Basically it's years and years later, everyone has kids that look the same as they did when they were kids who even have the same Digimon partners, and everyone is paired up not even randomly but with nondescript literally whos, with just one or two expectations.

Obviously it's a show even more for kids than shonen, so it's very much irrelevant, but there was a minor thread of the group protagonist and one of the girls of the group. It even had the Digimon Movie focus on it a bit.

Then near the end of the series she sort of ends up with the edgy asshole of the group, and the protagonist accepts it. Agumon even comments on it, and says "You've really grown up, Tai".

For some people this is a huge betrayal, because letting go of an old crush you had at 10 that went nowhere at age 17 can't just happen like that, hence the comparison of shipperfags.

Bonus points: with each of the group having a virtue associated with them, some people went out of their way to claim a deeper meaning and each member of the group, because of this one thing, failing their assigned virtue.

Tai, the protag had the crest of bravery, but never managed to talk to the girl he liked (he has, but overlooking that is kind of important for the rest to make sense).

Matt(?), the edgy asshole had the crest of friendship and went off on his own from time to time, and stole his best friend's pseudo-gf.

But Kishi doesn't think of it in those terms.
