Hilariously Bad Pretenders Edition

Previous Pantoman >>153658410

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Tien Chi and Asphodel, I knew you were going to attack me at the same time. That's why I calculated which one of you had more forces, and deployed fort defence accordingly.

Did you really think you were going to break my second fort right away, China? Now it has 0 defence. Enough for you to try to breach. But you already know what's going to wait inside, don't you? Your overconfidence will be the reason of your demise.

I warned you about games without summod, but you didn't listen. Now it's time to reap what you sow.

Right, China?

Right?

Did you bring the gems, China?

Did you bring those gems that would've saved you?

Where are the gems, China?

Huh?

Where are those fucking gems, China?

I honestly forgot if China really brought those gems. I gotta look up the last turn.

Hey guys I'm away from my pc visiting my parents, thought I'd be able to take my turn tonight on their computer before bed but I'm not able to get the mod to work. I downloaded worthy heroes 5.5 (not sure what the NN is but I can't find that version of the mod) and I'm getting this error. Checked the game page on llamaserver and the mod download is no longer there. Neither is the map (do I need the map file as well?). If I can't get it to work I'm going to need an extension of a few hours but I'm hoping it won't come to that.

>>

Fly to an enemy cap then assassinate stuff there from turn two or so. Makes it much harder for the other player to send out expansion parties
>>
>>153817278
Hahaha. It seems like the sort of thing I'd love to do, though in a large game I'm only really screwing one player at a time, and potentially making more than one enemy by doing it.
>>
>>153817370
Possibly.

Also worth noting that asshole batman can basically solo a nation if run with high dom score, since he can literally dom kill them if they don't have an awake pretender by sitting there (usually aided by the rapid arrival of sneaky flying priests, which Xibalba has access to)
>>
>>153817669
Too bad getting a capital in the first 10 turns is never a good idea unless you're a diplomonster.

Oh wait this is /domg/ meaning everyone will expect someone else to handle the huge early threat, carry on.
>>
>>153817669
Aha. I didn't think about that. Sadly, I don't think I get flying sneaky priests as EA Mictlan. But it's a devilish idea for an EA Xibalba game, thank you!

>>153810654
Imprisoned Statue of the Bloody Mother D4N9B9 with Dom8 O3S3H2G2M2D2 sound acceptable, or?

>Border with Ermor

Three possibilities.

>You ignore Ermor.
Ermor either completely slaps your shit in with a million morale-less freespawn and a tri-quadbless if it's early game. If it's midgame, they cast globals and fuck the entire world up. You lose either way.

>You fight Ermor and win
Congratulations, you may have just won yourself a 0 income 0 population dead province. Your troops will starve and get diseased if you stay here any longer. You can not push any deeper into Ermorian territory, unless you have supply items or nature mages at the ready. If you do manage to push deeper, you are likely to find one or more castles, which you can not siege because of the lack of supplies. If you actually manage to break the gate, skeleton spam ensures that you can not capture the fortress. Even if you do, you gain nothing. No resources, no income. A neighbour notices your momentary weakness and stabs you in the back. You lose.

>You pool up gems to cast Dispell
The person pooling the gems keeps them, potentially spending them on shit to kill you with. You can not get the gems back by any means. Even if you do manage to dispell a cancer global, Ermor can just put it up again in a few turns. Outside of the very late game, you can not stop this, you can not counter this. You lose.

Why is this cancer nation in the game again? Just rework it completely or remove it. There has not been a single game in /domg/ history where someone who had a border with Ermor during the first year and fought the cancer that ended up winning.
>>
>>153818886
You forgot the most common.

>Ermor sucks shit and doesn't know what he is doing and ends up defeating himself. You could take his cap for some free gems but why bother. There is a noticeable improvement in his game when he goes AI.
>>
>>153818886
>>153819172

Ermor is the /b/ of Dominions.
>>
>>153818886
>There has not been a single game in /domg/ history where someone who had a border with Ermor during the first year and fought the cancer that ended up winning.
Wasn't there that one Nazca that took out Ermor early and then snowballed off the extra D gems?
>>
>>153787449

It ended with me and TC owning half the world each, we decided that the battle between T3 Yomi and O3 TC would have been a massive fucking drag so one of us should just take the win. I do not remember how we decided who (might have been a dice roll, fuck if I know was ages ago) but in the end it was me.

I was lucky really, Marverni and Arco(?) started next to me with T3, so they got fucked over by Chaos Power 3 oni en masse, since I had a very good expansion and it gave me the gold to drown them in oni. The ~50 banefire spammers of which 20 Dai Oni took care of the mid-late game.
>>
Is there any spell, item, trait, unit, etc that can bring population back to a 0 pop province? If not, do any of the popular mods offer options for this? Maybe a high level spell or a mechanic that allows provinces with positive growth and a population near the upper limit to have an immigration option or just passive natural spillover of people.
>>
>>153793539
>not giving your asshole batman a shield, armor or a decent weapon before parking him on a cap
Shit nigga what are you doing
>>
>>153818886
There are a few nations which benefit from gibbing Ermor early and getting that death income.
>>
>>153819602
As the Ermor in that game, it was more Nazca beat me after around 20 or so turns of fighting. If anyone else in the game was competent (or Jotun hadn't AI'd) they could have won.

Ironically, I told Nazca that he should wait for there to be no other people who could use the weakened state he would be in to backstab before attacking me. Sadly, that condition was apparently realized on turn1.
>>
>>153820070
What build did Nazca have?

What troops/mages did he use. I want to get into Nazca but I can't think of good skeleton removal strats for them.
>>
>>153820070
Yeah, just checked the old TRN file, was Late Winter of year 5 when I was effectively beaten, so around turn 60 or so actually.

Jotun easily could have won with demon spam had he not gone AI for literally 0 reason.
>>
Do people ever domkill Ermor?
>>
For EA Mictlan, should I use this pretender?
>>
>>153820172
He spammed Supaya, at a rate I couldn't match. Shinu and C'tis helped as well, but were utter morons that were easily slapped down. Took time and effort, and distracted my forces though.

>>
>>153820604
I worry about the lack of income here. But I guess who the fuck needs income if you have triple-bless jaguars?
>>
>>153820604
Actually, because Mictlan can control its dom-spread much better than most, you usually run Drain 3 on the tribless build (yes, really) and then move mages out of your cap if you are going to leave them researching. You then research away from the core-dom that keeps you alive. This lets you take some luck scales, to get good events out of your shitty-income cap, since it and the surrounding areas are getting extra events from your Turmoil 3 anyways.

I would definitely NOT recommend this to a newer player, though, because if you don't manage your blood saccing, you can get dom-killed or just spread the drain-cancer across your land.
>>
>>153820281
B9W9?

Weird bless for supayas...
>>
>>153820737
I'm a newer player (about 6 multiplayer games played, 3 won). But yeah, I was thinking about those delicious free points. I guess it's a roulette with who spawns close to me, and how focused they are on spreading their dominion.

If it's a game for newer players, though, perhaps this strategy could be even more potent?
>>
>>153820840
3 wins moves you out of the newb category as far as /domg/ goes. Like, really far out of it.

Mictlan is actually very good at spreading its dom or killing enemy dom given that it gets triple temple checks with jade knives, so you actually have no problem getting dom killed IF you already have the daggers and slaves ready and turn them off and on as needed.

This was in the olden days where you had to take like 2 dom to even get quadbless. Your candles spread much faster these days with builds like >>153820971
>>
>>153821372
It's a bit slim on the games, but the winrate is rather high (50% is higher than almost any player can boast sans a very limited amount).

So yes, if Domg had a ranking system, you'd be near the very top.
>>
>>153822181
Two of my three wins were disciple games paired with a more experienced teammate. I will say that the other teams were structured in much the same fashion, but maybe disciple games don't count for as much?
>>
If my pretender wins the battle by turning into a dragon, does he recover his lost items from the shapeshifting once the battle is over? Or is it random?
>>
>>153822262
I generally count disciple games in their own separate category desu. For instance, atm I have a 66% winrate in FFA, and a 0% winrate in Disciples.
>>
>>153822181
Also, the main issue is I have very little experience playing with or against certain nations because of my limited playtime thus far. But damn, this game is fun. I love complexity and depth and I just want to lose myself in it more and more.

Thanks for everyone in the thread (and in prior threads) helping me with my silly questions.

In a perfect world there would be no need for a single nation to dedicate all its war efforts towards removing Ermor. The burden would be split among all its neighbors, and the one who lost most would get the capital.

We do not live in a perfect world.

And I also have some dead gems from endlessly trading provinces with Ermor. I'm willing to trade them for gold which I unsurprisingly lack.
>>
>>153823556
The most cancerous Ermor build is the one actually playing to win.

In vanilla, I vouch for tribless because you have the gems to trade the slower start for a stronger midgame. In summod, I'd say an awake dom9 monobless or semi-rainbow expander is best because you want the earlygame to fend off the inevitable rush (or better yet to kill someone else off early).
>>
is there a way to design an event to repopulate Ermor's provinces?

like we could have an hidden super stealthy immortal dummy unit appear as the province has been in ermor's dominion and property for a certain amount of time, then when the province is no longer Ermor's we could start an event chain that repopulates it by few thousands and then remove the dummy.
>>
>>153823662
Summod adds deadlands sites that provide death income to Ermor provinces so it clearly is possible to identify Ermor provinces. I'm not in touch with event modding but I suppose it'd also be possible to identify such sites once Ermor is gone and cause them to generate repopulation events.
>>
>>153823662
Looked into it. It requires an immense amount of work
>>
>>153823752
>>153823785
so we could use deadland as a trigger. if we could detect the fact there is no longer ermor's dominions and proeprty there then it could be easy.
>>

>>
>>153823662
Repopulating provinces isn't in the spirit of the game. The world is supposed to be more and more fucked as the war goes on. Sometimes with only a handful of pop surviving in the end.
>>
>>153823956
You can, but it needs to be set for Rare(%) or else it triggers right away (and even then, it can trigger on the turn after they lose the province)

>>

I mean, kinda-sorta. Personally I like casting Celestial Rainbow and Fata Morgana and Well of Mistery and Gift of Health and Gift of Nature's "The Mustard Tastes Better" Bounty
>>
>>153824048
There's already an Air spell that consumes all corpses in a province.

Make a nature spell that starts the re-population on an area with no unburried corpses and 0 population.
>>
>>153824224
And then someone wishes for a few Armageddons to take you down a notch.

>>153824321
Or don't. The timeframe of the game is too short. You can't repopulate a dead world in months.
>>
>>153824048
I think populations acting as they see fit is in the spirit of the game since controlling population is outside the scope of the game. Just like freethinkers can leave in search of a more pluralistic government, I don't think it's unreasonable for people to return to Eldergate and surrounding territories with all the aqueducts and markets and palaces and such like presumably still intact. Especially if you justify the existence of such refugees by having emigration events in Ermor dominion provinces that still have population left.
>>

Presumably the undead haven't actively destroyed aqueducts, baths, roads, markets, great public buildings, walls or other things that made life in the Eldergate (supposing it's like Rome) great before Thaumaturgs fucked up so they've just been neglected for some years. Even after Ermor's cancer dominion has disappeared, it'll take a while for nature to fully recover, but crops could probably already grow next season and the city (supposing it's like Rome) is a lot more liveable than alternatives in many other ways (running water, sewer system and so on).

Besides, a lot of people must have fled the devastation so they'd be returning to their homes.
>>
>>153827378

I played Dominions 4 for about 8 hours and I didn't understand it.

I had a giant rock as my pretender as the Atlanteans. All I did all game was build armies of Deep Ones, research a few spells, and moved the armies around as the AI fucked up on the map so I could conquer neutral territories and enemy territories. And that was really boring.

I also tried playing as the Ancient Chinese civilization and sort of got a handle on producing different types of gems and making some low-level magic items, but I had no idea whether it was effective or not.

I keep hearing that this game is deep and complex, but where?
>>
>>153827663
The AI is... well, "special", it can barely use magic. Hence MP being the main aspect, because then you're playing against people whom will use the full bredth of spells/items/summons to try to kill you.
>>
>>153827540
Oh no you don't, I saw that.
>>
>>153827663
You just suck a lot. Like in any other field you have to be at the very least slightly competent to enjoy the process.
Basically you are just casual.
>>
>>153827757
Are spells just randomly researched or something?
>>
>>153827663
The AI is garbage and can be beaten by just throwing more units at it with maybe some basic mage support. Multiplayer is where the complexity comes in since just using more units won't work past the early game.
>>
>>153827928
Actually I've heard a few players say on higher levels the AI is actually really tough to beat. The thing is it doesn't use the tactics that players use, they just throw endless doomstacks at you until they grind you down. So learning to beat the AI doesn't teach you things that will be useful against other players.
>>
>>153827484
And anyway, even if Eldergate is in ruins and isn't ready to become the world's greatest city again any time soon, the region isn't naturally inhospitable (indeed, there's a reason why big historical cities have popped up where they have) and once cancer dominion is gone, people would want to stake out a claim to this desirable piece of land.
>>
>>153827663
>I keep hearing that this game is deep and complex, but where?
Multiplayer.

As you've seen, the AI does not provide a large challenge. Playing against people requires you to actually make use of the large magic tree, and gives you useful feedback on whether or not what you were doing was effective.

>>153827776
Could easily be someone trying to stir up trouble. Seems a little too convenient to me.

Also for anyone who missed the deleted post, it had the name "Latus 3 Badmin" and said this
>Just let it go, one stale isn't too much, I for one vote for not rolling back, fuck that.

>>153827919
You can distribute research between different schools of magic. At each new level in a school you get a bunch of new spells. One of the buttons on the right should have a menu for it, and you can click on the school names to look at a full list of spells for that school.
>>
>>153827663
The magic and item system. Deciding which spells/items you need, when you need them, where you need them, how best to use them, how best to gather the resources to use them, how best to defend against the counters for them, etc, etc.

You were literally playing as an AI, against the AI, doing nothing more than just hurling giant doomstacks around. I bet you didn't even reposition your troops or set up formations or orders.

As a comparison, imagine playing a standard skill-based RPG, setting the difficulty to 'very easy', cranking up the enemy HP (And nothing else), and then playing through the entire thing using nothing but the basic autoattack option. That's what you did. The AI is terrible at the game unless you give it a whole ton of breathing room, the general recommendation is to get a working knowledge of how gameplay is supposed to go and then jumping into MP as soon as possible.

For reference, those mages you can recruit are literally the most important thing, to the point where 95% of nations never recruit an actual commander in the entire game, and the other 5% recruit maybe 3 or 4, tops.
>>
>>153828073
>>153827928
>>153827757
How is diplomacy handled in Multiplayer?
>>
>>153828045
They're wrong, the AI's doomstacks are just chaffworks, decent mage support will wreck them every time.
>>
>>153828045
A small group of mages can generally beat unlimited doomstacks, but that is... More or less accurate, if you're a newbie. Being able to kill a team of impossible AIs on your own is admirable, and at least a little difficult, but it won't teach you anything or be nearly as fun as an MP game is.
>>
>>153827919
It's not that the AI doesn't research spells, it's that Dominions spells are often very situational and need careful setting up to really wreck the enemy. The AI basically casts spells at random, so if it pulls off a combo it is entirely by accident.

For example, the spell Foul Vapours deals a little Poison damage to half the creatures on the battlefield every turn. A basic tactic is to summon lots of poison resistant creatures and then cast the spell to slowly kill the enemy as the fight progresses. You can also mix in Rigor Mortis which slowly paralyzes every unit on the battlefield. However the AI can't put together these kinds of complex plans, so it just throws mixed hordes of monsters at you with mages casting random spells.

Against other players it becomes a game of cat and mouse as you try to exploit their weaknesses and counter their plans before the enemy counters yours.
>>
>>153828045
Really tough to beat is an exaggeration. It just gets a lot of free income so instead of throwing small armies of random garbage at you, it throws big armies of random garbage at you. It does make things harder especially since it tends to attack rather randomly so you can't always just intercept its stacks, but if you play in a focused way and make good use of magic it's still easy to beat. When you hit your basic research goals, an army of 50 units supported by 10 mages that are used well, is better than an army of 100 units not supported by mages at all. So it makes the AI more dangerous early on, but doesn't help them much in the mid- and late-game.

>>153828138
The old-fashioned way. Just personal arrangements through ingame messages and/or Steam chat. Diplomacy isn't binding and you can never fully trust anyone, so games typically have a lot of backstabbing.
>>
>>153828079
>I bet you didn't even reposition your troops or set up formations or orders.
I did play around with formations and orders but I had no idea what was effective against what and was just experimenting with how different things worked.
>>
>>153828045
impossible AI is like wrestling with 500 kittens.

you punch 50 awway from you and 350 will swarm over your legs... but they are still fucking kittens and will go away with a kick. You aren't even scared, just inconvenienced for having lost one fort.
once you unlock your chainsaw ( = you have more than one good army with mage support), kittens are going to die without a chance.
>>
>>153828138
People talk to each other somewhere (here, via messages ingame, on steam, etc) and can make agreements about what to do ingame or share information.

None of it is enforced by ingame rules, but most communities consider direct trades (X gems/gold/items for Y gems/gold/items) binding and will have the admin intervene if you don't follow through with your side.

Anything which isn't a trade is fair game for you to break, at least around here.
>>
>>153828138
Here on /domg/ the unwritten rule is that trades are binding, meaning you can't propose a gem/item trade(or accept one) and not keep your end of the bargain. If the other player proves that you didn't (by uploading his turns) you'll either get ganked by everyone in the game or even set AI by the admin.

However everything else concerning alliances, threats, false promises of support have free reign. Backstabbing is the norm. As is pretending to be weak and asking everyone else to gang up on the only nation who can provide a threat to you later.

>'Help, my neighbor is trying to take my stuff, help me take their stuff instead and you can get half of it'
>'Hey, if you bring some armies around over there, we can kill both these chumps and take their stuff while they fight'
>Meanwhile the cancer nations sit unmolested and spawn unlimited skeletons as everyone capable of fighting them backstabs each other.

Cloak and Dagger bullshit diplomacy is not only expected but actively encouraged. Alliances are transitory and fragile, because at the end of the game there can only be one Pantokrator, and so the entire world is your enemy. Oh, there will be nations working together, perhaps even forming a close bond, but that will only make the inevitable betrayal that much sweeter, as they both brandish the knife behind the other's back. It's all about the presentation of threat and the promise of remuneration, really. Seem less dangerous than you are, but not so safe that people feel like they could get away with attacking you. Make reasonable offers, and expect reasonable offers in return, but never let your guard down.

Trades are always binding, though. ALWAYS. In every game, in pretty much every community, trades are binding.

I'm not thinking of ability to repopulate provinces at will but Ermor (perhaps just the capital) getting repopulated to a thematically sound degree once they are defeated through events (let's say Eldergate was home to 500k people before the cataclysm: would it be unreasonable if 30k of those people returned within a year or two of Ermor's defeat?). Populations already move around in events for various reasons, thematically this wouldn't be anything new.

>How the fuck do you know what undead rule is like lmao.
The skeletons are mindless so they don't just organize a massive deconstruction project unless a necromancer commands them to. In general, they wouldn't have a reason to destroy the city or its surrounding infrastructure, there's no mention of any deliberate acts of demolition and indeed, the fortifications of Ermor capital are still in place complete with supply storage and and such like. The faction description merely says every living thing in the dominion will wither and die, that's it. No mention of crumbling aqueducts or collapsing amphitheatres.

Skellies still use forts, labs and temples. It makes sense that they'd take materials from shit they don't need like aquaducts in order to build the shit they do need, rather than going through the effort of mining new materials. In addition, making the land unliveable would be very much in the undead's advantage, so it makes a lot of sense that they'd just wreck everything they don't need.

All of which is irrelentant since there's no evidence either way in the game or the lore, and making up some imaginary scenario to support your point is entirely meaningless.

Besides, why not use the existing walls and labs and temples of Eldergate to begin with? There's no need to dismantle the city to build something new from scratch. If I was a death god, I'd rather have not-Pantheon rededicated for me alone rather than some shitty ordinary temple skeletons have built, much in the same way Pantheon was used as a Church during the Middle-Ages.
>>
What if Ermor couldn't build forts/temples/labs with cash but had to use death gems?
>>
>>153831337
Because that's not how Dominions works.

When you conquer an enemy temple, the first thing that always happens is you raze it to the ground, because it's dedicated to an enemy pretender and you can't just rededicate it.

Stop trying to overrule gameplay mechanics with your own made-up lore.
>>
>>153831425

>>
>>153831447
There's many capital sites featuring temples that must have existed long before the ascension wars and the new pretender didn't demand their destruction. Ancient temples and other discovered sites aren't destroyed either. Pretenders clearly are happy with old temples being present as long as they weren't constructed for one of their present enemies.
>>
>>153831570
That's fucking hilarious but could be solved by an event that remakes it for them.

There must have been hundreds of years between EA and MA with Pantokrator, EA pretender (whether or not he was thrown to Tartarus or ascended) is long gone.

Anyhow, suppose the skeletons take down the temples of Eldergate. There's certainly enough building materials for a temple to the new pretender and then some, they don't need to go around tearing down the rest of the city so it's only reasonable to assume it isn't quite in ruins yet when the god of Ashen Empire is defeated.
>>
>>153832712
A city occupied by a hostile force that has zero reason to maintain most of its infrastructure (and in fact has a good reason to make it unuseable to living things) isn't going to stay functional for hundreds of years.

Again, stop trying to make up your own lore just so you can use it to second-guess simple gameplay mechanics.

They have access to ONLY AIR MAGIC until they reach like level 7 or 8 or something in conjuration when they can maybe branch out if they somehow can find D or S gems to summon their overpriced national summons, half of which have CHAOS POWER (on a nation that really does not want turmoil)

There is literally NOTHING good about that shit nation. ANYONE with blood access can summon better flying armies that don't have a shitton of fatigue to boot. The fact that half of Caelum's summons are DEMONS TOO, and thus have the same flaws as the blood summons, just adds insult to injury

Dominions actually was made for Linux originally (of course, Linux software is quite inherently portable so it's more like multiplatform, Dominions 1 and 2 were even distributed for some other Unix-like operating systems like Solaris as well as non-x86 Linux architectures, but I'm pretty sure the devs always used Linux). It's apparent from old screenshots (some 90s window manager) but also if you look at audio options support (it supports pretty much all audio systems that have appeared over the two and a half decades) or other such details.

It depends.

In a disciple game, deathbasketing teammates is perfectly acceptable, and deathbasketing enemies is Crix.

In a free-for-all, it's generally better to fight to your last resource, but throwing what's left at enemies of enemies is fine.
>>
>>153844637
There aren't really any rules against it, but a lot of people frown on such things since it can be seen as kingmaking.

Though usually it's not such a big deal imo. Unless they're really shit, someone losing a war will use up their gems and gold in order to turn the tide. Someone who loses the game and still has enough gems left that gifting them makes a significant difference either doesn't know what they're doing or is fucking up the balance on purpose.

>>
>>153844637
Generally speaking, I think it's bad form because I would rather expect players to exhaust all their resources fighting until the end (even if that means converting gems to fire such that you can alchemize them for gold to fuel your war machine).

Hower, if you did truly commit yourself to the war and what you're sending really are the remaining scraps (sometimes you lack the foresight to see you're going to lose quickly or your mages are busy fighting instead of spending gems on inefficient stuff so it can be a good amount), I don't have a problem with it. In addition, I think it's reasonable to pay a more powerful player to assist you against a common more powerful foe (they can use the resources more effectively) so in principle I'm not opposed to this line of thinking: "I'm down to my capital so you'll be able to use the resources a lot more efficiently and perhaps lift the siege with those resources and let me live for a couple of turns longer than I otherwise would have. However, while this move would enable me to stay in the game a couple of turns longer so it's the right move, I'm never going to have any impact so I'll just go AI."

TLDR: Not committing yourself seriously and pussying out at the first setback before you've had even a chance to spend your resources if bad form and so is sending your stuff purely out of spite. Sending your last scraps or buying assistance (even if you simultaneously go AI) are all right in my book.

Suppose you use SDL for most of your platform-dependent stuff.
>>
>>153845871
>Original statement is licux is inherently portable
>Current statement is SDL is portable

WOW A LIBRARY MADE TO BE PORTABLE IS PORTABLE
>>
>>153846030
In Linux game development, regardless of if your intent is to create multiplatform software or not, you end up using libraries like SDL, OpenGL, if you program it in C and target GCC compiler then you're in luck because GCC is available to virtually every platform etc.

If you wrote the game in Assembly, it wouldn't be portable because system calls vary from different operating systems (although I suppose the ones included in POSIX standard would be applicable to other Unix-like systems). If you wrote the game with graphics produced with Xlib, then it obviously wouldn't translate to Windows or OS X because they don't use X display server. BUT NOBODY DOES THAT. The way you'd develop a game for Linux if you were targeting only Linux almost certainly involves those multiplatform libraries and APIs and tools that are available for all modern operating systems. Ergo, games developed for Linux are highly portable by default. This is in stark contrast to Windows game development for example in which case the most natural tools to use would be, say, DirectX/D3D, and they aren't available to any other system.
>>
>>153846956
>C IS MORE PORTABLE THAN ASSEMBLY!!!

Just fucking stop. The language being portable has nothing to do with licux. The goal post has moved all the way to China by now. This is the last (you) a first grade CS college junior is getting from me.

learn to expand well with your nation of choice, the one you like more, ( while also building forts and after a bit start perma-recruiting mages), possibly ask for suggestions on pretender design in this thread.

In my opinion you are 40 minutes of practice away from being ready to play your first Play by email game. and honestly since it takes 1-2 days for a PBEM game to start, you might as well join now and figure out the nation later.The pretender design is the only mistake you can make today that you will carry on your shoulders the entire game;

>>
>>153866863

MA C'tis are generally solid mid-tier. Phenomenal defensively, not so hot on the offence.

It's a decent choice. Their expansion's kinda dodgy though, so you'll want to practice that single player until you can get ~12 provinces by Early Spring Year 2.
>>
>>153866863
both good and with strong, yet obvious and simple to use magic.

MA ctis is a bit tricky to expand with, there are good arguments for taking an awake god with them to expand, or an imprisoned god with a good bless to expand. But the best blesses(N9 oe E9) leave little space for taking paths Ctis doesn't have with your god, which could be useful later into the game.
for sure you want big money scales.
perhaps someone who knows how to play them can suggest you the better choice.

Swamp Guard are 18 prot and Enc8. They actually do pretty damn well with E9. Works nice for your sacred communion slaves as well.

You don't need a CD-key if you bought it on Steam.

The protection from E9 is only a little bit of natural protection and doesn't stack well with armor protection.

MA C'tis sacreds aren't good enough to get a major bless anyway. Maybe if the big Sobeks weren't restricted to 1 per turn.

Would personally recommend an imprisoned E4D4 Devourer of Souls.

Dom9, Order 3, Prod 1, Heat 3, Growth 3, Luck 1, Magic 3.

Gets you big money, awesome research, and the high dom score ensures you're not going to be pressed by neighbours with cold scales.

Cold scales will kill you stone dead. Lizards can't fight in the cold at all, and your casters will knock themselves out ridiculously fast.

Doesn't get you much in the way of variety beyond (maybe) the ability to break into Earth later in the game, but it does provide you a decent minor for Communioning up Lizard Shamen.

One thing to note with expansion also, once you hit Enchantment 1, you can use Empoisoners to spam Animate Skeleton, which will take out indie commanders fairly reliably. At Magic 3 you should hit that pretty quick, and while it might only get you two or three provinces in the first year, that's not nothing when added to standard troop expansion, given MA C'tis's expansion issues.
>>
>>153869312
>Moggersposting
>>
>>153869312
I'd sooner get an awake E6 Erf Snek.

It's a boring choice perhaps, but it also gives you Earth access, it helps you expand a lot faster, and it leaves plenty of room for good scales.
>>
>>153869663

'S fair enough. I've never been a fan of awake expanders myself. Particularly since any cold-blooded nation really wants high dom strength to push it's temp scales.
>>
>>153869956
You should always take dominion 9 or 10 on an awake pretender for awe, which would more than negate that issue.
>>
>>153870124
Just usually, E pretenders like Snek and Cyclops don't need awe.
>>
>>153869956
Having an awake pretender is better for pushing scales early on than having high Dom, since you get 3 extra temple checks out of it, 1 with 100% chance regardless of Dom strength.

>>153870124
E6 Snek can expand fine without Awe. Just stay away from stuff like undead provinces.
>>
>>153870124

Kinda screws over the plenty of room for scales thing, though. An awake Dom9 E6 snake only has points for two positive scales. Three if you drop to E5.
>>
>>153870316
>E6
Why E6 and not E5? Is maybe getting EBDW worth the extra scale?
>>
>>153870460
E6 gives 1 more point of reinvig and +1 snek prot. Not incredibly important, but nice to have. E5 is fine, too.
>>
>>153870460
It also gives an extra point of defense for the snek and an extra point of reinvig for the bless.

It's not essential and if you need more points there's no real harm in going with E5, but it's still nice to have.
>>
>>153870659
>extra point of defense
protection*
>>
>>153868810
Not necessarily, many nations already have unique holy spell schools anyway. They could be rare and only used for empowering, using higher level spells on a lower level priest, or extra powerful holy spells that require gems.
>>
>>153836518
QUADBLESS SUPAYAS
>>
>>153870850
Maybe they could also be used to empower your pretender in any magic path by paying whatever the cost would be in magic gems but in holy gems instead, BUT empowerment done in this way also retroactively improves your bless. Of course holy gems would have to be very rare indeed to prevent this from being overpowered.
>>
>>153868474
>>153868474
I'm not sure if that makes sense. It seems like magic is something in the world and natural (so that you can just kick over a rock and find an earth gem), while holiness is something that stems only from the various pretenders, and indirectly from belief in them or association with them.
>>
>>153860814
Ayup.
Once you get a thousand or more, most instakill spells won't actually kill you.
>>
>>153871781
The lore explanation would be simple really, previous pantokrators and their prophets leave behind relics that are effectively holy gems (or become them over time), they don't even need to be called holy gems if that wouldn't be thematically appropriate, just some kind of rare and valuable holy resource. Gem is just a term everyone already understands from the magic system in place so it makes it simpler to put forward the idea.

>Dominions 5

>Nations have gunpowder access now
Early age is pike and shot
Middle age is line wars
Late age is full on WW1 trench warfare

>Besides magical research, there is now mundane technology research
Mundane research improves regular troops, giving them new and better weapons, allowing you to use new tactics and improving your cannons, allowing them to fire new rounds.
Only mundane researchers (scientists) and cannon crews can research mundane technology

>Have to choose between recruiting mages and building cannons
Mages are generally more diverse but come online far later
Cannons are good at blasting things, there are many different kinds of cannons, lategame they can even do things like gas attacks

>Underwater nations removed, seas and oceans are now ruled by ships, boats and trading vessels
Naval combat added. Magical sea creatures can still be summoned. Nations like R'lyeh start coastal bound, but may have a lategame ritual to magically or through sheer ingenuity move their capital to the middle of the ocean.

>Trading and migration added
Trading increases the income of provinces. Details unknown yet.
Migration pretty much evens the population of the provinces of the world out a bit, with people migrating from crowded areas to less crowded areas, cities, capitals and provinces being domkilled excluded.

>>
>>153874316

You could just use something to cause unrest and then patrol away the unrest. That causes a fairly controllable amount of corpses.

If you don't mind temperature changes, something like Wolfen Winter creates corpses as well, without being as aggressive as the various disease-based ways to do it.

>>

>gunpowder

>mundane research
Yes, keep normal troops at least kinda useful a bit longer.
>removing UW
No.
>adding ships and fleets
Yes.
>trading and migration
Maybe.

Personally:
>full 3D map
>actual unit movement and fighting on said map
>actual battlefield terrain (the former two remove the division between strategic and tactical view, so this is a natural consequence)
>terrain deformation from spells etc
>different planes that are actual separate areas, like CoE
>abstracted scripting (mage groups with tasks assigned)
>nations reworked to be more unique with more unique spells
>connecting to above, some mechanics added/altered to allow nations native to, for example, wastes to actually thrive in wastes

First 4 are ideas Illwinter already wanted to do for 4 but decided to keep for 5, so those are pretty much confirmed.
>>
An idea I'd love for DaddyDom5 that I proposed about a year ago would be a unit workshop for all nations.

So instead of getting a couple variations of your nation's main units, you'd be given chassis to build off of (IE vanheim would get a human and van chassis). Then you can add your nation's weapon/armor types to the chassis as you see fit. This would solve the problem of some nations having units that are pretty good but stupidly missing helmets, etc. Mundane research would allow units to get better/different weapons and armor over time. So even basic units like mundane human troops should be able to fill some function even into late game.

So this way you could make low-res spearmen in the early game and then redesign them to be more heavily armored/expensive as the game continues.
>>
>>153874068

What is the point of blink? Scripting it is useless because I have no way of knowing where the mage will go with it. Even having it researched is a liability because mages will blink around like idiots after their script ends and get themselves killed.

Note that your constructs are already pierce resistant anyway. Your best bet is marble warriors your non-magical dudes or cast Darkness(you don't have a reliable darkness caster though). That said, you both have access to very similar tricks (E/F magic, high prot troops) that the one with the research lead is likely to be heavily favored.
>>
>>153892978
Ulm can cast Solar Brilliance with a communion once he starts expecting Darkness mind you.

How strong is Vengeful Water if you have a high heat dominion?
>>

Big water elementals have 4 20 damage AP attacks. They'll beat up most thugs, much less regular commanders and mages. They make coastal and swamp provinces borderline inaccessible if you can't give elite units as bodyguards to literally everyone in your armies.

Small water elementals are less amazing, but still pretty damn good for clearing out scouts and many commanders.

That's mainly a problem with the way resources are currently barely important.

If you made gold partly tied to resources there would be reasons to go things other than super-heavy infantry and crossbows.

If you made it so that gold costs increased by 1/5 of resources or something (rounded up to nearest whole number) there'd be good reasons to take lighter troops or weapons. It could be easily justified as having to pay for the equipment.

Alternatively, have levels of experience (higher levels increase stats but also increase price) and require a minimum level of experience to use types of armor. That'd replicate what happens in dominions already, with elite infantry usually getting the heavier armor.

Also in case you didn't know, usually when you cast spells you have to add your spell casting encumbrance. So if you cast a fatigue 20 spell and have spell encumbrance 8, it will cost you 28 fatigue.

However items are different and you dont need to add the encumbrance value for them. 5 fatigue, that's it.

I definitely think they are. Expansion can be done with chariots, and I don't see an important use for them later on which you can't do with regular units/summons.

>>153909376
You can expand very quickly with just chariots.

There is no need to grab popeating sacreds which cost twice as much resources as each chariot.

>>153909980
The main issue is it requiring a ton of gold for relatively little benefit. You almost never need that many temples, and that gold could be invested into mages or troops instead.

There's also a large risk of losing the invested gold. In peacetime, provinces can be lost due to events. When you go to war your enemy is likely to focus raiding on temple provinces, destroying the temple and wasting your gold.

They have 2 atk/square. Even if they're *good* attacks, that's still a problem. Consider that Burning Ones have 4 atk/square, and Vanhere/WoT5E have 6 atk/square.

For their cost and downsides, they'd have to be wielding fire brands or some other kind of AOE1 weapon for me to even consider recruiting them.
>>
>>153909213

If you went for a heavy bless because the starts are fixed and you know you will get your seir (for example) then its always worth recruiting more sacreds.

Otherwise they're not better than chariots when expanding.

what about an AWAKE devourer of souls? or erf snek.

dom 7, order 3, production 1, heat 3, growth 3, misfortune 1 ( getting order 3 luck 1 is just laughable desu), magic 0.

my only doubt is: will he be able to expand with death 4 and earth 5? i don't know, i would have to test it but i have no time.

the trick is that your pretender is 3 walking temples, that's 1200 gold. i think you are getting more out of your dominion effect by having lower maximum dominion but starting with 3 free temples.

i am not sure MA ctis wants magic 3... aren't they supposed to recruit marshmasters which have big research anyway? magic 3 is better left if you only recruit X1 mages.

if i am not mistaken with construction 2 you can ship the devourer of souls into water provinces quite easily.

as for killing indies with assasination i will repeat my opinion i once gave: go for a turn 2 and turn 4 skeleton trinket. you will take at most 2-3 provinces with assasins because it reaaally slow. thrones are too hard because mages, so the best provinces to assasinate are the 30 heavy cav provinces and shit like that.
>>
>>153912990

>go for a turn 2 and turn 4 skeleton trinket
Can't you just go for enchantment 1?

Assuming magic 0 and recruiting only empoisoners you get it on turn 5, then every empoisoner can go out and summon skeletons without an item.
>>
>>153913068

>>153913428

>>
How strong are Earth Sneks for early expansion? I've never used Awake Pretenders before.

(E6 I assume being the cookie cutter magic pick, don't know if Dom9 is common for Awe)

I know there's a couple of Indie judgement rules like not hitting Lizards but how strong can a Snake take solo? Heavy Cavs doable? Or do I need Chaff for that? Are there any spells I can cast to help?
>>
>>153914419
Erf snek an clear out most indies reliably except thrones, heavy cavs, barbarians, and lizards.

Just position the snek as far away from the enemies as possible then script it to hold for a couple of turns.
The differences in indie movement speed will divide their formation, so your snek won't get ganged up by multiple units too soon
>>
>>153914310
>also i am quite short on money for mages for the first 6 turns
Empoisoners are only 90 gold each, so that shouldn't be an issue unless you're dropping all of your gold into expansion parties each turn.

>with a turn 2 trinket you can issue an assasination on 4
Most indie provinces have multiple leaders, though. 4 assassinations issued on turn 6 will probably clear a province at about the same time, with much faster speed for subsequent provinces.

My main worry would be volume of skeletons being insufficient compared to trinkets, since ench 1 only gives you 4 before your mage passes out.

What happens if you twiceborn your pretender and kill him?
>>
>>153917796
>Diplomacy
No. Trade interface and improved messaging features are one thing (for starters, Dominions could move away from PBEM by making direct connect more appealing such that it offers better experience than Llamaserver, and that would open an option for real-time messaging - the expectation of 24h+ turns would remain the same of course), but formal diplomacy mechanics would be unthematic and would be a step towards reducing shrewd negotiations and second-guessing your opponents to "accept alliance y/n".
>>
Late game Dominions feels like a paradox to me. You need vast armies to take forts but if you attack the defender can drop an army-wiping spell on the first turn. What do you do? SCs can't crack forts and die to mage hordes.
>>
>>153919594

Use army to siege. Once the walls are down, send one or two cancer-casting mages in to clear the way. Have them cast and retreat. See what's left and send in what you deem necessary to finish the enemy off and take the fort.
>>
>>153919709

You should have scouts moving about checking what the enemy has anyway. Us a scout to check what the enemy has and plan accordingly. Maybe cast some rituals into the province if you want to weaken it a bit, maybe kill some mages.

Capturing the province and then moving your army there in friendly movement phase the next turn is definitely a thing (my personal favourite is Send Horror -> capping with scout but you can use stealthers, unexpected movement from fliers or teleporting/cloud trapezing thugs or a number of other methods).

However, it's worth remembering that the enemy armies can't be everywhere at once. Endgame is often a combination of extensive raiding and cat an mouse game of trying to catch the enemy army when you have defender's advantage while taking the low-hanging fruit in forts instead of being determined to capture a specific well-defended fort: if your armies are out in the field and theirs just defend thrones, your enemy will just lose in battle of attrition in the long term. And should they leave their forts, that's a possible opportunity to catch the enemy army unprepared or move to capture the fort while there are no defenders with guaranteed defender's advantage inside. Capturing a well-defended fort by brute force, while possible, might not be what you want to do.

For battlefield spells it's also less mobile and doesn't work turn 1 (except communions with a matrix).

Ermor is wonnabe ISIS shitter, has no chances to actualy win the game, but since turn 15 spreading his cancer everywhere.
Mictlan is quadblessed (in MA!) idiot, considering his Scales(lol) BoT killed all of his lands and he can produce like 3 sacreds per turn or 2 sacreds and 1 mage.
Pelagia fighting the whole world by now, because he is agressive retarded newbie, unknown to magesupport, despite having one of the best strategic dispositions (the map itself preferable to UW nations) and considering Ryley AI he could have done good.

Sure.

So there were a few things at play here -

First off, Ashia only scripted one Fog Warriors caster and didn't give him extra gems. I trapezed a dude onto his army with the intention of burning what gems I could, but I mostly expected to just make him summon fewer elementals. As it turns out, I actually blocked his one big battle buff too.

I had scripted 2x Bloodletting and then recasting Fog Warriors in order to remove his and reapply it to my own guys, but that ended up not being really necessary. The bloodletting still did a little bit of damage, I guess, and the fog warriors were reapplied to the units that his evo hit, but it didn't end up mattering very much.

The one mage that he killed was the Ghoul Father mercenary duder (who actually was helping me a lot, since my only astral guys are cap only StR), and he died to a magic duel from an S4 mage, so props on neutralizing that.

I fucking warned you about the bats, man.
>>
His guys fly in storms and have thunder res 5, which basically makes them a perfect unit to deploy against Chimori, but unfortunately for him they never made it past my chaff line. Fog Warriors units v not-fog warriors units meant that my one-off squads of bats actually managed to waste multiple full turns of his flyers, and of course my vine ogres tanked for days.

If I was raining thunderstrikes on his flyers, I would actually have hurt my own guys quite a bit (lightning res v no lightning res, and no good way to apply it to a spread screen of bats), but luckily his high HP trolls and so on drew most of the evo.

Also, my storm demons were set to Fire - Flyers, and since his mages were far forward, a few of them took shots fairly early on in the fight, which was nice.

Well, that was completely decisive. I really made a blunder with Fog Warriors casting.

I took a detour through Calaene provinces because I (correctly, the reinforcements going through my provinces met the bulk of your forces, although I think I was pretty cute having them scripted to retreat such that they'd be able to reinforce if you didn't stop them but escape if they did) knew I couldn't safely reinforce through my own territory but I made a blunder in that I let the mage that was carrying gems for reinforcing mages to cast Fog Warriors and of course that ended up in a disaster with gems being spent in magic phase battle (it felt kinda safe because it was "neutral" territory and I expected your nearby mages to reinforce the siege instead but obviously not). And it should go without saying multiple casters would have been a standard redundancy, but I had exhausted all my resources so I didn't have any gems to spare for that.

Then again, looking at the battle, with my tactics it kinda seemed like a lost cause anyway although it would at least have been more even. The backwards deployment of your troops forced me to deploy fire and water casters near front where they took fire from storm demons (a risk I was aware of, but if I had deployed them closer to the back, who would have killed storm demons?). I also expected your thunder strikers to largely ignore the +5 lightning res birds in favour of sea trolls deployed towards the middle and the back but the exact opposite was the case (I really overestimated the effects of lightning resistance and underestimated the effects of distance during storm in mage targeting). And repeated casts of Fog Warriors (something I simply didn't have resources for myself even if it wasn't for my blunder with choice of caster) fucked my ability to kill stuff with mages over.
>>
>>153932258
>>153928708
A disaster at every level. If I could have scripted with the knowledge of how this iteration of battle turned out, I probably could have made it more even and a better scripter might have won (with quite significant cost to himself) but I felt attacking now was necessary: if I had won, perhaps tables could have been turned with some new players finally joining in, and while having stealthy troops carrying gems is a standard practise, I thought just maybe there was a chance you had overextended and took a battle after having spent a lot of the gems in Black Alps (189) a turn earlier with mages from nearby forts teleporting or flying to reinforce the siege with gems (instead of teleporting to my reinforcement army, that was another reason it felt safe, although it obviously was a stupid move in retrospect).

I'm really sorry for blundering it like this, for everyone in the game (including myself and you for not offering a better challenge) and everyone who has died to Chimori thus far but like you said in an in-game message, I've been the one to provide most opposition thus far and now I'm pretty much beaten as well. Unless Caesidh or someone else pulls a rabbit out of the hat, it seems over (well, to be fair, people have been saying this for last 30 turns and at least I tried to give it a shot).

It takes spells that are usually high priority (most self buffs and many summon spell), changes their spell effect to a useless effect followed by the real cast so that the AI ignores it. This makes the AI prefer evo with air magic, for instance, and TC and Sauro mages prefer call ancestor to the skelly spells.

Personally, I'd want to modify it a bit to remove the elemental summoning spells (since atm their high priority makes mages use them against assassins), but the self buff spells and phantasmal warrior stuff I'd definitely leave in.

>>153939212

Also, I still need cheep items which will protect me from WoG in the Ermorian dominion (Copper Armor, Acron Necklace, Storm Spool, Resist Ring). Can exchange 1 dwarven hammer for 3 such kind of items, or 28 air gems for 4 items of that kind.

So yeah I'm getting eaten alive here. Soon I'll be down to just my throne forts. If anyone's interested in why I was able to get access to 3 in all paths it's thanks to the throne of knowledge which will soon fall into squid hands, err tentacles. If you want to prevent this, or just make Ryleh's life as hard as possible, send us some nature gems to 1-800 OCEANIA to fill the fort to brim with wolves. Every 20 gems means 100 wolves and all donors will remain anonymous. And I'll even send some gifts back, got plenty of left-over items from the business.

Speaking of business my offer to migrate to some land nation and craft items for free for the rest of the game is still up.

>>Raven of the underworld
>INFINITE HP

>2 Hearts + crown of ivy king For +20 reinvigoration and +10% regeneration
Hearts don't stack.

Also your script requires expensive off-paths

If you want to make a phoenix pyre pretender SC, you can do a lot better. Step 1 is picking a pretender with SLOTS in addition to just HP,

Step 2 is picking a pretender with the right self-buff paths (remember - layers of mitigation) so that you don't waste a million design points on magic that isn't otherwise useful.

Step 3 is realizing that your dumbass phoenix pyre pretender is still going to get a shitload of afflictions and become useless when you can just as easily make an SC that just won't be killed by the same stuff that fails to kill a Phoenix Pyre pretender.
>>
>>153943912

>>153944260
Oceania died so fast pelagia literally couldn't have reacted in time. Maybe if he didn't waste a shitton of mage turns and gems crafting worthless items he could have held me off better. I honestly am shocked my army hasn't died to either foul vapors+serpents blessing or mass water ele/living water spam.

Kay then.

Also, can you use Flames from the Sky and other artillery rituals like it on enemies inside forts you're besieging, or do those just hit your own guys?
>>
>>153946093
There's more to being an ally than just sending troops to kill themselves for your sake. Let's be honest, nobody expected one of the weakest nations period to win or even do anything, so I figured I might approach the game from a more memeworthy angle and open up all item paths to everyone. (And do stuff like make the arena worth sending something by giving out artifacts as rewards.)

I'm glad my laziness to Tiamat provinces is hindering you though. I never had interest in acquiring gems beyond having a big enough stock to allow nature only nations to buy fire items and vice-versa.
>>
>>153946926

While it's under siege, it hits your guys. Before it comes under siege it'll hit the inhabitants, so you can use them on the turn you attack, for example.

Shadow Brand.
>>
>>153946443
I have also gone AI. I will not play a game with abusive admins.
>>
>>153948672
Frost Brand is cheapest, and therefore usually the best choice for clearing PD
Fire Brand and Shadow Brand both have AP attacks on the main weapon hit, which makes them more versatile. Shadow Brand costs more and has MRN on its secondary attack, but it hits a wider area and is AN. In Summod, Shadow Brand costs the same amount, but it still uses D gems which are usually more valuable than F gems.

>>153948681
Yes. SP can be fun when you're figuring out how to play the game, but the AI is really bad (like in most strategy games), so you'll probably get bored of it fairly quick.

Yup, AY had the following super early AIs: Lanka, Yomi, Berytos. Also Mictlan, but he had legit reasons.
Der Gotter had Kailasa, Lanka, Niefel, and T'ien Chi.

So yeah, about 2-4 shitters will AI every Der Gotter name for no reason and with no warning. It's business as usual, shitters gonna shit (I bet they lost their awake gods personally).
>>
once everyone goes AI i will finally win my first pbem
>>

Usually you would be right, but admin fuckery is a very legit reason.
>>
Does Soul Vortex work on undead?
>>
>>153949730
Suppose the enemies are flying so Earthquake and Maws of Earth don't do anything, mistformed so blade wind doesn't do much of anything, mistformed so strength of giants don't do much of anything, your troops were supposed to have been mistformed so legions of steel doesn't do much of anything etc.

Conversely, consider the fact that he's essentially invulnerable to pretty much everything in the enemy army. Had it not been a rout and instead turned into battle of two mistformed armies wailing each other while mages are asleep and occasionally throwing a spell or two, he would have ended up surviving and killing a lot of stuff. He DID end up surviving against the whole enemy army (although probably would have been killed in the end if it wasn't for trample knocking him to the edge of the map).

I already had constructed Storm Spool to protect my pretender, Copper Plate was of useful gem type but justifiable for protecting the investment even if he was just a mage, fire and water gems have limited use, I had no nature access (amulet was received from trade) and winged shoes were a necessity for getting him into battle in time.

I rather think the Troll King would have been one of my possible trump cards had the battle not been so one-sided and turned to HP-based rout very quickly.
>>
>>153951352
Except that admin got replaced almost immediately so it's literally just hysterics for the sake of it at this point.
>>
>>153950760
I guess the logic is that if a weapon/attack can easily go through steel then it can also easily go through stone.
>>
http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=ToDistractYourselfFromLifeProblems

Game is up. Generic EA with summod, WH, 2 starting provinces and 15 HoF slots
>>
>>153952070
Oh, and map is subject to change.
>>
>>153952070
That's, uh, a pretty telling name. You okay, anon?
>>
Best items for mages's hand slots? I was thinking of just giving them Lucky Coins and Whips of Command.
>>
>>153952552
Boosters or just save the gems. Crystal Shield is pretty cool for not-astral mages that you want to boost up, if you can make it.
>>
>>153952702
The mages I want to equip are mounted.
>>
>>153953337
Sucks to be them, then.

But yeah, for most mages the only items worth giving to them are sometimes boosters, or armor if they're nudey dudeys and they need to walk into EQ or RoS
>>
>>153953623
EQ?
>>
>>153954190
Earthquake. And RoS is Rain of Stones.
>>
>>153954252
Kay then.

Are magic beings immune to Solar Brilliance?
>>
>>153954873
Not magic beings in particular. Why would you think they'd be?
>>
Charcoal Shield (fire shield) or Vine Shield for fighting Ermor?
>>
>>153938482

>Oh, I originally wrote this mod?
>couldn't even remember!

classic llamabeast
>>
>>153955116
Depends on the thug, but usually charcoal since it's very easy to make it immune to infinite skellies and relatively hard to actually kill those infinite skellies.
>>
>>153955045
Because I'm looking for Astral spells that would be useful for crowd control, and so far the only things that looks safe to use are Doom and Will of the Fates.
>>
>>153955116

How well is your other protection? Vine shield will trap skellies en masse, I believe it goes against MR, and they have fairly poor MR.

If you need your thug to kill as many of them and have good other protections I would go for charcoal.
>>
>>153955317
Antimagic is generally a good spell. Will and Doom are both fairly easily cast and very useful spells. The big one, though, is Master Enslave which is a game changer.
>>
>>153955506
S5, sadly. Plus I have no idea if that spell works on PD.
>>
>>153955701
Wait, what? PD is your problem?

Also, usually you cast it with a communion.

Well, seems this game has fucked up too like the rest (telling me the turn number is wrong). I presume the other admins just emailed Llama?
>>
>>153956421
It sounds like a double-turn. Definitely e-mail llama, but what will probably happen is that it will process again and then everyone will stale and then everyone can submit their new correct turn number. Do not roll back.
>>
>>153956518
>>153956421
Oh, and also - the fact that this has happened at least twice so far is a pretty bad sign and Llama may need to do some maintenance to figure out what's up.
I blame Red_Rob

Real quick - does Shatter work on all lifeless things or just constructs?

If it's just constructs, what tag do I use in the inspector to find what it works on?

People like Worthy Heroes and summod.

For SP practice, AI No Recruit is an easy choice.

I think that Magic Enhanced is kinda fun.
>>
Myth Age that comes before EA and has all the stuff mentioned in lore when?
>>
>>153962252

summod and worthy heroes are in almost every MP game. I was also a player who hadn't played since the first year of release. Summod is a very nice balance mod in my experience. Worthy heroes just adds some nice heroes to nations that had shit ones.
>>
Anybody know the details of how communions work when some or all of the mages involved have both master and slave on them? I've been trying to do some sp testing but I can't seem to figure it out.
>>
>>153964206
I think that being a communions slave subtracts 1 level from all of their skills and adds it to the master, so wouldn't make everyone a slave and a master accomplish nothing except wasting a lot of fatigue?
>>
>>153964534
I didn't know it subtracts from the slaves skill, I thought it just adds to the master's. Also no one with just slave on them seems able to cast but units with both slave AND master on them will sometimes cast but sometimes won't even if they have no fatigue so I'm not sure what's going on.
>>
How the hell are you supposed to sitesearch with LA R'lyeh? All you get is a S1, unless you want to buy some very expensive mages.

Haven't tried with summod but I assume it's the same.

>>153964874
Those expensive mages (just one or two to give you some basic gem income), voice of tiamat, summons, pretender. Also since the S1's are so plentiful you might as well send 4-5 around sitesearching, you might miss a few S2 sites but why not.
