Let us see all the villages, show how massively varied they can get: maybe a silly example, but have the Hidden Stone be a city carved into enormous stalactites - basically like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vT6aeGzzEMA just with more apropriately shaped buildings.

Diversity is good for varied visuals, but put some thought, a sense of actual, profound differences behind it.

I can only assume, though, that most people wouldn't be watching it 100% of the time. As I've mentioned, it's mostly just typing. Even the combat isn't magnificently awe-inspiring. That being said, it's cool when the players try something new. Is it weird how Kishi has Sasuke miss potential interactions with the other rookies? He has Sasuke go first in the 3rd stage of the exams, missing everyone else's fight; then he has Sasuke end up going last in the finals, again missing everyone else's fight; and finally he has him in a coma for a month.

Honestly, I think it was intentional, but not to reinforce Sasuke's isolation or something. Kishi probably didn't know how to write potential interactions with the other Rookies.

So you agree that it was a limitation of Kishi's writing then? It's just odd that, outside the main groups, the context for interaction was fighting against, fighting against, and surprisingly, fighting but not against each other. And looking at Naruto himself is a bit harder with the additional panels to focus on. I don't think he's ever spoken with Tenten (or even said her name).

Star Trek Online. I like the game, in spite of my less-than-favourable post, but there's a shitty, time consuming limited time event filled with tedious portal-closing and space-thrashmob killing, to do with each alternate character and a unique reward you can only get this once. Do it every day for two weeks, on eight characters, so fuck me sideways and much as I might like the game, I'll probably give it a rest for a few months after this, unless some actual new content comes up.

Funny thing is I'd probably spend more actual time on the game, fucking around with whichever character I happen to work on at the time, if not for this event.

I used to be that way years ago, and finally switched to the manga when the anime began the filler with the crystel lady, which I actually found pretty good stuff, just clearly not the actual story.

The switch was most notable in a sudden almost-disappearance of humour, and I kind of wished the mange brought in some of the nicer anime-invented moves, be it Hinata's 64 Palm Guard or Naruto's combo technique with the toads.

And say what you will about the filler hell, there's certainly much to shittalk, but I do like the idea of having to actually go on missions, getting shit done as a ninja and subject of a mercenary city-state, with your own goals perhaps having to be put on the back-burner.
Throw in some pretty interesting interactions we never got in the manga with improvised teams like Shino, Ino and Naruto led by Anko, and the non-shit fillers tended to have a certain grounded characteristic to them.

Obviously it should all tie together in an actually competent story, and I both ignore the shit filler missions, have the glasses of my memory tinted a bit rosy with time AND I actively strove to forget all the bad episodes, but still there was decent stuff in there that should have been played up a bit more ion the manga too.

I started that particular line with the use of "perhaps" to convey that is what is commonly assumed. The point I made with using "inconsistent" was that one could make arguments that his personality during the Five Kage Summit arc (raving, homicidal) or Post-699 (familial blase) were following a logical if highly unlikable & haphazard foundation Kishi established or were firmly against what was previously set-up and Kishi forced his character to displays characteristics inconsistent with his previous disposition. I googled the Plinkett test. While it seems like a fun exercise, it only really serves to describe how memorable a personality is. Sasuke passing doesn't speak to whether he has depth or not, just like accurately describing Pakkun or Zaku doesn't necessarily make them multi-dimensional, deep characters.

I think you're kind of double dipping with quiet/calm/mask of in difference and arrogant/prideful, but well met either way. The Plinkett test isn't so much a test to tell if a character is great, but a test to see if they meet the baseline standard of a real-seeming person. If they feel like a real person, you can describe them easily without resorting to their powers and/or role in the story. Another test that I like to use is the spilled drink test. A character gets a drink spilled on them at a social gathering. How do they react? Most Naruto characters pass that test pretty easily because, to Kishimoto's credit, he makes easy to understand characters for the most part.

Well, it was right at the hype of Jiraiya going off to the Hidden Rain, Pein fight, then came dealing with all that came of that and the attack on Konoha. I still regard that as the very best part of the manga since the Chuunin Exams arc, and boy was I lucky the terrible animation didn't fuck my enjoyment up on that.

I fully caught up with the weekly updates right about when the Kage Meetup started, and we all know what a train wreck that was. I did read on, started skipping out on the fillers, but even after the high of the previous arc my enjoyment of the series took a serious dive there.

If an open world game, MMORPG or otherwise, were to be made for Naruto, which clans would you most like to be able to play as, and which time period would you find most preferable for the setting? For me it's:

Hyuga: Can see bounty heads and mission objectives through walls, trees, and obstacles
Akimichi: Classic tank. Even wear heavy armor in canon.
Inu: Beastmaster. Can track mission objectives through a scent pathways, similar to how Majora's Mask's Pig Mask worked.
Nara: Apportion damage in a similar manner to the Calculator class in Final Fantasy Tactics.
Aburame: The only clan capable of creating clones, for the purpose of recon and support within combat, through the the use of their insects.

Preferred setting would be in Part I. Justifies the existence of various factions while allowing missions to be obtained from, as well as interactions with, various canonical characters.

Interesting. You're not the first person I've heard respond well to the Guren Arc; others thought that was a canon arc. I'm not sure if that speaks more to the style of the writing matching Kishi's or if perhaps there where more significant plot elements blended into the filler, making it to harder to consider it filler. It's difficult for me to say since I've only watched that Arc once on Toonami.

Anyway, to answer my question. I followed the English Dub on Cartoon Network, watching the Original at some time during (can't remember the specifics). I switched to the Manga right when Kakashi sneak-Chidori'd Kakuzu.

I was taken back by the violence and censorship: "Kakashi" getting stabbed with kunai and shuriken, Kakashi's bloody & missing arm Sasuke Genjutsu (watching live reactions, it appears the censoring makes Sakura's fainting less justified), "Kakashi" leaving body parts when chopped up, Gato getting beheaded, Orochimaru's hidden lab filled with corpses, etc.

I was also surprised with how the Anime integrated the Rookies into various scenes (e.g., Ino and Shikamaru not being in Chapter 1) they weren't in in the Manga, though less impressed with slightly earlier cameos of other characters.

I remember wanting to see how the Manga handled certain aspects of fights art wise. For example, how speed was depicted in Sasuke vs Temari, which wasn't because it was filler.

Perhaps oddest was the difference between Chidori/Raikiri from the Anime to the Manga, turning an aura of lighting covering the hand to a ball of lightning held in hand. Not sure why they changed it. Animation issues? Censorship from impaling Haku, Gaara, etc?

That's fairly debatable, actually. They are certainly the norm in their dwellings, much like the Venetian ghetto's norm was being Jewish, but that doesn't mean they are by and large the norm for the whole population.

We see plenty of shopkeepers, peasants, clerks and officials, normal people doing normal jobs. The rulers are normal people too, which I presume is something partially because that's what the people accept, one of their own being the overlord. You have the entire Wave country apparently without ninja, enough that Gato's yakuza thugs and four chakra users at his hands were able to terrorise them.

I actually don't. I routinely get BTFO by people who can remember specific scenes better than I can.

As far as I know, the Villages work for the Daimyo, but they're given a lot of freedom. We see the Fire Daimyo having a say in who the Hokage is after Tsunade gets put down, although it seemed largely ceremonial, since he was prepared to just go with whoever the ninja recommend.

It's also shown that the Daimyo's aren't dependant on their Village for work, however, as the Wind Daimyo wrecked Suna's economy by hiring outside help - whether other Villages or the Akatsuki - above Sunagakure.

It's likely sorted on a Village-by-Village basis. Konoha seems to have a decent relationship with the Daimyo and his household, whereas Sunagakure's relationship with their Daimyo would still be relatively strained.

Konohagakure showed the world that a cohesive conglomeration of shinobi working together was both possible and feasible.
