocked: got this from a Dwarven Smith who just showed up in my village. I gave it to an Elven Wanderer who I just recruited by curing his Darkness curse. He's deadly with it.

I ask because I've heard pretty good things about it, even though I'm sure it's not perfect it sounded from others that it was actually pretty good as far as AI gets.

I know, right? The nasty part is the 22 Leech (=guaranteed heal every turn when DMG is dealt with the weapon), combined with the Elves' fix Piercing DMG modifier (if the last card on the table belongs to the opponent, it puts before him and automatically does a free attack) it's golden.

> I spent the majority of the game without any new incomer at all

Recruiting newcomers is the easiest from random events. Fresh example: I went to hunt down Slavers, kill a 3-skull Spider nest, inspect a Tower then do the Hanged Man quest. During this trip, I managed to get 4 new people, two from pic related event. I didn't even know it's possible!

As I had this multiple times, I knew one options makes me cursed and another (Veles-specific) earns my semi-rare loot. Now, this time I had a Sage with 10+ Magic on me, the curse option appeared and I was able to recruit him. Later, these happened: >>154433775 , >>154434853 .

Overall, I think you should start new game(s) on lower difficulty until you get a favourable map. Then try to rebuild everything from scratch, allowing yourself enough time to figure out the mechanics and whatnot. Picking the more suitable Deity and Warrior starting focus would help a lot.

Theodora is never threatening enough to worry about making a comeback because of a liberation or two.
>>
>>154531295
I'm of the opinion that the more developed cities yo have the better. Since it had already been conquered once, it probably didn't have too much, but since it's a capital (That means 2 luxuries a little extra population and maybe some more buildings) it's definitely worth keeping.
Assuming he had the happiness of course.

>>
>>154535225
>8 eras
1 less than bwn, 1 more than vanilla civ 5. there are less techs overall (because some are put into the civic tree) but it also seems that tech research is going to be a bit slower because of districts and shit. if you dont settle by a mountain, you're not going to get much science until you start building up more districts. cant just purchase a library and shit like in civ 5 in every city and just go from there.

Thanks, the only issue is that the only Nimblewood source is far up North and we're separated with a massive mountain chain. Not worth the hassle due to the 4/5 skull lairs, plus I have other important resources closer.

I'm trying to figure out a new standard outfit for my Gatherers and this seems to be the sweet spot. (From Spidersilk, it's 28kg / 12 Armor.) A worthy step-up from Reptile Vests (20kg/4A) or Smith's Aprons (~60kg/7A).

So I was listening to Hardcore History today and he was going into detail about the death of Cyrus the Great and how Herodotus said he fell at the hands of Tomyris. But he also says that it's sometimes debated if she ever actually existed.

Could she be another Dido for the Civ games? Also how are you supposed to pronounce Scythian? Like scythe, or skith?
>>
Is Thea any good now? I played it about a year ago and it sucked. Doing the same shit over and over again until your deity levels up got boring.
>>
>>154540284

Of course it's "debated" if she ever actually existed. It's the same as every female leader. Their roles in history are always extremely overstated, if not mythical.
>>
>>154540574

No it's debated because the only people that wrote about her never met her.
>>
>>154540327
Playing any game for the sake of playing will never be enjoyable. Just sayin'. Levelling up Deities are more like the side-effect of multiple playthroughs instead of being the game's main goal. Recently, the game got a big DLC (for free), but if you already tired of the in-game mechanisms there's no point to return.

>>154540284
I'm not a native speaker but multiple language uses the "skith" pronunciation, and I don't see why would English be an exception.

>>154540574
Boudica's existence and rebellion is decently documented for a female leader. Overall, it might be still far from the sufficient standard, but incomparably better than (e.g.) Dido's.

So in Stellaris I had an idea. What if the entire galaxy declared war on you if you got too big? After a certain point you're death balling through smaller Empires so you should be considered a galactic threat.

If the Galaxy united against you, it might actually make the post Crisis game more interesting.
>>
>>154537218
Pay attention to the dialog box, sometimes the AI tries to renegotiate a previous deal that they no longer consider good enough.

>>154545847

No. (Not yet)

As a Grand Strategy game the game is less about fulfilling 'victory' conditions and more about doing your own thing and forging a story. When you feel your place in the galaxy is good enough then you can just quit the game yourself, considering it over.

And yes we all know everybody is going to complain about Stellaris, it's the big meme, it's an alright game.

Here's the map after the third "Great burning". There were three "Great burnings" in total that were basically massive nuclear exchanges and dozens of cities were razed in a short span of time. The first great burning consumed the entire Iroquois peninsula, which in this map is the Cyan peninsula on the Eastern continent. Second great burning was when I razed about half of the Roman cities on the Eastern continent before the last push to take over the entire continent and defeat Rome. Third great burning is when I launched my entire nuclear stockpiles on my own cities and razed everything apart from the CS and old Capitals, which I liberated to get back a few old friends into this desolate Earth.

In the pic, it's the map 1000 turns after this >>154556928

The Civs you see on the map don't have technology to scrub fallout, so I had to help them a bit with that, but most of the land is still irradiated

Siam has already conquered Zulus and Poland after I liberated them and I think they're in the modern era soon. Austria is in Industrial Era and just chilling out behind a huge mountain chain between them and Siam.

Polynesia is... Well, I dunno wtf they're doing. They conquered Iroquois on the Eastern continent and founded two cities nexxt to the old Iroquois Capital, but that's about it.

Theodora and Austria are fighting on my old home continent since they have two cities there as you can see.

I thought the promotions were still there, but most of them were just useless.

In vanilla ranged promotions functioned the same way so they still gave a bonus if a ranged unit became a melee unit.
That way it was even better to have a Crossbow become a Rifleman.
Since you could get +65% in open from the ranged promotions and then +60% from the Melee promotions.

+50% on defense, +125% on open.

Siam's stirring up some shit. They took over Constantinople and founded two new cities.

Nuclear weapons were banned.

Siam made peace with Theodora and Austria joined Indonesia in war against Theodora.

Theodora is the only civ with no nukes and everyone hates Theodora with passion for some reason. Should I provide Theodora with some military units to balance things out? I could purchase one mechanized infantry in every city and haul them over the ocean to her in about 20 turns or so.

I'm also building a fleet of carriers with fighters to establish surveillance over every upstart civ.

There's only a small group of military units in the Eastern continent looking over Austria.

My capital officially became the most populous city in the history of the world. The original city of Rome was 59 when it fell to my forces in the final push against Augustus.

Regretably after Augustus fell and I liberated the continent, I realized that Augustus was only doing what he had to when he conquered the continent. Those civs that I liberated are complete cunts and even worse than I thought Augustus was back in the day.

Rip Augustus, you glorious bastard. Let my capital be the most glorious monument to your legacy as your old continent is torn apart the assholes you once subdued and I released back onto this Earth.

Also, in the top, you can see the burning fields that is this continent for most parts. The entire continent is burning like that apart from the areas around the cities.

These two fuckers are at it again.

Indonesians just can't get through to actually take over the city it seems. This is the second assault and I think it'll end up like the others before it. They haven't used nukes yet tho.

Austria took over Nicaea from Theodora in the South Western continent, Ramalamadingdong is doing fuck all, but building triplanes for whatever reason.

I sent a task force of 5 workers to assist Indonesia scrubbing fallout in the North Western continent.

I hope Indonesia keeps up with the intense colonization effort after dealing with Theodora. Would love to see a proper fight between them and Siam.

Vanilla CiV had ideologies too, they were just less fleshed out and exactly like other social policies.

I would hope that the expansions flesh it out more, such that with the industrial era, nations begin to redefine themselves in a new way different from previously, just like in reality.

Shit man, you just touched on my absolute pet peeve.

In these space 4x games, people can live on gigantic warships out in space for years, eons even at a time. Space bases and defense stations are common, as well as mining stations and so forth.

Yet you somehow are only allowed to build on habitable planets. It's retardation. Build a fucking biodome, or just live on an actual space station. Gas giant orbital stations would be a great place to live, you can siphon massive amounts of gases from the planet and probably get a huge amount of water from the rings/comets around the system.

It's just dumb that these games have FTL travel and warships with crews but yet somehow you can't live in a fucking moon base.
>>
>>154585875
>moon base
Shit man, this is what I want too.
I want stuff that comes out of a fucking SF show. Like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slYW7kkHyI4

I had high hopes for Stellaris when I saw you could have psychic armies and xenomorphs armies, but it's just numbers, it doesn't change the actualy warfare. You can't have xenomorphs infiltrating like some kind of genestealer cult.
>>
>>154585875

>>
>>154586262

Depends on matter of scale, technology and workloads.

For instance in Stellaris a single habitable planet mining station makes 2 minerals for the entire empire. If the pop required to staff this is about a billion, then this would imply that the mining stations out in space would be the same! But we'll argue otherwise- the billion pop unit is the full population, with the mineral thing only being like a primary export.

Still, how many people would you need to staff a mining station? Unless you argue it's fully automated, it would need some amount to keep functional. Even if it was only 1/1000 of the scale on a planet that's still a million souls. It would have to be huge am highly robust in its life support and gravity, not to mention size.

All in all, it's a game and we won't know unless Paradox tells us.

Civ VI looks a lot better than V from previews alone. Map is better. Civs have more distinct bonuses. Religion is probably better handled. 2 trees instead of one.

Best way to stop it from getting completely out of hand is to mod the costs for defenses down to a level where they can actually do their job of covering your important systems without bankrupting you, and adding versions of them that can actually hold out for a bit so you can move your fleets in.
