Where P3 at least had realistic characters with messy personal issues, P4 had really soap opera characters and character dilemmas. If P5 goes down that route it'll be even harder to take seriously; the fact that the antagonist in Daybreakers was exactly like an anime character really makes me worry about whether or not P5 will handle it's main character's personal issues with a modicum of maturity or not.

I wouldn't say P4 dumbed things down as much as they failed with their mission to make social links more substantial by cramming everyone's character development into them. The way it was done in P4, they inadvertently made it so everyone was 100% dependent on P4MC to solve their problems for them, plus everyone's character growth suddenly became something totally optional that could not be referenced outside of the social link. So you ended up with scenes like that Yosuke scene from DAN you're referencing, where he acts like he can just shrug off his shadow and all his problems because Yu spent a few afternoons with him.

The characters had their arc in their dungeons and the scenes after it. The links themselves just went more in-depth on their progress. No one was a fundamentally different person from the link alone. Naoto accepts herself in her dungeon, her link just goes into what that means. Kanji becomes okay with admitting he wanted to be accepted for who he was when he was rescued and his link just goes into his attempts to be more open.

There are definitely problems with this method, but there were problems with the P3 method as well, where characters who didn't have story prominence often got their development shoehorned in and essentially never gets brought up again.

Nana Mizuki (Ann Takamaki)

by her looks you may think that she’s gorgeous, fashionable and girlish..etc. but she’s totally different on the inside. she’s really a pure, nice girl. and she’s very thoughtful for her friends. her heart is very strong and she has a sense of justice. although she looks very sexy, what i think is that she’s the type of girl who radiates her charm in a healthy way. even people of the same sex would be attracted by her. i really had fun doing her lines. the part when she’s in her swimwear and the guys gets shy is esp. fun.

Sugita Tomokazu (Yusuke Kitagawa)

he looks pale and weak but he’s actually pretty tall, he’s the tallest among all the main character. the more you get to know him, the more you would change your impressions on him. yusuke has a very strong persistence regarding his way of life, so it gets more and more painful for him, that’s what i think while reading his lines. like he’s just trying his best to live his life. his charm is probably that you’re able to see many different faces of him. please look forward to see his parts in the game.

well best case scenario in lieu of dialogue or internal monologue you use visuals, either literal or symbolic, to show what a character is thinking and feeling. but that requires kinda building the visual language of your work around those tools and that's something persona couldn't elegantly do without really restructuring itself at a core level
